HOME&LIFE Time for Spring Cleaning!

Among the many ‘rites of spring’ there are perhaps few as satisfying as throwing open the windows and cleaning the house top to bottom. After a cold, dark winter of closed windows, muddy boots, wood-burning stoves, dust and dander, spring cleaning signifies the return of warmer weather and spending time outside. Here are a few tips to help you freshen your home.

• A good airing will reduce the allergens and

germs in mattresses, even if you can’t lug them outside. Sprinkling baking soda on a mattress, letting it sit a short time, then vacuuming it off can freshen it too.

• When dusting pay special attention to switch

plates and the outside edges of doors, where people tend to grab.

• When

washing bed linens, wash them in order of what goes on the bed first. If you’re switching over to lighter quilts, wash the winter bedding before putting it away, because moths and other insects are attracted to body oil, perspiration and perfume.

• When

cleaning heavy drapes, use the

and shampooing carpets, and sweeping and mopping floors can make living spaces feel fresh. Don’t forget to dust those lamps, countertops, books and shelves first!

There are any number of great natural cleaning products on the market that are safe for people, pets and the environment. Brands like Seventh Generation and Mrs. Meyers produce all-purpose cleaners, glass and surface cleaners, shower cleaners, tub and tile cleaners, furniture polish and more. Sometimes, however, the purest, simplest, most effective cleaners are items you already have in the house! Lemon juice and vinegar are great for cleaning windows and cutting through grease, and vinegar is useful for preventing mold formation. Ordinary table salt or sea salt is great for scrubbing and scouring touch dirt and grime. And baking soda is fabulous for scrubbing, scouring, cleaning and deodorizing.

Pants that Fit...

Tips to fit your body shape this Spring

If you are Petite (5’4” or under)... Try a trimmed crop pant by Lisette L, Renuar or FDJ... Joseph Ribkoff have a vertical crease down front or back which makes legs appear longer. Compression fabrics tend to also slim leg and give height. FULL HIPS & THIGHS

You may want a Peggy Fit from FDJ or a classic pant by Tribal where the cut falls down from the widest part of the thigh.. a slight bootcut or straight leg (not skinny) will help your curves look less wide

TALL GIRLS...

carry off a fabulous flare pant.. yes they are back and Plazzo pants too.

IF YOU HAVE A TUMMY

Try straight leg pant and one that sits neatly at your waist. Try a Lisette L pull on pant with tummy control. Avoid pleats or baggy cuts.. Brings attention to middrift.

LARGE DERRIÈRE

If your backside is bigger than the rest of your frame..Fit your bum and take in the waist..Save waist alterations by trying the Flatter me Belt..website..www. flattermebelts.com

Interview with lead singer, Mike Demers by Tina Coldwell

The Lonely is a group of experienced musicians and performers who share a deep appreciation of the music of Roy Orbison. The band approaches the music with a humble spirit and desire to recreate the sounds and feel of the original Orbison recordings.

Tina: What motivated you to do a Roy Orbison show?

tribute acts that people go see in the theatre?

Mike: I am not sure how we are Mike: While singing on Salt Spring different but we have wanted to Island as a solo performer over the present a show that reflects our past 5 years I have been encouraged admiration and love of the music of by the reaction I was getting to my Roy Orbison. Rather than trying to renditions of several Roy Orbison impersonate Roy Orbison we want songs. Many Phillip Sutton at the Mary Winspear of the communities we play in have Centre in Sidney and he agreed to wonderful networks and it is Roy allow us to book our first show (Jan Orbison fans who really generate an 31 2015). strong interest by talking to friends Tina: How is this different from other

and relatives.

Tina: That success must be exciting does it come with its own challenges? Mike: I think the main challenge for us to convey to our audiences that we are Roy Orbison fans’ just like they are’ and that our attempt is to keep his memory alive. Tina: What are your future plans with this show do you plan on expanding outside of Canada? Mike: We would love to play in the United States and over in Europe.

We are fortunate enough to have the Feldman Agency working with us and once we have toured Canada we will be looking at other countries. Tina: What is your personal taste in music? Article by Kerith Waddington

Spring Driving Hold your horses! (or at least, your horsepower). Spring may have sprung and the open road may beckon, but it’s important to adjust your driving habits to the changing conditions that can accompany better weather. Here are a few reminders to help keep you - and everyone around you! - safe this spring. • Don’t be too quick to take off your winter tires. They should be left on until the ambient temperatures stay above 7 degrees Celsius • Meltwater on the road can freeze when the sun stops shining and the temperatures drop. If you notice wet-looking roads and the temperatures have dropped below freezing, expect ice and slow down • Warmer weather brings out motorcyclists and cyclists. Looking out for and respecting smaller two-wheeled travellers is an important part of safe motoring • Likewise, cyclists and bikers need to ride wisely and make sure they are visible to motorists and truckers. Cyclists should wear brightly coloured clothing or safety vests, use lights, keep right and ride in single file • Warmer weather brings more children outside. Slow down and be particularly careful in residential and school zones. School kids are easily distracted by play and don’t always notice traffic. Be alert too for teenagers who may be focused on texting, socializing or cellphones

• With spring come potholes! Staying well back of the vehicle in front gives you more time to see wheel-bending potholes and reduces your chances of being hit by kicked-up rocks • Melt water can make gravel shoulders much softer than usual. Use extra care if you’re pulling off the road and don’t rush your return to the pavement • Many animals that hibernate through winter are now on the move foraging for food. Being prepared for this can help prevent both animal deaths and damage to your vehicle. Remember to slow down in rural areas or where animal traffic is expected. Motorists have died or have been seriously injured swerving to avoid animals If you’re on the roads this spring by all means roll down your window and let the spring breezes blow! But if you’re the one behind the wheel it’s important to stay focused on the task of driving and let your passengers enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of spring in safety.
