WELCOME Welcome to the 7th Annual Austin ArtWorks Festival. We are thrilled to gather as a community to celebrate literary, performing and visual arts in the heart of downtown Austin. Whether you are a first-time attendee or have enjoyed this event for years, we want to take a moment to share some news. The Austin Area Commission for the Arts, the non profit that hosts the Austin ArtWorks Festival, has a new name: Austin Area Arts. Established in 1992, Austin Area Arts started with a focus on performing arts at the Historic Paramount Theatre. Since that time, we’ve grown to encompass the annual Austin ArtWorks Festival (added 2012) and the Austin ArtWorks Center (added 2014). Today, Austin Area Arts provides about 40 live performances and 50 movies each year at the Historic Paramount Theatre; fine art exhibits, jam sessions, over 50 art education classes for children and adults, studio space for artists, and a retail space where 100+ artists sell original artwork at the Austin ArtWorks Center; and the Austin ArtWorks Festival which you will learn about in the pages of this program. As you enjoy the 7th Annual Austin ArtWorks Festival, please know that we appreciate your support for the arts and we hope you engage with arts programming throughout the year. We know that the arts have power to improve lives and the community and we will continue to work every day to honor our 26-year history. Laura Helle, Austin Area Arts. Executive Director New name, same great arts. Austin Area Arts

ARTWORKS CENTER: GALLERY SHOW Sandra Haff

The Austin ArtWorks Center will feature a gallery show by Sandra Haff of Minneapolis during the Austin ArtWorks Festival. The opening reception is part of ArtWorks Week on Thursday, August 23 at 5-7 p.m. The exhibit will be shown until November 11, 2018. Haff is a mixed media sculptor who creates art by recycling found materials. “I am a late bloomer. Although I have always been involved with creative activities, it is not until I was into my late sixties that I began to concentrate on shaping my artist niche,” said Haff. Haff’s assemblages—generally depicting a human body—consist of fabric and some salvaged items such as old bed springs, rusty cans, zippers, bark or gnarled wood. Each design is determined by the shape and appearance of the recovered item. Haff was awarded Best in Category at Park Point Art Festival 2013, Featured Artist at Loring Park Art Festival 2012 and Best in Show at Under the Walnut Tree Art Festival 2014.

ARTWORKS CENTER: TRUNK SHOW During the Austin ArtWorks Festival, visitors can also meet three featured Trunk Show artists at the ArtWorks Center: Gary Blom of Byron, Sally Gerhart of Brownsdale, and Ann Madland of Lanesboro. Blom is a silversmith and creates jewelry with gem stones from around the world. Gerhart paints Austin landmarks—past and present—in watercolor. A three-time winner of the Freedom Fest purchase award, Gerhart has also been commissioned by Mayo Clinic Health System Austin. Madland is a jewelry artist who creates one-of-a-kind handforged earrings, rings and neckpieces from silver and gemstones. She has been sculpting metal for over 20 years.

STUDENT EXHIBIT Austin Area Arts works to support and develop emerging artists in our community, including students. To advance that goal, the Austin ArtWorks Festival launched a new feature in 2018—the Student Exhibit. The Student Exhibit is located in the Paramount Annex featuring the art of local K-12 students. Austin ArtWorks Festival committee volunteers visited school-based art shows at Austin High School, Banfield Elementary, Ellis Middle School, Holton Intermediate School, Neveln Elementary, New Dominion School at Gerard Academy, Pacelli Catholic Schools, Southgate Elementary and Sumner Elementary. Students at each show were awarded the ArtWorks Festival Award blue ribbon and were invited to exhibit work at the Austin ArtWorks Festival. 37 talented young artists were invited to show at the Student Exhibit. Sponsors Potach & Mitchell are providing a $200 prize pool for eight Student Exhibit awards which will be posted on August 25. Visit the Paramount Annex (formerly Austin Park and Rec office) to catch the Student Exhibit. A live music acoustic music stage will also be offered in the Paramount Annex. The experience changed his life, made him more or less unemployable, set him on a journey to create and play music and brings us to now: 13 recordings, 250 shows a year or more, 200,000 miles on a well-broken-in Kia, and a nasty fear of heights. Parr now lives in Duluth Minnesota. He is married and has two children.

THE TINDER BOX

The band takes its name from a Han Christian Andersen fairy tale about a poor soldier who finds a magical tinderbox that summons three magical dogs to do his bidding. Firmly planted South Dakota roots are reflected in their music: folkrock with rarely upbeat lyrics and a driving banjo with a kick bass underneath. Some compare the sound to Grammy-winning folk rockers Mumford and Sons. The Tinder Box has released two albums: These Winds and Who’s To Till This Land? SCHINDLER CELEBRATION: PUDDLES PITY PARTY Puddles Pity Party—emphasis on the party—takes the 5th annual Schindler Celebration concert to emotional heights and depths on Saturday, August 25 at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. Puddles Pity Party attracts fans with its unexpected juxtaposition of the visual—a silent, 6-foot-8-inch sad clown—and the audio—a singing voice one critic described as “ the most glorious … a rich, honeyed tent-filling croon.” Puddles ups the ante on juxtaposition with his song choices, often presenting leisurely-paced, operatic interpretations of modern classic pop songs like “House of the Rising Sun” by the Animals and “I Want You to Want Me” by Cheap Trick and inventing novel ‘smoosh-ups’ like ELO’s 1976 “Telephone Line” woven into Adele’s 2015 “Hello.” Music is only half of Puddles’ family-friendly show. His comic antics and original videos produce audience laughter and tears.

“There’s something about a giant sad singing clown that comforts us, let’s us know it’s ok to feel, to show our feelings. It’s a sad and beautiful world, and we’re all in it together, even when we’re totally alone,” says Puddles’ spokesman Mike Geier. Puddles Pity Party is presented in Austin with support from Mayo Clinic Health System Austin to celebrate the life of family physician Dr. Dick Schindler who practiced medicine for over 40 years in our community. With sponsorship support from Mayo Clinic Health System, tickets to the show were priced at $25 advance, $30 day-of-show. This is a reserved seating show.
