THE TEAM

FROM THE PUBLISHER

PUBLISHER/CEO Louis M. Earle

IT MAY NOT FEEL LIKE IT, but it’s that

time of year again. Get out the sunscreen, straw hats, shorts and T-shirts and head for the lake. Summer is right around the corner. Though the weather has been a bit schizophrenic lately, one of the year’s proverbial favorites, our annual swimsuit issue, is nothing but hot. At a time when life seems more complicated than ever, the year’s newest swimwear styles are refreshingly retrospective, with vibrant colors and playful lines hearkening back to much simpler times. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Gatsby would have been right at home cruising the lake in the vintage Chris Craft boat whose one-of-a-kind look and spartan design is featured on pages 24-26. Special thanks to Jim Frechette of Fleetwood Boats for letting us take a cruise on Moxie. In this issue, you can almost feel the warm breeze rustling through the palms as you lounge by the pool, a mood we only could have recreated with the generous collaboration of Cord Shiflet and Moreland Properties. And to fully capture the rich patterns and colors of each swimsuit this year, we needed a uniquely textured backdrop, which we were fortunate to fi nd in the 360 Condominiums. Many, many thanks to Will Steakley and Urbanspace Realty for making this location a reality. So sit back, relax and enjoy our biggest and best swimsuit issue yet. We’ve pulled out all the stops — two great photographers, two gorgeous models and some of the best locations the city has to offer. It’s full of intoxicating images and some of the best suits of the season. Hopefully, it will not only get you in the mood for summer, but will help you fi nd just the right suit to go out and have fun on the lake.

Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy

W W

hen you hear the term massage, a lot of words may come to mind: “hands,” “healing” and maybe even “comfort.” All of these can apply, but what happens when a regular massage doesn’t do the trick? What Ruthie Hardee, if there were a form where Founder therapists didn’t just use their hands? Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy, which is relatively new to Austin, goes a step beyond traditional massage therapy. It incorporates an even more useful tool: the feet. Ashiatsu, an ancient form of foot massage, literally means “foot” (ashi) and “pressure” (atsu) in Japanese. The westernized version is quickly becoming a trend in the massage realm. This method takes the ancient form and replaces a floor mat with a padded massage table while a therapist is suspended from bars on the ceiling. After experiencing something as surprisingly effective as a foot in your back, you may not need to go back to traditional massage. The founder, Ruthie Hardee, created it with the goal of ultimate comfort and repair for the recipient as well as the therapist. She stumbled upon Ashiatsu one day while working on a movie set, when she was too spent to give her last client the pressure he needed. Unbeknownst to him, Hardee hung from the ceiling and gave the entire massage using her feet. Six years later, Hardee introduced the first barefoot Swedish massage using bars on the ceiling to mainstream America. Rhonda Kachilla, an Ashiastu instructor at Massage Harmony, is one of two licensed instructors in the state of Texas. Like Ruthie Hardee, her discovery of Ashiastu was purely coincidental. Kachilla was a deep tissue therapist, and she could only perform a few massages a day — going home with muscle spasms, over-extended wrists and needing ice to soothe her sore body parts. One night her husband could not massage her with enough pressure, so in a moment of desperation, she asked him to use his feet. Her muscles began to unwind and she felt relaxed. Like Hardee, she found a method more potent than her own, and it required using none of her aching parts.

Why are the feet more effective than the hands? This method provides more control for the therapist and longer strokes over the body. Using the pressure of the therapist’s feet creates soft tissue that surrounds the muscles and disc space around the spine. The foot makes it simple to work out knots created by years of tense muscles. “Because of the shape of the foot, it provides a much broader surface,” Kachilla says. “Deeper pressure can be applied without it being pokey like a thumb or elbow. It’s a more comfortable, relaxing, deep pressure instead of being painful.” Immediately she found training classes to become certified. This excited Kachilla because she could do something she had never done before. “I can go from the ankle to the shoulder in one movement, applying force that’s assisted by gravity,” she says. “Muscle fibers tend to relax more when you massage from origin to insertion, all the way to the end.” Ashiatsu Oriental Bar Therapy is ideal for athletes and chronic pain sufferers for these reasons. It’s difficult to tell the physical difference between a hand and a foot during the massage: the only difference is a more intense, yet soothing therapy. “I feel really blessed that I was given the opportunity to bring something different to the Austin alternative healing scene: healing that doesn’t hurt the therapist,” Kachilla says. “Now I can give a massage like a 300-pound Swedish woman.” Thanks to Ashiatsu, which she refers to as “Tai Chi for the body,” she now has fitter legs and has extended the life of her career indefi nitely. Kachilla can now give eight massages in a day at Massage Harmony, totally consequence-free. She’s no longer in pain, and neither are her clients. Their appreciative stories are rewards all on their own. “To have someone say, ‘Since I’ve been coming to see you, It’s been three months since I’ve had a cortisone injection,’ or ‘I just ran yesterday for the fi rst time in five years because my legs don’t hurt,’ — that’s just amazing to me,” she says. feet have a larger, flatter surface so there is a larger tool to work with weight of the therapist’s lower body applies longer, deeper, more sustained pressure to your muscles deeper pressure facilitates breaking up muscular knots that can’t be broken up by traditional massage it helps the therapist in the long run: there is less strain and damage to their body using the feet is more intense but less invasive standing on a client gives longer, more effective, lengthy strides: which takes a lot less effort for the therapist

