WHERE THE COUCH IS...
People have always sought sanctuary and comfort. Not many people would dispute that and in fact it’s a statement supported by the archaeological record. It’s who we are. Most things we humans do are designed around reducing some state of deprivation. Shopping for food, for example, is really about addressing the fact that we know, without doubt, that we will need to eat again soon. Similarly we know we need to sleep and do so in a way that allows us to relax. Something we take for granted. In this regard the home, one would hope, is a place we can take refuge from the demands of the world. The cave, for prehistoric people, would have provided shelter from the elements and protection from predators and likely been thought of in a similar way to what we think of as home.
The same is true for other shelters various groups of humans have constructed throughout history. Long-Houses, for example, favoured by indigenous west-coast peoples offered both protection from the elements while cultivating a sense of community and togetherness of the group. This is a great example of how people

At some point, probably after the plough was invented, people were able to enjoy leisure time in the home. This is the time, for example, where we might stretch out on a rocker-recliner and close our eyes and just enjoy the sheer pleasure of “lounging.” Whether your “pad” is a cave, a long house or a place for you to lounge on the sofa for a while, before you’re back to work, it’s your home and should be treasured, protected and appreciated.

Driving in Winter Conditions Winter is well upon us and will be for some time yet. Maintaining visibility and simply keeping your vehicle on the road can be the biggest challenge of winter driving! Here is a cold weather driving checklist to increase the likelihood of a safe arrival for all. • you can’t avoid what you can’t see. Before even starting out take the time to completely clear your vehicle of snow or ice, and defrost all windows and mirrors • drive for the conditions, not the posted speed limit. Take it easy on the roads and signal your turns and lane changes well in advance • When turning, accelerating, or stopping, slow down to maintain control of the vehicle and avoid loss of traction on the roads • increase the distance between yourself and the car in front of you: it may take you twice as long to stop your vehicle • don’t drive with a false sense of security if you’ve got a fouror allwheel drive vehicle: these features reduce your likelihood of getting stuck but in many cases won’t help you stop any faster
Joke of the Month I bought a box of animal crackers and it said on it “Do not eat if seal is broken.” So I opened up the box, and sure enough... (Brian Kiley)
• use lower driving lights in poor visibility and snow: this improves your own ability to see and helps others spot you! • excessive use of heaters, defrosters and other electrical devices can place added strain on your battery, which in turn increases the chance of your car stalling or not restarting. Use only as long as needed • keep a sharp eye out for other road users who may also be having difficulties in winter conditions • if you do find yourself skidding on ice or snow, don’t turn the steering wheel aggressively or keep your foot on the brake: instead, ease off the gas pedal, steer gently and prepare yourself and passengers for the unexpected Happy New Year and safe travels!

In “La Mamma” Choquette presides over the stage as a gleefully extravagant diva who’s been there and done that! “My name is Mrs. O Sole Mio, but you can call me Mamma.” Mamma is Choquette’s zany and brainy Italian mother character who was born in Naples and moved to America with her favorite pasta and a song for every mood. After working for years as a cook at the local pizzeria, Mamma is suddenly kicked upstairs to begin a new phase of life as an international speaker and life coach for the rich and famous. There will not be a dull moment at this 7:30pm performance at VIU’s Malaspina Theatre on Saturday, January 30. This theatre presentation is uniquely humorous, with Choquette using laughter to explore classical music and the power, emotion and brilliance of opera.

PET TIP 15 Minutes I recently had a foster dog at my house, a very sweet ten pound boy with some behavior problems that made it hard to find him a forever home. We’ve had foster dogs before, but Buster was different. We have two big girl labs that have more energy then they know what to do with. This little boy made me realize a few things: 1) We’ve never owned a boy dog…and boy dogs are different (ask my 7 year old)
2) We’ve never lived with small dogs…and small dogs are different.
Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital
was a bit confused about the lack of swimming…but after the first few days she happily reminds me that we need to gather the kids and go out. I don’t need a New Years Resolution, which means for the first year ever I can’t break it. We made our lives different before Christmas, and discovered how happy 15 minutes could make us. Happy New Year, and I hope you all find your 15 minutes this year.
3) I really enjoy getting up early and taking a dog for a walk…no really
I’m not a morning person. Never have been. The labs are happy to go to the lake in the afternoon for a walk and swim, and they prefer not to be limited by the speed of the humans they go with. But little Buster would have none of it. He was used to having his walks in the morning, and his life had changed too much for me to deny him. So off we went. The first few mornings were rough, I think I may have taken a couple of them with my eyes closed. And on the fourth day it rained…and continued to rain. The foster dog decided that on rainy days we could take a break…but I figured that if he was dragging me out for early morning walks; I was dragging him out when it was raining.

