FEATURED ARTIST TOM HORMEL

Born Thomas Dubois Hormel in 1930, Tom has lived in Minnesota, California, Hawaii, and Idaho, and currently calls Florida home. Tom’s parents were Jay Catherwood and Germaine Dubois Hormel, remembered fondly by many in Austin for their involvement in both Hormel Foods Corporation (then George A. Hormel & Co.) and the community. Tom was the middle child between brothers George Albert “Geordie” Hormel and James Catherwood Hormel. While he has dedicated much of his life to creating music and art, Tom is something of a Renaissance man; his interests are many and varied, and it is evident first and foremost in his diverse postsecondary education. He graduated from Occidental College with a BA in Sociology after spending two years at Palos Verdes College, and studied a year of Law at Loyola Law School as well as a year of Architecture at USC. He also speaks fluent French and Spanish. Tom cites Palos Verdes College as the place in which art first became an important factor in his life. His enrollment in drawing, painting, ceramics, and basic design classes sparked his lifelong journey as an artist. That is not to say Tom settled into a single passion after this initial inspiration; a recipient of the United Nations Environmental 500 award in Istanbul, he has been deeply involved in numerous conservation efforts throughout his life, participating in many environmental organizations and spearheading many projects. The viewer may well recognize these myriad influences in both the breadth and variety of Tom’s work. From his acrylic on canvas, to his digital art, to his needlepoint, each of the mediums Tom employs represents a chapter in his personal history. The collection of Tom’s work belies not just the artist’s passions for expression, but also a contagious expression of those many passions.

Featured Artist Exhibit at the Paramount Annex during the ArtWorks Festival (See Map Page 5) The AACA is proud to present a three-phase exhibit featuring artwork by Tom Hormel in his hometown of Austin, Minnesota. Over the course of the exhibit, 25 unique prints will appear in seven public spaces throughout the community. Fourteen pieces initially appeared in the Austin ArtWorks Center’s second floor gallery in April and May. A community-wide exhibit follow on May 15, comprised of eleven pieces across five locations. Admission to all locations is free with the exception of a $5 entrance fee at the Hormel Historic Home. Jay C. All five locations have special meaning to Tom Hormel’s family. The project will culminate in the union of all 25 pieces at the 6th Annual Austin ArtWorks Festival as the Featured Artist exhibit in the Paramount Annex (formerly Park and Rec). All prints are available for sale through the Austin ArtWorks Center and 100% of proceeds benefit the Austin Area Commission for the Arts. Please note that all prints must remain exhibited until August 28. AUSTIN ARTWORKS FESTIVAL 11

Austin ArtWorks Festival Purchase Award Sponsors Each year, a generous sponsor donates $5,000 to the Austin ArtWorks Festival Purchase Award. The sponsors then choose one piece of work as the winner of the Purchase Award. The funds allow the Austin Area Commission for the Arts to purchase the awarded work which is then displayed at a community location. Currently Purchase Award winning art is on display at five community locations. Special thanks this year to Purchase Award sponsors Phillip and Gail Minerich. 2016 Purchase Award Winner Scot Schmidt

An ArtWorks Week Event:

ARTWORKS CENTER GALLERY OPENING Meet the Artists: Thursday, August 24 • 5-7pm SHELLEY AQUINO BRANDON

MATTHEW RUCKER

I am mainly a pastel studio painter, inspired by what my camera catches as I observe the world. I draw inspiration from many genres of painting periods, the strongest being the current pastel masters. I strive for a recognizable view of my subject while incorporating why I chose to paint that painting in the first place. Mainly self-taught, my love of pastels goes back to when I was a young child watching street artists doing these marvelous celebrity portraits. Watercolors I had always been leery of until the freedom of yupo paper was discovered! What joy that plastic paper can bring to the colors I splash on it! I want to draw all the senses into a piece of work not just a visual image. I am always learning and applying new techniques to my work, I find I am evolving with each painting and only now have I begun to listen and go with the painting more and getting much more out of the process.

Painting is a way for me to go to a place that existed only in my dreams when I was young. This place was quiet, clean and simple. Most importantly to me, in spite of my colorblindness, I could see everything in bright and vivid color. My paintings are snapshots of this place. I use pure and saturated colors in my paintings for a very simple reason, I’m colorblind. I can’t see or match color the way most people can. I therefore have to mix a palette in a way that differs greatly from the average artist, and (when I don’t have help) paint without knowing how accurate my colors are. This isn’t necessarily a handicap. In fact, I think it adds a lot of versatility, originality and a unique cleanness to my paintings.

MEET THE SATURDAY, AUGUST 26 SAMMI JONES • 10:00 A.M.

JULIE SEEDORF • 1:00 P.M.

Sammi Jones got her start in roller derby in 2010 when she joined the Fargo Moorhead Derby Girls. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University Moorhead and has written for a variety of publications. She resides in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area where she works as an assistant editor for a trade magazine and skates for Minneapolis’s North Star Roller Girls.

