Both mother and son write with great verve, revealing a complex and intimate parent-child relationship.

Adam Sisman (ed.) More Dashing: Further Letters of Patrick Leigh Fermor £30.00 Our famous former neighbour, and regular customer, Patrick Leigh Fermor was a man of exceptional wit and insight. His letters brim with warmth and exuberance and feature countless fascinating glimpses of twentieth-century figures, ranging from Jackie Onassis and Oswald Mosely to Camilla Parker-Bowles and Peter Mandelson.

Diarmaid MacCulloch Thomas Cromwell: A Life £30.00 One of British history’s most notorious and elusive figures, Thomas Cromwell rose to power during a period of unprecedented upheaval, yet his exact role in this has been difficult to define. In this masterful new biography, MacCulloch uncovers new connections, providing the most persuasive and complete portrayal of Cromwell yet.

Adam Zomoyski Napoleon: The Man Behind the Myth £30.00 Elegant, incisive, and revealing, this new landmark biography is the first written in English to return to original-language European sources. Zomoyski presents Napoleon Bonaparte as neither god-like genius nor megalomaniac villain, but as a man, and seeks only to understand the conditions that led to his extraordinary trajectory.

Andrew Roberts Churchill: Walking with Destiny £35.00 Over 1000 biographies later, Winston Churchill continues to fascinate contemporary readers. This latest addition to his legend promises to be the most intimate and revealing yet: Roberts draws on over 40 new sources, including the diaries of King George VI, to produce a portrait of Churchill which is fresh and unexpected.

Anna Beer Patriot or Traitor: The Life of Sir Walter Ralegh £18.99 Sir Walter Ralegh is a man steeped in myth, but the reality of his life is stranger even than fiction: poet, soldier, courtier, and spy, he was a central figure throughout the Elizabethan age. In her scholarly, eloquent prose, Beer expertly captures the dichotomies which define him.

Kamal Ahmed The Life and Times of a Very British Man £16.99 The son of a Sudanese scientist and a grammar school-educated Yorkshire woman, BBC News economics editor Ahmed grew up in 1970s London. In this witty and humane memoir, Ahmed tells the story of his own coming-of-age and makes the case for a new conversation about race, Britishness, and belonging.

Angela Steidele Gentleman Jack: A Biography of Anne Lister, Regency Landowner, Seducer, and Secret Diarist £16.99 Anne Lister was a radical figure of the Regency period: a proud lesbian, she chose to remain unmarried, travelled the world, and slept with a pistol under her pillow. Steidele’s ground-breaking book sheds new light on this cult historical figure.

Adrian Dangar Life on the Edge: Tristan Voorspuy’s Fatal Love of Africa A £20.00

Life on the Edge

From the Foreword by Robin Hanbury-Tenison:

‘TristanVoorspuy was one of a kind. A charismatic, towering figure, he cut a swathe through society, the British Army and, above all, East Africa...’

ADRIAN DANGAR

DRIAN DANGAR first met Tristan Voorspuy thirty years ago, and with his help later established Wild & Exotic, a travel company specialising in riding safaris and tailor-made journeys around the world. He has travelled extensively throughout Africa, South America and Asia on numerous writing and travel assignments, and is a regular contributor to Country Life, The Field and Horse & Hound. His first book, True to the Line, a memoir of his career as a huntsman and Master of Foxhounds, was published by Quiller in 2017. Adrian lives in rural North Yorkshire with his wife and family and enjoys field sports, travel and the countryside.