Do you know what I discovered by the second week? Taking that extra 15 minutes in the morning gave me more time to get ready for my day, helped ease our new friend into the house routine, and helped to make both of our days easier.
My ten pound foster dog learned what it was to be a forty pound lab and we worked hard to get him comfortable in his own skin. The little guy made it to his forever home in time for Christmas, and is very loved. The last picture I got from them showed him upside down on the couch, fast asleep. An unheard of level of comfort in his level of life.
And me? I found myself missing the walks after a couple of days. I convinced the younger lab to join me outside on a leash for a trip around the block. She

The talent, the people and the passions behind Western
Canada’s Premier musical tribute to Pink Floyd, “Time”
“What’s On,” offers a glimpse into the band TIME and their diverse and eclectic mix of musicians. Article by Simon Rideout Starting with talent, this incredible line up has more than 100 years of collective musical experience. Their vast experience ranges from performing in theatre, choir and competing in Idol competitions to teaching, touring and recording. As individual musicians each member shines on their own merits, as a collective group of highly talented band members they shine on brighter than crazy diamonds. Talent is a mandatory ingredient to respectfully pay tribute to one of the most iconic bands of all time, however the passion and the people behind Time take this band to holding the title of Western Canada’s Premier Pink Floyd tribute band. Terry was one of 12 winners of the 2009 Valley Idol competition beating out 141 other singers. Additionally, Terry recorded an original song on the album produced at the end of the competition. For a brief time in the 90’s Terry played in a band called “In Transit” with Uriah Heap’s front man as their singer. Terry states “For me, I was a Beatles fan initially. I still am of course.” As a kid in his mid-teens, Terry’s older brother Trevor started to buy albums from bands like Yes, Klaatu, Uriah Heep and Pink Floyd. “We would hang out and listen to these great bands, and for me it was always “hey put that Pink Floyd back on” stated Terry. As a fairly new musician back then Terry says, “listening to Pink Floyd really opened my mind to the “possibilities” of where I could go with my music. I have always found them to be very interesting, intricate and thought provoking and each song it seems intentionally brings out a different mood in peo-
ple. It is such a pleasure to play these great “works of art” - in fact it is like when you find the right person for you, the more you learn about them the more you love and appreciate them.” Holly, 25, is the newest member of Time. She has over 15 years of performing experience, with an emphasis on vocals and guitar. Influenced heavily by blues, folk, classical, and rock and roll, Holly’s musical talents were encouraged early on by her parents, who also happened to be huge Pink Floyd fans. “Playing in a Pink Floyd Tribute Band is truly a dream come true. I feel to have a chance to perform my favourite songs with some incredibly talented musicians,” Holly says. Kerri shares; “One of the highlights of my performing career would be starring as Patsy Cline in “A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline”. That role really brought out my voice and taught me stage presence”. That presence comes alive when performing with her band mates singing background vocals to Floyd classics like Mother, Comfortably Numb and Money. Dani: I sang with my local community choir for the past 12 years; that put me in contact with Blaine. I am really thankful for the opportunity to sing with such an accomplished band as my first band experience. I’ve had some stage experience with lead roles in a few musicals but the stage production of Time has really challenged me in my harmonization and subtle staging effects of being a background singer. I didn’t really know any Pink Floyd music before I started in this band
so it’s steep but worthwhile learning curve. Blaine has spent much of his music career singing, acting and directing in many musicals. In his most recent acting gig he played Brad in the Rocky Horror Show. Blaine played in the cover band “Dean Martini” for 15 years and sang in the adult choir Timbre! for many years in Port Alberni. His Time contributions include playing guitar, saxophone, percussion, and singing. His love for Floyd music is undeniable, as demonstrated in Time’s version of In the Flesh. Jim grew up a Pink Floyd and Beatles fan. “I always thought in the 80’s that David Gilmour was under rated for his feel and sense of melody”. Jim is a published Nashville songwriter and has also written soundtrack music for DVD releases as well as backing tracks for local television. Jim’s wicked guitar solos mesmerize both his band mates and the audience. While no one can deny he’s pouring his soul into every solo he makes them appear effortless; a trademark of natural talent. Gerry states “I’ve been playing drums professionally since 1971. I have toured in a variety of bands all across Canada. Lived out of a suitcase with no fixed address for close to 3 years - it was great!” Gerry’s professional career had him on stage with the likes of Jerry Doucette and Brian McLeod. His musical influences include the Beatles, Guess Who, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd of course. “My first impressions of Pink Floyd were mixed. They had great songs, but they appealed more to an older “experimenting” crowd - I was too young for that. Later on as a young adult, I started listening to them in new light – their music would “take me away” - and still does! Recently, when I was asked to be a part of this tribute, I had to go back and listen even more closely, and decide. With my 56 year old ears, I knew I had to do this - but I also knew I had to be true to Nick Mason, and his feel. Our stylings are similar, but he has some signature landmarks that