he days are longer and the Texas sun is warmer. Yep, it’s that time of year when we try to leave the office early on a beautiful Friday afternoon. But if you’re only headed to the neighborhood park, you’re missing out on Austin’s greatest recreational playground — seven square miles of fresh water. Take advantage of the Colorado River’s gifts to the Hill Country and check out these aquatic activities on Lady Bird Lake, Lake Austin and Lake Travis.

Sailing

2

Using the wind as your guide, navigating a sailboat is an art you can practice on breezy Lake Travis. Sailing was once a means to explore foreign trading posts; today Austinites prefer to explore the area’s lakeside restaurants. The 64 miles of Lake Travis provides the perfect locale for sailors of all varieties and skill levels.

Windsurfing

Take sailing to the extreme! Windsurfing combines aspects of surfing (the board) and sailing (the sail). Although considered a minimalist version of a sailboat, the windsurfer offers experiences that are outside the scope of any other sailing craft. You can perform jumps, inverted loops and spinning maneuvers on Lake Travis with this standing-only surf boat.

two

TRY IT NOW: Austin Sail Works offers complete windsurfer packages for beginners, improvers and racers (austinsailworks.com). You can also find information about different events and other places to windsurf in Texas here. Looking for some fellow windsurfers? Consider joining the Austin Windsurf Club to meet similar enthusiasts of the sport (austinwindsurf.org).

3

Canoeing

These simple boats have been around for thousands of years and are still popular with the crowds at Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake. The word canoe, originating from the term kenu, means “dugout” which is an accurate description of this hollowed-out watercraft. Most canoes can hold a small family and are propelled by a single-bladed paddle. Leisure is strongly associated with this boat as it’s best used for an unhurried water cruise on Austin’s Lady Bird Lake.

TRY IT NOW: Visit Zilker Park Boat Rentals to rent a canoe for $40 a day and check out their Web site for a rental coupon (zilkerboats.com).

5

Scuba Diving

See Austin through a fisheye lens! Whether you’re preparing for certification or refreshing for a future coast trip, Lake Travis is the closest venue for scuba diving. Once underwater, you can further expand your diving to include underwater photography, architecture and botany.

four

TRY IT NOW: Don’t have a sailboat? Check out Texas Sailing (texassailing.com) or Sail Aweigh! (sailingaustintexas.com). Don’t know which side is starboard? Both rental places offer lessons and you can snag a teacher at SailTime Austin (sailtime-austin. com). Be prepared to shell out some dough though — sailing is not a cheap hobby.

Duck Tours

Originally used by the U.S. Army for military transport, the Austin Duck now totes leisure-seeking citizens. Since the vehicle is amphibious, its inhabitants can observe Austin from both land and lake. The tours roll through downtown and you’ll get a “Duck’s eye view” of the State Capitol, Governor’s Mansion, Bob Bullock Museum, Sixth Street and of course Lake Austin. TRY IT NOW: Austin Duck Adventures offer year-round tours starting at the Austin Visitor Information Center at 209 E. Sixth Street. Before you go be sure to check their Web site as tour times vary depending on the day of the week and season. The Duck’s “bill” will run you about $26, but they offer price breaks for children, students and seniors (austinducks.com or 512-4-SPLASH).

TRY IT NOW: Need lessons? Tom’s Dive & Swim offers classes, dive trips and scuba gear. They have courses to suit the beginner, the pro, the rescuer and even the artist. You can spend a couple days (May 16 to 17) in an underwater classroom and learn about underwater architecture (tomsscuba.com).

Paddle-boating

Maybe using your arms to maneuver a boat isn’t your thing or maybe you want to embrace the romantic image of drifting on Lady Bird Lake with your sweetie. Either way, paddle-boating is a relaxing way to enjoy the scenery of our beautiful city. The boat, always consisting of at least two seats, is powered by the pedaling of your feet. If you think kayaking is easy, maneuvering this boat is a piece of cake.

seven Swimming

Sometimes this is the only way to really beat the unrelenting Texas heat. Fortunately, Austin generously supplies us with an abundance of swimming holes and wading pools. One in particular has remained a favorite among residents.

Parasailing

Get a true bird’s eye view of Lake Travis without having to pay for a plane ticket. Between 500 and 1,000 feet of line connected to a motor boat elevates you — and a partner for those afraid of heights — above the water. The idea of freely flying might seem unsafe but you are tightly secured in with a harness by trained professionals.

