It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to Sounds of the Cinema, our annual fundraising dinner which this year celebrates a number of significant milestones for the ACO - our 40th anniversary, Richard’s 25th year as Artistic Director and the 10th anniversary of our National Education Program.
ACO VIRTUAL has now been seen by over 45,000 people nationwide, principally in regional areas. Next year we are excited to be launching a new program in partnership with the Melbourne Children’s Hospital, which will see our ACO Inspire Quartet visiting and playing for kids in the hospital. The success of the Emerging Artists’ program can be well and truly demonstrated by the appointment of five alumni to the ranks of the ACO, and next year the regional touring and education activities of ACO Collective will be revitalised with the appointment of Artistic Director, Pekka Kuusisto.
Over the past ten years the Education Program has become one of the jewels in the ACO’s crown, and its expansion has been in no small part due to the openhearted generosity with which guests at these annual dinners have embraced the program’s vision.
There is so much more to be done. We hope that as we celebrate the longevity and impact of the National Education Program this year you will be inspired to give generously to help us continue this work and bring music into the lives of even more young people across Australia.
This vision is an ambitious one – to transform the lives of young Australians through music. As we take stock of our achievements over the program’s first decade we are encouraged by evidence that we are making strong progress towards this goal. Our hugely successful music education program for disadvantaged schools, founded in New South Wales with the Australian Children’s Music Foundation, has this year been expanded to three primary schools in Victoria. With the support of The Crown Foundation, and in partnership with Penrith Symphony Orchestra and the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, we are delivering new music education opportunities for string students in Greater Western Sydney.

CHRIS TAYLOR MASTER OF CEREMONIES AND AUCTIONEER
GUILLAUME BRAHIMI GUEST CHEF French-born Guillaume Brahimi is one of Australia’s most respected chefs. Since arriving in Sydney from Paris in the early 1990’s, he has run some of Sydney’s most acclaimed restaurants, including Guillaume at Bennelong from 2001 until 2013, winning almost every major culinary accolade.
Chris Taylor is best known as a member of The Chaser team, responsible for television programs such as The Hamster Wheel, The Chaser’s War on Everything and CNNNN on ABC TV. The Chaser’s production team recently opened a theatre in Redfern which rivals City Recital Hall, Angel Place in all aspects except for acoustics, comfort and cultural significance. On the upside, it is further away from The Ivy.
In August 2014, Guillaume and his acclaimed team opened their new restaurant, Guillaume, on Hargrave Street in Paddington.
Chris recently teamed up with the ACO to compose a thrilling new work titled Symphony for Kazoo and Slide Whistle. It will have its ACO premiere in 2028, at the earliest.
Guillaume is also renowned for his commitment to several charities, including The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and the Bestest Foundation for which he is a member of the Board. He also participated in the 2014 Sydney to Hobart aboard the Perpetual Loyal Foundation yacht, raising a significant amount for charity. Guillaume is the newest Australian member of Relais & Châteaux.

W H E R E YO U R M O N E Y G O E S Funds raised from tonight’s event will support the ACO’s visionary National Education Program, which celebrates its tenth birthday this year. Our aim is to create a “Ladder of Inspiration” for promising young players. The first rung is providing music education for disadvantaged primary school children; then we progress to secondary school students where we work to improve the standard of string playing in Australia. ACO Move provides music and movement workshops for young adults with disability. At the top is our Emerging Artists’ Program, through which we mentor the stars of the future. Our Education Program reaches students all over Australia and from all manner of backgrounds, providing the inspiration to continue a lifelong musical journey.
PRIMARY SCHOOL PROGRAMS Working with the Australian Children’s Music Foundation, we bring music into the lives of disadvantaged primary school children in both Sydney and Melbourne, through engaging, interactive workshops and concerts. We have also created a “global classroom” with the introduction of our Music & Art program, delivered via video conferencing into primary schools around Australia, where children learn to express their creativity through visual art, inspired by music. “Dear Sharon, Hi, I want to tell you that you have been a good teacher. You taught me about ACO Music and Art program. You taught me about the artwork, tempo, emotions, instruments, vibrations, dynamics, compositions and composers like Beethoven and the person that did the seasons Vivaldi. You taught me a lot and I will want every instrument in the world. I really love the part of imitations of animal and a car on the highway. Thank you, Love from Simon.” Music & Art participant.
“What a fantastic morning we had here. The Quartet truly are inspiring! They are indeed talented performers and educators!” Karina Pepper, Community Manager, Leaning Tree Community School.
“I think music is inspiring to humankind and I understand now that it has an impact on moods.” Penrith Primary School participant.

S ECO N DA RY SC H O O L P R O G R A M S Our ACO Academy, Penrith Strings and string workshops give secondary school students the unique opportunity to play alongside ACO musicians and learn what it is like to play in a professional orchestra. We form longlasting relationships with these young musicians at the most crucial stage of their musical development, offering inspirational and life changing access to Australia’s finest young musicians. “I asked him, “On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is ‘yeah, whatever’, and 10 is ‘I wish I could do this every day all day’, how would you rate today” He said “TEN! Although that might get tiring.” Penrith Strings participant
ACO M OV E Our music and movement workshops for young adults with disability provide creative and inclusive opportunities for participants to learn about teamwork, self-esteem and the sheer joy of music.
EMERGING ARTISTS’ PROGRAM Each year we mentor the country’s most promising young string players, providing coaching and exclusive opportunities to tour with and learn from ACO musicians as part of ACO Collective (formerly AC O2), our regional touring orchestra. Our Emerging Artists’ Program has seen five alumni win positions with the ACO. Young musicians who have participated in our string workshops and ACO Academy are now auditioning for the Emerging Artists’ Program: clearly demonstrating the “Ladder of Inspiration” in action.