have to be met, and that was the challenge I wanted. The music is insanely clever, and most of their songs are written “outside of the box” - which makes them so perfect. Now I get to play the songs that remind me of my youth, and salute the band that wrote them - thank you Pink Floyd!” Greg is an experienced and proficient bass and guitar player. Greg grew up listening and playing in original based early 90’s rock bands. His band Never The Less and Breathing Room recorded 2 cd’s. Greg’s rock roots helps give Time the edgy bottom end for songs like Young Lust and Have A Cigar. Graham is a professional performer and songwriter with 25 years of experience in the music business. He has toured across Canada playing Rock, Country and Blues with various professional bands. He is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music for piano and holds a diploma in Jazz studies from VIU. His musical highlights include writing and performing original music for the band Yesterdays Fate and performing for large audiences across the country including 3,000 people at the Calgary Stampede. A lifelong fan of British rock, playing in Time realizes a dream of performing the music of Pink Floyd in the large venues with talented musicians, light show and presentation it deserves. Time generously shares their talents and passion for Pink Floyd music with their audience - but don’t take our word for it, come see for yourself! If you want to see Western Canada’s Premier Tribute to Pink Floyd, soak up an amazing laser show choreographed to Floyd’s timeless classics then please join us at the Port Theatre February 19 2016. Take this as your official invitation to be Comfortably Numb with some of Western Canada’s best musicians playing homage to one of the best bands of all time… and we welcome you to our machine!

AN INTERVIEW WITH
Port Theatre Feb 21 interview by Tina Coldwell (for What’s On Digest) with the bass player and band member Ryan Gullen. more in the long run. As far as bands to watch for, we’re bringing a band called Beat Cops on our tour
WO: How do you feel touring in Canada especially coming to Vancouver Island?
RG: Touring in Canada is always an interesting experience, especially in January and February. There’s a certain pride that comes from travelling across and seeing the entire country all in a month that makes you feel very patriotic. It’s always nice to make it to the west coast and get a taste of warmer weather to break up the trip. Vancouver Island has always been special to us. WO: Are you still attached Saskatchewan roots?

your
RG: I think we always will be attached to our Saskatchewan roots as that’s where we’re from. The more you travel and see the world and experience a lot of things and cultures, it still leaves you thinking of home. WO: Do you think you guys are trend setters in the music business these days? Are there some cool bands that look up to you we should be watching for? RG: I wouldn’t say we’re trend setters. We’re just a bunch of guys that like to play rock and roll music and travel around. I do feel in this day and age with the internet and there being tons of bands out there, hard work does pay off
WO: What was it like working with Patrick Carney from the Black Keys?
RG: At the time when we made that record we had just come off of a crazy schedule and all the wildness of the Rolling Stone contest. Pat is someone we respect who has a ton of experience navigating the world of music at that next level, so it was really great to have him help us out and give us some guidance while recording our record. WO: Any prospects in the future you are looking ahead to?
RG: Since we just released a record, we will be touring and promoting it for the next while. We’re always looking ahead and I think we will find time to do some more recording in the near future as we’re always raring to make new music and get it out there.

The second offering by Western Edge Theatre in their 2015 - 2016 Series is the sensual hit comedy ‘Venus in Fur’ by David Ives. It follows the life of Thomas, a literary type who has adapted a classic erotic novel to the stage and can’t believe his luck when he finds the perfect actress to play the lead role of Vanda, a fierce, commanding dominatrix. But the actress begins to deconstruct Thomas’s writing, motives, and even his relationship with his fiancée. ‘Venus in Fur’ blends literature, sex, and sexual politics into a potent comic aphrodisiac. Described by The New York Times as “Ninety minutes of good, kinky fun,” Venus in Fur plays Jan. 22, 23, 29, and 30 at 7:30 pm, and Jan. 31 at 2 pm. Happy New Year. From the management and faculty of Spotlight Academy. With over 40 film productions last year on Vancouver Island, we welcome 2016 with great anticipation. Monkeys, dogs and of course, thousands of people appeared in feature film, episodic, commercials, infomercials, web series and short films, a rapidly booming sector of the film industry on Vancouver Island. To celebrate a bumper year, we give thanks for the work of our Film Commissioners Joan Miller and Kathleen Gilbert, without these two power houses in the North and South, major productions would not find the jeweled locations of our beautiful island. To facilitate production with talent, Spotlight Academy has been training actors for almost twenty years with many appearing opposite A listers. To the industry professionals who give their time. Producers, Directors, Casting Directors, Actors, we are thankful for the education you bring with workshops and ongoing classes. To my students, actors and film makers of the mid island, you are artists of cultural importance. Film, finally has a sense of belonging and I am witnessing a dream become reality. Happy New Year with thanks. Jacqui Kaese, Spotlight Academy
