HOME&LIFE Breath Easy...
Our own homes have always offered sanctuary from the outside world. During the colder months of winter, however, our sanctuary may not be as conducive to good rest and relaxation as it is the rest of the year. Closed windows and any number of indoor air pollutants - from wood-burning stoves and dryers to perfumes, glue, carpeting, pet dander, dust mites and mold - can contribute to headaches, long-lasting colds, bronchitis and asthma. Thankfully, there are a number of steps we can take to improve indoor air quality. To get you started... • houseplants don’t just look nice - they clean and purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen! Some are also great filters that can reduce toxic agents such as benzene and formaldehyde from your home. A few great starters include palms, spider plants, ferns and rubber plants. Check out the ‘NASA Clean Air Study’ for a list of pet-safe plants and which toxic agent(s) each has been shown to reduce • air purifiers can help remove allergens, harmful particles and odours from your home. Be sure to do your research: air purifiers with HEPA filters, carbonactivated filters and electrostaticallycharged dust collection grids all come highly recommended • when weather permits, throw open your windows and air out your house! • regular cleaning reduces airborne pollutants like pollen, pet dander and dust mites. Be sure to use non-toxic cleaning products or you’ll be replacing one air-quality
issue with another. Choosing low or no VOC cleaning products that are fragrance-free is a good start. Wash bedding once a week in hot water, and be sure to dust with a damp cloth, not a dry one
By lowering levels of known irritants and increasing ventilation whenever possible, your home can remain a healthy as well as happy sanctuary throughout the year!

Matt Andersen has been enthralling audiences with his one-of-a-kind performance in North America, Europe and Australia for years. Earlier this fall, the award winning artist once again decamped from his New Brunswick home – this time to record his upcoming album. Produced in New York with Commissioner Gordon (Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, KRS-One), Honest Manfollows up the JUNO Award nominated Weightless and sees the songwriter pushing himself into new territory. Blessed with a rich gospel soul voice and armed with a new set of songs, Matt Andersen found a perfect partner in crime with Commissioner Gordon. “Gordon has worked with so many different people, like Santana and Quincy Jones, on so many historic albums,” says Andersen. “He has such a great approach and was able to tie-in so many new ideas to what I’ve done in the past without losing touch with my sound.”
the political and the personal. The title track, co- written with Chris Kirby, was inspired by a US political cartoon while “Let’s Get Back”, co-penned with Andy Stochansky, has Andersen thinking about how his country as a nation has changed, but not for the better. “Who Are You Listening To?” was hatched with Ryan Hupman during a pre-election social media flood and emerges as rally call for people to make up their own minds and not be swung by the ‘information’ we’re being fed.
On “All The Way”, written with Gordie Sampson, Andersen takes a more personal approach as he sings about the decision to fully commit to a relationship, while on the alluring piano ballad “I’m Giving In”, composed with Andy Stochansky and Jamie “He has such a great approach and Hartman, he muses about was able to tie-in so many new ideas the moments leading up to that commitment. to what I’ve done in the past without

