What Are Humanities and Liberal Arts?
Catholic universities are committed to searching for truth and discovering it through the unity of God and creation. At Ave Maria University, this unity of faith and reason shapes our major and minor programs in humanities and traditional liberal arts. You learn how to think, not what to think. These courses will enrich your sense of wonder and present cultural topics in a way that complements your faith, instead of contrasting it.
Through the study of classics, literature, humanities, music, philosophy, politics, and theology, you will experience a renewal of self through the guidance of our excellent faculty.
Interested in Law School?
Ave Maria University offers a pre-law program for guidance on applying to law schools and exploring careers.
AMU has a close relationship with the Ave Maria School of Law (AMSOL) in Naples, Florida. The University and AMSOL have established a standing agreement and “3-3” partnership, making it possible for students to complete a degree from both AMU and AMSOL in six years instead of seven. AMU students can receive a full-ride to AMSOL if they score well on the LSAT and maintain a certain gradepoint average.
MAJOR Classics and Early Christian Literature
The study of Greek and Latin literature has been explored by some of the greatest minds in history for over two thousand years. To continue this tradition, Ave Maria University offers a major in classics and early Christian literature in Latin and Greek.
As a classics major, you will discover the deep presence and transformative culture of the Christian era, through the integration of Greek and Roman civilizations and a vast collection of biblical, patristic, and medieval writings.
• Nationally, classics majors average the second highest LSAT score and the highest success rate in law school of any other major.
• Classics majors consistently have one of the highest average GRE scores.
• According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, classics majors and double majors have a better chance of admission into medical school than science majors.

Theology
MAJOR AND MINOR
Ave Maria University’s theology program assists students in strengthening their relationship with God. Through natural revelation, God manifests Himself in creation. This superhuman revelation is transmitted to us through Sacred Scripture, the living tradition of the Church, and the authentic Magisterium.
As a theology student at AMU, you will carefully investigate God as revealed through our Catholic faith. Theology is consistently one of the most popular programs at the University and is made up of top Catholic faculty and scholars. Ave Maria theology students also have the unique opportunity to obtain both their bachelor’s and master’s in theology over just five years through our 4+1 program.
• AMU is one of only two schools on the Newman Guide with a Ph.D. in theology.
• Theology is one of the most popular majors at AMU.
• All members of the theology faculty take the Oath of Fidelity and possess the Mandatum required by Ex Corde Ecclesiae.
• Students majoring in theology can earn their master’s degree in just one additional year.
• The theology major is designed to be accessible to students as a double major, to help students strengthen their relationship with God through the program.
