AUSTIN FOOTBALL

The Packers had a big senior class, but they struggled throughout the year as they finished 0-9 overall in 2015. Austin came close to beating Red Wing as it lost 56-50 and it lost 26-21 to Rochester Mayo, but all Austin's other games were decided by two scores or more. The Packers had their season end in a 35-6 loss to Rochester John Marshall in the Section 1AAAAA quarterfinals. Austin suffered plenty of tough injuries throughout the year. “These guys have been really great,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said after the season. “It’s too bad that things didn’t happen the way we wanted them to happen. They’re a great bunch of kids, I really enjoy coaching

those guys and their attitudes have really been outstanding all year. We’re going to miss those guys.” Austin senior linebacker Jon Gallagher racked up 85 tackles in just six games and junior Jany Gash had a breakout season with 492 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Austin junior quarterback Jakob Crouch ran or 622 yards and 11 TDs and threw for 1,524 yards, 10 TDs with 15 interceptions.

AUSTIN VOLLEYBALL

The Packer volleyball team finished 4-23 overall and it is still looking for its first Big Nine win since the 2011 season, but the squad did make some strides in 2015. AUSTIN DAILY HERALD H 2015-2016 SPORTS YEARBOOK


Austin’s season ended in a 25-18, 25-16, 25-12 loss at Winona in a Section 1AAA tournament opener. The Packers avoided a sweep in 15 of their 27 matches and two of their Big Nine matches went to five sets. Austin senior libero Kelsey Sederquest set a new AHS career record as she finished with 1,150 career digs and Austin senior hitter Ashley Hawkshead had 219 kills.

AUSTIN BOYS SOCCER

The Packers came close to their first Minnesota Class A State Boys Soccer Tournament appearance since 2009, but they lost 1-0 in overtime to Rochester Lourdes in the Section 1A title game. The Packers finished the season 10-6-4 overall behind the play of second team AllState midfielder senior Sean Baker, senior forward Ochan Ochogi and junior forward Matias Parada. “We’ve been here five of the last seven years and we’ve only won it once,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said after the match. “We need to see what we need to as individuals and as a team to get things going in the direction.”

AUSTIN GIRLS SOCCER

The Packers had their biggest win total in at least a decade as they went 9-8-1 overall, but their season came to an end in a 2-0 loss at St. Peter in a second round Section 1A tournament match. The Packers were led by seniors Chloe Summerfield and Steph Chandler. “Next year we’re going to come back even harder and hopefully we’ll continue to do a good job,” Austin head coach Enrique Camarena-Corzo said after the season.

AUSTIN CROSS COUNTRY

AUSTIN GIRLS TENNIS

The Austin girls tennis team finished its season 1-11 overall after it lost 7-0 to Owatonna in its Section 1A tournament opener. The Packers were led by Mariel Flaherty, Elizabeth Ettinger and Jennifer Bogle.

AUSTIN GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Packers didn’t have any state qualifiers in 2015. Austin was led by junior diver Maddie Mullenbach, senior Katelyn Hillson and junior Abby Gogolewski.

The Packers had two state qualifiers and senior Madison Overby finished her cross country career on a high note for Austin. Overby qualified for her sixth career Minnesota Class AA State Cross Country Meet and she finished 52nd with a time of 19:18.2 at state. Austin freshman Abby Lewis ran in her second state meet and finished 71st with a time of 19:32.8. “It’s a good career for Madison. Coming off the stress fracture like that showed what kind of character she had,” Austin head coach Tony Einertson said after the race. “It was a good race for both of them.”

AUSTIN BOYS BASKETBALL

The Packers had a strong season as they finished 22-6 overall, but it ended a little sooner than they would’ve liked on a 64-61 overtime loss to Northfield in the Section 1A semifinals. The Packers had beaten the Raiders twice in the regular season. Austin will have a lot of talent back next season as sophomores Both Gach, who averaged 10.5 points per game and Duoth Gach, who averaged 13.7 points per game, both made big strides in 2015-2016.

AUSTIN GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Packers finished 14-12 overall as their season came to an end in a 60-54 loss to Byron in the Section 1AAA quarterfinals. Austin was led by 1,000 point scorer Shayley Vesel, a senior forward who averaged 17.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game and junior center Ruth Koang, who averaged 11 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.

