Autism Chatter. By Valeria Porfilio, Mother of Mateo (5) In 2004, my husband and I welcomed our beautiful, healthy and full of life son, Mateo. Month after month Mateo got cuter and smarter, reaching his mile-stones on time. When he was a year old we began to notice atypical behaviors such as hand flapping, loss of eye contact and speech. We made an appointment with a neurologist and we left with a PDD-NOS diagnosis. It took us a year to fully understand our son’s diagnosis. By the time we realized it, Mateo was completely in the autism spectrum. This last diagnosis woke up a wave of emotions in me, from anger to devastation... you name it! During the following years, I was embarrassed by my son’s atypical behavior in public. At that point, I started to look for answers to questions like: What happened? Why? Was it my fault? Why me? After intensive research we decided to try biomedical interventions and therapies. We literally tried everything you can think of, and we are still doing it. We tried different therapies and tons of supplements. Like many other parents of children with special needs, we started to search for that person that will give us an answer, a teacher, a doctor, maybe a therapist. As parents, we relied so much on them to help our children that we forget our role in the process. I realized this when I attended a seminar about the Son-Rise Program. The presentation opened my eyes to something I have not seen before; all of the sudden everything started to make sense. Mateo is such a happy boy, how come I could not share his happiness? Then, it hit me. We are the ones that are confused.
instead join him in his. I use his behaviors as a key to build a bridge between our worlds. If he is flapping, I flap with him. If he is rocking, I rock with him. If he is finger painting with his saliva, I do it too. It is actually fun. I do not just imitate what he does, I truly enjoy those moments, trying to understand what do they mean for him. When we find a connection, I get a nice smile, our sights cross, and I can see those beautiful innocent eyes just staring at me. At these moments I know that what I am doing is the right thing. I can see my son as he is. My son was completely non-verbal and after one month implementing the Son-Rise program he is looking at me, calls me “MAMA” and he can say balloon. He is such a happy boy, he always was, but know I can see it. I do not judge him anymore. I learned to trust, love and respect him as he is. We are both learning from each other. The difference with Son-Rise compare to other therapies is that it includes the parents. The Son-Rise program is not only helping my child but also my husband and I. My beliefs have change. Our children’s trust us more than anyone else in the world. Why we cannot trust them? Is better to look at our children and their difficulties as an opportunity to grow, learn and love rather than keep crying and asking why this is happening to us. We do not have to take something that is terrible and pretend It is beautiful. Instead we have to understand that there is nothing terrible to begin with. They do not have a problem, we have a problem understanding them!
If you want to learn more about the Son-Rise program, go to www.sonriseprogram.com. They have scholarships available, which is how I had the After the presentation I had the opportunity to opportunity to go to their training last June. go to the Son-Rise center for an intensive training. I was amazed at all the parents I met in similar and worst situations than mine. I felt understood, like I could finally talk to people that walked in my shoes already. I learned many things that I want to share with you. I learned to be happy with my son. I stopped judging Mateo’s autistic behaviors, labeling them as bad or sick. Now, I see his behavior as the best he can do for now. I stopped forcing him to be part of my world and

BioMedical Q&A By Ms. Mellen Dear Debbie, My son is undergoing a yeast treatment, can you explain what is a yeast die off? When you take a treatment for yeast, it is because you want to eliminate yeast from the body. As yeast cells are killed, they release a toxin. The toxins can cause several symptoms in the body which are also know as die off reactions. A strong die off reaction causes significant discomfort in some people. It is a sign of a successful treatment. It can last from a few days to a few weeks. It depends on how much yeast a person has and how long has it been there. Some of the symptoms I have noticed with my clients with a strong yeast die off is a heightened anger response. Tempers and tantrums may be easier to tolerate if we know the ‘why’ of the behavior, and if we do something to help eliminate the toxins that the yeast is releasing. There is also an increase in whole body pain. The muscles and joints will ache. Movement can sometimes help, so we notice that the children will wander and move around the room instead of sitting in one place. Skin break outs and rashes may appear on various areas of the body as the toxins are making their way out of the body. The rashes may or may not be itchy. Don’t worry; there are several techniques to help the body get rid of the toxins. Try giving an Epsom salt/baking soda bath to draw out the toxins. You can also try an over-the-counter treatment called activated charcoal. Always give the charcoal alone and at least an hour away from or before taking any other supplements or medications. The activated charcoal will absorb the toxins and some have reported a decrease in the die off symptoms within 15 – 20 minutes after taking it. Help the body to release the toxins by using the infra-red sauna to pull and sweat the toxins out. Lastly, don’t feed the yeast with sugar. Sometimes we feel worse before we feel better. As my grandmother would say, “Sometimes we have to be cruel… to be kind”. Debbie Mellen Nurse Practitioner 7

By Aeleen Tortorici MS , LMHC Q: My son is not sitting or paying attention during circle time and the teacher keeps removing him from this activity. What can I do? A: During circle time a child is placed in an environment where all areas of learning are being tapped. The first thing you need to do is to determine where the child is struggling: sensory, auditory, visual, or a combination. Second, you need to establish strategies for integrating your child during circle time and redirect behaviors. To establish them, you should discuss it with your therapist and/or teacher. For example, one simple technique is to give the child a physical boundary like a cube chair (chair with arms rest) or an identified area.

Book Review. By Kesha Redd, mother of Brandon (4) Raising a Sensory Smart Child: The Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child with Sensory Integration Issues
Recipe of the Month. CASHEW MUFFINS This recipe is great to make snacks or school lunches for the children. The recipe is GFCF.
-By Biel & PeskeBiel and Peske share stories that relate to sensory integration dysfunction to help parents better understand sensory issues that affect their children. Sensory i n t e g r a t i o n Dysfunction, also known as sensory processing disorder, affects all kinds of children, from those with developmental delays, attention problems, or autism spectrum disorders, to those without any other issues. Some children struggle to process everyday sensations and exhibit unusual behavior such as avoiding or seeking out touch, movement, sounds, and lights. Self care skills such as getting dressed, brushing their teeth, and eating create challenges. Socializing in the community and dealing with loud noises, parties, and crowds may also be difficult. The authors provide suggestions for making these situations much easier to cope. This book is an excellent resource providing practical advice and strategies to parents of children with sensory integration disorders. The book is divided into four practical sections that will help you better understand your child’s sensory needs. The sections are as follows: Recognizing and understanding Your Child’s Sensory Issues, Addressing Your Child’s Sensory Needs, Fostering Your Child’s Development, and Parenting with Sensory Smarts.
