om and Mona Jones live in a sophisticated, modern retreat tucked away on two acres. The couple positioned their home deep among the trees of Fayetteville’s Mt. Sequoyah. Glass walls, clean lines, expensive detailing – the hallmarks of a modern, upscale classic are all present in this stylish residence. Built in the shape of a U, the home has distinct public and private sides. Terraced down a slope, the front of the home boasts massive board-formed concrete walls that grow out of the earth like the native stone boulders that were excavated from the site. In contrast, the back of the home is all glass – blurring the lines between indoors and out as the home opens up to the woods. The Joneses’ house is characterized by a strong connection to the outdoors.
When they found the pristine property, they enlisted Rich Brya and Porter Winston of 3GD Inc., an architecture and construction firm in Rogers. This is the third project the Joneses have hired 3GD’s founders to help with. The exterior is paneled with concrete, red mahogany, aluminum and glass. Porter says, “We used basic materials that were distilled down to their natural state like unpainted concrete and unstained red mahogany.” Every inch of the 4,500-square-foot home was carefully planned, and by judiciously restricting the color palette and choice of materials, the Joneses made certain that nothing looks cramped or fussy. In the 20 ft. entry a floating stairway leads to the second floor, where one finds a guest bedroom and bath. The cantilevered steel stairs have wooden treads and a custom cable rail from Razorback Ironworks. The trees that had to be cut down in the building process were used to create the stair treads and a bar in the kitchen. March 2008 • CitiScapes Metro Monthly | 61

The furniture in this three bedroom, three and a half bath home is also spare and simple. A yellow and gray sectional centered by a square glass coffee table, anchors the living room. This room is more than just part of the home; it’s an escape into the densely surrounding woods. And a clear Philippe Starck table and swivel chairs from Lacuna sit in the corner near the expansive windows so as not to obstruct the gorgeous view out back. The living room’s dÊcor, cabinetry and entertainment system is hung on metal Mockett shelving against plastic Chilewich wallpaper. And just off the living room is a wine and coffee bar – a must-have for Tom, a gourmet coffee aficionado. Another must-have for Tom is his home office. As a teleradiologist, Tom works from home. His office features a gray love seat that was reupholstered by Belton Interiors in Rogers. Because he’s one of the most technologically savvy people we’ve met, it’s no surprise he installed a Creston wireless network from A/V Design Consultants in Fayetteville. Tom and Mona agree that without the help of Paul Crawford of A/V Design, their home wouldn’t be the same.

The Joneses’ home is a Smart House where everything from the heat/air, alarm system, lights, TV and iPod function by a single remote. With A/V Design’s Crestron system they can even track the usage of their lights. And in the master bedroom, the Crestron controls the shades that rise up from the bottom. The Joneses needed to tame the warm sunlight that pours in through all the windows to ensure privacy and a good night’s sleep.

The master bathroom is equally as glowing and gorgeous as the bedroom. The Joneses chose a backsplash of gray and white tiles placed in a Zen weave with a white glass countertop and vessel sinks. After seeing the beautiful details in this home and its close connection to nature, we were not at all surprised to learn that Mona teaches yoga at the Arkansas Yoga Center. Tom and Mona feel they hired the best team to complete their dream home. Along with 3GD Inc. and A/V Design, they enlisted help from interior designer Andrea Cornwell of iSpace, and landscape architect Greg Bland. Mona says, “We all sat down together and worked to cut down the fewest number of trees, design a home to fit the lot, and find designs that were meaningful to us. When a group of people who are passionate about what they do come together, you simply end up with a better world. Everyone was committed to this project for two years, so they all feel a sense of ownership in this house.” While most of the home has concrete floors (with radiant heating), the kitchen floors are a dark stained oak. With gray granite countertops, custom mahogany cabinets and high-end stainless steel appliances, the luminous kitchen has an ideal layout perfect for entertaining. If there’s a ray of sunshine, it comes in the glass walls that line the kitchen. Both the kitchen and dining spaces open to the patio and are only separated from the hillside outdoors by a commercial glass wall from Abram’s Glass in Springdale. This central space joins the living room and its upstairs guest suite with the master bedroom suite. The dining room centers around a gorgeous chandelier. London based designer Jeremy Cole’s handcrafted chandelier boasts porcelain leaves that are geometrically arranged around the light bulbs. The red mahogany wall panels and cabinets were custom made by 3GD for the Jones home. Wayne Fisher, owner of Classic Interiors, crafted the exquisite finishes throughout the home. Mona says the project wouldn’t have been complete without Wayne’s expertise in staining and painting. Mahogany is used on the outside of the home too, however, it remains in its natural state with no staining. There’s not a stitch of molding throughout the Jones home; instead the couple used a small strip of aluminum where the wall meets the floor to define the edge. Their home is uniquely different and that’s exactly what they wanted – to create a personal retreat, a place to recharge. Because the Joneses know that modern is not only a style; it’s a lifestyle. And like Northwest Arkansas, modern is relaxed, it is dramatic, and it is beautiful. ■
