Australian Water & Wastewater Association
• Communication Members of AWWA receive a copy of the Association Journal " Water''. Because the Association is a federation of State Branches and Federal Council, Branch meetings provide the main forum for communication between ·members. The frequency of meetings varies between States. Each State Branch issues a monthly or quarterly newsletter. Branch meetings take the form of a short business session followed by one or two technical addresses on subjects of topical interest to the water and wastewater industry. The style of meeting varies but a number of Branches combine the occasion with a buffet meal or dinner. Branches also conduct half day or one day seminars either alone or jointly with a kindred professional association.
The Australian Water and Wastewater Association is a national association of individuals and organisations interested in the various aspects of the water and wastewater industry. The Association promotes and disseminates advances in technology as well as social interchange between members. Professionals and technicians working in the various discipline areas associated with the water and wastewater industry will find membership rewarding, in particular it provides a means of staying in touch and up to date. Technical meetings, seminars, site visits and trade displays are aimed at bringing to the members information which is useful in their workplaces as well as fostering professional and social relationships.
• Conferences The major conference of the Association is the Federal Convention held every two years. Organized by a State Branch on a rotational basis it usually attracts several hundred members. Some State Branches organize weekend Regional Conferences each year.
The Association is able to mobilize resources to consider policy issues or focus on issues which the membership considers important The Association develops and maintains contacts with associations of other countries and when appropriate arranges joint conferences with them.
• Summer Schools/Specialist Conferences The AWWA sponsors national Summer Schools which are held every two years. The Summer Schools concentrate on particular aspects of water or wastewater and provide an opportunity for members to acquire or update their specialist knowledge through lectures and workshops which include national and international speakers. National specialist conferences are less regular and address specific topics.
Support for the Association through membership as a member, student, associate, or sustaining member will allow the Association to grow and expand its objectives as well as providing the membership with means of expressing educated views on important issues relating to water and wastewater industry.
Membership Categories
• Papers and Journals The Association publishes the technical papers presented at conventions, summer schools and specialist conferences. The Journal also publishes topical information on the water industry in Australia and on Association members. A calendar of conferences in Australia and overseas is also provided.
There are five grades of membership:
Member Members are persons possessing qualifications of a recognised professional standard and actively interested in the objectives of the Association. Associate Associates are persons actively interested in the objectives of the Association but ineligible for admission as a Member.
• Official Statements and Information Through Federal Council the AWWA at times provides information to government instrumentalities. Information such as lists of current water and wastewater oriented research has been prepared while information on watyr resources in Australia has been submitted to the Federal Government It is the policy of AWWA whenever possible to provide accurate factual information to facilitate decision making.
Student Student Members are students under twenty five years of age undertaking a course of study which upon completion would entitle them to Membership. Sustaining Sustaining Members are Companies, Departments or other Organisations directly interested in the objectives of the Association.
• Training Operators AWWA has promoted the training of water and wastewater plant operators. Initiatives in this area have led to the establishment of Operator Training Centres in many States. A large number of water and wastewater plant operators are associate members of AWWA.
Annual contributions and subsciptions are naturally subject to change, but current details can be obtained from Federal or Branch Secretaries.
