Taking “Minnesota Nice” to the next level Austin/Mower County Recognized as one of the 2018 10 Nicest Places in America Austin/Mower County was recognized by Readers Digest as one of the nicest places in America and was featured on Good Morning America on the strength of two local programs, PayItForward and Austin’s Vision 2020 Community Pride and Spirit Committee. PayItForward is a collaborative effort that brings Austin/Mower County businesses and individuals together to brighten, enlighten, and rejuvenate the hope of families in need. The program began after the program founder and her family lost everything in a house fire only to be the recipients of tremendous generosity and caring from the surrounding community. With the help and love of her neighbors as well as complete strangers, her family was back on their feet, started a plumbing business, and filled with a desire to find a way to reciprocate and give back. “There are members of our community who have suffered and continue to suffer trials in their life that are beyond their own control. Reaching out to those people is a way to wrap them in a sense of community love and safety,” she says. Families or individuals are nominated
to be the recipient of a PayItForward project. Collaborating organizations and residents provide supplies, labor, meals, and lodging for the family for the duration of the project, with many extra special items added to create the perfect finishing touch. The projects have included bathroom and home renovations that accommodate special needs like wheel chairs and physical limitations, improve quality of life, and bring joy and hope to families who have experi-
enced trauma, loss, and severe tragedy. Smaller PayItForward projects over the years include plumbing repairs to the Austin Sober House, a grill for Teens Recovery House, water heater installation for a local veteran, scholastic donations for students at a local elementary

school, a deer stand donation for disabled veterans, Bible Camp registration for children and a bulldog puppy companion along with fencing, food and veterinary care to a MN Veteran. Volunteers with the Community Pride and Spirit Committee participate in “Good Graffiti” sessions around the city, inspires/ invites regular acts of random kindness, and hosts numerous community events, including annual street and Fall Fests, a series of free outdoor community films. Austin is hosting the Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener on October 11-12, 2019 The Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener was established in 2011. The event focuses on Minnesota’s hunting heritage, cultural traditions, and the economic impact of the sport, as well as the generation of associated travel and tourism publicity. The Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener is a cooperative promotion between the host community (Austin in 2019), the Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources, and Explore Minnesota. Hormel family from 1901 to 1927. The house was extensively remodeled and modernized by the Hormels in 1902, including the installation of stained glass windows, leaded glass beautifully accenting the decorative woodwork, and the front pillars, imported from Italy. Now restored to early 1900’s décor (including Tiffany light fixtures and Greek marble fireplace), the 14-room home is open for guided and self-guided tours. For those looking for a special venue for a meeting, reunion, reception or other event, the Hormel Historic Home manages a banquet facility with a full range of amenities. STATUES NORTHEAST AUSTIN Austin Public Library, 323 4th Ave NE:
Once Upon A Time – a charming depiction of a young girl reading to her brother. Commissioned in 1999 in memory of Walter Wienke, library patron and donor, by sculptor Dennis Smith. The statues are mounted on boulders from the local area and surrounded by wild grasses and flowers to recall the prairie surrounding Wienke’s home.
Austin Law Enforcement Center, 201 1st St NE (near the entrance):
The Protector – an emotion-filled representation of our law enforcement servants in action. Dedicated in May 2000, artist Roger Brodin.
Courthouse Square/Government Center, corner of Main St and 2nd Ave NE: George Washington – bronze statue dedicated to the children of Austin on September 1937 as a gift from Judge and Mrs. Henry Weber; by artist-sculptor John K. Daniel. Part of the inscription states, “Only Wisdom Can Bring About Universal Peace to All Mankind.”
Mower County Veterans Memorial – dedicated Nov 1992 to honor those who died in service from the Civil War to the present; by artists Jeff Anderson (local) and Tom Hunt. The Mower County Veterans Association added the eagle sculpture, also by Jeff Anderson, in 2011. Over 1600 pavers have been placed around the sculpture, with flags flying over the memorial to honor and represent all 6 branches of service, as well as a POW/MIA flag.