Following an exceptionally successful season, Mark DuMez, Artistic Director, is pleased to announce the Chemainus Theatre Festival’s 2016 season, a lineup that is rich with music, drama, comedy, dance and spectacular artistry! We love producing shows that excite, challenge, and delight and we invite you to join us in every laugh, song, step and note of our exciting season. What shows will you see? The season features seven main stage productions and includes a new production of the Million Dollar Quartet, as the bad boys of SUN records tear their way up the charts. With Harvey and Hilda, laughter connects character to family, imagination and love. We will rollick through the summer musical with Footloose as generations clash and dance. Four strong women bond together in A Lovely Sunday, our first Tennessee Williams work in over a decade. And the holidays bring it all together in Ralphie’s quest for a Red Ryder, a leg lamp prize and a dream Christmas with A Christmas Story. Falling: A Wake on the Studio Stage and Chemainus Theatre original – Pet the Fish (KidzPlay summer show).
The Chemainus Theatre Festival thrives as people from all over Vancouver Island congregate to enjoy the intimate energy of high caliber professional actors and creative teams from across Canada. We delve in together, taking in the textures of well-made costumes, intrigued by the clever use of sculptural scenery and vivid lights and sound – all this goodness in a sea-side town full of artistry and eclectic adventure. Whether it’s the ache for nostalgia, the need for a good belly laugh, the swing of a well-played tune or the crackle of a wellturned phrase – something in us longs for a great story well told. Dig in with tickets to another outstanding year. Season tickets, single tickets (on sale now), groups and parties will all enjoy an experience of live professional theatre! Tickets are available for evening (Wednesday, Thursday - 7:30 p.m., Friday, Saturday - 8:00 p.m.) and matinee (Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday - 2:00 p.m.) performances. Purchases can be made online at chemainustheatre.ca, or by calling The Chemainus Theatre Festival box office at 1-800-565-7738.
The Chemainus Theatre Festival, est. 1993, is a professional performing arts destination on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Dedicated to serving versatile interests of audiences and artists, The Festival has attracted talented guest actors, directors, musicians and
designers from across North America – a testament to their highly regarded theatrical productions and facilities. Theatregoers can complete their theatre experience with a delightful meal in the Playbill Dining Room. Before each show, live music creates the perfect setting for diners to indulge in the impressive showthemed buffet. The onsite Gallery Gift Shop showcases over one hundred BC artisans, and is a wonderful place for art-lovers and shoppers to browse, and take home, a memorable piece of the west coast.
“Million Dollar Quartet”
plays it fast and loose at The Chemainus Theatre Festival! The Chemainus Theatre Festival presents Million Dollar Quartet, a popular Broadway musical inspired by actual events. In the mid-1950’s, four young and talented musicians met by chance, and made music history, in one red-hot jam session. Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash are famous for their legendary songs and rock ‘n’ roll hits. Million Dollar Quartet is the acclaimed story about their astonishing careers and this landmark day in music history. Playing at the Festival theatre from February 12 – March 26, 2016. Tickets are available now at 1-800-565-7738 or chemainustheatre.ca.

By Christopher Grew
I hope you all had some warm, wonderful times with friends and family over the Holidays. Seems like quite a while ago now. To me, that is the best part of Christmas.
the bill later.” And then, ‘later’ comes.
If you have little ones who still believe in the ‘magic’, your Christmas is seen through their eyes of wonder, as the kids marvel at the gifts ‘Santa’ left for them.
Your consultation is free.
Sitting by the fire, the decorations all aglow, your favorite beverage in your hand and engaging in warm conversations with your loved ones.
In the old days, many gifts were homemade and in some cases took months to create. Imagine the thought and love someone would put into making a gift with a special person in mind. The forethought that, if it was going to be ready for Christmas, they might have begun making it in June. Ah, the good old days. Unfortunately, today, homemade gifts are rare and store bought is the norm.
That’s the part I don’t like about Christmas. The amount of mass advertising imploring us to spend, spend, spend. The pressure we feel about what to get for everyone on our list. It can be enormous. It can cause us to overspend. As the retail stores count their profits from our Holiday spending, many of us will be counting the dollars owed on our credit cards as the bills roll in in January and February. Many will have stayed within our budgets and will have a plan for repayment. Others may have succumbed to the pressure to overspend with the idea of,”I’ll deal with
If your Holiday debt, added to the other debt you were already carrying, has become the straw that broke the camel’s back, you may feel you want some advice on how to deal with it all. There are many options, some you might not even be aware of. Christopher Grew is a Debt Consultant serving clients on Southern Vancouver Island.
Wounded Warriors Canada is a nonprofit organization that helps Canadian Forces members who have been wounded or injured in their service to Canada. They help find therapeutic programs and solutions for military men and women in need. Currently, their primary focus is on mental health and, particularly, the staggering impact of PTSD and Operational Stress Injuries.
To provide increased public awareness and financial support for Wounded Warriors Canada, the “Wounded Warrior Run BC” (WWRBC) was created. A team of dedicated runners will relay run the length of Vancouver Island for six consecutive days, starting Monday, 22 Feb 2016 and finishing Sunday, 28 Feb 2016. The journey will begin in Port Hardy and end in Victoria. Covering an excess of 600 km.

