Located on the southeastern point of the site, The Gildengate House has a prominant location on the square, and in relation to the city. It is the first building that is seen when approaching the site from the city. And 1 of the 4 main buildings that populate the square.
The two facades facing directly North and South creates key points of consideration. The South side is exposed to high thermal gains, and direct sunlight. This can cause issues for certain types of artists, while benefiting others. The Northern facade benefits from consistant lighting for artists.
The main pedestrain street, and site access runs next to the building, but has no direct access to the Gildengate house. The car access road into the site runs directly through the building form, but car traffic into the site is minescule. It is a key point of potential site and circulation connection.
Gildengate has three main materials, Concrete Structure, Brick Facade, and Single Glazed Ribbon Windows. The Brick is a positive as it is common among the surrounding area. The Concrete structure is in good condition, however it suffers from thermal bridging issues.

An artist-run studio complex, based in Norwich, founded in 2010, OUTPOST studios has established itself as one of the largest studio providers for artistic activity in the East of England. OUTPOST studios are currently occupied by more than 80 artists.
Gildengate’s location, and elevation results in optimal views from the city center to the the building, and back the other way. As well as good views into Angllia square. The tenants benefit as a result of this, as does the building in terms of value.
Being located on the edge of Anglia Square and elevated, the building facades become prominant features on the Norwich skyline, and have the oppurtunity to be “billboards” for the building programme.
The open, raw, and exposed spaces within the interior are perfectly suited to inhabit makerly environments, and creative people. The comfort of a place that can be adapted to the needs of specific users is an invaluable benefit of the existing building.
DESIGN PROCESS
New vs. Old Accent Connection Solar Shading Flexibility
EXISITING BUILDING
DEMOLITION
ACCENT BUILDING
Existing building envelope and structure to largely remain intact to preserve the adaptive floor spaces available.
Removing the facade and internal elements of the first two floor on the east side of the building to ephasize the entrance underneath. The unused car entrance is removed to eliminate car traffic, and priortize foot traffic.
A new structure slides under and wraps up and around the Gildegate provides new space for program. Keeping obvious seperation between the New build and exisiting structure, and thereby emphasizing programtic difference.
PEDESTRIAN RAMP
SOLAR SHADING
ADJUSTABLE PARTITION WALLS
A ramp is implimented to create direct access up under and into Anglia Square from main pedestrian street. This creates an urban parkway in a other wise non use space next to the overpass.
Solar shading on the southern facade to combats large solar gains, and facilitate studio lighting needs, while providing the building with a new aesthetic facade element. Operable louvers allows users to adjust lighting as needed.
Adjustable - light weight partitions provided throughout the artists studios allows for studio spaces to be flexible in size, privacy, location, and accomodate individual user needs.