The Eagles Ten Commandments Monument – presented by the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Austin Aerie 703 to the City of Austin and Mower County on June 18, 1960, as part of a youth guidance program, one of ten such monuments in the state of Minnesota.
Justice Center, 1st St NE and 2nd Ave NE:
Hands of Humanity, Hands of Peace – commissioned by the Austin Zonta Club in celebration of their 50 plus years of service. Designed and crafted by Austin’s Jeff Anderson, Anderson Memorials. The dove was created and cast in collaboration with Jeff Barber, Hader, MN. The hands represent service and depict various ideals of the Zonta members – communication, education, forgiveness, compassion, world friendship, equality, and justice. The dove is the universal symbol of peace.
Bandshell Park, 8th Ave NE:
Come Sit With Us – dedicated in 2007 to the children of Austin. Crafted and donated by Anderson Memorials; Austin Area Zonta members paid for the granite base and engraving.
SPAM® Museum, 101 3rd Ave NE: Farmer and Pigs – by artist Mike Capser, a life-sized statue of a farmer driving his pigs to market. This 1000 pound sculpture was created for the SPAM® Museum in 2001, to represent “not only Hormel Foods Corp’s roots, but also an artist’s appreciation for the family farm” (Austin Post Bulletin, August 10, 2001).

Ray of Hope – designed by Steve Carpenter in Minneapolis, donated by Gary and Pat Ray. The colorful sculpture is a representation of the results of research into the prevention and treatment of cancer by natural compounds.
VFW Post 1216, 2nd St NE and 3rd Ave NE: Fallen Soldier – by artist Neil Brodin. Presented to the City of Austin as the culmination of a Boy Scout Eagle project by a 13 year-old, this somber memorial recognizes the sacrifices of our military members. Dedicated in November 2014.
SOUTHEAST AUSTIN LaFayette Park East, S Main St and 7th Pl SE:
Kids Playing – part of a project between Spruce Up Austin and the City of Austin as a result of the Lydia Lien bequest to Austin Park and Recreation for city beautification and art projects. The sculpture is by Anderson Memorials, which generously covered much of the construction and installation costs, and the landscaping is maintained by the Windom 4-H Club. Girl on a Swing – added to this area by the Park Board from Lydia Lien’s bequest of funds to be used to beautify park; plantings were donated in memory of Alice Snater by her family. The statue was designed by Anderson Memorials.
Ellis Middle School, 1700 4th Ave SE (inside):
The Burning Bush – created by artist John Rood in 1958 to honor the family who sold the school’s land to Austin Public Schools. The sculpture symbolizes education as the flame never extinguished. The statue was restored, relocated inside Ellis, and rededicated in 2012.

SOUTHWEST AUSTIN Mower County Historical Society, 1303 6th Ave SW:
M4 Sherman Tank – this 32-ton WWII veteran came from Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, IL in June/July 1958 through the efforts of Congressman Ed Thye, as a centennial monument to war veterans. The move was funded in part by a “tank club” for 25 cents for children and 50 cents for adults. Red Cedar Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution Memorial Stone – bronze tablet mounted on a boulder listing the 64 Mower County soldiers who lost their lives in WWI, originally erected in 1922. Moved to the Mower County Historical Society grounds and rededicated in October 2015, after having been located at Todd Park, Courthouse Square, near the Municipal Swimming Pool, and then near the flagpole at the pool. Vermont Granite Fountain – once an early landmark that stood at the head of Main Street in Austin to quench the thirst of horses, birds, and dogs. The fountain came to Austin as part of a bequest from a Vermont man who had these fountains erected in cities of a particular size; although not meeting the requirements at the time, the trustees made an exception for Austin and the fountain was erected in 1900. The VFW later had it moved to Horace Austin State Park, and now it is at the Mower County Historical Society.

