COLLECTIVE BUILD-UP [Women driven socio-spatial change] Location: Karachi, Pakistan Design Date: Autumn 2019 Position: Member of a team of three Design Studio: Build Up or Build Out
[Re-Imagining Habitats in a Hyper Transforming Context Case of the Megapolis - Karachi - Pakistan]
Tutor: Asiya Sadiq
Located in the hyper-transforming city of Karachi, Pakistan, our project is based on female empowerment, community involvement and micro-financing. To answer the question of “smart densification”, we propose combining a micro-financing model with spatial solutions for the street and housing. “Smart densification” of a street entails using vernacular passive solutions to meet the demands of climate and privacy. These include usage of jalis - semi transparent shading, cross ventilation, wind catchers and textile shading solutions. Coordinating these changes within a community on a single street makes climate changes effective and also makes possible utilization of shared spaces, such as stairs and terraces. The community also flexibly shares parts of their private space and so, creates collective space. Collective space builds on the practices of close-knit informal communities and provides more usable space in dense areas while preserving treasured property lines.

Better City
Simply put, our project is based on female empowerment, community involvement and micro-financing. We aim to improve the daily life of the women, their families, the street and finally the whole city. In the beginning, the concept and basic idea are introduced by an NGO, which also provides initial skills training. Through the process, women from the community gradually take over the role of project leaders and start teaching skills to neighbouring communities. In result, our project becomes a pilot-project that grows over time and spreads to different areas of the city, creating a network of change lead by women. Women of the community meet together for mutual support and gradually identify problems of their community. Cooperating with their families, they propose solutions and work together on them. Additional support of an NGO is assumed with regards to materials and skills. Developing the project tightens the bond of the community, which allows them to work on more projects. Improvements to their lives can be felt in the family, street, neighbourhood and eventually, the city.

HOUSEHOLDS
We propose combining the micro-financing model with spatial solutions for the street and housing. The community shares funding, decides and executes changes to public space and coordinates changes to private property. The micro-financing model is based on meetings of women. A group of women living in one unit gather weekly to collect their daily savings and discuss personal as well as family issues. This way, trust is developed, which allows for the common use of the fund. The whole street community gathers on a monthly basis to discuss the improvements for their community, manages the micro-savings-fund, and develops a social connection through small projects and the time spent together.

In this area of Karachi, the tertiary street is not a well-used space. It is too narrow to host business and encroachments in many places make it dark and inhospitable. It is also unpredictably used by cars and motorcycles, which makes it dangerous for children and the elderly. By closing off the back street from traffic, the street becomes accessible for women and children and becomes available for community use. Paving and lights add to the comfort of the street. Nearby courtyards can be easily opened up to create a larger community space. Since multiple women work from home, children can be watched while they play on the street. In the long run, the street serves a living lab - a testing ground for strategies for change as an example for other communities. People from around Karachi can come and experience the different feel of the transformed street.

Proposed Schematic Section In our proposed project, the first phase includes using the funds to implement small changes within the neighbourhood. Later, the money is used for housing transformation and smart build up. The community level of micro-finance goes hand in hand with the spatial notion of the collective. The second phase deals with housing transformation. With the natural growth of the families through marriages, kids or expanding businesses, the inhabitants need additional space. Using loans from the micro-fund and the skills acquired from the project, the families can build up their houses and implement architectural changes to improve the ventilation and lighting. At the same time, the units get connected through shared bridges and courtyards and new collective spaces are created. The necessary privacy and possibility to build up is retained.

In the first phase of the project, the savings of the fund are used to implement small changes within the neighbourhood. By closing off the back street from traffic, the street becomes accessible for women and kids and becomes available for community use. Paving makes life easier. As trust is gained, families start opening their private spaces to collective use. Abandoned plots are cleaned from garbage and used for storage of building material as well as neighbourhood-scale festivities.

Villa No.336 Location: Minoosa Gated Community, Gilavand, Iran Design Date: 2018-2019 Gross Floor Area: 530 m² Land Area: 990 m² Position: Partner Architect Firm: Shaboffice
Gilavand Villa is my latest project. It is a villa in a gated community in suburb of Tehran. We designed this vacation house for a family of 4 in three levels. There was some opportunities such as the view of Damavand mount ( the highest in Iran) and also some limitations such as privacy from the view of neighbors and also some environmental problems we had to avoid. Minosa’s development guidelines requires a minimum 2.5m border from east and west and a minimum 6m distance from the south plot lines. The north yard shall always be bigger than the south yard.

