Indie BOOK Awards
2016 WINNERs
Australian Independent Bookseller
Australian independent booksellers have announced The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood as the Indie Book Awards 2016 Book of the Year. The Indie Book Awards, now in its Eighth year, are chosen by the country’s independent booksellers who select their favourite Australian books published in the previous calendar year. The individual category winners, in Fiction, Non-Fiction, Debut Fiction, Children’s and Young Adult, were also announced. From these five category winners the independent booksellers selected the best of the best - the Indie Book Awards 2016 Book of the Year. Judges’ Comments: Charlotte Wood’s The Natural Way of Things is dark and disturbing! A gripping read where we see young women stolen away from their everyday lives for perceived sexual indiscretions. The writing builds the tension and our sense of fear for the women is palpable as we realise the depth of their predicament. This is a brave and timely work, gritty and visceral in its telling. The Natural Way of Things is an utterly compelling and potent story of sexism against women and a reflection upon contemporary misogyny. Full of pathos and horror, it is beautifully written and powerfully evoked, showing the assured voice of a writer able to weave a narrative which never wavers from its purpose, nor loses its footing.
CATEGORY WINNERs Category Winner NON-FICTION Reckoning: A Memoir by Magda Szubanski Judges’ Comments: In this generous memoir, Magda describes her journey of self-discovery from a suburban childhood, haunted by the stories of her father’s espionage activities in wartime Poland and by her secret awareness of her sexuality, to the complex dramas of adulthood and her need to find out the truth about herself and her family. Heartbreakingly honest, joyously poignant, intimate and revelatory.
Category Winner DEBUT FICTION Salt Creek by Lucy Treloar Judges’ Comments: Salt Creek is a story as broad, beautiful and harsh as the landscape in which it is set. Following the failure of several ventures the Finch family is forced to leave Adelaide for the isolation and hardship of a run on the Coorong. Hester Finch relates the everyday events with perfect clarity and heartfelt emotion. A brilliant blend of fact and fiction. Salt Creek is a classic.
Category Winner CHILDREN’S The Bad Guys: Episode 1 by Aaron Blabey
Category Winner YOUNG ADULT Cloudwish by Fiona Wood
Judges’ Comments: So much fun! This is a great bridging book for children who are looking for something a bit more challenging than a picture book but are not quite up to novellas yet. The illustrations are hilarious and really bring the trials and tribulations of “bad guys” trying to be heroes to life. Blabey’s sense of the ridiculous is finely tuned. He pushes just far enough to be hilarious, and never quite goes overboard.
Judges’ Comments: I loved the premise of this book are wishes real, can they ever come true? And, importantly, what do you do if they do come true? Vân Uoc is a great character, trying to juggle expectations from her parents and her own dreams. Wood is a great writer, and her characters are beautifully drawn, full of tragedies and heroism.