AUSTIN BOYS HOCKEY

The Packers had one of their better seasons in recent memory, but it still ended in the first round of the playoffs when Austin dropped its Section 1A tournament opener to La Crescent 4-2. The Packers finished with a record of 7-151 overall as it was led by sophomore goalie Noah Bawek and junior forwards Brayden Merritt and Isaac Arnold.

The Packers had their season end in a 2-1 loss to eventual Section 1A champ Northfield in the section semifinals. The Packers, who finished with a record of 15-12 overall, were led by senior forward Chloe Summerfield, who will play hockey at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and senior goalie Mara Overby.

Christopherson took ninth in the 200-yard freestyle and 10th in the 100-yard freestyle.

nesota Class AA State High Kick finals as Austin competed in its 14th straight state meet. Austin seniors Victoria Hepler and Kayla Jacobsen were each named to the Class AA High Kick All-Tournament Team.

AUSTIN GYMNASTICS

Austin junior Maddie Mullenbach won her first individual all-around Minnesota Class A Gymnastics Meet in 2016. Mullenbach posted a total score of 38.125 as she won the beam, she took third in the floor, fourth in the vault and fourth in

uneven bars. “Looking back at year’s past I don’t even remember how well I do,” Mullenbach said after she won the meet. “I just don’t pay attention to the past and I try to go with what I got. I wouldn’t be able to do anything I’ve done today without my teammates. I love them so much.” As a team, the Packers competed in their fifth straight Class A state meet and they finished in fourth place with a team score of 144.275. Senior Rachel Quandt had a strong perfor-

mance in her final state meet for Austin.

AUSTIN WRESTLING

The Packer wrestlers failed to send any wrestlers to the Class AAA state meet. Austin sophomore Phillip Zynda finished in third place at 160 pounds at the Section 1AAA meet.

AUSTIN BASEBALL

The Packers finished 8-12 overall as their season came to an end on an 8-3 loss to Albert Lea in a Section 1AAA elimination game. Austin had beaten AL three straight times, including a 6-4 playoff win to open the tournament, but it couldn’t get past the Tigers a fourth time. Austin was led by senior shortstop Nate Conner, who hit .501.

AUSTIN SOFTBALL

The Packers won just four games in the regular season, but they racked up three playoff wins as they were one of the last three teams remaining in the Section 1AAA Tournament. Austin lost 11-1 to Kasson-Mantorville in an elimination game after winning three straight elimination contests and the Packers finished with a record of 7-17 overall. Austin senior catcher Shayley Vesel hit .438 to lead the team.

Austin didn’t have any state qualifiers, but it did have a solid showing at the Big Nine meet, where senior Ethan Morey took first

place overall. Austin finished fourth overall in the Big Nine behind a group of seniors that included James Snee and Zach Neumann.

AUSTIN GIRLS GOLF

The Packers had a young roster and they failed to qualify any athletes for the state meet. Austin was led by sophomores Madison Hasley and Kristina Thorson.

AUSTIN TRACK AND FIELD

The Austin girls track and field team had its most individual state qualifiers (four) in at least 15 years and the Packer boys had their first individual athlete get on the podium at state since 2010. Austin junior Jany Gash took fourth in the triple jump for the boys team and the girls had plenty of success as well. Senior Madison Overby took ninth in the 3200-meter run at state, senior Rachel Quandt took ninth in the 100-meter hurdles at state, junior Odongonga Oballa took eighth in the 400-meter dash and sophomore

The Austin boys tennis team didn’t have any state qualifiers and its season came to an end in a 7-0 loss to Owatonna in the opening round of the Section 1AA tournament. The Packers had a young roster and they were led by singles players Santiago Echeverry and Jens Ourada.

Southland SOUTHLAND FOOTBALL

The Rebels finished 2-7 overall after their season came to an end on a 35-2 loss to Goodhue in their Section 1A Tournament opener. The Rebels were led by senior linebacker Jackson Koenigs, who had 129 tackles and five sacks.

SOUTHLAND VOLLEYBALL

The Southland volleyball team finished 7-16 overall after it lost to Faribault Bethlehem Academy in the Section 1A West quarterfinals. Senior Olivia Gray had 241 kills to lead Southland.

GMLOS CROSS COUNTRY

Southland junior Peter Torkelson ran in his first ever Class A state meet in 2015. Torkelson finished in 35th place at state with a time of 17:07.5.

