Academic SUCCESS

Averett softball players earned USA South Academic All-Conference honors in 2011-12 under head coach Bren LaFlamme

Averett softball senior Molly Nanney is one of several Averett players who define the term “student-athlete” at Averett. Nanney, who is majoring in wellness and sports medicine, received USA South Academic All-Conference recognition as a freshman and junior. In order to earn Acadmic All-Conference recognition, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.00 GPA in each semester of the school year.

The Office of Student Success, located in the Galesi Family Student Success Center, offers free academic support to Averett’s more than 300 student-athletes, as well as other members of the campus community. In accordance with Averett’s mission statement, we are here to help you achieve your “big dreams” in order for you to fulfill your “bold future.” Our counselors offer confidential, personable service in person. Our aim is to help with general learning skills and offer individualized tutoring for almost every course. We also provide assistance and accommodations for student-athletes with learning disabilities. The center offers group study nights for math, the sciences and sociology. In addition, we can help you prepare for standardized tests, such as the GRE or Praxis. Finally, we also proctor some exams and the director oversees CLEP exams.

TUTORING PROGRAMS Averett’s Office of Student Success offers individual assistance to students for any class or project. Individual tutoring sessions may be scheduled by appointments and the center also offers walk-in study group sessions at scheduled times each week.

STUDY HALL Averett’s Department of Athletics requires all freshmen to participate in study hall each week to ensure that all first-year students have an opportunity to begin their academic careers on the right foot. The study hall program also is made available to any student-athlete who may require additional academic support during their time at Averett.

LEARNING DISABILITY SERVICES The Office of Student Success works with special needs students who require classroom and testing

CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM Averett University and the Department of Athletics encourage student-athletes to take part in the NCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success). Averett offers various workshops and activities throughout the academic school year to promote student-athletes’ ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program assists student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills and encourages the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.

CAREER SERVICES Averett teaches success by providing students with career development support. Located in the Galesi Family Student Success Center, the Gregory Career

accommodations to ensure needs are met. We can provide guidance as well if you think you may need testing for a disability, such as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

Services Center serves students and alumni. We help student-athletes identify career interests and training needs and assist them with résumés, cover letters and portfolios. We offer career fair and recruitment opportunities and provide training in such skills as interviewing and etiquette. We offer access to our free job listings and help student-athletes search for jobs, internships and graduate school opportunities.

WRITING CENTER Averett’s Writing Center works one-on-one with student-athletes to help them make their writing more vibrant, clear and effective. We assist students in all stages of the process from generating ideas to proofreading the final draft. Our goal is to support your long-term development as a writer, giving you new skills to use in future projects.

Danville is a great place to play, have fun and get away from the everyday hustle and bustle. Maybe you want to relax by fishing in the Dan River or strolling down the scenic Riverwalk Trail. If biking is your forte, Danville has 7.5 miles of multiuse trail and 15 miles of dirt, mountain bike trails that will surely impress you. The city has a place for you to play as well, including 10 recreation centers, 26 athletic fields, 24 playgrounds and 475 park acres. The Danville Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department offers diverse programs for all ages from preschoolers to senior citizens, from basket weaving to belly dancing. TRADITION & PHILOSOPHY

Despite being relatively young in age, Averett Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s softball program is rich in history and tradition. The program began play in the mid-1980s and since then has produced multiple conference championships, an NCAA Tournament appearance and a number of individual honors such as conference player of the year and regional awards, in addition to countless all-conference selections. The softball team focuses on a number of aspects geared toward the student-athlete. The Averett coaching staff and program provide a family atmosphere while developing each student-athlete as a player and person.

AVERETT ATHLETICS OVERVIEW

As a part of the softball program, the players and coaches are a tight-knit, close group that come together to achieve their common goals. The team’s slogan is “ONEAU” to symbolize “one team, one play, one game, one season at a time.” Averett players remain like sisters for the duration of their years at Averett University and beyond. The bonds that players form with each other and their school as a part of this program are long-lasting. Softball alumni show great support for the program and remain Averett Cougars for life.

