elcome to the opening round of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship at the fantastic FatCat Moto Parc venue in Doncaster. FatCat Moto Parc is a new venue to the Championship for 2012 and provides the ideal location to start the season. The deep sandy venue plays host to what is set to be one of the best British Championship seasons in recent years. With a number of top class World Championship riders competing in both the MX1 and MX2 classes, competition is sure to be fierce in the battle for championship honours. With no less than 15 major teams, representing all the main manufacturers, all will be looking for victories during the course of the season. Following the excitement of the 2011 season, this year is set to be even more exciting with a number of new

riders and teams entering the Championship. With the introduction of Buildbase Honda and Phoenix Tools Honda, along with Oakleaf Kawasaki competing in their first full season as a team. New riders to the championship included Grand Prix winners Nicolas Aubin in MX2 and Marc de Reuver and Kevin Strijbos both competing in the MX1 class. Current MX2 Champion Arnaud Tonus will be returning to action on-board his Monster Energy Bike It Yamaha machine and will be looking to start on top. Returning Zach Osborne, team mate to Tonus will be hoping to stop the dominance of the Swiss rider. French star Nicolas Aubin will make his debut in the British Championship today for the newly formed Buildbase Honda team run by Dave Thorpe. Aubin will also be facing tough competition from last season’s runner up Elliott Banks Browne on the HM Plant KTM UK. Other riders looking to kick start their seasons will be Ray Rowson, Bryan MacKenzie, Mel Pocock along

with Stuart Edmonds and many others. Meanwhile the MX1 class looks to be the strongest it has ever been, even without last year’s Champion Brad Anderson. This season sees the inclusion of a large number of former Grand Prix winners including new riders to the Championship Kevin Strijbos on the HM Plant KTM UK machine and Marc de Reuver on-board his Lanes Kawasaki, along with Shaun Simpson (Monster Energy Bike It Yamaha), Stephen Sword (Tyco by TAS Suzuki) and Gert Krestinov (Route 77 M-VRD Honda). The MX1 class also features a number of top level riders including GP riders Matiss Karro, Nathan Parker and Alfie Smith along with top British riders Maxxis Henderson LPE’s Martin Barr, PAR Honda’s Kristian Whatley and Oakleaf Kawasaki’s Alex Snow. Rounding off today’s event at Fatcats Moto Parc is the opening round of the three round ACU British Veteran’s Championship. In last year’s championship, champion Greg Hanson started the season off strongly winning

www.mxgb.co.uk

the opening round and maintained his lead to take the title at Hawkstone Park. This season Hanson will have a battle on his hands with Phil Mercer, who after joining the season after round one finished fourth and claimed the runner up spot in the World Championship. Other notable riders to watch out for in the Veteran’s class are Brian Wheeler and Phil Lewis along with many more. With a great event ahead of us today which opens the 2012 British Championship calendar, so that leaves me one final thing to do which is to wish you all a great day and hope you enjoy the action.

ooking around the paddock at any Maxxis British Championship event this year and you’ll see a number of teams making a big push for glory and no more so than the Maxxis Henderson LPE Kawasaki team in 2012. The 2012 season sees the Maxxis Henderson LPE Kawasaki squad of Martin Barr, Ray Rowson, and Connor Walkley going into battle. Unfortunately David Goosen is currently out injured and will be aiming to return to racing towards the end of the season. LPE Kawasaki are moving into their fourth season as the Official team for Kawasaki Motors UK, a position they took over after the departure of the Molson team at the end of the 2008 season. The Lincolnshire based outfit entered the British Championship scene late in the 2007 season before making a full seasoned

6 www.mxgb.co.uk

effort in 2008 with local rider Jamie Smith in the MX1 class. Following the 2008 season Kawasaki offered team owner Steve James the chance to take over the reigns as the Official Kawasaki team in the UK for 2009 onwards. With championship honours in the opening season with Kristian Whatley capturing the British MMX title and Rob Herring winning the Veteran Championship both on MX1 machines. The team also found success helping young Connor Walkley in 2010 to win both the BYMX and MXY2 Championships for Team Green. The progression since that first season in 2008 has seen the Maxxis Henderson LPE Kawasaki team improve and increase on its successes in both classes. The 2011 line up of Gert Krestinov in MX1 along with Bryan MacKenzie and Connor Walkley in MX2 brought the team’s best results in the Maxxis Championship to date,

