E3: Explore, Experience, Engage

Through a series of activities, the department aims to engage students to be more passionate about the Humanities and to understand the world and society better.

1. Learning Journeys and Competitions

Students visited different places around Singapore such as MacRitchie Reservoir, Jewel at Changi Airport, Singapore River and the Pang Sua Pond in Bukit Panjang to apply the skills and knowledge they have learnt in the classroom. For example, all secondary One students went on a Humanities-Mathematics Learning trail at Marina Barrage. Using ICT while exploring, students worked in groups to answer questions related to the barrage. Students also had the opportunity to conduct water testing on the water there. They also took part in a number of competitions to challenge their knowledge and understanding of concepts taught in Humanities.

2. Humanities Week

Students were engaged in numerous activities during the week to allow them to learn humanities in a fun and exciting way. These included a Paper Wars game, current affairs reading and fun quizzes. Students’ projects were also displayed in the canteen. “I think it is interesting and educational because we got to learn new facts in the form of a game,” says Sung Jernin (4E3).

3. Learning with ICT and Games

ICT is an integral part of learning for the Humanities Department. In secondary 1, learnt about Singapore’s history using Minecraft. Secondary 2 students tried coding using micro:bit. Upper secondary students also had the opportunity to learn using specially-created board games that enhanced their Humanities knowledge.
