Being a student-athlete at Averett University is more than going to class during the week and making big plays on game day. Averett’s coaches want their student-athletes to walk across the stage at graduation with a diploma in one hand and a ring on the other hand.

Academic SUCCESS

USA South Academic All-Conference selections over the past two seasons under head coach Ed Fulton.

Averett baseball senior J.R. Wood is one of several Averett players who define the term “student-athlete” at Averett. Wood, who is majoring in athletic training, has received USA South Academic All-Conference recognition as a freshman, sophomore and junior. In order to earn Acadmic AllConference recognition, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.00 GPA in each semester of the school year.

The Office of Student Success, located in the Galesi Family Student Success Center, offers free academic support to Averett’s more than 300 student-athletes, as well as other members of the campus community. In accordance with Averett’s mission statement, we are here to help you achieve your “big dreams” in order for you to fulfill your “bold future.” Our counselors offer confidential, personable service in person. Our aim is to help with general learning skills and offer individualized tutoring for almost every course. We also provide assistance and accommodations for student-athletes with learning disabilities. The center offers group study nights for math, the sciences and sociology. In addition, we can help you prepare for standardized tests, such as the GRE or Praxis. Finally, we also proctor some exams and the director oversees CLEP exams.

TUTORING PROGRAMS Averett’s Office of Student Success offers individual assistance to students for any class or project. Individual tutoring sessions may be scheduled by appointments and the center also offers walk-in study group sessions at scheduled times each week.

STUDY HALL Averett’s Department of Athletics requires all freshmen to participate in study hall each week to ensure that all first-year students have an opportunity to begin their academic careers on the right foot. The study hall program also is made available to any student-athlete who may require additional academic support during their time at Averett.

LEARNING DISABILITY SERVICES The Office of Student Success works with special needs students who require classroom and testing

CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM Averett University and the Department of Athletics encourage student-athletes to take part in the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success). Averett offers various workshops and activities throughout the academic school year to promote student-athletes’ ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program assists student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills and encourages the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.

CAREER SERVICES Averett teaches success by providing students with career development support. Located in the Galesi Family Student Success Center, the Gregory Career

accommodations to ensure needs are met. We can provide guidance as well if you think you may need testing for a disability, such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

Services Center serves students and alumni. We help student-athletes identify career interests and training needs and assist them with résumés, cover letters and portfolios. We offer career fair and recruitment opportunities and provide training in such skills as interviewing and etiquette. We offer access to our free job listings and help student-athletes search for jobs, internships and graduate school opportunities.

WRITING CENTER Averett’s Writing Center works one-on-one with student-athletes to help them make their writing more vibrant, clear and effective. We assist students in all stages of the process from generating ideas to proofreading the final draft. Our goal is to support your long-term development as a writer, giving you new skills to use in future projects.

Danville is a great place to play, have fun and get away from the everyday hustle and bustle. Maybe you want to relax by fishing in the Dan River or strolling down the scenic Riverwalk Trail. If biking is your forte, Danville has 7.5 miles of multiuse trail and 15 miles of dirt, mountain bike trails that will surely impress you. The city has a place for you to play as well, including 10 recreation centers, 26 athletic fields, 24 playgrounds and 475 park acres. The Danville Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department offers diverse programs for all ages from preschoolers to senior citizens, from basket weaving to belly dancing. Children of all ages will find a summer camp designed especially for them, whether it’s an Averett Sports Camp or something through the city. TRADITION & PHILOSOPHY

Despite being relatively young in age, Averett Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s baseball program is rich in history and tradition. The program played its first varsity season in 1996, and since then has produced a conference championship, an NCAA Tournament appearance and a number of individual honors such as All-Americans and regional awards, in addition to countless all-conference selections. The program also has produced three players who were drafted by Major League Baseball organizations and numerous others who played professional baseball. The baseball team focuses on a number of aspects geared toward the student-athlete. The Averett coaching staff and program provide a family atmosphere while developing each student-athlete as a player and person.

AVERETT ATHLETICS OVERVIEW

As a part of the baseball program, the players and coaches are a tight-knit, close group that come together to achieve their common goals. Averett players remain like brothers for the duration of their years at Averett University and beyond. The bonds that players form with each other and their school as a part of this program are long-lasting. Baseball alumni show great support for the program and remain Averett Cougars for life.