Baseball Averett’s baseball team, which began play in 1997, has been an annual contender in one of the toughest DIII conferences in the country. The Cougars won the 2003 USA South championship and appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Men’s Basketball Averett’s men’s basketball team has won five conference championships and has made four NCAA Tournament appearances, including three in a row from 2007-2009. The program has also produced two All-Americans and numerous all-conference performers.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Softball players must be willing and able to fully commit themselves to reaching their potential in the classroom, on the field, in the weight room and in the Averett Community. As a part of the program, softball players are counted on to work extremely hard and compete everyday to be the very best person and softball player they can be. The Averett coaching staff strives to help the members of the team achieve success, especially in the classroom. Their goal is to have the highest team grade point average on campus.

SCHEDULE STRENGTH Averett plays a tough USA South Conference schedule that features at least one ranked team each season. Since 1998, the conference has featured at least two schools in the NCAA Tournament eight times.

Women’s Basketball The Averett women’s basketball program has risen to the top half of the conference in recent years. The Cougars have four straight 11-win seasons. Men’s & Women’s Cross Country The cross country programs have seen a steady improvement in recent years. The women’s team has a conference title to its credit.

Outside of the USA South Conference slate, Averett plays a number of competitive opponents from the region, including annually ranked teams from the neighboring Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Playing a strong schedule, both in the USA South Conference and non-conference, helps the Averett softball team prepare for the postseason. In 2012, Averett defeated two Top 25 teams.

Football The Averett football team has claimed one conference championship, produced more than 100 all-conference performers and numerous professional players despite its young existence (program began play in 2000). Men’s Golf The men’s golf program at Averett boasts the 2003 Division III NCAA national championship and has made three NCAA appearances as a team. Men’s Soccer The men’s soccer team has become a contender in the USA South Conference after reaching four consecutive tournament semifinals. The program also boasts three NCAA Tournament appearances. Women’s Soccer The women’s soccer team has become a contender in the USA South Conference. The Cougars won the program’s first conference championship in 2012 and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Men’s Tennis The men’s tennis program has a history of success, ranging from 11 conference championships to numerous All-Americans. Women’s Tennis The women’s tennis program has claimed six conference championships and produced several individual award-winners. Women’s Volleyball The Averett women’s volleyball team is one of the most successful programs in the region. The Cougars have won 13 conference titles, made four NCAA appearances and have totaled numerous individual conference awards.

COUGAR FIELD & ATHLETICS FACILITIES

Cougar Field

Cougar Field is home to the Averett University softball team. Located on the school’s North Campus, Cougar Field serves as the Cougars’ own 1.0-acre ballpark and practice facility. The park is a natural grass field with dimensions of 210 feet down the lines and 225 feet to center field. The field features home and visitor dugouts, a batting cage, multiple soft-toss nets, a press box and bleacher seating. Before the 2012 season, Cougar Field received several upgrades. A state-of-the-art LCD scoreboard was installed in left field, and the outfield fence was fitted with a navy blue windscreen with yellow piping.

NORTH CAMPUS FACILITIES The E. Stuart James Grant Convocation and Athletic Center and North Campus Athletics Facility were opened in the fall of 1998. It is a 55,863-square-foot facility that houses offices for all of Averett’s coaching and administrative staff members. Located in the Grant Center, the main athletics complex, are classrooms used by Averett’s physical education department, six home and six visitor locker areas, an athletic training room used for treatments of all athletes, and a fitness room accessible by all Averett students, faculty and staff. The grounds surrounding the Grant Center include five fields used by all of the outdoor sports for practice and play. Football and men’s and women’s soccer use the Cougar Den, a natural grass field adjacent to the football field house and press box. The stadium seats more than 2,500 faithful Cougar fans and also boasts a two-story press box, which can accommodate up to 30 media representatives and game day personnel. The 7,830-square-foot football field house is the home to offices for all of the football coaching staff, as well as a separate locker room for the football players. There is also a weight room for strength training and as many as four film-study rooms can be utilized at one time by the football team for game preparation. In addition to the Cougar Den, Averett’s baseball team plays and practices on its own 2.75 acre OwenFulton Field. The field is a pitcher’s ballpark, with 410 feet between the plate and the center-field wall, and has stands for fans, batting cages, and its own press box. The Averett softball team practices and plays on the one-acre Cougar Field, which is adjacent to

Completing the North Campus facility are two practice fields on each side of the Cougar Den for the soccer and football teams. The North Campus Facility is one of the pre-

miere athletic venues in Division III. Averett’s tennis facility is currently located on the school’s Main Campus. The venue features six outdoor tennis courts where both the men’s and women’s tennis teams compete and practice. The courts are also open to the Averett and Danville community.

