LUXURY MPV

These days, there’s a Chinese brand with a model in pretty much all the categories of vehicle types sold here in the Philippines. Next to the SUV, the MPV is a popular category, seating about seven and offering a relatively comfortable ride, and available in modest to luxurious trim. China brand GAC recently launched their GN6, an elegant looking MPV, resembling more of a luxury mini-van than a mass people mover.

EXTERIOR

The GN6 has a similar physical profile to just about all MPV’s on the road. Up front, the Flying Dynamics design blends with the logo front and center and with this, the daytime running lights integrate themselves into the grille design. There are a good mix of just enough chrome and black. At the rear, there’s the LED taillights which when all are lit spans the width of the vehicle, and a 3rd brake light strip at the top of the spoiler above the rear hatch. The GN6 rolls on Maxxis 215/60’s mounted on 16” alloy wheels.

POWERTRAIN

The GN6 is powered by a Euro 5 compliant, turbocharged 1.5 Liter gasoline engine which puts out 170Hp at 5000rpm with 265Nm of torque at 4000rpm, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine and transmission is manufactured by Aisin and uses Bosch fuel injectors.

INTERIOR

The GN6 boasts of a spacious interior, providing a comfortable ride for seven adults. Luxurious leather seats welcome you as you enter the cabin without needing to remove the key fob from your pocket. Starting the engine is easy with the engine push start button.

The steering wheel is tilt-adjustable with controls for cruise control and the

6-speaker entertainment system, equipped with a 7” inch touchscreen. Both driver and front passenger have armrests which fold up and out of the way.

7-inch touchscreen infotainment system

The second row is a pair of comfortable captains chairs with armrests and 7.5 inch space between, for ease of ingress and egress of third row passengers. The third row seats three passengers. With the third row deployed, there’s 324 liters of luggage space, which increases to 1100 liters when the third row folds flat, out of the way, into the floor.

To complete the experience, GAC’s 360-degree Quiet Car technology helps cancel out ambient noise.

SAFETY AND CONVENIENCE

The GN6 is equipped with three point seatbelts with alert, dual front airbags, front side airbags, Bosch’s ESP 9.3 Electronic Stability Program, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control System (TCS), Hill-Ascend and Descend assist.

There’s a rear view camera, parking sensors, electronic parking brake that sets itself automatically when you shift into Park, ISOFIX child seat anchors, brake hold assist and anti-theft alarm with immobilizer.

IMPRESSIONS

The GN6 is a step above your typical MPV, with a more upscale feel which you not only see, but feel. The interior fit and finish is up to par with mainstream brands and their use of different materials, soft touch, brushed aluminum and piano black along with brown leather for seats and other interior accents set it apart. Connecting to the entertainment system is easy via Bluetooth, it did lack Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which would have been a plus, but not a deal breaker. The sunroof is a nice touch too!

For a large vehicle, it was relatively easy to drive, the electric power steering is light enough for easy maneuvering at slow speeds in tight spaces or parking but with enough heft not to be too light at higher speeds. The ride is comfortable but not too soft, and as expected, there’s some body roll when making tight turns but it’s well composed in both city and on the open road.

324 Liters Trunk Space

The turbocharged gas 1.5L engine has enough power to take you and your family or friends where you need to go, now if you feel you need more pep, a small button near the gear select lever allows you to select between drive modes, ECO, Normal, Sport (and Winter). These options adjust the engine response and gearshift parameters in concert with ESP and ABS. We didn’t see the need to switch out of ECO mode during our daily drives.

If you’re in the market for an MPV or even perhaps a mini-van, the GN6 has quite a lot to offer. At Php 1,350,000.00, it slots in at the price range of mid variants of mainstream brands, but with top of the line features. You’ll have to agree there’s some good value there, and wouldn’t look out of place next to its mainstream competitors. NEIL PAGULAYAN
