Creatives. You see yourself as an artist when you wake up every day. You teach people how to dream and how to see the world without limits. Through your vision, you show possibilities. As we continue on our journey, we invite you to throw out blandness, toss away ordinary, and remove mediocrity. Have the courage to take a different path because creativity is the greatest form of rebellion. Ignore all the rules and conditions and make new ones. A fellow creative once said: “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” -Albert Einstein So have fun... but take your dream seriously, because we do. -AvantPhoto Team

Describe your photographic style? My photographic style focuses primarily around lighting. I never like to be at the mercy of the weather or the sun, so I choose to light all of my images whether I’m on location or in a studio. This leads to images with punchy colors (though I desaturate a lot!) and sharp contrast that allows my subjects to stand out. How did you develop it? Photography is an art, your preferences will change over time and the work you produce will follow. I developed my current style by toying with lights in studio, and then bringing them outside and really just playing with my light and seeing what I could do. A strong fundamental understanding of light and exposure is necessary for my photographic style, and I always check out www.fashiongonerogue.com for inspiration and to see what the industry leaders are doing. From there I choose which images and styles I like and see how I can recreate similar images.

What is the most challenging part about being a photographer for you? It almost seems like you need god-like abilities to be a great photographer these days. Many of us struggle with at least one aspect of photography, either being the creative, technical, business, or financial. You have to keep up with advancing technologies, artistic trends, social media engagement, client invoicing and marketing, client discovery, and many other duties. At the same time, lots have to balance having a day job, paying off student loans, and spending time with the family, all while consistently trying to come up with these new ideas and concepts. It’s sometimes a frustrating and seemingly impossible task. But I guess in that way, the best quality a photographer can have is perseverance. What characteristics or abilities do you think it takes to be a great photographer? As I mentioned in the question related to challenges of being a photographer, having perseverance is probably the best quality to growing and learning as a photographer. Artists get rejected, ignored, and sometimes lambasted every day, but we need to persevere and keep trying until we find what works.

What first drew you into starting photography? I wanted to make my kind of image with my kind of values. I was always fascinated with the duality of fashion photography as both a fine and commercial art object. Yes, it is selling something, but the way it sells is by tapping into something much bigger then just a product image. I really desire to make a soulful fashion image, not just because I love beautiful clothes and making beautiful things, but because the image is so ubiquitous I see it as an avenue to put something meaningful in the daily lives of people. Who are you favorite photographers and how have they influenced you? I feel like that always changes, but consistently: Ryan McGinley, Cindy Sherman and Inez and Vindooh. Ryan Mcginley for his ability to capture these beautiful liminal moments, really they are nonmoments, they shouldn’t be beautiful but they are. Cindy Sherman for her embodiment of character and use of herself as a vessel to communicate a story. Inez and Vindooh for their striking creativity and unabashed sense of style.
