Mayor Buddy Dyer Hosted 14th Annual Neighborhood & Community Summit
On March 4th 2019 Mayor Buddy Dyer joined close to 350 Orlando residents for the 14th Annual Neighborhood & Community Summit.
At the event, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer presented for the first time, the Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award as well as the annual Neighborhood Champion Award and Community Builder Award. These awards are presented once a year by the Mayor to volunteers and organizations who excel in building better neighborhoods and strengthening the local community.
“It is important to honor and recognize the individuals and organizations that give tirelessly of their time, talent and resources to improve the quality of life for all our residents,” said Mayor Dyer. “These men and women embody what it means to be a good neighbor and make the Orlando community a better place for all of us.”
The Diversity and Inclusion Champion award was presented to the Interfaith Council of Central Florida. The mission of the Interfaith Council of Central Florida is to create a better, more peaceful, more harmonious community by encouraging and facilitating greater interest in, understanding of, respect for and cooperation among the region’s many faith traditions. Through education and interaction the council seeks to dismantle all barriers and believes that every human has innate value and deserves to be treated justly and with dignity and respect.
The Neighborhood Champion award was presented Genie Tuten from the Wadeview Park Neighborhood Association. For more than 12 years, Genie has served as either a board member or president of her association. Through that time she has hosted events, opened her home to her neighbors and kept her community connected by writing and publishing a monthly newsletter. Genie has also been instrumental in the creation of the Randall R. Tuten Orlando Fire Museum, volunteering her time, conducting tours and making an impact on the thousands of people who have toured the museum.
The Community Builder award was given to the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County for their work serving local families and ensuring the future academic success for the children of this community. Since 2000, the Early Learning Coalition has worked to ensure all Orange County children enter school ready to learn and funds more than 27,000 children annually in 750 small child care provider businesses in Orange County, reaching 32,400 children in Orange County last year.
“I look forward to this event every year and I would like to thank everyone who participated in the annual Neighborhood and Community Summit,” said Mayor Dyer. “The Summit allows us the chance to update residents on the latest best practices and equip them with the resources they need to ensure Orlando remains the best city in America to live, work and play.”
Harris Rosen Donates 12 Million to Brain Tumor Research Many are Thankful for His Generosity The University of Florida has received a $12 million gift from Orlando hotel magnate Harris Rosen and The Harris Rosen Foundation to advance innovative brain tumor immunotherapy research and care at UF Health and to launch an unprecedented partnership for the development of novel brain tumor treatments.
The Rosen gift is the cornerstone of a $100 million fundraising commitment to support the ReMission Alliance Against Brain Tumors, a groundbreaking, collaborative initiative led by UF that will unite world-leading neurooncology physicians and scientists in dynamic research and clinical trials.
The gift was announced Friday, Feb. 22, before the inaugural ReMission Summit for Brain Tumors at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando. The UF-organized Summit brings together more than 100 experts in neurooncology, tumor immunology, genetics, artificial intelligence, neuroimaging and bioinformatics to form an elite research community focused on achieving transformative outcomes for patients with brain tumors over the next decade. The ReMission Summit also serves as the public forum for the debut of the ReMission Alliance, a multiinstitutional research collaborative focused on the advancement of novel immunotherapies for adult and pediatric brain cancer.
“I am extremely grateful that Harris Rosen and his family share our vision to make a transformative impact on outcomes for patients with brain tumors,” said Duane Mitchell, M.D., Ph.D., co-director of UF’s Preston A. Wells Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy and director of the ReMission Alliance. “Their support of our research, patient care initiatives and the ReMission Alliance will allow us to leverage the power of the immune system to combat invasive brain cancers to dramatically improve the lives of brain tumor patients, here at UF and abroad.”
The ReMission Alliance’s work builds on the success and growth of UF’s Preston A. Wells Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy and collaborative research partnerships fostered over several years by Mitchell and his colleagues. Over the past five years, the center has undergone dramatic growth and established itself as a leader for brain tumor treatment and research. Along with William Friedman, M.D., co-director of the Preston A. Wells Jr. Center, Mitchell and his team will support several bold research projects and clinical trials coordinated with principal partners from among the world’s best research institutes and hospitals.
“Thanks to the generosity and support of Harris Rosen and his family, we are able to pursue research breakthroughs that result in real change,” UF President Kent Fuchs said. “I am confident that, together, we can advance the work necessary to provide extraordinary outcomes for patients suffering from malignant brain tumors and improve their survival rates and quality of life. The ReMission Alliance embodies UF’s commitment to the greater good.”
This work — to organize multidisciplinary, collaborative research efforts among groups of skilled researchers and physicians — resonated deeply with Harris Rosen. His son, Adam, who received care at UF Health, died in November after a prolonged fight with brain cancer. Harris was impressed by the UF Health clinical team’s professionalism, skill and commitment to making Adam and his family as comfortable as possible.
