AFTER-SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT (ASE)

Looking for a place to chill or play games after school?

AI After-school Recreational Centre (AI ARC) is a safe haven for our students to play games and build meaningful relationships with their peers. The name of this room came about after a round of voting among staff and students. Before this, a list of names were shortlisted from many names that were suggested by members of the school. Thanks to the guidance from Ms Chew, our Principal and Mr Teo, our HOD (Discipline), the round of voting led us to the name, AI ARC.

Apart from having activities, a group of students are identified as the ASE Leaders to develop their leadership skills through the Leaders’ Programme. With the guidance of teachers and SHINE Children and Youth Services, they oversaw the general running of the drop-in sessions and themed mass events. At this year’s Achievement Day, our student leaders even put up a drone performance after going through many trainings sessions guided by our former student Mr Sallihin. Do come and join us after school to chill and play games.

TOUCHING LIVES • STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS • REALISING DREAMS

The school believes in providing a conducive environment for students to achieve their goals and fulfil their potential. Through positive teacher-student relationships, we will be able to play a more significant role in helping the students realise their dreams. As such, the team aims to provide the platforms and avenues for teachers and students to build these positive relationships.

Laughter bustling from among students and teachers, conversations in between mouthfuls of delightful food and a resident teh-tarik master. This is not a description of your typical kopitiam but a scene from our classroom during Breakfast with FTs.

This is just one of the many ways AI students and teachers bond to strengthen relationships. In AI, teachers and students sit in circles sharing stories and experiences; students pour their hearts out through writing in journals; teachers engage students in meaningful heart-to-heart conversations. We believe that a positive teacher-student relationship has a significant and long-lasting impact on the students’ lives, and can inspire them to pursue and realise their dreams.

Understanding that the needs of our students differ as they go through their secondary school years, we design and organise customised programmes to cater to these various needs. Developing a positive self-concept in our young Secondary 1 students, Strengths Explorer is introduced to them during their Secondary 1 Orientation Programme. Through this profiling tool, students understand their strengths and learn how to leverage on them when collaborating with others. Study skills are reinforced at the various levels as students prepare for their examinations while motivational workshops are put in during their last lap as they gear up towards the National Examinations. Students learn to negotiate with others and organise their own tasks and time, among others, during Social Skills lessons that help them learn important self, relationship and study management tools. We hope that our students are able to face the world with confidence and care for others.

It takes a village to raise a child. We cannot do without the support of our parents, school counsellors and external partners such as SHINE Youth & Children Services and Youth Guidance Outreach Services (YGOS) where we place the best interests of the child at heart. Regular communication between these parties through Parent-Teacher Meetings and Student Development Meetings allows us to understand the needs of the child and intervene where necessary. In the process, hearts are touched and lives are changed.
