Hwy H2O Conference 2008 Change Leadership

Date: November 4–5, 2008

Location: Toronto Airport Marriott

Module 1: Changing Markets

Module 3: The Status of Short Sea Shipping

The ever-changing global economy impacts commodity flows on the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System. Speakers will address recent changes and specific commodities important to the System. This module will examine market shifts and rising operating costs, along with how this impacts charter rates and freight flows regionally, nationally and globally.

A moderated panel will present and discuss recent events and developments in short sea shipping on the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System. While new SSS services have come on line over the past few years, the ‘water route’ still remains a rather underutilized resource. This module will consider issues from the perspective of the user – what does the customer want and what changes do they have to make to incorporate SSS into their supply chain? Speakers with direct short sea shipping experience will share their experiences and expertise.

Module 2: Attracting New Cargo to the System – Alberta’s Oil Sands Ports along the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System are well-positioned to take advantage of the breakbulk and project cargo markets. Windmill components, oil and gas equipment, and other machinery have registered an increase in recent years. The marine mode has the potential to play a larger role in the transportation of cargoes destined for the Alberta Oil Sands. Speakers will go into depth on over dimensional cargo headed towards Alberta’s Oil Sands, looking at how most of it is currently being moved and whether viable alternatives are profitable enough to attract new stakeholders. Experts will examine what it takes to attract vessels into the system.

Module 4: Creative Solutions in the Supply Chain Presenters will describe real solutions to overcoming logistical challenges. Creative solutions in the supply chain that have improved customer satisfaction, profitability, or environmental performance will be discussed, whether it be through clever use of technology or the willingness to change operational procedures.
