Introduction Call it an obsession or just one of the industry’s particularities: enthusing over the films lining up on the horizon and pretending to know what’s in the stars for these soon-to-materialize pictures. A certain breathlessness is part of the game. It’s about drumming up high expectations and hoping that the new films taking shape will be as hot as they looked on paper. But then, we also know that once these films have seen the light of a screen and met the eyes of the critics, the game starts afresh – a new list of the most eagerly awaited titles will appear, holding new promises. This is just the way the film world spins, and Austria is no exception. So now, welcome to the next round of Austrian films in the making. The international festival year for us traditionally opens its doors with events in Sundance or Rotterdam and reaches its first peak with the Berlin Film Festival. At the time of writing this introduction the Berlinale premieres confirmed so far are: Katharina Mückstein’s powerful L’ANIMALE, which unleashes a complex coming-of-age drama; in THE WALDHEIM WALTZ, Ruth Beckermann settles a score with the former UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim – who was also a forgetful man, especially when it came to his inglorious role as a Nazi officer in WWII. Also surfacing in Berlin will be the coproduction STYX by Austrian director Wolfgang Fischer – what starts as a leisurely sailing adventure turns into a moral nightmare for its main character.
Looking on there will be some more, quite a few more in fact as you will see browsing this Coming Soon brochure that will surface at various festivals in 2018. Let me highlight a few: ANGELO for example – based on a true story, Markus Schleinzer’s period drama tells the story of Angelo Soliman, who was brought as a child from Africa to Europe at the beginning of the 18th century and became the Viennese court Moor. Or Andreas Horvath’s LILLIAN, about a woman who leaves what is considered a normal life to walk to the end of the world and vanishes. Or Sudabeh Mortezai’s JOY, about a young Nigerian who is looking for a better life – for herself and her little daughter. And then there are Sebastian Brauneis’ elliptical drama SORCERER, Justin P. Lange and Klemens Hufnagel’s scary THE DARK, Nikolaus Leytner’s THE TOBACCONIST based on the best-selling novel by Robert Seethaler and Christian Frosch’s shattering THE MURER CASE; among the documentaries watch out for Hubert Sauper’s Cuban essay EPICENTRO, Erwin Wagenhofer’s BUT BEAUTIFUL and Fritz Ofner’s WEAPON OF CHOICE about the iconic Glock guns. The 2018 Austrian Films Coming Soon catalogue is an extension of our Austrian Films Review 2017 yearbook of theatrically released films. Regardless of where you pick it up, I sincerely hope you put it to good use. Wishing you inspiring, surprising and challenging encounters. Martin Schweighofer Executive Director 3

Directed by Markus Schleinzer Angelo is the story of an African who is Europeanised by force. At the beginning of the 18th century, as a child, he is taken from his homeland and, after being sold, given the eponymous name through the sacrament of baptism. The film is a story of becoming human that is marked above all by roleplay and conformity. It is inspired by the few surviving records of the life of the Viennese court moor Angelo Soliman.

Completion expected fall 2018
Directed by Nikolaus Geyrhalter We walk all over it every day of our lives. We plow it, we dig it, and we drill it; we cover it up with concrete. We map it and we measure it; we draw our borders onto it; and we imagine that it belongs to us. We live by what it produces, and we bury our dead in it. We take its existence for granted; it seems invincible, indestructible. If we consider our planet to be an organism, its crust – just 40 kilometers thick – is its most delicate organ by far.

Mauthausen – Zwei Leben Mauthausen – Two Lives
Directed by Simon Wieland The documentary tells the dramatic story of two people who lived in Mauthausen during the Nazi regime: one inside, in the concentration camp; the other outside, in the town of Maut hausen. One was among the victims; the other, the perpetrators. Directed by Marko Doringer “You are to blame, if your work is no fun.” Our contemporary life is dominated by self determined innovative models of work. At the same time we are forced to participate in a rat race of an achievement oriented market economy. Modern working systems promise more room for maneuver, more personal liberties for all, at the same time forcing us to work anywhere at any time. Where exactly are we headed? Are we really looking at a brighter future? Or are we simply losing the plot? What are we doing this for? And for whom?

Waldheims Walzer The Waldheim Waltz
Completed
Directed by Ruth Beckermann A film about truth and lies or “alternative facts”. Ruth Beckermann documents the process of uncovering former UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim’s wartime past. It shows the swift succession of new allegations by the World Jewish Congress during his Austrian presidential campaign, the denial by the Austrian political class, the outbreak of anti-Semitism and patriotism, which finally led to his election. Created from international archive material and what Beckermann shot at the time, film analyses the collapse of the Austrian grand illusion: having been the first victim of the Nazis.

Directed by Fritz Ofner “They never fail.” The Glock pistol has been fetishised in films and the arts, and is a regular topseller in the international arms market. For the first time, the filmmaking duo Fritz Ofner and Eva Hausberger tell the story of the rise of the Glock: An Austrian design that became the most sought-after service and murder weapon worldwide. Tracing the web of power, money, violence and politics, the film portrays the dark sides of globalisation and not least an Austrian tale of willful ignorance.
