They think we do BAD THINGS but we do them very well

EDITOR’S LETTER When I was asked by Etienne van Bladel some time ago, whether I wanted to participate in the interview series Top Lawyer meets Sports Star - as a sports enthusiast - I did not have to think very long. The decision was even easier, when I learned that it concerned the 2016 Olympic gold winners of my beloved sport: Field hockey. Kate en Helen Richardson–Walsh, both field hockey players of the Great Britain national team and currently playing in the Dutch competition for HC Bloemendaal. It was also clear from the beginning that I would ask my associate Roderick Beudeker – who still is active on the hockey field – to join me. Under the professional guidance of Wouter Kurpershoek, we spoke about our background, choices in life, successes and disappointments. Loving sports –in this specific case field hockeyis a passion for Kate and Helen and to become a Olympic gold medallist required them years of

training, discipline, courage, sacrifice, resistance and perseverance. Although I was already vaguely aware of it, it was again striking to identify so many parallels between the sports world and the way business organisations operate. It has been a pleasure to meet and talk with Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh. It was “gezellig”, as we say in Dutch. During our relatively short talk, I got to know both Kate and Helen as true motivational and inspirational sportswomen. I have an awful lot of respect of what they have accomplished and I am very honoured that I was allowed to brief touch the 2016 Olympic gold medals. Congratulations still! Well deserved. I want to thank Etienne van Bladel for making this happen and wish you lots of pleasure watching and reading this new edition of Top Lawyer(s) meet(s) Sports Star(s).

KATE RICHARDSON-WELSH

L

A highly motivated Olympic gold and bronze medallist, quadruple Olympian and Great Britain Hockey Captain with 375 appearances for England and Great Britain who is widely respected as both a World Class player and a talented and inspirational leader. The challenges of combining international level sport with a successful career have developed many valuable transferable qualities and skills, which benefit both the sporting and business environments. These include the ability to perform in high-pressure situations, excellent individual and team leadership, effective communication, planning, organisation and evaluation skills. Underpinning all of this is a strong determination and focus, a highly professional approach and many very likeable character traits. Having completed a Batchelor of Science Honours Degree in 2003 at Brunel University, the balance of international training and career development was the goal. Short periods of part-time work and work experience across a number of business departments and sectors enabled international representation to be the priority. Playing a team sport, captaining the national hockey team for 13 years and working as part of larger business teams fostered a deep respect and understanding of team culture and high performing teams. As international retirement from hockey came after winning Gold at the Rio Olympics, attention has been turned to the sport-business cross over and working to develop teams across a range of sectors. Alongside Helen Richardson-Walsh they became the first same-sex married couple to compete at the Olympic Games and win a Gold medal in Rio 2016.

HELEN RICHARDSON-WELSH

M

idfield maestro, Helen is one of the most experienced members of the Great Britain team. Having started her international career in 1999 at the age of 17, she became the youngest ever woman to represent GB hockey at an Olympics in Sydney the following year, and has gone on to compete at four Olympic Games. As part of the senior leadership group she played a central role in propelling the women’s game to victory on the world stage in Rio 2016. As she stepped on to the podium alongside her teammate and wife, GB captain Kate Richardson-Walsh, they also entered Olympic history as the first same sex married couple to win an Olympic medal playing for the same team. Over the course of her 17 year international career, Helen has amassed 19 medals including an Olympic bronze at London 2012, the European Championship title in 2015, World Cup bronze in 2010 and Commonwealth silver in 2002, before finally reaching the pinnacle of her sport as part of the celebrated GB hockey team that beat the Netherlands in the Olympic Final in Rio. Helen was one of only two players to score during a tense penalty shootout and is recognised at world level as one of the best in the business – shortlisted for the World Player of the Year Award and named in the FIH World All Stars Team three times.
