Being a student-athlete at Averett University is more than going to class during the week and making big plays on game day. Averett’s coaches want their student-athletes to walk across the stage at graduation with a diploma in one hand and a ring on the other hand.

Academic SUCCESS

Men’s basketball players earned USA South Academic All-Conference honors since the 2012-13 season.

Averett men’s basketball senior Darnell Collins is one of several Averett players who define the term “student-athlete” at Averett. Collins, who is majoring in computer information systems, received USA South Academic All-Conference recognition last season. In order to earn Acadmic AllConference recognition, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.00 GPA in each semester of the school year. Collins also earned 2013-14 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court recognition for his academic success.

The Office of Student Success, located in the Galesi Family Student Success Center, offers free academic support to Averett’s more than 300 student-athletes, as well as other members of the campus community. In accordance with Averett’s mission statement, we are here to help you achieve your “big dreams” in order for you to fulfill your “bold future.” Our counselors offer confidential, personable service in person. Our aim is to help with general learning skills and offer individualized tutoring for almost every course. We also provide assistance and accommodations for student-athletes with learning disabilities. The center offers group study nights for math, the sciences and sociology. In addition, we can help you prepare for standardized tests, such as the GRE or Praxis. Finally, we also proctor some exams and the director oversees CLEP exams.

TUTORING PROGRAMS Averett’s Office of Student Success offers individual assistance to students for any class or project. Individual tutoring sessions may be scheduled by appointments and the center also offers walk-in study group sessions at scheduled times each week.

STUDY HALL Averett’s Department of Athletics requires all freshmen to participate in study hall each week to ensure that all first-year students have an opportunity to begin their academic careers on the right foot. The study hall program also is made available to any student-athlete who may require additional academic support during their time at Averett.

LEARNING DISABILITY SERVICES The Office of Student Success works with special needs students who require classroom and testing

CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM Averett University and the Department of Athletics encourage student-athletes to take part in the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success). Averett offers various workshops and activities throughout the academic school year to promote student-athletes’ ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program assists student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills and encourages the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.

We offer access to our free job listings and help student-athletes search for jobs, internships and graduate school opportunities.

WRITING CENTER Averett’s Writing Center works one-on-one with student-athletes to help them make their writing more vibrant, clear and effective. We assist students in all stages of the process from generating ideas to proofreading the final draft. Our goal is to support your long-term development as a writer, giving you new skills to use in future projects.

Danville is a great place to play, have fun and get away from the everyday hustle and bustle. Maybe you want to relax by fishing in the Dan River or strolling down the scenic Riverwalk Trail. If biking is your forte, Danville has 7.5 miles of multiuse trail and 15 miles of dirt, mountain bike trails that will surely impress you. The city has a place for you to play as well, including 10 recreation centers, 26 athletic fields, 24 playgrounds and 475 park acres. The Danville Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department offers diverse programs for all ages from preschoolers to senior citizens, from basket weaving to belly dancing. Men's BASKETBALL TRADITION & PHILOSOPHY

Averett University’s men’s basketball program is rich in history and tradition. With success dating back to the 1990s, the Averett men’s basketball team surged back to the top of the conference from 2005-2009 with three conference regular season championships, three conference tournament titles and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The program has also produced a number of individual honors such as All-Americans and regional awards, in addition to countless all-conference selections. The men’s basketball program has three core values that it follows closely: character, commitment and togetherness. Averett men’s basketball players will be of high character and hard working. They will be consistently devoted to getting better as people and as players.

AVERETT ATHLETICS OVERVIEW

Character is of the utmost importance and the first thing that Head Coach David Doino looks for when recruiting players for his program. As a part of the men’s basketball program, players will carry themselves with high moral character and be exemplary ambassadors for Averett on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. Men’s basketball players will participate in a large number of community service projects throughout each year, including Special Olympics, the Big Brother Big Sister Program, Habitat for Humanity, and the Boys and Girls Club. Averett men’s basketball players understand that volunteering their time is important, because they realize the positive impact their actions can have on others at Averett University and in the Danville community.

