Art Unit
Assumption English School’s Visual Arts programme inculcates Visual Literacy and Art Appreciation through a synergy of Project-based Learning Framework and Art Inquiry Model. It consists of both studio practices as well as discourse relating to all things art. This provides opportunities for deep conversation and encourages critical thinking for the students with the hope of igniting their curiosity and passion to pursue and take art beyond academics into their daily lives.
Students are encouraged to participate in external art activities and competitions, and many can showcase their talents in various school-based exhibitions and projects. Students are often enlisted to help design posters and create artworks for various purposes. The students are able to find space for the discovery of joy and have fun while seeing their ideas come to life.
NFS Unit
With the full implementation of common curriculum at Lower Secondary and new syllabus Nutrition and Food Science for the Upper Secondary, the unit re-focused its teaching and learning resources to align with an emphasis on healthy eating and nutrition through My Healthy Plate as well as sustainability in food.
Students experienced making healthy food choices through their Applied Module, where they had to make justifications on the choice of dishes prepared for their practical assessment with My Healthy Plate. The Secondary Two level was explicitly introduced to the topic on food sustainability with e-Pedagogy and the SLS platform. The students also produced a short presentation on the effects of food wastage and ways to avoid food wastage.
D&T Unit
The D&T Unit aims to make learning fun, develop students’ thinking skills, and nurture creativity. D&T is focused on students’ expression of their thoughts, building confidence, and challenging them to be more vocal and reflective.
Focus is made in areas of design communication, research, ideation and development, and decision-making. They are trained to continuously be critical of their work and seek better alternatives where possible, frequently reviewing and evaluating their decisions throughout the design process.
Joy of Learning Mathematics at Assumption English School
In AES, we believe that the Mathematics curriculum must excite students’ interest, provide appropriate motivations and be sufficiently stimulating and challenging. All students can and should be motivated to succeed in Mathematics.
Using the three phases of learning Mathematics, we motivated our students by providing motivating contexts in the readiness phase and using an activity-based learning approach in the engagement phase.
For Secondary 1 students, the highlight activity of the year is the Kite Design and Flying Task. They made use of Mathematical concepts like angles, shapes and area, as well as Physics concepts like drag and thrust to design a kite which they tested to see which kite stayed up for the longest time.
