The Australian Maritime College’s Bachelor of Applied Science (Nautical Science) degree will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to safely manage and operate any type of vessel in the merchant fleet. Our program integrates professional short courses and training at sea so that you will not only obtain a Bachelor’s degree, but also a Certificate of Competency issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). You will learn about navigation, vessel handling, cargo and passenger transport, vessel management, marine legislation and shipboard safety. Our program is also fully compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention, as amended in 2010).
Entry requirements Pre-Sea Deck School leavers An ATAR score of 60 (or equivalent) Additional prerequisites Satisfactory Achievement in the following subjects at Australian TQA3 level, or equivalent: • General Mathematics (MTG315115) • Physics, Chemistry, or Physical Sciences (Tasmania only) Mature age/non-school leavers An equivalent ranking and subject matter knowledge calculated by your previous qualifications and work experience. You will also be required to meet the pre-requisites listed above via the completion of foundation units, or by demonstrating equivalent qualification or knowledge. Domestic applicants who do not possess the prerequisites can undertake relevant foundation units through the University to meet the required standard.
Alternative Entry Pathways Watchkeeper Deck • Completion of AMSA approved Pre-Sea Deck training (or equivalent) including evidence of minimum of 6 months sea-time on vessels greater than or equal to 500GT on company letterhead AND evidence of completion of approved monitored on board training program. (Task and Guided Study workbooks) OR
Conversion Pathway • AMC’s 3 year J2U Advanced Diploma (Nautical Science) with Certificate of Competency (CoC) • Holders of a Master Class 1 Certificate of Competency . • Holders of a Chief Mate or Watchkeeper Deck Certificate of Competency Please Note: Must have studied up to STCW Management level prior to commencement of the conversion pathway.

Nautical Science Study Phases Our degree is focused on delivering real-life practical experience, with a built-in sea-time phase of your AMC seafaring qualification. Through our integrated 5 phase learning structure, you will have the opportunity to directly link academic learning with its practical application in the workplace.

Pre-sea Deck training at the AMC Newham Campus (Launceston) Students will undertake training and gain the required skills, knowledge and attributes to undertake shipboard navigational, watchkeeping and marine communication tasks as a trainee Deck Officer under the supervision of a Deck Officer.

At Sea Shipboard Management Experience The on-board study program has been structured in a way that enables the candidate to consolidate skills acquired during year two studies as well as preparing themselves for year three studies. This program should be completed as a cadet during the sea service phase between year two and year three studies.