Whats n Wheels
Article by Kerith Waddington
Reducing Stress Behind the Wheel Being behind the wheel is stressful at the best of times. Add in several of the many challenges that can crop up including heavy traffic, being tailgated or cut off, detours, bad weather, screaming children, being late, being hungry, getting lost and you have conditions for a ‘perfect storm’ of stress. While many of the aforementioned are out of our control, taking charge of those we can manage and applying stressreduction techniques for those we can’t can help us arrive at our destination a little less frazzled. • start out calm: don’t drive if exhausted or angry, both of which can impair our judgement • figure out your route before you go, and allow enough time to get there • if you have babies or children on board make sure to pack snacks/games/activities to keep them occupied • distracted driving grooming, eating, talking on the phone or texting while driving can kill. Take care of basics before getting behind the wheel. ‘Be aware and drive with care’
away from aggressive drivers and don’t make eye contact. Labelling them in your mind for instance, calling them ‘an idiot’ can help get rid of your anger and lets you refocus on the road • if you’re facing a long commute listen to an audiobook so it doesn’t feel like wasted time • stuck at a light? Take the time to stretch and breathe deeply, both of which can reduce tension
• choose a cool mindset: accept that some people will not drive considerately or responsibly and decide that you won’t let them bother you. Get
Essentially what we have control over is how we manage ourselves within the world. With a bit of planning and selfpreparation we can make our time here and the trips we take great!

Sunfest Country Music Festival Moves To Laketown Ranch in 2016 Duncan B.C.: On the evening of January 13, 2016, members of the Cowichan Valley Regional District voted in favour of Sunfest Country Music Festival moving the 4-day event to their newly purchased property of Laketown Ranch, 5km outside of Lake Cowichan BC. The 172-acre parcel of land will be the new permanent home of Sunfest, BC’s premiere country music festival.
“We couldn’t be more excited by the news,” comments Emmalee Brunt, PR and Marketing Manager for Sunfest Concerts. “The entire Sunfest Team cannot express their gratitude enough to the CVRD, the community of the Cowichan Lake Region and our extended Sunfest Family for their continual support.” Over the next two weeks the Sunfest Team will be fine-tuning the details and design of Laketown Ranch, with the plans unveiling on Monday, February 1, 2016. The new festival site will provide increased capacity for parking, additional space for camping, improved reserved seating, an amphitheater concert bowl and an event that blends seamlessly into
its’ natural surroundings through site design. Festival Management will work closely with the District of North Cowichan to develop a strategic traffic plan for 2016 and beyond.
“What we’re really fired up about is the fact that we can literally build and curate the best festival experience possible,” comments Brunt. “Get ready for specially crafted infrastructure, state of the art staging and production, a festival village hub and so much more. Laketown Ranch will serve as a permanent festival and event site, and that’s something to get excited about.” Sunfest’s new home is similar to the layout of the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds, who has graciously hosted the event for many years. Ticket holders are reminded that their tickets and camping passes will be transferred to the new site with seamless transition. The Sunfest Team would again like to express their gratitude to the entire community, the Cow Ex Society who have played to the District of North Cowichan. Thank you!

There is a real treat in store for classical music lovers at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre this month: the ‘Morning Musicale’ guest artist is Dutch soprano Anne Grimm. Anne has been recognized internationally for her “captivating voice” (Globe and Mail) and “expressive technique” (Classics Today). She has toured Europe, performed Mozart’s “Exultate Jubilate” for the Royal Household of the Netherlands, and been a soloist with multiple orchestra’s and groups in North America. Presenting Anne on stage Feb 29 will be internallyacclaimed classical pianist Sarah Hagen as she hosts “Morning Musicale’. The classical coffee concert series features onstage seating, pre-concert chats and a table of treats. Don’t miss the chance for an intimate, personal musical experience you will always remember! 2687 James Street Duncan, BC V9L 2X5 Phone (250) 748-7529 www.cowichanpac.ca
