How to borrow items We have a number of resources available to loan within the organisation. Staff may use these resources to use in their work with service users and families. We do not directly loan to the public / service users (except for weighted therapy items). How to Borrow Items Resources are stored in the cupboard and cabinet in Interview Room 4. As this room is used by Aspire, it is recommended that staff wishing to borrow items do so between 9am and 10am weekdays. Staff can choose their item, and take it to reception to sign out. ALL items must be signed out. Any items unaccounted for will be treated as theft. Staff are requested to return items within one month. All items must be returned to reception staff and signed back in. Staff may be liable to replace items that are damaged or not returned.

DVDs Mozart and The Whale (feature film) A love story between two savants with Asperger’s syndrome whose conditions sabotage their budding relationship. A is for Autism (animation) This multi-award-winning film is a short glimpse into the world of autism, with words, drawings, music and animation all contributed by autistic people. Adam (feature film) Adam, a lonely man with Asperger’s Syndrome, develops a relationship with his upstairs neighbour. Snow Cake (feature film) A drama focused on the friendship between a high-functioning autistic woman and a man who is traumatized after a fatal car accident. Autism: The Musical (documentary) Follows five autistic children as they work together to create and perform a live musical production. Autism and Me (documentary) This award-winning short film by Rory Hoy, an 18-year-old filmmaker with autism, provides a privileged glimpse into his autistic world. We also have children’s DVDs such as Thomas the Tank and Peppa Pig. 5


Books Social Skills Games for Children Featuring a wealth of familiar and easy-to-learn games, this practical handbook is designed to foster successful social strategies for children aged 5-12, and will help adults to understand and reflect constructively on children’s social skills. My Social Stories Book A collection of social stories for teaching social and life skills to people on the autism spectrum. No Fighting, No Biting, No Screaming This practical book explains how to reassess difficult situations and offers easy and effective strategies for eliciting positive responses without resorting to restraint and punishment. Ready, Set, Potty Bursting with ideas on how to see past conventional strategies and adapt toilet training to suit your child, this book outlines methods that have helped even the most despairing of parents and caregivers. A Kit Bag for Positive Behaviour in the Classroom This book has been written by teachers for teachers, and is bursting with tried and tested strategies and techniques to make the classroom a happier place for everyone.

How to Help your Autistic Spectrum Child This practical guide aims to help parents with all those day-today problems that make life so tough for them and their ASD child. The Red Beast This vibrant fully illustrated children’s storybook is written for children aged 5+, and is an accessible, fun way to talk about anger, with useful tips about how to ‘tame the red beast’ and guidance for parents on how anger affects children with Asperger’s Syndrome. Let’s Sign An excellent board book featuring a young child and an adult signing a selection of first words such as as eat, drink, more and play. Listen, Look and Do Features over 120 activities to strengthen visual, auditory processing and memory skills. We Are What We Eat A great visual book with flaps to lift to show fruit and vegetables peeled and sliced. Ideal to make healthy food more appealing to young children and fussy eaters.

Interactive books with symbols Interactive Reading Books are fun, rewarding books designed to make it easy to teach people with special needs how to match pictures to words. Improves reading skills, speech development, fine motor coordination, and other skills. Build simple sentences by attaching the correct picture cards to the matching squares of each sentence page, then read each sentence aloud. • • • •

Communication & occupational therapy aids Toilet Time Cards A set of picture cards to help sequence the stages of toileting. These toilet training aids comprise 10 cards showing a girl and 10 cards showing a boy in the process of using the toilet. Good Behaviour at School Cards A game of association for learning about the right attitudes for getting along with school mates in the classroom. Good Behaviour at Home Cards Comprises 17 pairs of cards depicting behaviour types to identify the right and wrong ways to behave at home. Sequencing Cards This set of puzzles features photos of everyday activities in sequence order, helping people to understand cause and effect. Learning to Sequence Puzzles Different story sequences to learn 6 step sequences of a variety of activities such as making cookies, shopping, getting ready for school etc. Before and After Puzzles A set of puzzles for helping people to learn the process of cause, action and effect - for example the dirty shirt is put in the washing machine and then it is clean again Phonics Bean Bags A set of 26 colourful bean bags are a great tactile way to reinforce letters and sounds. Emotions Beanbags 20 squares showing pairs of matching expressions. Can be used to teach about facial expressions and emotions. ABC Eye Spy Bag This bag is a fun, tactile way to introduce children to the alphabet letters and beginning consonant sounds. Each letter of the alphabet is accompanied by a unique item beginning with that letter sound. Vocabulary Cards Develop key vocabulary with this set of double-sided colour photo cards. Card fronts feature a key word and familiar real-life photo; reverse sides offer an example of the word in a sentence. Monkey Weather Chart This soft fabric wall chart is an excellent resource for teaching weather and reinforcing days of the week, and teaching about weather-appropriate clothing. Feely Face Bear Puppets This set of Feely Face Bear Puppets each displays a different emotion: Perfect for discussing feelings and emotions, and developing imagination. Technology Laptops with Software We have 2 laptops featuring Boardmaker and Widgit software, ideal for making visual resources and supports. These can only be used at the Head Office site. Laptops are kept at reception and must be returned after use. Consoles We have an XBOX Kinect and a Wii, both with several games, available for use at special events and family days. Loan of these items must be agreed with reception staff in advance.

Weighted therapy items The deep pressure provided by weighted therapy have an overall calming effect on the body’s proprioceptive system. We have a number of items available for loan. Weighted items can be loaned for upto 1 month, enabling families to test their effectiveness before purchasing one for themselves. We require a fully refundable deposit of £50 for all weighted therapy items. To borrow weighted items, please call reception 0n 0121 450 7582 to arrange a visit. Weighted Blankets Weighted blankets are an effective way of helping sensory-seeking people unwind their bodies for sleep. Our blankets are suitable for the following body weights: • 3kg – body weight 3 – 4 stone • 3.5kg – body weight 4 – 5 stone • 4.5 kg – body weight 5 – 6 stone • 6kg – body weight 7 – 9 stone • 7kg – body weight 10 – 13 stone • 8kg – body weight 13 stone plus Weighted Jackets Weighted jackets are an effective way of helping to increase attention span and reduce hyperactivity. We have various sizes available: • Small Child – chest size 24” – 27” • Medium Child – chest size 27” – 30” • Large Child – chest size 30”-34” • Small Adult – chest size 34”-38” • Medium Adult – chest size 38” – 42” • Large Adult – chest size 42” – 46” We also have a number of ear defenders available for loan. Perfect for festivals, parties and other noisy environments. Ear defenders require a returnable £5 deposit.
