Chairman’s Report NONE OF US IS IMMUNE!

Gregory Ross

In the many addresses given at Rotary conferences and clubs, I often highlight the staggering statistics about mental illness and how its effects can reach all of us. None of us is immune, as I have found only too sadly in the last few months.

My musician son Simon recently had a baby boy with a 37 year old doctor in Amsterdam. When Toby was only three months old, his mother jumped from the roof of a building and ended her life. My family here in Australia flew to Amsterdam to support Simon and her heartbroken parents and siblings. Fast forward two months and my daughter Sophie, a constantly working professional stage actor, withdrew from her commitments with the Melbourne Theatre Company and flew to Amsterdam to become Toby’s mother. It’s an amazing sacrifice and I am very proud of her for making little Toby her priority. With the full support of the late doctor’s parents and siblings, and how special that family is, Simon and Sophie brought Toby to Melbourne in August where he will be raised and educated. They will take him back to Amsterdam for two to three months each year. Toby is a happy, healthy little boy as typically seen in this photo.

Tragically in Australia during the 1980s, parents found some 500 babies a year lifeless in their cots. Professor Terry Dwyer’s research into sudden infant death syndrome at the University of Hobart, recruiting 10,000 babies to the Rotary funded study, brought outstanding results. Within a decade the number of infant deaths reduced by approximately 80%. Terry is currently Professor of Epidemiology at Oxford University but his cot death research remains one of the most successful research outcomes in the world. How lucky were we to have that as our first ARH project. These days the far greater challenge facing our society centres around mental health. When looking at the numbers of Australians currently diagnosed with a mental illness, the statistics are overwhelming. For any adult not to be affected personally, either through their own situation or through exposure to family members and friends who are suffering, would be a rare stroke of fortune. I am extremely privileged as a long-time Rotarian to currently Chair a program that is doing so much good. ARH with its Lift the Lid on Mental Illness campaign is something in which all Rotarians should be proud and celebrate. It may be helpful for those reading this newsletter to be reminded of the way we operate financially. We are able to spend 100% of club donated funds to research; in fact we often give more. That is possible because those business Rotarians who drove ARH in its early days decided to create and build a corpus. From this the interest earned now covers the costs of running the organisation.

Toby

The Zone Institute/Australia New Zealand Rotary Conference 2018 was held in Hobart in September and this prompted me to reflect that our initial research took place in this beautiful southern Australian city. In an effort to tackle the trauma of cot death, and following the Rotary Club of Mornington’s proposal, Australian Rotary Health Research Fund was created. With Past RI President Royce Abbey in the Chair, the fund received national and RI support and became the first home grown national Rotary program.

We have an investment fund of $14 million currently. From this the seven staff, volunteer directors and research committee expenses plus other costs such as advertising and PR are covered by the interest earned. Having the corpus provides great stability, as seen by ARH surviving the recent global financial crisis so well. We invest our funds conservatively through Unica Wealth, a Hobart based financial investment enterprise, with whom we have developed a strong relationship. For those who may question this strategy, an alternative could be to spend everything now on research and then survive year to year Continued page 2

on donations received. If we did that, we of course could not contribute 100% of donated funds to research and it would place us in a fragile position financially. I think that what we are doing now financially is the most effective way of ensuring that we can continue to grow our research funding. The 2017/18 Rotary year saw greater support given to ARH by many clubs and the financial contributions reflected this. Thank you to those Rotarians who value and appreciate what we are doing in the area of mental illness prevention. Through your efforts, we will have a strong research platform this year. Our biggest challenge within Rotary is to enlist support from those clubs which don’t have Australian Rotary Health on their giving list. ARH has been funding research since 1981 and is our biggest and longest serving home-grown Australian Rotary program. From nearly 90% of clubs giving annual support to ARH in our early days, that

dropped to nearly half. It is building again but still one third of all Australian Rotary Clubs have not supported any of our research or scholarship programs over the past three years. To those Clubs which may be unaware of the excellence and importance of our research programs, please visit the ARH website and check out our Lift the Lid campaign and also our new initiative, Adopt a Scientist. Finally, in Hobart at our annual ARH Dinner, Immediate Past Rotary President and fellow Demons supporter Ian Riseley became a Patron of Australian Rotary Health. Welcome aboard, mate! Wishing you all good health.