Men’s Basketball Averett’s men’s basketball team has won five conference championships and has made four NCAA Tournament appearances, including three in a row from 2007-2009. The program has also produced two All-Americans and numerous all-conference performers. Women’s Basketball The Averett women’s basketball program has risen to the top half of the conference in recent years. The Cougars have four 11-win seasons in five years.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Baseball players must be willing and able to fully commit themselves to reaching their potential in the classroom, on the field, in the weight room and in the Averett Community. As a part of the program, baseball players are counted on to work extremely hard and compete everyday to be the very best person and baseball player they can be. The Averett coaching staff is dedicated to developing players on and off the field. Head coach Ed Fulton and his staff bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program.

SCHEDULE STRENGTH Averett is a member of the USA South Conference, one of the top Division III baseball conference’s in the nation. Traditionally, the USA South features multiple ranked teams. Since 1976, the conference has featured at least two schools in the NCAA Tournament 22 times. In eight season, three conference teams have made the NCAAs.

Men’s & Women’s Cross Country The cross country programs have seen a steady improvement in recent years. The women’s team has a conference title to its credit. Football The Averett football team has claimed one conference championship and produced more than 100 all-conference performers and numerous professional players despite its young existence (program began play in 2000).

Outside of the USA South Conference slate, Averett plays a number of competitive opponents from the region, including annually ranked teams from the neighboring Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Playing a strong schedule, both in the USA South Conference and non-conference, helps the Averett baseball team prepare for the postseason.

Men’s Golf The men’s golf program at Averett boasts the 2003 Division III NCAA national championship and has made three NCAA appearances as a team. Men’s Soccer The men’s soccer program, which enjoyed several NCAA Tournament appearances early in its existence, has returned to the top of the conference in recent years. The Cougars have made four consecutive conference semifinals appearances. Women’s Soccer The women’s soccer team has become a contender in the USA South Conference. The Cougars won the program’s first conference championship in 2012 and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Softball The softball program, winner of one conference regular season title and one tournament championship, has two 20-win seasons in the last three years. Men’s Tennis The men’s tennis program has a history of success, ranging from 11 conference titles to numerous All-Americans. Women’s Tennis The women’s tennis program has claimed six conference championships and produced several individual award-winners. Women’s Volleyball The Averett women’s volleyball team is one of the most successful programs in the region. The Cougars have won 13 conference titles, made four NCAA appearances and have totaled numerous individual conference awards.

OWEN-FULTON FIELD & ATHLETICS FACILITIES Owen-Fulton Field

Owen-Fulton Field is home to the Averett University baseball team. Located on the school’s North Campus, Owen-Fulton Field serves as the Cougars’ own 2.75-acre ballpark and practice facility. The natural grass field field is a pitcher’s park, with dimensions of 335 feet down the lines, 380 feet to the gaps and 400 feet to center field. The field features home and visitor dugouts, two batting cages, a press box and bleacher seating. Before the 2012 season, Owen-Fulton Field received several upgrades. A state-of-the-art LCD inning-by-inning scoreboard was installed in right-center field, and the outfield fence was fitted with a navy blue windscreen with yellow piping.

NORTH CAMPUS FACILITIES The E. Stuart James Grant Convocation and Athletic Center and North Campus Athletics Facility were opened in the fall of 1998. It is a 55,863-square-foot facility that houses offices for all of Averett’s coaching and administrative staff members. Located in the Grant Center, the main athletics complex, are classrooms used by Averett’s physical education department, six home and six visitor locker areas, an athletic training room used for treatments of all athletes, and a fitness room accessible by all Averett students, faculty and staff. The grounds surrounding the Grant Center include five fields used by all of the outdoor sports for practice and play. Football and men’s and women’s soccer use the Cougar Den, a natural grass field adjacent to the football field house and press box. The stadium seats more than 2,500 faithful Cougar fans and also boasts a two-story press box, which can accommodate up to 30 media representatives and game day personnel. The 7,830-square-foot football field house is the home to offices for all of the football coaching staff, as well as a separate locker room for the football players. There is also a weight room for strength training and as many as four film-study rooms can be utilized at one time by the football team for game preparation. In addition to the Cougar Den, Averett’s baseball team plays and practices on its own 2.75 acre OwenFulton Field. The field is a pitcher’s ballpark, with 410 feet between the plate and the center-field wall, and has stands for fans, batting cages, and its own press box. The Averett softball team practices and plays on the one-acre Cougar Field, which is adjacent to

Completing the North Campus facility are two practice fields on each side of the Cougar Den for the soccer and football teams. The North Campus Facility is one of the pre-

miere athletic venues in Division III. Averett’s tennis facility is currently located on the school’s Main Campus. The venue features six outdoor tennis courts where both the men’s and women’s tennis teams compete and practice. The courts are also open to the Averett and Danville community.

