Student Support
Student Support
Aspire offers support to students who, like you, are on the autistic spectrum. Our student support is on a one to one basis and tailored to meet your individual needs. Support can take place either on campus or at our autism centre in Birmingham where we have comfortable and private meeting spaces available. Sessions are flexible depending on what you need support with but could include: •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• ••
Developing group work skills Developing communication skills Managing stress and anxiety Exam revision Presentation confidence Time management Prioritising workloads Accessing university resources Planning and starting assignments Maintaining motivation
Why choose us?
Our mentors are fully trained and highly experienced in supporting people with autism. Our mentors are educated to degree level and are experienced in the university system. We could provide further information about other Autism West Midlands services and events including support groups and workshops. You could receive your support session at our Autism centre which provides private and confidential meeting rooms as well as access to our autism library and sensory room.
Disabled Student Allowance
The cost of your support is covered by your Disabled Student Allowance (DSA). DSA provides financial help for individuals wanting to study a higher education course who have a disability, ongoing health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty. The amount you can get isn’t affected by your household income and does not have to be repaid. DSA is best organised prior to starting your course as applying later could delay your support. Information about how to apply can be found on www.direct.gov.uk in their education section, or you can contact your university for more information.

Contact Aspire at Autism West Midlands
We are happy to answer any questions you may have. To start your support we would first arrange to meet with you at a location you feel comfortable with. During this meeting we can discuss any concerns and areas of support which you feel you may need. If you are happy to proceed we would then complete a registration form. To register you we would need to have evidence of your Disabled Students Allowance agreement and, if you have one, it would also be useful to bring your student timetable if you have one so that we can plan and discuss delivering your support in the future.
