As the AC system on certain hybrids and EVs operates above 48 volts, high-voltage training is essential, to avoid property damage and potential loss of life.

How to update your training

As AC and refrigerant-based thermal management systems are evolving fast, so too must technician training. LKQ Euro Car Parts says that not only can you obtain F-gas qualifications through its LKQ Academy but also its Level 2 and 3 awards in Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities provides delegates with the necessary skills to carry out routine AC servicing on high-voltage applications.

Denso highlights that its pan-European training covers everything from basic AC maintenance to fault-diagnosing compressors. You can participate through the company's distribution partners, view the information on YouTube, or via its official online e-Learning training platform, https://www.denso-technic.com/uk. In addition to receiving IMI-accredited training, Denso emphasises that technicians can compete in its 2023 League of True Mechanics competition.

Nissens is keen to point out that its training encompasses not just AC systems but also the relevant chemicals and service tools. It also offers three different levels (Basic, Specialist and Expert) of training classes that last between 3-5 days, depending on whether it focuses on theory, or practical handson activities. It also emphasises course flexibility, where training can be centred around specific issues that technicians have encountered within their workshops.

Why you should flush

If a compressor has failed in use, metal filings can infiltrate the refrigerant system. Evidence of this is straightforward, when removing the unit and viewing the contaminated lubricating oil. Most commonly, these contaminations will lie in wait, ready to damage the new compressor. This is why flushing is a wise precaution, not just to ensure a long-lived repair but also to protect yourself, as some compressor manufacturers will not accept warranty returns, unless you flushed the system before fitting the new part. Waeco recommends that a filter is installed on the suction line to capture these metal fragments. It adds that this is not flushing's sole advantage. It also helps to remove acids that have formed, from moisture entering the damaged circuit.
