As dictated by the “New Normal”, on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), launched their All-New Honda City Hatchback on their facebook page. Just a few weeks prior, they announced the discontinuation of the Honda Jazz. Will this be a worthy replacement of the much loved Jazz?

The All-New City Hatchback’s active and energetic character is based on the “Energetic hatchback” concept and even if it shares the same premium comfort and quality with the City sedan, the hatchback aims to be sporty and cool, more suited for the active lifestyle.

EXTERIOR

Only the sole RS variant is offered at launch, you can expect similarities shared with the City RS sedan. Prominent up front is the RS Design Front Bumper and RS Design High Gloss Black front grille with RS Emblem and flanking this, are the full LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights, resembling a solid wing face. There’s the High Gloss Black treatment to the power folding mirrors. Tires are 185/55’s on 16” TwoTone Berlina Black Aluminum Alloy Wheels. Around the rear, there’s the RS Design Rear Bumper with a diffuser, and a tailgate spoiler in High Gloss Black. The City hatch shares the same 2600mm wheelbase as the City sedan, but it is 21mm taller and 204mm shorter due to the fact it is a hatchback.

Leather and Suede Seats

INTERIOR

With the Smart Entry Keyless Entry System and the One Push Start System, getting in and starting the City Hatchback is easy. You can also start the car from outside with the Remote Engine Start. You will notice it’s almost as spacious as the Sedan, and appointed with high quality materials. The Multiinformation Display with red illumination and sports pedals keep with the “sporty” character, but also adding to its premium feel are the combination suede and leather seats, black interior trim with red stitching and accents, leather wrapped shift knob and 3-spoke steering wheel with audio and hands free telephone controls.

There are comfort features like the front and rear center armrests, a new Air Conditioning System with Rotary Knobs, Digital Display and Illumination. There’s the 8” Advanced Touchscreen Display Audio system with 8-speakers and Apple CarPlay, Android Auto & WebLink connectivity

The All-New City Hatchback has Honda’s signature Ultra Seats (ULTR) which allows you to configure the interior to different passenger and cargo needs. Utility Mode – rear seats fold flat expanding the rear cargo area to be able to accommodate larger cargo, Long Mode – fully reclining the front passenger seat and folding flat the rear seat behind it allows you to fit long cargo items, Tall Mode – the rear seats fold upward, opening up more space on the floor and allowing taller items that need to remain upright to be transported, and Refresh Mode – moving both front seats fully forward, removing the headrests and tilting them all the way back level with the rear seats makes for a comfortable area for two occupants to relax comfortably.

The City Hatchback is powered by a 1.5-Liter 4 Cylinder DOHC i-VTEC gasoline engine which puts out 121ps at 6,600 rpm with 145 Nm of torque at 4,300 rpm, mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Paddle shifters are standard in the RS, plus, you’ll also get Honda’s Eco Assist System, which consists of the ECON mode and Eco-Coaching Ambient Light.

SAFETY

The All-New City Hatchback has Honda’s G-Force Control (G-CON) body structure protecting the cabin from impacts coming from any direction. It’s equipped with 6 airbags – dual front airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags and side curtain airbags. It’s also equipped with Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with Agile Handling Assist (AHA), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Hill Start Assist (HSA) and the Multi-view Rear Camera with dynamic guidelines. PRICING AND COLORS AVAILABLE

The All-New City Hatchback is priced at Php 1,115,000 and comes in four (4) colors: Ignite Red Metallic, Meteoroid Gray Metallic (New Color), Platinum White Pearl (Additional Php 20,000) and Brilliant Sporty Blue Metallic.

As expected, Honda’s pricing is on the higher end of the subcompact spectrum, but not too far from its competitors. You get quite a lot of car for what you’re paying for, and if longevity or lifespan of past Honda models are anything to go on, you can expect this hatchback to serve you for many years and may even end up handing this down to your younger siblings or children. And as with previous Honda’s, expect it to hold good value over time, it is after all a Honda and looks to be a worthy successor to the Jazz.