Averett University Athletics is committed to giving back to both the campus and surrounding Danville community. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community organizations and events. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects and activities in the community. The Averett baseball team has done a number of events to help serve the community. In the past, the Cougars have teamed up with the local Walmart store to host a canned food drive. In April 2011, the Averett baseball program was presented with the Walmart Foundation’s Community Volunteer Award for their efforts. The members baseball team also team up with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during Halloween to collect cans and non-perishables. The “Can-oween” event collects approximately 500 cans annually for donation to needy charities around the area. As a whole, Averett University teamed up with the rest of the schools in the USA South Conference for an annual food drive during the fall. Averett collected canned goods and non-perishable items and delivered them to God’s Storehouse in Danville just before Thanksgiving. Averett University donates nearly 2,000 canned goods as a part of the USA South’s Cans Across the Conference each year since the initiative began in 2004. Across the conference, approximately 50,000 cans and other items are collected by the league’s schools each year. The event was created by the members of the USA South Athletic Conference StudentAthlete Advisory Committee in order to help those in need around the holiday season. ORGANIZATIONS AVERETT TEAMS UP WITH

Big Brothers Big Sisters: Numerous Averett student-athletes work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville to reach out to the city’s youth. Averett studentathletes mentor area kids and once a week they eat lunch at school with their “little.” Averett teams also invite the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization to group outings at games. Cancer Awareness: Each year, Averett teams and student-athletes promote cancer awareness. In addition to the volleyball program’s “Dig Pink” game, other Averett teams also get involved, such as football, which also wears pink wristbands and tape during select games in October. Habitat For Humanity: Averett student-athletes and coaches give back to the community throughout the school year. Many teams coordinate with the local

Habitat For Humanity efforts. Teams work on numerous Habitat house in the Danville area. Pennies for a Purpose: In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed “Pennies for a Purpose” in 2008. This community service initiative has raised more than $19,000 for local organizations. Averett has donated its collections in the past for such things such as earthquake relief in Haiti. Youth Camps/Outreach: Averett student-athletes enjoy reaching out to kids in the Danville area. Several teams hold youth clinics throughout the school year and encourage kids to come and learn new skills and techniques. Other teams also act as positive role models through various activities such as talking to kids in area schools or working with local youth sports organizations.

ED FULTON HEAD COACH Ed Fulton has been Averett’s baseball coach since 1996, when he took over a program that had completed only one varsity season. In 17 seasons at Averett, Fulton’s teams have won more than 330 games and a USA South Conference championship Fulton has guided his team to 10 20plus win seasons including four in a row. In 2013, he led his team to a 24-16 record after going 26-18, 22-19 and 25-17 the previous three seasons. Over the past 11 seasons the Cougars have posted a 300-261-1 record under Fulton’s direction, including a 2003 USA South Conference Tournament championship and a 2007 team that went 31-12. The 2003 championship team he built is a far cry from the 10-24 season he endured his first year on the job in 1997. In 2003, Averett finished tied for third in the league with a 6-6 record. However,

Fulton guided his fourth seeded Cougars to five wins in six games en route to his first USA South Conference Tournament Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional in Hickory, N.C. The Cougars posted a 27-14 overall record that season against one of the toughest schedules in the country. The late season run also lifted Averett to their first top-10 national ranking (seventh) in the program’s history. Fulton’s squad was also considered the top team in the region following the tournament championship. Well versed in all aspects of the game, Fulton’s specialties are no doubt in the areas of hitting and catching. Averett held a team batting average of .322 and averaged 7.5 runs per game in 2003. If you also consider that 6.5 of those runs per game were earned runs, then Fulton’s credibility as a hitting coach becomes very apparent.

Behind the plate, Fulton is arguably one of the best teachers in the nation. He helped develop Greg Stevens into one of the best catchers in the south region and into a current professional ballplayer. In addition to Stevens, Fulton has also coached pitcher Gene Yost, a 20th round selection by the Nationals in 2004, and outfielder Eddie Guessford, as well as countless others, to successful professional careers. Due to his professional background, Fulton has made many contacts with professional players, scouts, coaches and managers. Before bringing the Cougars to national prominence, Fulton spent nine years in the minor leagues, six of those seasons at the AAA level. The St. Louis Cardinals picked him in the 16th round during the 1987 draft. Fulton’s professional career included stints with the Cardinals, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox.

