INNOVATIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT FOR A CLEANER AND SAFER ENVIRONMENT
VLAKFONTEIN IS AVERDA’S LATEST INNOVATIVE LANDFILL SITE. Averda aims to address South Africa’s hazardous waste challenges through sustainable solutions for a safer and cleaner environment. The high-tech facility complies with stringent new environmental guidelines, and utilises international best practice in landfill engineering.
OBJECTIVES • Unlocking value contained within various existing waste streams, through the recovery of secondary resources. • Reduction in waste disposal costs and volumes through practical implementation of the accepted waste hierarchy (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, Dispose). • Reduction in waste transportation costs. • Adaption and improvement of existing waste disposal practices to minimise the future punitive financial impact of planned legislation (taxes, levies, fees). • Waste optimisation through commodity and recyclable trading.
WASTE COVERAGE Vlakfontein offers waste services to the province of Gauteng and beyond. The site accepts waste streams TYPE 4 – 1. This includes, but is not limited to: • Mine tailings
• Waste streams from the petrochemical industry, e.g. Caustic scrubber waste; • Spent catalyst • Various oil and fuel sludge streams • Fuel or oil-contaminated absorbent material from spillages
SITE DETAILS • Licensed as a Class A (H:H) facility with a total coverage of 212 hectares. • The Class A liner (barrier) consists of several layers of compacted clay and two high-density polyethylene geomembrane liners with built-in leakage detection and drainage layers. • Centrally located relative to the substantial industrial and mining operations in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, North West and the Free State. • Innovative construction process – equipment normally associated with dam construction was used to shape the cell and carry out the bulk earth work.
METHODOLOGIES All hazardous waste is screened before it is accepted at Vlakfontein. Some of the pre-landfilling treatment methodologies that will be practiced include: • pH controlled immobilisation of toxic, amphoteric, heavy metals • Immobilisation of volatile heavy metals such as mercury • Immobilisation of certain organics via adsorption • Neutralisation of corrosive material • Stabilisation of liquid streams • Ash-blending of flammable streams to reduce component volatilisation • Reduction of oxidising materials.
SITE SPECIFICATIONS Site classification A (H:H) (Hazardous waste) Liner classification: Class A barrier Property area: 212 Ha Anticipated lifespan: 30 years Overall landfill airspace capacity: 6 500 000m