Buffy the Cow – a 20 foot long, 15 foot tall fiberglass Guernsey cow which stood as a landmark over a family-owned business since 1965 before being moved to its current location in 2011. A “name the cow” contest in 1966 elicited over 5000 entries, from which Buffy was selected.
NORTHWEST AUSTIN Mayo Clinic Health System – Austin, 1000 1st Dr NW:
Me Too – by artist Natalie Krol, a touching sculpture reminding the viewer of the importance of family and togetherness.
Worlein Park, 1st Ave and 1st Dr NW:
Nature and Family – a delightful representation of a young family—dog included—enjoying a day out among nature. Laid out over several landscaped levels. Property and statues were donated to the city by the Worlein family, and it was dedicated officially on July 2, 1999. The artist is Michael Capser.
PIGS IN THE CITY The result of an Austin Area Chamber of Commerce contest held in 2000 raising funds for charity. About 40 cement pig statues from Steven’s Concrete Gallery were decorated and displayed around town.

AUSTIN ASSURANCE SCHOLARSHIP The Hormel Foundation, Austin Public Schools, Pacelli Catholic Schools, and Riverland Community College are pleased to offer the Hormel Foundation Austin Assurance Scholarship. The scholarship will cover tuition and some fees for two years for all qualifying Austin Public and Pacelli Catholic Schools graduates at any Riverland Community College campus. To qualify for the scholarship, students must live in the Austin Public School district, graduate from Austin Public or Pacelli Catholic Schools, complete a set number of volunteer hours, and meet a set of qualifying criteria. “It’s our intent to help take away cost as a barrier for students in our community to attend Riverland,” says Jeff Ettinger, chair of The Hormel Foundation. “This will really allow our students to further their education, which benefits us all.” The scholarship is the fruition of more than four years’ worth of work and is designed to make college accessible to a wide range of graduates in the Austin community. “By enhancing the opportunity to get a post-secondary education, we believe that we’re helping to instill the belief that we can better ourselves with an education,” says The Hormel Foundation secretary Steve Rizzi, “and that will only help our community to grow.” According to Dr. Adenuga Atewologun, Riverland Community College president, the scholarship “is really going to be a game changer for [the Austin] community and our students. Postsecondary education is a very big piece of a stable community.” The scholarship is funded through a generous grant by The Hormel Foundation, whose mission is to “provide charitable, scientific, and educational support for the benefit of the Austin, MN community.”

MILITARY SERVICE
Austin has a long history of military service, starting with those men who enrolled for service during the Civil War in 1861 only 5 years after the city’s incorporation. According to the Mower County Historical Society, “The first man from Mower County to volunteer for service in the Civil War was Allen Mollison, a blacksmith who walked 30 miles to Owatonna to enlist. . . Allen Mollison survived the war and returned home to Austin.” The Mower County Guards, Company K, 4th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry was formed in October 1851. Their first flag was sewn by Mrs. B. F. Lindsey and Mrs.
J. L. Clark of Austin who purchased some silk in St. Paul and sent it to the unit in November 1861; cost of the flag was $16.98. Austin’s National Guard unit was the first NG unit to volunteer for active service in the Spanish American War. As part of the 34th Infantry Division in WWII, the unit served more days of combat duty in the European theatre than any other American unit. Today, the Austin National Guard Armory is home to 224th Transportation Company, part of the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division. American Legion Post 91 was established in May 1919, in response to a call by Jay Hormel to form a post. Post 91 started sponsoring a Junior Legion Baseball team in 1923 and has continued without interruption to this day, making it the oldest post in the country to have continuously sponsored a Junior Legion Baseball team. American Legion SPAM® Post 570, Minnesota’s only all-woman post, was
established in 1946 by Jay Hormel. Austin’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1216 was established in 1924, and is named in honor of LT Olaf B. Damme, the first Austinite killed in WWI. Along with the Disabled Veterans Chapter Arnold Brandt #27, and Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Austin, these organizations provide outstanding services to our veterans and continue to contribute to the whole community The Mower County Veterans Memorial located at the southeast corner of North Main Street and 2nd Avenue NE, honoring the county veterans from all branches of service. Visit the Mower County Historical Society displays – a battle flag carried by the 4th Minnesota, Company K for 3 ½ years of the Civil War. The GAR Hall Post 130 in Grand Meadow features exhibits about the Civil War. The American Legion Post in LeRoy also maintains an Armed Forces Museum with an extensive collection of military memorabilia donated by local residents.