TRY IT NOW: Consult the knowledgeable staff

TRY IT NOW: Held at a year-round 68 degrees, Barton Springs Pool in Zilker Park is sure to take the edge off the hottest afternoons. The pool is naturally fed by underground springs and just one of these can pump 27 million gallons of water a day. The entry fee is $3 for adults, $2 for juniors and $1 for children under 12. The pool tends to get crowded quickly on sunny weekends so going early is a good idea (ci.austin.tx.us/parks/bartonsprings.htm).

Jet Skiing

Think snowmobiling — but on the water and under the warm Texas sun. Navigating Lake Travis on a personal watercraft (often coined “PWC”) is especially enjoyable if you prefer to be in exclusive control of your acceleration and direction.

TRY IT NOW: You can find a Jet Ski that suits your need for speed or your desire for leisure at Beach Front Boat Rentals on Lake Travis at Highland Lakes Marina in Volente (beachfrontboats.com/waverunner).

Wakeboarding/Water Skiing

Looking for the adrenaline rush associated with extreme water sports? Imagine being towed behind a boat cruising at 20 mph and you’ll be sure to feel your heart race. Water skiing is one of the most popular watersports around and wakeboarding is just a combination of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing techniques. Stay patient if you’re a beginner — it takes a good deal of coordination and strength to get the hang of standing up on the board or skis.

Pontoon Boats

Enjoy the ambience of Lake Travis without getting wet or expending energy. Floating on a pontoon boat, essentially a giant raft, is one of the laziest ways to spend a day on the water. This is the safest boat to drift along on since it’s easy to operate, slow-moving and virtually unsinkable. And for those easily burned, most pontoon boats are equipped with sun-relieving canopies.

Cliff-jumping

Do friends refer to you as a “thrill-seeker?” Can you not understand why people fear heights? If you answered yes to both questions, cliff-jumping should quench your adventurous thirst. Just like it sounds, cliff-jumping is literally leaping off a rocky precipice into deep water. Again, that’s DEEP water. Always be sure to check current water levels before you jump!

TRY IT NOW: Pace Bend State Park, located on Lake Travis, boasts prime cliff-jumping as well as swimming and camping. The park is 30 miles west of Austin and the entry fee is $8 for the day (co.travis. tx.us/tnr/parks/pace_bend.asp).

Fishing

With its 6.9 square miles of water, Austin is an angler’s dream. Lake Austin is home to a large population of 8 to 10 pound largemouth bass as well as bluegill, sunfish and blue catfish. This tends to be a night activity during summer months due to the heavy recreational boating in the afternoons.

TRY IT NOW: All anglers are required by Texas law to have a fishing license. You can quickly pick one up online at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Web site (tpwd.state.tx.us/business/ licenses/online_sales/). Be sure to also check out Lake Austin’s water levels before you fish (tpwd.state.tx.us/ fishboat/fish/recreational/ lakes/austin/)!

Fitness KICK MO’S BUTT

The HITs Keep on Comin’

How It Works

In an endless search to find the best workouts in town, Monica BrantPeckham has agreed to be our “guinea pig” and take them on full force. Every month we’ll feature a new trainer and a different set of workouts for our readers, in the process trying to Kick Mo’s Butt! THIS MONTH’S TRAINER: Blake Holman of Peak Fitness

Question

Answer

What was the hardest exercise? The hardest part was the HIT segment. My legs were already tired from the exercises, then we were HIT with HIT! I’m a sprinter naturally and do at least one track workout a week, so I’m conditioned for this type of training. But usually I get to use my arms and legs — only using my legs was tough.

s t ’ o M But

What part of your body did it work the most? Well, everything from the core down.

Did you find the workout more mentally or physically challenging? Probably both — again, because the HIT segment was so challenging — going from one type of training to another. Was it fun? Absolutely, we laughed and cried. Seriously! What was your favorite part of the workout? The challenge of incorporating HIT and staying strong during it, not just going through the motions. Your least favorite part? The bicep combo with shoulder press. I can't stand training arms!

Did you get your butt kicked? Well, if you consider laying on the sofa later in the day, still in my workout clothes, and not greeting my hubby properly when he got home, then yes, I got my butt kicked.

Did you ever feel over-exerted? This session was tough for me physically because it was a HARD workout, but also because I was just winding down on a ‘bug’ that had me laid up for almost a week. I was still in great shape, although my lungs were shot.

How motivating was the trainer? Blake was right there with me throughout the whole thing. He never stopped motivating and encouraging. He likes to say, “You can do anything for 30 seconds!” Could you do the workout alone? Yes, I can take some of the exercises and put myself through the paces, but there isn’t any way to do what a good trainer does on your own. Would you do the workout again? Sure. Next time I want to feel 100 percent though. Any parting thoughts? Stay fit, love life and God bless you! PHOTOS BY BRIAN FITZSIMMONS