Charsou Bazaaris a multifunctinal public building locates in the downtown of Tehran, at the corner of the junction of two important streets Hafez & Jomhouri. The physical program of this project contains several functions, such as big and small shops, food court, cultural spaces and 5 cinemas. We decided to divide the project into three parts for two reasons, first because of the functions from the inside of the project, and second, for the relation of the building with the city in three levels.(As you can see in the diagram next page)The first transparent box contains big shops, the second and the solid part of the facade contains small shops and the third part contains entertainment, cultural and cinema spaces.
18
For me Charsou is the most important project I have ever done in my professional career till now because it ‘s a public building and had been built and used for several years and I had been a member of the design team from A to Z for the first time in my career.

The interior concept shaped around a central void, we decide to make it a little dynamic by changing the geometry of void in each level. By this strategy of design, we made lots of new perspectives in the interior central void.

It was very important to choose an impressive material for the middle part of the volume, so we tried to make a new one. We select one of the famous Iranian motifs and distracted it from a metal sheet( in three different scales), then we fold the sheets in three different sizes, so we had nine types of patterns that we made a combination from them in the facade. To make a relation with inside and outside of the project, we chose to use the same material for cinema boxes, which were suspended in the project.

In the middle of a residential district with small plots, Soheil`s site is kind of vast. It is integrated of some urban blocks and also shapeless. Soheil is defined as a cultural-commercial center. Because of the location of this project, the design team decided to use the roof of the project as a park to give the neighborhood a giant green area in exchange for build a huge shopping center in the middle of their residential neighborhood. I had been chosen to design the park`s landscape which was my favorite part of this building.

Persian garden had some specific diagrams and system of design in Persian architecture history. For this project, I analyzed the Persian garden`s diagram and extract its main elements. Pathways, main and secondary ways, division in equal parts, water and particular sorts of trees are most important Persian garden`s qualities.

Farmanieh is a big complex in the middle of an old residential neighborhood. This commercial and entertainment center, because of the project location, is a high-level one. So we should have designed it as a luxurious commercial center. The form of the building came out of the weird shape of the plot, but we tried to make it smoother and more active in the main facade. Using the curve shapes became our main tool for designing different spaces. As you can see in the interior renders, we tried to make a general theme for all spaces.

Darbansar residential building locates in a mountainous area at the suburb of Tehran, near one of the main ski resort of Iran. There are villas and chalets around the neighborhood for people who ski in the winter. This new building is going to be a vacation house. We tried to combine the apartment type and the chalet type to make two kinds of space quality.

The site of this project locates in the middle of an official district of Tehran. For this plot, the position of the eastern neighbour, make the typical limits of buildings in Tehran a little different. This exception let us go further of our permitted borders.
The whole building designed for an advertising company. The design team divided the building into two parts to reach the limits of density and provide a middle open space in the between. We defined two main straps as open offices and for specific workspaces, which all the users need to reach, we designed suspended boxes in the middle space, connecting each other with open stairs. These boxes also contribute traces for the upper level which connect with the stairs too.

Mosha is a village near Tehran that is mountainous. My father has a land on the mountain with a great view to the dene. My parents wanted to build a little house for weekends and summer trips. The area and the budget had some limits. I designed this villa by locating tow L shape volumes providing a middle yard and a big trace that was one of the major demands of the clients. The concept of the project is to build a weekend house that is open when the people come inside and become to a solid volume when the residents left the house. The cold weather and security are the main reasons of this closure.

Renovation- Unit 184 Location: Kooh-e-Noor tower, Tehran, Iran Design Date: 2018 Construction Date: June -November 2018 Gross Floor Area: 300 sqm Position: Design Partner, Construction Supervisor Firm: Shaboffice Link:https://www.instagram.com/p/ByCFMYQjEyU/
RENOVATION 184 was done for a unit on the 18th floor of a residential tower in the north of Tehran. The unit has unobstructed views towards the mountains in the north and overlooks Farmanieh Street towards east. A full renovation took place as the unit was in a terrible shape and looked extremely dated. The apartment was gutted. Floors, ceilings, doors and door frames, cabinets, closets, toilets, etc were removed and subsequently redone. Electrical and mechanical upgrades were done. Furthermore, the kitchen was relocated to become the centerpiece and social heart of the apartment. The color palette in this project was limited to white and grey as per client’s specific request.

RENOVATION 193 was done for a unit on the 19th floor of a residential tower in the north of Tehran. The building was completed in the early 1990’s and therefore the unit looked aged and outdated. As per the client’s request, the aim was to keep the renovation cost at minimum by keeping and fixing as much in the apartment as possible. The plan was only adjusted to become more suited to the needs of the client. Bathrooms and the kitchen were fully done. 1 Kitchen
2 Kitchen
The kitchen is divided into a “functional” and a “social” part. The “functional” part of the kitchen is perceived as a box which can be fully closed or fully open or open to one side, according to clients’ needs.