Lift the Lid: Young Minds Matter Forum A recent mental health community forum in Western Australia has received pledges and donations of $42,500 for mental health research through Australian Rotary Health (ARH). The Lift the Lid on Mental Illness: Young Minds Matter forum was held on Wednesday July 25 at the University of Western Australia (UWA) Club, attracting 151 guests who came to join in the discussion on youth mental health. The Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Governor of Western Australia, was one of the special guests in attendance that evening and spoke passionately about the need to continue funding for research into Mental Health, given the high prevalence and costs of Mental Health to families and the community. He praised Rotary and Australian Rotary Health for the work that they had done and are still doing.

151 guests attended the mental health community forum.

Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from Professor David Lawrence, a Principal Research Fellow at UWA, and lead investigator of “Young Minds Matter” - the Australian Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health Wellbeing. Professor Lawrence’s survey found that as many as one in seven Australian school students have a mental Director PDG Jerry Pilcher with the Dr Mark Boyes, Dr Jeneva Ohan and health disorder, more Honourable Kim Beazley AC. ARH PhD Scholar Moves on to Harvard Just last year, Dr Maria Di Biase was finishing her PhD research at the University of Melbourne. She never would have guessed that her research interests in schizophrenia would soon lead to a position at one of the top-ranking medical schools in the world - Harvard Medical School. With an Ian Scott PhD Scholarship from Australian Rotary Health, Dr Di Biase was able to acquire skills in pioneering neuroimaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to look at the wiring of the brains of people with schizophrenia. When a Principal Investigator at Harvard Medical School, Professor Ofer Pasternak was looking for someone to lead white matter imaging projects for a large study mapping the onset of psychosis, Dr Di Biase’s PhD research and interests aligned perfectly. “I was very surprised and overjoyed when he asked me to take up this post,” Dr Di Biase said. Like many scientists before her, Dr Di Biase had a hunch that the symptoms of schizophrenia arise because of inefficient wiring of the brains connections. “My PhD involved testing this theory and in doing so, we revealed subtle alterations of brain connectivity in patients at the earliest stages of schizophrenia.” “These initially subtle disturbances appeared to worsen over the course of illness and were

pervasive in individuals with chronic or prolonged schizophrenia.” These findings now provide a basis for Dr Di Biase’s current work that aims to track schizophrenia progression and predict treatment outcomes. “We hope that we can transform diagnostic and treatment decisions for people with schizophrenia, who currently rely on behaviour and do not address the underlying neurobiology of symptoms.” At Harvard Medical School’s Psychiatry Neuroimaging Laboratory, Dr Di Biase has access to newly developed imaging techniques which are able to capture more detail in the brain’s white matter architecture. These refined approaches may be sensitive enough to detect the subtle changes occurring in individuals at risk of psychosis, who experience attenuated or subthreshold symptoms. “Discovering these very early indicators of pathology could lead to improved diagnosis and possibly new treatments that target specific pathologies.” Dr Di Biase has always been motivated to fulfil her passions, regardless of where they take her. She sees moving to Boston as an excellent opportunity to learn from worldclass scientists. “I find that sharing knowledge is a powerful means to solve problems and pave the way forward. As an example, a group of people could attempt one of those escape room

Dr Maria Di Biase

challenges, but I’ll bet they escape quicker by sharing what they know with each other.” “In the same way, sharing what we know about mental illness both from experience and research, could open avenues for better and faster solutions.” “Continued support from Australian Rotary Health makes it possible for scientists to research novel solutions for diagnosing and treatment mental illness – affecting more than 20 per cent of the adult population in their lifetime.” You can help to support more mental health research like Maria’s by hosting a Hat Day event in October to help Lift the Lid on Mental Illness. ARH Research Committee Member Professor Ron Rapee AM, explaining the importance of continuing mental health research.

In particular, we are hoping this campaign will encourage the wider public and businesses to show their support. DID YOU KNOW the annual cost of mental illness in Australia has been estimated at $20 billion, which includes the cost of lost productivity and labour force participation? Mental Illness is also the leading cause of sickness absence and longterm work incapacity. If you want to help, visit www.adoptascientist.com.au or contact the Australian Rotary Health office on (02) 8837 1900 or admin@arh.org.au.

ARH researchers Dr Nicole Reilly, Ilaria Pozzato, and Louise Mewton were also in attendance at the Sydney launch.

Special guest Julia Finn MP, State Member for Granville speaking at the launch.

Our First Adopt a Scientist Donation The Rotary Club of Brighton (VIC) held their Brighton Lunch recently to raise money and awareness for mental health. Guest speakers included Grant Hackett, Olivia Rogers, Wayne Schwass and Jeff Kennett, who shared their personal experiences with mental illness. The event raised $40,000 for Australian Rotary Health, to be used for research into Depression. This was the first official Adopt a Scientist donation.