Baseball Averett’s baseball team, which began play in 1997, has been an annual contender in one of the toughest DIII conferences in the country. The Cougars won the 2003 USA South championship and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. The program has produced several All-Americans and pro draft picks. Women’s Basketball The Averett women’s basketball program has risen to the top half of the conference in recent years. The Cougars have four 11-win seasons in six years. Men’s & Women’s Cross Country The cross country programs have seen a steady improvement in recent years. The women’s team has a conference title to its credit.

COMMITMENT Men’s basketball players must be willing and able to fully commit themselves to reaching their potential in the classroom, on the court, in the weight room, and in the Averett Community. Most importantly, members of the men’s basketball program must be committed to graduating. As a part of this program, men’s basketball players are counted on to work extremely hard and compete everyday to be the very best person and basketball player they can be. Commitment also means that members of the men’s basketball program will at times be asked to put the goals of the team ahead of their own goals, because in the end, only the team, not the individual, can be the ultimate champion.

TOGETHERNESS “Together” is the mantra of nearly every Averett huddle and is the way in which the members of the program interact. As a part of this program, the players and coaches are a tightknit, close group that come together to achieve their common goals. Averett players remain like brothers for the duration of their years at Averett University and beyond. The bonds that players form with each other and their school as a part of this program are long-lasting. Men’s basketball alumni show great support for the program and remain Averett Cougars for life.

Football The Averett football team has claimed one conference championship and produced more than 100 all-conference performers and numerous professional players despite its young existence (program began play in 2000). Men’s Golf The men’s golf program at Averett boasts the 2003 Division III NCAA national championship and has made three NCAA appearances as a team. Men’s Soccer The men’s soccer program, which enjoyed several NCAA Tournament appearances early in its existence, has returned to the top of the conference in recent years. The Cougars made five consecutive conference semifinals appearances entering 2014. Women’s Soccer The women’s soccer team has become a front-runner in the USA South Conference after winning the 2012 USA South Conference championship and reaching the NCAAs. Softball The softball program, winner of one conference regular season title and one tournament championship, has three 20-win seasons in the last four years. Men’s Tennis The men’s tennis program has a history of success, ranging from 11 conference titles to numerous All-Americans. Women’s Tennis The women’s tennis program has claimed six conference championships and produced several individual award-winners. Women’s Volleyball The Averett women’s volleyball team is one of the most successful programs in the region. The Cougars have won 14 conference titles, made four NCAA appearances and have totaled numerous individual conference awards.

Grant Center & ATHLETICS FACILITIES

The E. Stuart James Grant Convocation Center

The Grant Center arena houses the main hardwood court used by the Averett men’s basketball team. Bleachers that seat more than 1,500 fans surround the main court and may be retracted to expose an additional two courts that can be utilized for warm-ups or additional teams during tournament play. The arena also houses the basketball locker rooms, weight room and athletic training room. The Grant Center also hosts Averett’s graduation ceremonies, concerts and other sporting events such as the Harlem Globetrotters (as seen above).

NORTH CAMPUS FACILITIES The E. Stuart James Grant Convocation and Athletic Center and North Campus Athletics Facility were opened in the fall of 1998. It is a 55,863-square-foot facility that houses offices for all of Averett’s coaching and administrative staff members. Located in the Grant Center, the main athletics complex, are classrooms used by Averett’s physical education department, six home and six visitor locker areas, an athletic training room used for treatments of all athletes, and a fitness room accessible by all Averett students, faculty and staff. The grounds surrounding the Grant Center include five fields used by all of the outdoor sports for practice and play. Football and men’s and women’s soccer use Daly Field, which features state-of-the-art synthetic turf and lights, adjacent to the football field house and press box. The stadium seats more than 2,500 faithful Cougar fans and also boasts a twostory press box, which can accommodate up to 30 media representatives and game day personnel. The 7,830-square-foot football field house is the home to offices for all of the football coaching staff, as well as a separate locker room for the football players. There is also a weight room for strength training and as many as four film-study rooms can be utilized at one time by the football team for game preparation. In addition to Daly Field, Averett’s baseball team plays and practices on its own 2.75 acre Owen-Fulton Field. The field is a pitcher’s ballpark, with 410 feet between the plate and the center-field wall, and has stands for fans, batting cages, and its own press box. The Averett softball team practices and plays on the one-acre Cougar Field, which is adjacent to

miere athletic venues in Division III. Averett’s tennis facility is currently located on the school’s Main Campus. The venue features six outdoor tennis courts where both the men’s and women’s tennis teams compete and practice. The courts are also open to the Averett and Danville community.