BERLUTI AND FERRARI: AN HOMAGE TO EXCELLENCE Maranello’s collaboration with Berluti has produced the Ferrari Limited Edition footwear collection designed specifically for gentlemen drivers and inspired by the Prancing Horse’s latest models, the Ferrari Monza SP1 and Monza SP2. Every detail and styling element of this exclusive collection – including its sculptural, sinuous shapes and stitching – references the iconic Ferraris, their instantly recongisable exterior styling and exquisite interiors.
To further underscore the link to the Prancing Horse, all three models – a Slip-on, an Oxford and a Chelsea Boot – have the same red piping detail on their heels. When it came to designing and developing the soles used in the collection, Ferrari drew on its wealth of experience with innovative technologies, choosing to craft them in Twill 2×2 carbonfibre which is not only used in its cars, but also makes for ultra-comfortable driving in particular.
The Ferrari Limited Edition collection was unveiled by Ferrari Chairman John Elkann and Berluti CEO Antoine Arnault at a cocktail party in the brand’s boutique on Paris’s Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré to celebrate both Fashion Week and the Mondial Paris Motor Show. Designed by Berluti and Ferrari, the collection will be available from the start of November in select Berluti boutiques internationally.

Little Known Theme Park Experiences 1.
Get a Haircut at Disney
Visit Magic Kingdom's Harmony Barber Shop on Main Street, USA for a once-in-a-lifetime trim or even a whole new look. Welcoming all ages, the shop also offers a special First Haircut experience for little ones, complete with commemorative Mickey Ears and a certificate. 2.
Grab a Cold One with the Simpsons
Grab a glass of Homer Simpson's favorite beverage, with three varieties of Duff Beer available only at Universal Studios. Despite the running joke on the show that all three are the same beer, the real-life versions include Duff (a lager), Duff Lite (a light beer), and Duff Dry (a stout). 3.
Become Your Very Own AVATAR
Create a personalized AVATAR as the ultimate souvenir at Disney's Pandora: The World of AVATAR at Animal Kingdom. Guests can have their faces mapped and printed onto a Na'vi action figure, complete with blue skin and traditional garb, just like the aliens in the film. 4.
Pet (and Feed!) Sting Rays
While the popular marine mammals like dolphins and sea lions may be more well-known, one of the most unusual animal encounters is feeding and touching the stingrays at SeaWorld Orlando. Guests of all ages - even tiny tots - can dip their hands directly into the pool, feel the velvety texture of the rays, and delight as the gentle creatures suck fish from their hands at lightning fast speed. (Don't worry, the stingray barbs are trimmed, just like human fingernails.) 5.
Perform "Real" Magic
Spell it out with the wave of a wand at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort. Objects suddenly move, water spouts and secrets reveal themselves throughout Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade when visitors use one of the Interactive Wands available at Ollivander's Wand Shop. 6.
Meet The Pets That Went from Shelters to Stars
Many people don't know that SeaWorld also provides a home and second chance at life for dogs and cats rescued from animal shelters. Considered by many to be untrainable due to their high energy, these adopted animals now steal the stage and fans' hearts - as stars in the parks' Pets Ahoy, a funny, fast-paced animal training show that also imparts a meaningful message to support local animal shelters. The cast of talented rescued animals includes dogs, cats and even ducks, and guests can personally meet some of these amazing "animal ambassadors" along with their trainers after the show. 7.
Dine with Princesses in Epcot, Too
Join Disney princesses for Storybook Dining at the Norway pavilion of Epcot's World Showcase. While many visitors flock to Magic Kingdom's Cinderella Castle for princess dining, this lesser-known option includes a meal with several of the mostloved princesses in another, equally beautiful medieval castle. 8.
Send A Letter from Hogsmeade
Send a real letter from Hogsmeade's Owl Post at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort. Special postage, a Hogsmeade postmark and even unique wizardly stationary makes for a one-of-a-kind love letter, pen pal or postcard. 9.
Make Friends with Rescued Manatees
Step behind-the-scenes and catch a glimpse of SeaWorld Orlando's working manatee rescue and rehabilitation facility to learn more about the plight of these vulnerable animals that have been rescued from illness or injury in the wild. Guests can get a closer look at some of the water's most gentle creatures - including calves, "teens" and adult manatees - all of which have been rescued and are undergoing treatment with the goal of successfully returning them back to the wild.
10. Play I-Spy with Mickey Embark on a scavenger hunt for hidden mickeys, a famous "secret" of the Disney Parks. Everything from rides to dĂŠcor and even walking paths at Disney properties feature subtle Mickey shapes, some easier to spot than others. While books have been published to help guests find them all, half the fun is in the discovery.