Hayfield HAYFIELD FOOTBALL

The Vikings finished 2-7 overall after they lost 40-28 at Wabasha-Kellogg in a Section 1A quarterfinal game. Sophomore Peter Osman had 60 tackles in six games for the Vikings.

HAYFIELD VOLLEYBALL

The Vikings finished 18-11 overall after they lost 25-18, 25-10, 25-18 in the Section 1A West finals. It is the fourth straight year that FBA has ended Hayfield's volleyball season. Sophomore Maggie Streightiff led the Vikings with 207 kills and 456 set assists.

HAYFIELD BOYS BASKETBALL

The Vikings rebounded from a slow start to finish 17-10 overall and their season came to an end when they lost 82-47 to Saint Charles in a Section 1AA second round game. The Vikings had lost their first five games, but they used a late six-game winning streak to get back on track. Hayfield was led by senior Aaron Anderson, who averaged 14.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

The Vikings didn’t have any state qualifiers in 2016.

HAYFIELD BASEBALL

Hayfield went 13-11 overall and its season came to an end on a 7-1 loss to Lyle-Pacelli in a Subsection 1A West elimination game. The Vikings were led by junior hurler Adam Fjerstad.

The Superlarks extended their program winning streak to 36 games and they won their third straight Class nine man football title. GM beat Underwood 34-20 in the state title game to capture the championship. Senior Michael Stejskal threw for 1,332 yards and 20 TDs and he ran for 643 yards and 14 TDs. The Athletics finished 15-11 overall after they lost 25-12, 25-9, 25-13 to Faribault Bethlehem Academy in the Section 1A West semifinals. It was the first time the Athletics had played in the second round of the playoffs since 2005. LP senior Sarah Holtz finished with more than 1,100 career kills and senior setter Courtney Walter had more than 1,800 career set assists.

Pacelli freshman Kayla Christopherson not only earned All-State honors for the second straight year, she got on the podium at the Class A state meet for the first time in her cross country career. Christopherson finished in eighth place at the Minnesota Class A State Cross Country Meet with a time of 19:22.7.

The Lyle-Pacelli boys basketball team had its season end on a 50-37 loss to Goodhue in the Section 1A West semifinals. The Athletics were led by seniors Noah Jiskra, who averaged 17.8 points per game, Braden Kocer, who averaged 16.6 points per game, Jordan Cotter, who averaged 10.1 points per game, and Lee Bauer.

LP was held scoreless in the last eight minutes of the game as Goodhue closed things on a 17-0 run. LP was led by a pair of seniors in Sarah Holtz, who finished with over 2,000 career points and over 1,000 career rebounds, and Courtney Walter, who was a 1,000 point career scorer.

Bollingberg pitched three times in a week to put the Athletics in position to make a run. The Athletics, who finished the season 18-5 overall, also had leadership from seniors Lee Bauer, Jordan Cotter and Braden Kocer.

Blooming Prairie sophomore Alec Ille took a big step as he qualified for his first state meet. Ille finished 90th at the Minnesota Class A State Cross County Meet with a time of 17:40.

BLOOMING PRAIRIE BOYS BASKETBALL

The Awesome Blossoms went 10-17 overall and they had their season come to an end in the Section 1A West quarterfinals when they lost 52-45 to Southland. The Awesome Blossoms were led by senior Anthony Nelson, who averaged 18.3 points per game, and sophomores Marten Morem and Jake Ressler.

Naatz, who averaged eight points per game and junior Marissa Larson, who averaged 7.4 points per game.

BLOOMING PRAIRIE WRESTLING

The Awesome Blossoms didn’t have any state qualifiers in 2016. BP was led by Mitchell Oswald, Ethan Arett and Seth Peterson.

BLOOMING PRAIRIE BASEBALL

BP had its season end on a 3-2 loss to Faribault Bethlehem Academy in a Section 1A West quarterfinal game. BP finished 3-18 overall, but it did win three of its last five games of the regular season. BP was led by senior Riley Olson.

BLOOMING PRAIRIE SOFTBALL

The Awesome Blossoms finished 10-14 overall and their season came to an end in a 7-5 loss to Wabasha-Kellogg in a Section 1A semifinal game. BP leaned on the leadership of juniors Elly Strunk and Bria Baldwin and the squad also had some of its younger players step up as it picked up three wins in the postseason.
