What do you hope to inculcate in your students?

What we teachers consider to be the smallest things may carry great significance and inspiration for our students. I hope to be able to increase my students’ world view; there are so many things they have yet to be exposed to! Whether it be through lessons, enrichment programmes, or during daily opportunities to interact informally, I hope to show my students the wider world and its possibilities. I have done this by discussing the credibility of the advertisements plastered in front of enrichment centres, bringing my choir students out to watch an opera, and sharing a scone during recess time with students who had never tried one before. Hopefully through these new experiences, they will find something interesting to pursue further!

What does winning the award mean to you?

The PAT represents an affirmation of the work that educators do daily. am merely one of the privileged few to receive the award! Still, hope to be able to inspire and encourage other educators, and continue to be a positive influencer and advocate for the teaching profession. With my fellow educators, will continue to do my best to provide the best possible education, instil the right values, and spur students on to excel!

Ms Ng Sheh Feng

Ms Ng Sheh Feng believes that as an educator, she has the ability to contribute and make improvements. And that is what she did. In AI, she started the Alumni networking sessions to re-connect with Alumni for the purpose of engaging them in the development of the students. She also worked very closely with the parents from the Parent Support Group to create opportunities for parents to play an active role in their child’s education and development. She started the Enhanced Music Programme in AI, and developed a vibrant curriculum to enable more students to develop their talents through enrichment opportunities, collaborate with musicians, and experience the music industry. She successfully advocated for 2 visually-impaired students to take the GCE O-Level examination – a first in Singapore. In the music fraternity, she is also actively involved as a Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the Arts (STAR) Champion for cluster schools, and runs music workshops for music teachers in the North Zone. She is recognised as a dynamic, innovative and well-respected educator in the fraternity.

Mr Yao Zijian

Mr Yao Zijian is a firm believer in the importance of character development of students, and it is clearly evident in how he constantly seeks ways and opportunities to inculcate character development in whatever capacities he is in. As an Assistant Year Head, he works closely with the level form teachers to support them in pastoral care and Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) guidance, ensuring the well-being of the students. Together with the Physical Education (PE) team, he conceptualised and implemented the school’s Learning for Life Programme (LLP), Character Development through Outdoor Learning Experience (OLE) that promotes resilience and teamwork. To challenge and inspire students to their full potential, Mr Yao introduced new programmes such as the Outdoor Educational Leadership Elective Module and OLE Leaders Annual trip to Hong Kong. Well-respected teacher by all his students, he is indeed deserving of the AI Outstanding Teacher Award.
