DISCOVER the legacy of the Armstrong empire in the Armstrong & Aviation Artefacts Museum. A fascinating collection from two world wars showing some of the achievements of this brilliant inventor and industrialist. EXPERIENCE the sights, stories and atmosphere of over 1600 years of breathtaking history. This huge whinstone crop forced upwards by volcanic activity has witnessed a succession of crowns. From wooden pallisades to the present stone built fortress, the castle has kept watch over the coastline 150 feet below for many centuries. These formidable stone walls have witnessed dark tales of rebellion, bloody battles, spellbinding legends, millionaire benefactors and ghosts who love this building so much they will never leave.

600s The Beast of Bamburgh, a tiny solid gold plaque, signifies the castle’s status as home of the kings of Northumbria.

610-700 Bamburgh, the royal city, is chronicled as “The very foundation stone of England.”

993 The Vikings strike and ransack Bamburgh, seizing booty and burning buildings. The castle falls into disrepair.

1066 Ruling Anglo Saxons are ousted by Normans who use the castle as a base during forays into Scotland.

1131 Bamburgh becomes great again as the castle is rebuilt and fortified against attack as the Crown’s strategic English outpost.