finishing 4th in MX2 with MacKenzie and 5th in MX1 class. For a team to have a rider finish in the top five of each class is a major achievement in such a tough and demanding domestic Championship. Off the back of the 2011 successes, team owner Steve James has been working hard over the winter months to make the important changes needed to make the final step towards Championship glory. The changes come in the form of a new image, riders, mechanics and the key ingredient of technical and product support from Pro Circuit in America and Apico in the UK, but retain the close family atmosphere that the LPE Kawasaki team is renowned for in the paddock. Pro Circuit Kawasaki in America have been the most dominant team of the last 20 years in the Lites class winning countless titles both indoors and outdoors in the AMA. It’s for that reason alone that Steve James wanted to secure the support of Mitch Payton, during

a meeting at the Des Nations in France last season. When asked about how the deal with Pro Circuit materialised James said ‘At the Nations in France I was keen to meet with Mitch and discuss the idea and my views of winning the British Championship, Mitch asked me to leave the idea with him and he would come back to me. A month later we spoke on the phone and the deal was done. Pro Circuit are keen to gain more exposure in the UK market and hopefully we can help them do that by winning some races and be in the hunt for the championship.’ To back up the technical support from Pro Circuit, Steve James has taken on two highly qualified mechanics with a wealth of experience in the form of Paul Teasdale and Andy Pringle. Teasdale joined the LPE family late last summer to spin the spanners for Billy MacKenzie at the Maxxis at Duns and the British GP. Teasdale will spend the 2012 season working as Martin’s mechanic and brings years of top level experience working for CAS Honda and is also

a proven rider himself winning the British Under 21 title before a neck injury ended his racing career. Fellow ex CAS Honda mechanic Andy Pringle will look after Ray Rowson and all the teams’ suspension requirement, having worked for Josh Coppins, Ken de Dycker and Billy MacKenzie in the past. The team’s technical line up is finished off with Paul Whitehead as Connor’s mechanic as the youngster heads into his second season as a Pro rider. We also have Chris Muir, a Championship winning mechanic on board with us; Chris was going to be Goosen’s Mechanic but with David out injured Chris will now help out in the workshop and at selected races. Going into the 2012 Season the

whole of the Maxxis Henderson LPE Kawasaki team have strong hopes of challenging for the title in the MX1 class and breaking the domination of Honda. With Martin Barr at the helm of the all new 450f machine, the team has one of the championship favourites, looking to improve on his impressive season last year. While in the MX2 Championship Steve James has invested his faith in the talents of Ray Rowson and Connor Walkley. Rowson is a proven talent who has the ability to race with the best in the ultra competitive MX2 class and will be aiming for podiums on a regular basis. Connor will be aiming to stamp his mark on the Pro scene after a ‘up and down’ opening season and move towards the top 5. Being a hands’ on team manager Steve James is very aware of the importance of sponsors within the sport and spends the majority of a race day entertaining sponsors and guest’s. The Maxxis Henderson LPE Kawasaki team are very grateful of their major sponsors, Maxxis International, Henderson Insurance Brokers, Links Plant & Equipment Ltd, Kawasaki Motors UK, Truck Links, Apico Factory Racing, Pro Cicuit and Spiral GFX. But the whole effect would also not be possible without the valuable support of product sponsors such as Renthal UK, CI Sport, DID Chain, Motorex Oil, Vesrah, CGH Imports, Twin Air Filters, Polisport Plastic, Pro Carbon Racing Products, Talon, GMX, Venhill, Fro Systems, Raptor Titanium, Eibach, CM Engineering, Answer Clothing, Arai Helmets, Gaerne Boots, Rip n Roll Goggles. The team also receives valuable support from companies such as C & N Developments, Matt Gardner MX for DC Shoes, Uden Transport, Langver, Mansfield Anodisers Ltd, Serchem Hygiene Decontamination, and finally Fat Cat Moto Parc, Doncaster Moto Parc and Salter’s Lane MX Track for the use of their superb practice venues during the season, which allows the riders to stay in peak form.