CLASSIC CAR CITY
Calling all Classic Cars Austin, Minnesota is known by many names: Tree City, USA and SPAMtownTM USA, home of the Austin ArtWorks Festival, Paint the Town Pink and more, but some would say that Austin could also be known as Classic Car City! Each May in honor of Armed Forces Day the Austin VFW 1216 hosts a car show that typically brings in on average 120 classic cars. These cars fill the VFW parking lot, side streets and surrounding areas. The event includes 50’s and 60’s music, door prizes, food and awards. Proceeds go to support local VFW programs. Date scheduled for 2019 is May 18. On the first Thursday in June, classic cars will line the streets of
downtown, as the SPAM® Museum hosts its annual car show featuring classic and unique vehicles. This year the event is on June 6 and will showcase cars from a variety of states. Attendees can experience the SPAM® Museum and enjoy some SPAM® Sliders; proceeds from this show go to SPAM® Post 570, which was established by Jay C. Hormel in 1946 and is the only all-women American Legion post in Minnesota. The Austin Eagles Aeries 703 holds an annual classic car show in their parking lot in conjunction with the city-wide FreedomFest celebrations of the 4th of July. This year it will be on June 29 and includes food, live music and an outdoor dance. Also in July the American Legion

hosts their bike and Classic Car Show, held at Austin’s Post 91 across from the fairgrounds. You can enjoy music, grilled brats and hamburgers, games, a silent auction along with looking at cars and motorcycles from all over. Mark your calendars for August 17: you won’t want to miss the annual River Rats Car Club Car Show. This show is family fun for all ages. Enjoy food, silent auctions, games music, prizes, trivia, Hot Wheel races, a magician, craft fair and swap meet. Typically over 200 cars from a variety of makes and models will be on display at Lafayette, Park. All proceeds go towards local veterans programs. Nutt covers neuroscience and mental health for The Washington Post. She won the Pulitzer Prize in feature writing in 2011 and previously worked at the Star-Ledger in Newark, NJ and Sports Illustrated. Austin, Minnesota became one of the first in the country to launch a community-wide effort both to reduce the disorder’s stigma and make local business aware of the special needs of autistic customers. It is also probably the only small town in American to employ a community autism resource specialist. The mission was “a grassroots effort to improve our community, “ said Mary Barinka, an employee of the nonprofit Hormel Historic Home, where she serves as an autism resource liaison for Austin. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by delayed language, repetitive behaviors, sensory sensitivities and difficulty with social skills. Although the symptoms of autism can overlap with other developmental disorders, it has distinctive characteristics, including narrow, intense interests and routine and occasional emotional meltdowns when those routines are disrupted. More than 3.5 million American have been diagnosed with this disorder, according to the Autism Society. Business owners must fill out an application and then, along with their employees, go through educational sessions. They learn about the difficulties people with autism experience, including their triggers- a sound or smell or an unfamiliar situation may cause a meltdown. They also learn how to interact by speaking slowly, in a clean voice and in short phrases.
Most important, they are shown the value of learning to be patient and flexible. The value of these autism-friendly efforts is incalculable, families say, because it not only makes the lives of those living with autism easier, it also allows them to have experiences that those without autism have routinely. Best of all, they are lessons in communication, one of the chief skill that many children with autism must work especially hard to develop. Autism-friendliness has also reached into the Austin schools, where a peer program pairs high schoolers with autism with similarly ages student volunteers. The program is so popular that there is a waiting list of student volunteers. Word of Austin’s unusual autism-friendly services has resulted in at least a half-dozen families moving to town. Barinka has received calls from Salt Lake City and Flagstaff, Ariz. inquiring about how to set up their own autism-friendly programs, furthering a trend of entrepreneurship and innovation by individuals in the autism community.
