AN OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE AUSTIN CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU 301 NORTH MAIN STREET, SUITE 101 • AUSTIN, MINNESOTA • 507-437-4563 • WWW.AUSTINMN.COM
WELCOME TO MOWER COUNTY, MN Welcome to Marvelous Mower County. With just under 40,000 residents, Mower County is a hidden gem that is on the grow. Austin is our county seat and is a diverse and welcoming community where over 50 languages spoken in its schools. Renowned photographer and Austin native William Taufic has captured our American dream story in his work, Our Austin Our America, which can be viewed at Austin City Hall. Mower County is a food production and research epicenter. Austin is the world headquarters for Hormel Foods, a global company with 20,000 employees and over 50 food brands including Justin’s P-nut Butter, Jenny O, Planters, Black Label Bacon, Applegate, and of course SPAM. Austin is home to the Hormel Institute, conducting world class research center with applications in medicine and agriculture. Nu-Tech Biosciences, produces bio-foods to serve the pharmaceutical industry with plans to expand its footprint in Austin. Riverland Community College, in partnership with the Hormel Foundation and the University of Minnesota, a leader in ag-innovation, is in the planning stages to build a 120-million-dollar agriculture research center. Farming is big business in Mower County. We have over 1000 farms and over 400,000 acres in production. Corn is the number one crop with soybeans a close second. Animal agriculture yields over 300,000 pigs, 350,000 turkeys and 30,000 cows annually. We are home to Four Daughters Vineyard and Winery producing award winning fine wines and ciders, even selected by the Sundance Institute to be its official provider for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Mower County is one of four counties in Minnesota without a natural lake, yet water plays a key role in recreation here. Lake Louise State Park, nestled in the southeast corner of the county, with its historic mill pond is an ideal place to canoe, fish, hike, bike and camp. The Cedar River offers miles of canoe and kayak fun and an opportunity to experience many birds and waterfowl in their natural habitat. The Chert Quarry archeological and cultural preserve near Grand Meadow tells the story of the ingenuity and creativity of indigenous people who inhabited this land 1000’s of years before European Immigrants arrived. Mower County has 341 wind turbines at last count and is the top wind energy producer in the state. We are doing our part to reduce Minnesota’s carbon footprint. Whether you are here for work or play, we hope you experience the magic of Mower County and make memories to last a lifetime. Minnesota Ranks 8th in Wind Energy Generation (2020): (top in order of production: Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois, California, & Colorado) Mower County’s average wind speed ranges from 7.5-8.5 meters per second Mower County has 341 wind turbines (2017) divided amongst 13 wind energy producing companies Mower County leads the state in wind energy production tax (2017) which offsets local property taxes. HISTORY CHERT QUARRY A prehistoric chert quarry used by Indigenous people for over 8,000 years is still visible in a small wooded area near the town of Grand Meadow. Nearly 100 pits, dug with handheld tools to reach the hard stone (“chert”) that was needed for making everyday tools, can be seen. Preserved by The Archaeological Conservancy since 1994, the site is being developed for self-guided walking tours for school groups and the public through a partnership between the Mower County Historical Society and the Prairie Island Indian Community. With signs in Dakota and English, visitors will learn about the quarry and the role of chert in the lives of Dakota-speaking people for over 8,000 years. The site will be open May through October beginning in 2024. A unique exhibit covering 12,000 years of Native American history in southeastern Minnesota is currently open daily at the Mower County Historical Society on the Fairgrounds in Austin. It includes the full story of the Chert Quarry along with artifacts made from Grand Meadow Chert that have been found in the region. Grand Army of the Republic Hall Post 130

CITY OF SARGEANT The City of Sargeant has approximately 65 residents, which includes the children but not the cats and dogs. Sargeant is named for a pioneer farmer Harry N. Sargeant, a native of Quebec, Canada, who settled in Mower County in 1865. Sargeant was founded in 1876. In March 1901, there was a vote by ballot to determine the separation of Sargeant Township and Sargeant Village. 86 in favor and 12 against. We have a Mayor and four councilmembers, city clerk and water/sewer maintenance man. For our businesses there is an automobile repair shop, welding shop, Nutrient Ag Service,
Sargeant Grain Co. We have one church in town: Zion United Methodist, two others close by: St. John’s Lutheran and Evanger Lutheran. We have a Community Center with a park, volleyball court and basketball court. The Community Center serves as the town hall and also
is available for rent for special occasions like birthdays, family reunions, graduation open houses etc. When Sargeant lost its post office we were able to keep our name and zip code. All our mail goes through the Hayfield post office. Children attend school at Hayfield Public Schools Hayfield, MN. We have four internet companies that have come into town. Our telephone numbers are a Dexter Exchange. So yes, when people see we go to Hayfield schools, our address is Sargeant but our phone number is Dexter, it sounds like we are mixed up, but in reality we are a very unique little city.
CITY OF TAOPI Taopi, Minnesota is located along Highway 56, designated as a Scenic Byway, near the source of the Wapsipinicon River. It is home to 58 residents. Taopi was platted in 1875 by the Taopi Farming Company. The unusual name of the city derives from the Dakota War of 1862, named after “Taopi,” an Indian chief that befriended the settlers after the New Ulm massacre. “Taopi” a chief of the Mdewakanton Da-
kota tribe saved the lives of 250 settlers and earned the gratitude of the people and a city namesake. Taopi is part of the four community joint powers tourist group called Prairie Visions. The group sponsors and helps maintain the Shooting Star Bike Trail that runs through Taopi. The old Taopi railroad area on the west edge of the city is one of the few remaining native prairie sites in Min-
nesota. The area is home to original tallgrass prairie and many wild flowers.
CITY OF WALTHAM Waltham, “Heart of the Farmland,” is a small town consisting of about 160 residents and is located right off of Highway 56. Waltham is a quiet town where everybody is your neighbor.