Averett University Athletics is committed to giving back to both the campus and surrounding Danville community. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community organizations and events. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects and activities in the community. The Averett men’s basketball team has done a number of events to help serve the community. Throughout the year, Averett’s players work closely with Big Brothers Big Sisters. The players not only mentor a “little” but also eat lunch with them at his or her school once a week. The Cougars also work closely with the Special Olympics of Danville. In the past, the team has held basketball clinics and has gone bowling with the Special Olympians. The men’s basketball team has also partnered with the Boys & Girls Club, the YMCA After School program and Get Fit Danville. The team has also supported a local family for the holidays and have volunteered at Forest Hills Elementary School’s Fall Festival. The members of the men’s basketball team also teamed up with the StudentAthlete Advisory Committee during Halloween to collect cans and non-perishables. The “Can-oween” event collected over 500 cans for donation to needy charities around the area. As a whole, Averett University teamed up with the rest of the schools in the USA South Conference for an annual food drive during the fall. Averett collected canned goods and non-perishable items and delivered them to God’s Storehouse in Danville just before Thanksgiving. Averett University donates nearly 2,000 canned goods as a part of the USA South’s Cans Across the Conference each year. The event was created by the members of the USA South Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in order to help those in need around the holiday season. ORGANIZATIONS AVERETT TEAMS UP WITH

Big Brothers Big Sisters: Numerous Averett student-athletes work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville to reach out to the city’s youth. Averett studentathletes mentor area kids and once a week they eat lunch at school with their “little.” Averett teams also invite the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization to group outings at games. Cancer Awareness: Each year, Averett teams and student-athletes promote cancer awareness. In addition to the volleyball program’s “Dig Pink” game, other Averett teams also get involved, such as football, which also wears pink wristbands and tape during select games in October. Habitat For Humanity: Averett student-athletes and coaches give back to the community throughout the school year. Many teams coordinate with the local

Habitat For Humanity efforts. Teams work on numerous Habitat house in the Danville area. Pennies for a Purpose: In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed “Pennies for a Purpose” in 2008. This community service initiative has raised more than $19,000 for local organizations. Averett has donated its collections in the past for such things such as earthquake relief in Haiti. Youth Camps/Outreach: Averett student-athletes enjoy reaching out to kids in the Danville area. Several teams hold youth clinics throughout the school year and encourage kids to come and learn new skills and techniques. Other teams also act as positive role models through various activities such as talking to kids in area schools or working with local youth sports organizations.

Coaching Timeline: 2004-2005 Virginia Wesleyan College Student-Assistant Coach

HEAD COACH David Doino was named the Averett men’s basketball head coach in August 2014 after serving as an assistant coach at North Carolina Wesleyan College since 2007. Doino became the ninth coach of the men’s basketball program since it began NCAA play in 1976. He took over a program that has a history of success, including four NCAA Tournament appearances and five conference championships. During his seven seasons as an assistant at fellow USA South Conference foe N.C. Wesleyan, Doino helped guide the Battling Bishops to a 106-79 record with one NCAA Tournament appearance, one USA South Conference Tournament championship and two conference regular season titles. He also helped coach two USA South Players of the Year and two National Basketball Coaches Association All-Americans. At N.C. Wesleyan, Doino was responsible for recruiting, scouting, directing

strength and conditioning and monitoring the academic progress of men’s basketball team. Prior to working at N.C. Wesleyan, Doino was an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan from 2005 through 2007, where he helped coach the Marlins to the 2006 NCAA Division III national championship. A year later, he helped Virginia Wesleyan return to the championship game, where the Marlins finished as the 2007 national runner-up. Doino also served as a student-assistant at Virginia Wesleyan during the 2004-2005 season. In addition to coaching basketball, Doino has been N.C. Wesleyan’s community service coordinator since 2007. He has also had stints as the head coach for N.C. Wesleyan men’s cross country and men’s golf teams. In addition, he coached the men’s golf team at Virginia Wesleyan from 20052007. A native of Bronx, New York, Doino is

