This facility will serve young mothers between the ages of 16 and 20 years old, who are seeking a place of refuge from domestic violence. It holds six bedrooms for six mothers and their young children to stay. The facility will provide a safe and secure position from which these young women can begin a process of navigating their past and current struggles while also coping with the ongoing realities of life such as school, work, family, and the like. When a young woman makes the decision that it is time to leave their situation, this shelter provides a temporary point of safety and respite.

Each space is carefully designed with young children in mind. If their experience at the shelter is a positive one, the likelihood that their mother also had a positive experience is greatly increased. In the bedroom, a small window is placed at ground level for the children to be able to see down into the courtyard if they are playing on the floor.

BEDROOM RENDER

One of the most important goals of the project is to create a sense of empowerment for these mothers while they spend time here. Creating a sense of ownership and a feeling of duty is essential to the healing process. Each bedroom has a planter directly across the hall from the room, giving the mother and their children a sense of ownership as they are tasked with taking care of the plants contained in their planter.

The site is located within the historic 18th and Vine Jazz District of Kansas City. The area has recently started a revitalization process due to the crumbing infrastructure of the whole district. This project entails restoring the Historic Robert’s Building as well as building a new 13,000 sf grocery store addition. The Eblon Theater has since been destroyed; however, the front facade still remains and must be preserved. A grocery store is essential as this neighborhood is located in a food desert, with the nearest store located over 6 miles away. Other amenities must be included to benefit the community.

Glazing

This project was centered around construction documents that we had to produce for our designs. Each project had to be extremely detailed and believable, even to our studio professors, who were three practicing architects for BNIM Architecture. We did this in multiple ways including a construction assembly sequence—a few steps are shown above—as well as wall sections and details that proved our designs could be built.

The Blue Valley Yacht Club on Tuttle Creek Lake has been involved in all things sailing at the lake for over 50 years. The organization is now requesting a building that they can use for learning, socializing, and building new boats for the community that they have built. This new building is intended to be a beacon of all things sailing, while relating directly to the lake they all know and love. Two intersecting bars hold the two different program types of the building: boat construction and community gathering area. The large cantilever creates a secure outdoor space for the group to gather.

SITE PLAN

The building is placed near the water for ease of access and to maximize views

SOUTH ELEVATION 21

The service is split between the more private functions of the club and the social functions

The social bar is stacked on top of the private to create a building that serves opposite functions

ENTRY RENDER

The facades that face the water are opened to emphasize the views from the building

The cantilevered mass creates dual layers of function for the social aspect of the club

orvieto welcome center. LOCATION Piazza Cahen, 05018 Orvieto TR, Italy SIZE: 7,200 square feet YEAR: 4th Year Studio | Spring 2020 DURATION: 6 weeks SOFTWARE Revit, Rhino, Enscape, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop 27

This was a group project completed during my semester studying abroad in Orvieto, Italy. Piazza Cahen is historically rooted within Orvieto as a gateway to the city. Arrival and departure to Orvieto takes place in this piazza, which is highly dominated by vehicular traffic. The design creates a welcome center in the piazza as a place for visitors to find information and get introduced to the city. It also fixes the vehicular domination issue and creates a larger pedestrian hub that will help bring a more welcoming experience to Piazza Cahen. My focus in this group was designing the Welcome Center building.

28

Dilemma - There is a disconnect between the arrival sequence in town and the pedestrian’s orientation towards Corso Cavour

This project is my final thesis project for architecture school. We were given the prompt of designing a place considered to be a retreat for a community of people in the Tempe, Arizona. Aside from that, we were in charge of creating everything about the project—including typology, site location, program, and many other things. My project is a Multicultural Center on the Arizona State University campus that is centered around creating a retreat and safe space for all students on campus, as many feel that they do not belong as it exists now. This is the project as it stands in schematic design—it is still in progress.

Arizona State University has one of the country’s largest student populations, and it is continually growing. This large population is incredibly diverse and continues to become more diverse as the years go on. There is currently no building that focuses on the wellbeing and promotion of their minority students, which is a big problem for the university administration. As time has progressed, more and more universities nationwide have built multicultural centers to advance and better serve minorities. As one of the most diverse universities nationwide, ASU students, faculty, and staff have all begun to demand the construction of a multicultural center on their campus to recognize the minority students. ASU will have a substantial social dilemma the longer they go without building a multicultural center. This project aims to resolve this problem and design a center to go on the ASU campus. The center will benefit all students, focusing on improving the lives of students who are gender, racial, and sexual orientation minorities on campus. There is a problem with perceived safety for these students, and this center strives to become a safe retreat for all who need it. This multicultural center will go to show all current, past, and future students that Arizona State University cares about the success of all their students.

SELECTED SITE 401 E Orange Street, Tempe, AZ 85287 33°25’5.05”N, 111°56’1.29”W Area = 16,000 sq ft The goal of this site will be to connect to the Memorial Union, creating an extension of the public space along Orange Mall. The base site is 16,000 sf—touching the exterior staircase of Memorial Union and the west wall of Sun Devil Hall. The total area includes the 2nd floor terrace of the Memorial Union, opening up the possibility for further integration in design. Positives • Between the Memorial Union and Sun Devil Hall • Along the Orange Pedestrian Mall • Across from the new Student Pavilion • Near School of Social Transformation • Modern building context allows for more freedom in design • 2011 University Master Plan lists this area as a key location for future development6 Negatives • Large scale existing bicycle parking is located on the site • Pedestrian circulation route to Business Building runs through site—must be considered

The site has a main entrance on the northern facade along Orange Mall, but also along the southern facade as it leads to the business building. The site plan addresses both sides as important directions of the building with the introduction of natural vegetation and bioswales to enhance the experience and landscape of the site. The facade will be a double screen facade with a glass and metal panel system that will shade the glass but also leave room for highly designed panels that relate to the project.