Fulton played collegiate baseball at Florida State University under legendary coach Mike Martin, where the Seminoles won 230 games during his college career. He helped guide FSU to berths in the College World Series in 1986 and 1987. In 1986, Fulton was selected to the USA National Team and earned All-America honors in 1987. A native of Danville, Va., Fulton earned his bachelor’s degree from Averett in 1998. He and his wife, Christie, reside in Danville. The couple has three children: Justin, Kenna and Camden.

Matthew Mitchell joined the Averett baseball staff as an assistant coach in August 2012. A native of Hampton, Va., Mitchell played four seasons for the Cougars from 2009-2012 as an infielder and pitcher. He appeared in 114 games, batting .244 for his career with 54 runs scored and 50 RBIs. On the mound, he compiled an 8-5 record with three saves with a 3.45 earned run average in 109.2 innings. As a senior, Mitchell earned USA South All-Conference Honorable Mention honors at second base and was Averett’s representative on the USA South All-Sportsmanship Team. As a junior he was named to USA South All-Conference Second Team at second base. Mitchell was also a USA South Academic All-Conference performer. Mitchell has gained baseball coaching experience through helping at his alma mater, Hampton High Shool, as well as several other coaching internships. During the summer of 2012, Mitchell helped coach the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plains League, a team that featured six players who were drafted by major league teams. Mitchell graduated in May 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and coaching. He is currently working toward his master’s in education from Averett.

Sibrizzi Assistant Coach l Third Season Clayton, N.C. l Averett (‘11)

Jon Walker has been an assistant coach on the Cougars’ staff since July 2009, serving as the program’s pitching coach. Walker, a native of Danville, played three seasons for Averett as a pitcher. Since joining the Averett coaching staff, Walker mentored current pitcher Chris Moyer to 2010 USA South Conference Rookie Pitcher of the Year honors as a freshman, along numerous other all-conference pitchers during his tenure. At Averett, Walker also assists with recruiting throughout the South Region. Walker was a successful pitcher during his playing days with the Cougars. In his senior season, he finished second in the USA South Conference with a 0.81 earned run average. He also tied for the team lead in saves. Prior to transferring to Averett, Walker played one season at Division I Campbell University where he pitched 50 innings as a freshman, making eight starts in 17 appearances. In high school, Walker was a standout at nearby George Washington High School, where he set the school record for career wins with a 24-1 record. He was named the Western Valley District Pitcher of the Year as a junior and senior and earned a scholarship to Campbell. In 2011, Walker started the Virginia Reds 17U Travel Team. In two years of coaching the Virginia Reds, 23 of his players have gone on to play at the collegiate level. The Reds travel up and down the East Coast from June-October playing other elite travel teams at college venues to help expose high school players to college scouts. Walker has coached high school players from many of the local high schools in the Danville region. In November 2012, Walker founded and opened the Virginia Reds Training Facility in the Downtown Tobacco Warehouse District of Danville. The training facility is home to the Virginia Reds 12U and 17U travel teams.

Eric Sibrizzi has served as a graduate-assistant coach on the Averett baseball staff since 2011 after playing four seasons for the Cougars. A native of Clayton, N.C., Sibrizzi was selected as the Averett Cougar Club Male Athlete of the Year following his senior season in which he was named to the USA South All-Conference Honorable Mention Team as a third baseman and picked as Averett’s representative on the USA South All-Sportsmanship Team. A member of the Academic All-Conference Team, Sibrizzi also earned numerous all-conference honors. During his freshman season, he was named the USA South Conference Rookie of the Year, was selected to the USA South All-Conference First Team and the USA South All-Tournament Team as a second baseman, and he was an Honorable Mention All-Region selection. He was named to the USA South All-Conference Honorable Mention team as a sophomore. Sibrizzi finished his career with a .337 batting average, 93 RBIs, 118 runs scored and 21 doubles. As a senior, he led the nation in sacrifice hits. Sibrizzi graduated in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree from Averett and is currently working toward his master’s in education from Averett.

Carrie Hendrick is in her first year as Averett’s head athletic trainer. Hendrick served as the assistant athletic trainer at Lenoir Rhyne University, as an assistant athletic trainer at Carson Newman College and as a high school head athletic trainer. Hendrick worked with a number of athletics programs during a graduate assistantship at Virginia Tech and gained experience as a student at Bluefield College and through an internship with the Bluefield Orioles. Hendrick received her bachelor’s degree from Bluefield in 2004. She earned her master’s in education, health and physical education from Virginia Tech in 2006 and completed her doctorate degree of philosophy, curriculum and instruction from Virginia Tech in 2010.

