In the morning 2016 oil on canvas 100 x 102 cm

i once took Jun Chen to my old school to do a demonstration painting class with some of the senior school art students. We found an excellent floor to ceiling window in the art department overlooking Hordern Oval, rose Bay. in the background and for tuitously was a jacaranda overhanging the hill leading down to the rugby field. Jun arrived with a blank canvas and began to hastily mark up a sketch with charcoal. Within five minutes he was applying the first fields of colour in thin sweeps of a palette knife. a short while later, the composition began to come into focus for the boys as the energetic artist moved back and forth from the work, his head swiveling frenetically from the easel to the window and back. the branches of the tree became apparent, a passionate swirl of pink and purple lifted on the work; the foliage caught in a gust. an hour passes quickly as a group of young

men watch one of the most talented impasto painters from an academic and technical point of view, work up spontaneously a vista for the first time. Questions are hurled at the artist and the normally shy, soft spoken Jun Chen beams and excitedly discusses his style and technique with generosity and pride. a double period passes quickly. the trees and foreground are clear but a dramatic sky is only just forming. the bell rings and Miss Crawford informs the boys they may go to lunch. Very few move, as if wrapped in a thriller one asks, “Can’t we stay and see how it ends?”. evan Hughes Curator, December 2016