a 2005 graduate of Virginia Wesleyan with a degree in communications. While a student at Virginia Wesleyan, he was a fouryear starter for the Marlins’ men’s basketball program. He helped Virginia Wesleyan go 70-36 while advancing to the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game. He finished his career as a 1,000-point scorer and a three-time AllODAC selection. Doino lives in Danville with his wife, Lauren, and son, Anthony.

Jonathan Thompson joined the Averett men’s basketball program as an assistant coach in June 2013. A native of Hartland, Wisconsin, Thompson has gained valuable coaching experience at both Arrowhead and Oregon high schools in Wisconsin, as well as at the University of Wisconsin basketball camps run by Bo Ryan. Thompson also serves as Averett’s men’s and women’s cross country head coach. Thompson graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2010 with a degree in finance. He is also currently working to earn his MBA from Averett. He married his wife, Christine, in June 2012 and they reside in Danville.

Thomas Underwood is in his third year as Averett’s Assistant Athletic Trainer. Underwood was hired in September 2011 after spending the previous year working at Guilford Orthopaedic Clinic in Greensboro, N.C. Thomas is a graduate of Averett University with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. While at Averett as a student, Thomas worked with the football, baseball and men’s soccer teams. He also interned with the Green Bay Packers in the summer of 2008. He currently resides in Danville with his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Colton and Collins.

Cornelius Snow IV joined the Averett men’s basketball program as an assistant coach in September 2014. A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Snow comes to Averett after finishing a four-year playing career at N.C. Wesleyan College, where he played for Averett head coach David Doino, who was formerly an assistant at N.C. Wesleyan. As a men’s basketball student-athlete for the Battling Bishops, Snow was a member of N.C. Wesleyan’s back-to-back USA South Conference championship teams, including being a captain on the 2010-11 squad. Snow also succeeded in the class room, earning USA South Academic All-Conference honors in three times. He also was a member of the 2011-12 National Association of Basketball Coaches All-Academic Team. Snow graduated from N.C. Wesleyan in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business. He is pursuing his master’s degree in business from Averett.

Angela McNeely joined Averett University as its assistant athletic trainer in July 2014. A native of Danville, McNeely came to Averett with a wealth of experience in athletic training at the collegiate and high school level. In the spring of 2014, she served as an athletic training student with the Shenandoah University men’s basketball and baseball teams. Prior to that, McNeely was a student athletic trainer with the University of Richmond football team and several high schools in the Winchester, Va., area. McNeely received her master’s of science degree in athletic training from Shenandoah in May 2014. She completed her bachelor’s of science degree in kinesiology and psychology from Shenandoah in 2012.

One of the oldest Division III conferences in the nation, the USA South Conference was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. Those colleges were Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College (now Methodist University), North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003, and the first USA South Athletic Conference championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time, the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports. The Conference sponsored athletic programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The Confer-

www.usasouth.net @usa_south ence now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, golf and women’s lacrosse for a total of 14 sports. Presently, the Conference features 15 institutions, four in Virginia, five in North Carolina, four in Georgia, one in Tennessee and one in Alabama. Averett University, Covenant College, Ferrum College, Greensboro College, Huntingdon College, LaGrange College, Mary Baldwin College, Maryville College, Meredith College, Piedmont College and William Peace University have joined Methodist and N.C. Wesleyan and make up today’s conference full-time membership. Christopher Newport University competes in football only, while Agnes Scott College competes in women’s lacrosse only.

Created in 1989, the Cougar Club is a non-profit organization whose primary objective is to raise money to provide a positive experience for Averett student-athletes and fans. The activities of the Cougar Club are varied, but are all designed with the student-athlete in mind. Each year, hundreds of Cougar supporters pledge their support of Averett University student-athletes by joining the Cougar Club.