WELCOME TO FATCAT MOTOPARC from Speed McQueen Events, for the opening round of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship

W

e at Fatcats are very proud to welcome riders and race fans from the UK, Europe and the good old US of A. It is a very exciting time here at the minute, having acquired the Motoparc nearly five years ago it was always an ambition of mine to hold such a prestigious event and already having seen a major National Event take place last year and the next step was the British Championship and to be given the first round of 2012 was the icing on the cake. The park itself has come a long way over the last couple of years since we moved to the new premises here in December 2010. Apart from raising the profile of

building tracks on the all-weather surface for both pro’s and clubman alike, putting the infrastructure like tarmac roads and car parking was instrumental to bringing the Maxxis event to town, hopefully continuing for years to come. KTM have also seen the ambition of everybody at Fatcat Motoparc and along with good friend Mark Jackson (Eurotek KTM) have formed a partnership with the legendary Austrian factory and have opened KTM race camps (1 of only 3 in Europe) which will cater for all abilities. Also joining us is former GP rider and multi British champion Paul Malin on the coaching side. So I will leave you to enjoy the great racing we have in-store for you today. ew year, new rider and new challenges, the 2012 season sees the STR KTM team move into the World Championship scene for their first full campaign of Grand Prix racing. The Lancashire based team heads into its fifth full season in the British Championship in the MX1 class, with new boy Matiss Karro and long standing team member Nez Parker. After joining the British Championship scene in 2008 in the MX1 class on-board Honda

machinery, before switching to KTM machinery last season. Team STR have progressed into being one of the main teams within the premier class. Nez Parker now enters his fifth season as a member of the team and is being joined by Latvian hot shot Matiss Karro. 2011 marked the team’s best ever season with Martin Barr finishing the season in third place and Nez Parker collecting seventh place overall. Parker’s results opened a number of peoples eye in the second half of the 2011 season after switching from the 350cc machine to the larger capacity 450cc which is more suited to his

taller physique and with it came a sharp improvement in results. After a successful 2011 campaign on the KTM machinery the STR team took the bold decision to move into the World Championship scene. For Steve Turner and his STR KTM Racing team, competing in the Grand Prix has always been an aim from the very beginning, “doing GPs is a natural progression, although from a monetary angle it’s probably not the best year to take on such a challenge, I said I was always going to do it”. However Steve has taken the time to develop his knowledge and the team’s infrastructure ready to take

on this next challenge. Steve maintains he didn’t want to take the step up before he felt they were ready for it, He understands that it isn’t easy going into any Championship from a standing start “you have got to learn how everything works. It’s not just a case of buying a few bikes, signing a couple of riders and rolling up in a truck. It’s important to work with the right partners in order to bring everything together and having the right personnel in the team is essential. One thing you do need is a good bike and we have worked hard to make both the 350 and the 450 into bikes which suit both our

UP riders styles and which they are confident with and enjoy to ride. I’m really confident that we have a great bike, which will be competitive at both GP’s and the Maxxis”. After deciding to move into GPs, the next aim was to find an experienced, top level rider to help make the transition easier. Within Matiss the STR team have a highly rated Grand Prix rider with over 4 years of experience racing in the MX2 class. The move up to MX1 will be a new challenge for the young Latvian who has quickly adjusted to the 350cc machine, which

proved its competitiveness last season in the hands of Martin Barr, taking numerous holeshot awards. His ability to adapt to new tracks and surroundings so quickly has impressed his new team manager, along with his unwavering positive attitude. Turner is hoping Matiss’s experience and knowledge of the Grand Prix scene will help influence his team mate Nez Parker. Parker has had to work hard to retain his spot on the team and Turner has confidence in his rider’s ability as he takes on a new challenge. Nez has brief experiences in Grand Prix racing but a heavy crash in Germany cut the opportunity short and had a knock on effect at the British GP some weeks later. Over the winter months the team have been working hard to ensure both the bikes and riders are ready for the season ahead including a trip to Spain. The trip allowed the team to fine tune the bikes further from the strong base settings from the end of 2011. The variety of testing carried out both on and off the track has shown little difference between Karro and Parker with both riders being in top physical and mental form. For the team’s first season in the World Championship, Steve is keen to see his two riders regularly inside the top 15 and pushing towards the top 10. Although with the depth of talent in the MX1 class, Turner understands that scoring points in such a quality field will be the first challenge to overcome. With two highly capable riders the team feels top 15’s and top 10’s are well within their grasp once they find their feet on the world scene. Finally the STR KTM team would like to thank the following sponsors, CM Vines, Steel Seal, RFX, Dunlop, Motorex, Spiral GFX, NME and Headley House Hotel. The team also relies on the valuable support from product sponsors Acerbis, Creative Designs, CZ, Delta, DEP, Donjoy, DT1, Dynobike, Fly Racing, Fro Systems, Gaerne, GSP, Physio Worx, Pro Clean, Pro-Carbon, Raptor, Renthal, Samco, Shoei, Smith Optics and Talon.