As human beings, we are always a work in progress. From birth to death we live, hurt, laugh, cry, feel, and with all of those emotions we grow as people, as family members, and as friends. I am a dreamer and feel blessed to have the opportunity in my writing to pass those dreams on to others. I believe you are never too old to dream and to turn those dreams into a creative endeavor. I live in rural Minnesota and I am a wife, mother, and grandmother. I have worn many hats throughout my lifetime such as working as a waitress, nursing home activities, office manager and finally computer repair person eventually owning my own computer repair business. I never forgot my love of writing and quit my computer business in 2012 after signing a contract with Cozy Cat Press for Granny Hooks A Crook, the first book in my Fuchsia, Minnesota Series. Adding four more books to the Fuchsia Series, adding a new Brilliant, Minnesota Series and writing a column for local newspapers feeds my writing creativity. I also dabble a bit in watercolor painting and hope to eventually add pictures to my children’s book series, Granny’s In Trouble. Oh, and did I tell you I like to be a little bit silly.

CHRIS NORBURY • 11:00 A.M. Chris Norbury is an author and freelance writer whose first novel, Castle Danger, was published in 2016. He has written articles on wilderness canoeing for the Boundary Waters Journal and is a Contributing Editor to the website Brokerage-Review.com. His freelance areas of interest include politics, current events, finance and investing, economics, golf, canoeing, camping, traveling, food, and wine. Norbury has been a volunteer Big Brother in his community since 2000 and donates a portion of his book profits to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Minnesota. Born and raised in the Twin Cities, he currently lives in Owatonna, MN with his wife and golf clubs. To learn more, please visit his website, chrisnorbury.com.

SANDRA WEINRIB STANFIELD • 12:00 P.M. Sandra Weinrib Stanfield is a licensed colon therapist and certified clinical hypnotherapist practicing in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. With a B.A. in English Literature from Queens College of the City University of New York, she worked with television writers on movies of the week, soap operas and mini-series prior to becoming a paralegal in Los Angeles, California. In the late 1980’s, after using holistic health methods to overcome a chronic illness, she changed careers. Many years ago, she had the good fortune to meet and become good friends with Thomas D. Hormel, grandson of Hormel Foods’ founder, George A. Hormel. Two years ago, Tom asked Sandy to edit and publish his grandfather’s autobiography, based in part on her unequivocal enthusiasm after reading the manuscript.

MARY MCCARTHY • 2:00 P.M. I grew up in the suburbs of Kansas City and graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Business Administration. I married Jim McCarthy who was enrolled in medical school. We moved to Rochester for him to do his three year residency, and we are still here 40 years later! We have three married children and six grandchildren. I am retired from retail sales at the Herberger’s Department store where I was known for seeking out the best deals! My hobbies include traveling (internationally) with Jim, seeing the grandchildren, exercising at the gym, studying my faith, and volunteering. I wrote a book, A Pilgrimage of Hope: A Story of Faith and Medicine, about my ordeal with brain cancer. For this book, I received the Seal of Approval from the Catholic Writer’s Guild.

AUTHORS SUNDAY, AUGUST 27 EILEEN EVANS • 11:30 A.M.

JUDI BERGEN • 12:30 P.M.

A historian who gives much credit to those who offered information in her research of the Austin story, Eileen Evans created the biography of Cy Thomson. Cy was the infamous “criminal” of the city’s history, which Eileen insists that the book will also show the deep caring and generous side of this man. With the wealth of information and insights, this book took its form first as a weekly article in the LeRoy Independent (Mower County Independent). The final chapter was even a surprise to Eileen.

Judi Bergen has a master’s degree in social work from the University of Wisconsin. She has worked as a therapist in inpatient and outpatient mental health settings for over forty years. For the ten years before she retired, Judi also worked with Hospice patients and their families. Writing has always been an important part of Judi’s life. Her short stories have been published in literary journals. Longing to Belong is her debut novel. She lives with her husband in Austin, Minnesota, where they have enjoyed raising their three children.

LOCAL AUTHORS PANEL • SUNDAY, 1:30 P.M. COMPOSED OF LYDIA EMMA NIEBUHR & RICKI WALTERS

RICKI WALTERS

LYDIA EMMA NIEBUHR

Ricki Walters is an Austin Minnesota based writer and editor, who has a passion for thrillers, science fiction/fantasy, and middle grade and young adult novels. She is the owner of and editor for RLW Editorial Services (www.rlweditorial. com), and is a member of the Professional Editors’ Network (PEN). She has written articles for Connections, College Crossings, and the Professional Editors’ Network Newsletter. Her short stories have been published by Learning through History and Aria Kalsan. Ricki is currently finishing a middle grade urban fantasy novel, The Enchanted, for which she will soon be seeking publication. The fairy world she created for this novel comes partly from her imaginings, partly from Irish mythology, and partly from the Springbrook Nature Center (in Coon Rapids, MN), the Three Rivers Park District, and the Minneapolis park systems, which she enjoys as often as she can with her children and grandchildren. Ricki has a Master of Arts degree in English/Creative Writing and a Bachelor of Science degree in Corrections with a minor in Psychology, and she has taught writing as an adjunct faculty member at Riverland Community College and Minnesota State University, Mankato.

I began writing more than twenty five years ago while actively engaged in a science based career. As Lydia Emma Niebuhr, I have been writing books for young readers, ages 9-12 years, that have action and mystery without violence. My books incorporate humor and elementary science principles, as well as, addressing family issues faced by this age group. My latest book, for readers of all ages, is a historical fiction based on the Dakota Conflict in Minnesota. I currently have eleven books available on Amazon as print books or e-books.