Thomas Underwood is in his third year as Averett’s Assistant Athletic Trainer. Underwood was hired in September 2011 after spending the previous year working at Guilford Orthopaedic Clinic in Greensboro, N.C. Thomas is a graduate of Averett University with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. While at Averett as a student, Thomas worked with the football, baseball and men’s soccer teams. He also interned with the Green Bay Packers in the summer of 2008. He currently resides in Danville with his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Colton and Collins.

Grandia Intern Athletic Trainer l Second Season Albuquerque, N.M. l New Mexico (‘12)

Alex Grandia has served as Averett’s intern trainer since July 2012. A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Alex graduated in May of 2012 from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelors of Science degree in Athletic Training. Throughout her time as an undergrad, Alex worked with the various Division I sports at New Mexico.

Dr. Tiffany M. Franks Averett University President Dr. Tiffany McKillip Franks became the president of Averett University on July 1, 2008. Through her collaborative, high energy, interpersonal leadership style, Averett has embarked on an exciting voyage of change and growth. The University is a place where big dreams can become bold futures. The University is experiencing record new student enrollment, and is consistently ranked in the Top Tier of Regional Colleges in the South in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges guide. Averett also recently learned that it has been included among Princeton Review’s Best Regional Colleges, that it has been ranked one of Virginia’s top colleges for return on investment by Affordable Colleges Online, and that it has been named one of America’s most military-friendly schools by G.I. Jobs magazine for the fourth consecutive year. In addition, Colleges of Distinction recently announced that Averett has been named a 2013-2014 College of Distinction, “chosen for its continued commitment to the Four Distinctions: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Community, and Successful Outcomes.” With the first-hand knowledge she gained through conversations with constituents, Franks and her leadership team constructed a strategic plan and have embarked on the University’s first comprehensive capital campaign that will grow Averett to becoming a premier higher education leader in Southern Virginia. With 25 years of senior-level administrative experience in higher education that began when she was 23 as the dean of students, Franks’ leadership style and problem-solving expertise have led her through leadership roles in admissions, financial aid, student life, marketing and communications, public relations and fundraising. Before taking the helm at Averett, she served as the executive vice president at Greensboro College in North Carolina. Franks earned her BA from Ohio Dominican University; a master’s of science in education from The Ohio State University; and her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in higher education management. Franks sees Averett’s role as a community building one and she currently serves on the board of directors for the A.L. Philpott Manufacturing Extending Partnership, the Future of the Piedmont, the Danville Pittsylvania Chamber of Commerce, The Boys and Girls Club and the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. Franks is the pastchair of the Smart Beginnings Leadership Council of Danville Pittsylvania County and is a member of the Rotary Club of Danville and the Wednesday Club. She is married to Joe Franks, who recently retired as a long-time high school teacher and head men’s and women’s golf coach at Grimsley High School in Greensboro. Joe still serves as the assistant director of the North Carolina Coaches Association.

One of the oldest Division III conferences in the nation, the USA South Conference was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. Those colleges were Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College (now Methodist University), North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003, and the first USA South Athletic Conference championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time, the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports. The Conference sponsored athletic programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The Conference now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, golf and women’s lacrosse for a total of 14 sports.

Presently, the Conference features 15 institutions, four in Virginia, five in North Carolina, four in Georgia, one in Tennessee and one in Alabama. Averett University, Covenant College, Ferrum College, Greensboro College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Mary Baldwin College, Maryville College, Meredith College, Piedmont College and William Peace University have joined Methodist and N.C. Wesleyan and make up today’s conference full-time membership. Christopher Newport University competes in football only, while Agnes Scott College competes in women’s lacrosse only. Covenant and Huntingdon join the conference for the 2013-14 academic year.

WHAT IS THE COUGAR CLUB?

WHY SHOULD I JOIN?

Created in 1989, the Cougar Club is a non-profit organization whose primary objective is to raise money to provide a positive experience for Averett student-athletes and fans. The activities of the Cougar Club are varied, but are all designed with the student-athlete in mind. Each year, hundreds of Cougar supporters pledge their support of Averett University student-athletes by joining the Cougar Club. Thanks to our loyal supporters, Averett student-athletes have the opportunity to succeed in both the classroom and on the field.

Averett University is committed to success, and has a long tradition of excellence. The Cougar Club is committed to providing Averett student-athletes with the opportunity to succeed academically, as well as in their respective sport. At Averett, we recruit good students that happen to be talented athletes. Private support of academic and athletic programs is crucial to our student-athletes in the increasingly competitive landscape of intercollegiate athletics.
