Our own homes have always offered sanctuary from the outside world. During the colder months of winter, however, our sanctuary may not be as conducive to good rest and relaxation as it is the rest of the year. Closed windows and any number of indoor air pollutants - from wood-burning stoves and dryers to perfumes, glue, carpeting, pet dander, dust mites and mold - can contribute to headaches, long-lasting colds, bronchitis and asthma. Thankfully, there are a number of steps we can take to improve indoor air quality. To get you started... • houseplants don’t just look nice - they clean and purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen! Some are also great filters that can reduce toxic agents such as benzene and formaldehyde from your home. A few great starters include palms, spider plants, ferns and rubber plants. Check out the ‘NASA Clean Air Study’ for a list of pet-safe plants and which toxic agent(s) each has been shown to reduce • air purifiers can help remove allergens, harmful particles and odours from your home. Be sure to do your research: air purifiers with HEPA filters, carbonactivated filters and electrostaticallycharged dust collection grids all come highly recommended • when weather permits, throw open your windows and air out your house! • regular cleaning reduces airborne pollutants like pollen, pet dander and dust mites. Be sure to use non-toxic cleaning products or you’ll be replacing one air-quality

issue with another. Choosing low or no VOC cleaning products that are fragrance-free is a good start. Wash bedding once a week in hot water, and be sure to dust with a damp cloth, not a dry one

By lowering levels of known irritants and increasing ventilation whenever possible, your home can remain a healthy as well as happy sanctuary throughout the year!

Reducing Stress Behind the Wheel Being behind the wheel is stressful at the best of times. Add in several of the many challenges that can crop up including heavy traffic, being tailgated or cut off, detours, bad weather, screaming children, being late, being hungry, getting lost and you have conditions for a ‘perfect storm’ of stress. While many of the aforementioned are out of our control, taking charge of those we can manage and applying stressreduction techniques for those we can’t can help us arrive at our destination a little less frazzled. • start out calm: don’t drive if exhausted or angry, both of which can impair our judgement • figure out your route before you go, and allow enough time to get there • if you have babies or children on board make sure to pack snacks/games/activities to keep them occupied • distracted driving grooming, eating, talking on the phone or texting while driving can kill. Take care of basics before getting behind the wheel. ‘Be aware and drive with care’

Sunfest Country Music Festival Moves To Laketown Ranch in 2016 Duncan B.C.: On the evening of January 13, 2016, members of the Cowichan Valley Regional District voted in favour of Sunfest Country Music Festival moving the 4-day event to their newly purchased property of Laketown Ranch, 5km outside of Lake Cowichan BC. The 172-acre parcel of land will be the new permanent home of Sunfest, BC’s premiere country music festival.

“We couldn’t be more excited by the news,” comments Emmalee Brunt, PR and Marketing Manager for Sunfest Concerts. “The entire Sunfest Team cannot express their gratitude enough to the CVRD, the community of the Cowichan Lake Region and our extended Sunfest Family for their continual support.” Over the next two weeks the Sunfest Team will be fine-tuning the details and design of Laketown Ranch, with the plans unveiling on Monday, February 1, 2016. The new festival site will provide increased capacity for parking, additional space for camping, improved reserved seating, an amphitheater concert bowl and an event that blends seamlessly into

its’ natural surroundings through site design. Festival Management will work closely with the District of North Cowichan to develop a strategic traffic plan for 2016 and beyond.

“What we’re really fired up about is the fact that we can literally build and curate the best festival experience possible,” comments Brunt. “Get ready for specially crafted infrastructure, state of the art staging and production, a festival village hub and so much more. Laketown Ranch will serve as a permanent festival and event site, and that’s something to get excited about.” Sunfest’s new home is similar to the layout of the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds, who has graciously hosted the event for many years. Meet Matteo Pizzo, Personal Chef My name is Matteo Pizzo, I am 28-year-old Chef born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. I have had a real passion for cooking ever since I was a child! I grew up in an Italian family, where amazing food was central to all events. I’m an Algonquin College 2007 Alumni Graduate from the 2-year Culinary Management program. I have completed my Journeyman Red Seal Certificate in 2011 from the Ontario Ministry of Trades with over 6000hrs.

Most recently, I spent the last 2 years working in Whistler BC as the Chef for the Renowned Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort at the Rendezvous Ski Lodge located 7000ft up Blackcomb Mountain. I’ve also spent a summer working at one of British Columbia’s top golf courses the Jack Nicklaus named, Nicklaus North Golf Course & Table Nineteen Lakeside Eatery in Whistler BC as the morning Sous Chef. Not to mention my time spent as the Sous Chef of Club Red Restaurant, & the Suites Department for the Ottawa Senators Hockey Team of the NHL. I moved to Nanaimo recently to start my new venture, with over 10 years of professional experience in the Culinary Industry.

I’m a creative, enthusiastic, hardworking chef with a passion for food with extensive experience working in busy hospitality establishments such as fine dining restaurants, hotels, golf courses, NHL hockey team, number one ski resort in North America and catering for wedding & special events.

My professional experience and culinary training in cuisines including, French, Italian, North-American, West coast, and East coast cuisine has made me a wellrounded Chef equipped to take on any challenge.
