Perhaps one of the greatest attributes of a positive role model is their ability to inspire others.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

1. A ROLE MODEL SHOWS PASSION AND ABILITY TO INSPIRE Role models show passion for their work and have the capacity to infect others with their passion. E.g. a pupil speaking of several of his teachers, “They’re so dedicated to teaching, helping and empowering students. That is such a meaningful gesture. They are always trying to give back to the next generation. That really inspires me.” N.B. teachers don’t just exist within educational institutions.

2. A ROLE MODEL SHOWS A CLEAR SET OF VALUES

Role models live their values in the world. We admire people who act in ways that support their beliefs. It helps us to understand how our own values are part of who we are and how we might seek fulflling roles in our lives. For example, a role model might be a person who supports causes related to poverty and the environment. These role models help us to understand the underlying values that motivate people to become advocates for social change and innovation.

A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life depend on the labours of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving.

Albert Einstein, (1879 1955), the German-born physicist who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921.

3. A ROLE MODEL SHOWS COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

A role model is other-focused as opposed to selffocused. Role models are usually active in their communities, freely giving of their time and talents to beneft people. We admire people who serve on local boards, reach out to neighbours in need and who are active members of community organisations. NBA star LeBron James is working to combat social deprivation in the area he grew up, seeking ways to create better futures for at risk children. Check out the LeBron James Foundation.

Muhammad Ali (1942-2016), professional boxer, activist and philanthropist, was involved in social work for years after he reclaimed the championship and eventually retired. In 2005, ‘The Greatest’ earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his continued sense of social responsibility.

4. A ROLE MODEL SHOWS SELFLESSNESS AND ACCEPTANCE OF OTHERS

Related to the idea that role models show a commitment to their communities, we also admire people for their selfessness and acceptance of others who are different from them. E.g. we might say of someone: “He never saw social barriers. He saw people’s needs and acted on them, no matter what their background or circumstances. He was never afraid to get his hands dirty. His lifestyle was a type of service.” Mother Teresa (1910–1997) was a Roman Catholic nun who devoted her life to serving the poor and destitute around the world. She spent many years in Calcutta, India where she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation devoted to helping those in great need. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and became a symbol of charitable, selfess work.

If you judge people, you have no time to love them.

And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don't just give up.

5. A ROLE MODEL SHOWS ABILITY TO OVERCOME OBSTACLES It is often said that success is measured not so much by the position that we reach in life as by the obstacles which we overcome. You might notice that when you work through something difficult, you develop a stronger sense of initiative. It’s not surprising that we admire people who show us that success is possible against the odds. Stephen Hawking (1942 – 2018), was a theoretical physicist who made revolutionary contributions to our understanding of the nature of the universe. Hawking was diagnosed with ALS, just after his 21st birthday. Those who knew Hawking clearly appreciated his enormous zest for life, great humour, and tremendous determination.