Tristan Voorspuy’s adventurous life was tragically cut short as he attempted to defend the Kenyan ranch that he had loved and transformed into a celebrated game reserve. Heywood Hill will donate a portion of profits made from the sale of this book to the Voorspuy Conservation Trust set up in his memory. ADRIAN DANGAR

Life on the Edge O nce described by Joanna Lumley as “the man with no fear”, Tristan Voorspuy spent his life living up to the legend. From his epic Cairo to Cape Town motorbike ride, to extraordinary wildlife encounters and many death-defying light aircraft near misses, Life on the Edge tells the extraordinary story of an adventurer and horseman determined to live life to the full. This was a life defined by a love of Africa, often shared with appreciative clients on Offbeat riding safaris, famous for life-changing adventures and innumerable close shaves with dangerous big game. But Life on the Edge is also the story of compassion, conservation and, ultimately, tragedy. In the last two decades of his life, Voorspuy helped transform the overgrazed and drought-blighted Sosian Ranch in Northern Kenya into a celebrated game reserve, acclaimed tourist destination and successful cattle ranch. True to form, it was while defending this property that an unarmed Tristan was gunned down and killed, a murder that sent shockwaves around the world.

BRITISH

I

Mark Roskams Equestrian Life: From Riding Houses to Country Estates £40.00

n the nineteenth century there were thousands of British gunmakers plying their trade the length and breadth of the land building all qualities of gun and rifle. Gunmakers have dwindled to a very small number today but the nature of the trade has changed from volume production to exclusive best guns only.

This beautiful visual study of the equestrian lifestyle showcases the stables and interiors of country houses and estates across Britain and Ireland. Featuring polo ponies, thoroughbreds, hunt horses and carriage teams, this volume brilliantly demonstrates the diversity of Britain and Ireland’s equine homes.

British gunmakers have embraced the new technology on offer and by using a combination of CNC machining and new steels allied to traditional gunmaking skills, they are building superb quality guns and rifles to the highest standards. Unlike their competitors, British guns are not entirely built by machine and there is a large element of hand craftsmanship in every example built. Not content to rest on their historical laurels, they have introduced new designs and brought their creations right up to date for twenty-first century requirements. Guns and rifles are all built to the exact specifications of the customer and no two are alike. Each gun is individually made yet designed to embrace modern requirements such as high pheasants, steel shot and so on. This book shows the great variety of guns and rifles on offer entirely built in Great Britain today and how British gunmakers still continue to lead the world in best quality guns and rifles.

Our booksellers individually select a new book to send to each of their readers every month. These are then beautifully wrapped in our trademark brown paper and blue ribbon and delivered along with an exclusively designed bookmark by Cressida Bell. Our small team of dedicated booksellers, led by Camille Van de Velde, have more than 100 years of collective bookselling experience, and between them read more than 600 books a year (if anything, that’s rounding down…). It is this expertise, combined with the incredible care we take over each of our individual customers, which sets A Year in Books apart. With options to receive books either monthly or bi-monthly, and to choose between hardback or paperback books, prices start at £125, and subscriptions can be sent all over the world. Please direct any enquiries to subscriptions@heywoodhill.com.

What our custom er s say : ‘I enjoyed the selections so much and came to anticipate the package arriving each month. As I have said to others, the experience was akin to walking down streets known, but not familiar, and taking the occasional turn into a side-street or laneway to find an unexpected courtyard garden.‘ DAVID

‘I’m a lucky recipient of the “A Year in Books” monthly subscription, and it’s truly one of the best gifts I’ve received. Each book I’ve received so far has been excellent, in content and in matching my literary interests. Could not recommend this service more!’ COURTNEY

‘For the person who is insanely difficult to shop for, this is the most perfect and personal gift. I gave it to myself last year for my birthday and it was the best year of reading I’ve had in ages.’ KATY

Ever wanted a proper library on your favourite subject? This is what we do at Heywood Hill Private Libraries, for those who value books, whether individuals or companies. Each project is different, but our process is the same: we find out what the client wants and then we choose the books that we know they will enjoy over a lifetime. A library can be any size, from a well-chosen shelf of contemporary novels, to a series of rooms containing a range of new, out-of-print and antiquarian volumes. Recent projects have included a library on the history of capitalism, a large collection on creative responses to the natural world, and a private library of modern American fiction. Our expertise lies in researching any given subject to identify the ideal bibliography and then in finding the right books, in the most appealing editions that the project’s budget will allow.
