Legal English Dinsdag 3 september 2013 | 12:00 – 14:15 uur According to less conservative estimates, almost 1 billion people worldwide use English, and most of these are not native speakers. It's only natural then that when legal practice turned international, English became its lingua franca. And that's unfortunate, because legal English is a very tricky variety of English, so much more so than the English of entertainment, or technology, or medicine. The aim of this Legal English webinar is to introduce you, Dutch-speaking legal practitioners, to the potential problems of using English to communicate about Dutch law. Some of the questions we'll be asking ourselves: What is a lawyer? How supreme is a supreme court? And what are the risks of trying to draft contracts in English? The focus of this webinar is on procedure and private law, but participants are more than welcome to call in with questions about criminal or administrative law.

Webinar Legal English Tony Foster was born in Brisbane, Australia, in 1966. After secondary school he studied English (specializing in Historical Linguistics and Medieval Literature) and Dutch Law (specializing in Comparative Private Law). Foster has been employed by the University of Leiden since 1990, teaching English Language, Legal English and Applied Linguistics at the Leiden University Language Centre (until 2002) and the Department of English. He has also worked as an in-house translator and interpreter. In addition, he teaches the Legal Translation (Dutch/English) and Comparative Criminal Law courses for the Stichting Instituut voor Gerechtstolken en – Vertalers (SIGV). His research interests are comparative law, legal lexicography, and the teaching of Legal English.
