Update from Pasco County Commissioner Seth Weightman

I hope you all had a wonderful July and enjoyed the annual Avalon Park Wesley Chapel celebration for the 4th of July! As always, I’m grateful for the opportunity to provide these updates about what is happening in Pasco County.

On July 11th, the Pasco County Commission confirmed the hiring of a new fire chief, Tony Perez. I am looking forward to working with Chief Perez as he takes over Pasco Fire Rescue. I also want to thank outgoing Fire Chief Scott Cassin for his many years of service to our community.

Scallop season started on July 1st in Pasco County and ends on August 6th. It has been successful for both our residents and visitors for wonderful days out on the water. Thanks to the Experience Florida’s Sports Coast team for promoting scalloping season to bring visitors to spend their money in our community.

As the calendar turns to August, families are getting ready to send kids back to school. Please make sure you are aware of the Florida sales tax holiday for school supplies runs from July 24th to August 6th. This year, the Legislature has also set a school tax holiday from January 1st to 14th, 2024. Please check out the Florida Department of Revenue’s website for all the details and qualifying items at https://floridarevenue.com/backtoschool

On August 8th, the Pasco County Commission will have another discussion on how to bring and keep quality value homes to Pasco County. These policies are incredibly important and set a path for the future of our community. We will also begin to work on our legislative priorities for the coming year. I’ll discuss these more in coming issues, including an important policy change we will push to help protect our job creating sites.

Thank you again for taking the time to read these updates. Remember, you can always catch up on the latest happenings on the Pasco County website at MyPasco.net.