Averett University Athletics is committed to giving back to both the campus and surrounding Danville community. By providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community organizations and events. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects and activities in the community. The Averett softball team has done a number of events to help serve the community. In the past, the Cougars have teamed up with other athletics teams at the university to host a sports clinic for participants of the Special Olympics in the Danville area. In addition, members of the softball team have done various projects for Habitat for Humanity, as well as visited a local senior citizens home to play games and spend time with its residents. The members softball team also team up with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during Halloween to collect cans and non-perishables. The “Can-oween” event collects approximately 500 cans annually for donation to needy charities around the area. As a whole, Averett University teamed up with the rest of the schools in the USA South Conference for an annual food drive during the fall. Averett collected canned goods and non-perishable items and delivered them to God’s Storehouse in Danville just before Thanksgiving. Averett University donates nearly 2,000 canned goods as a part of the USA South’s Cans Across the Conference each year since the initiative began in 2004. Across the conference, approximately 50,000 cans and other items are collected by the league’s schools each year. The event was created by the members of the USA South Athletic Conference StudentAthlete Advisory Committee in order to help those in need around the holiday season. COUGARS IN THE COMMUNITY

ORGANIZATIONS AVERETT TEAMS UP WITH

Big Brothers Big Sisters: Numerous Averett student-athletes work with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville to reach out to the city’s youth. Averett studentathletes mentor area kids and once a week they eat lunch at school with their “little.” Averett teams also invite the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization to group outings at games. Cancer Awareness: Each year, Averett teams and student-athletes promote cancer awareness. In addition to the volleyball program’s “Dig Pink” game, other Averett teams also get involved, such as football, which also wears pink wristbands and tape during select games in October. Habitat For Humanity: Averett student-athletes and coaches give back to the community throughout the school year. Many teams coordinate with the local

Habitat For Humanity efforts. Teams work on numerous Habitat house in the Danville area. Pennies for a Purpose: In an effort to help worthy organizations during the spring semester, the USA South Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) developed “Pennies for a Purpose” in 2008. This community service initiative has raised more than $19,000 for local organizations. Averett has donated its collections in the past for such things such as earthquake relief in Haiti. Youth Camps/Outreach: Averett student-athletes enjoy reaching out to kids in the Danville area. Several teams hold youth clinics throughout the school year and encourage kids to come and learn new skills and techniques. Other teams also act as positive role models through various activities such as talking to kids in area schools or working with local youth sports organizations.

BREN LAFLAMME HEAD COACH Averett alumna Brenda LaFlamme has been the softball head coach since June 2010. In her first two seasons, she has helped guide the Cougars to back-to-back 20-win seasons. In 2012, LaFlamme’s team finished with a 21-22 record, but the Cougars finished the year strong by winning eight of their last 10 games that culminated with a third-place finish in the USA South Conference Tournament. In 2011, Averett finished 22-19 in her first season. In two seasons, LaFlamme has produced 10 all-conference selections and two all-state selections. LaFlamme became the school’s fifth softball coach and the program’s first fulltime softball coach since its inception in 1983. LaFlamme, who is a member of Averett’s Cougar Club Sports Hall of Fame and the USA South Conference Hall of

Fame, was a four-year standout on Averett’s volleyball team from 1994-1997. The three-time conference player of the year and two-time conference tournament most valuable player was a 1997 American Volleyball Coaches Association Second-Team All-American selection and a two-time AllSouth Region pick. She still holds numerous program records. The Danville native and Tunstall High School graduate also starred on the Averett softball team during her sophomore year. She batted .369 with 21 runs scored and 12 RBIs during the 1996 season as a middle infielder and pitcher. She also was named to the conference’s all-tournament team as a pitcher and earned Second Team All-State honors from the Virginia Sports Information Directors. LaFlamme joined Averett’s staff after teaching high school mathematics for sev-

en years in the Pittsylvania County school system. She gained coaching experience at both the high school and college levels. While she was still a student at Averett, she served as Gretna High School’s volleyball coach from 1996-1998, leading the Hawks to a district championship. From 19982002, LaFlamme was an assistant coach on Averett’s volleyball team, which won multiple conference titles during that span. From 2004-2005, she coached Tunstall’s junior varsity volleyball and softball squads to district championships. LaFlamme resides in Danville with her daughter, Delaney.

Emily Atkinson joined the Averett softball staff as an assistant coach before the 2013 season. Atkinson was a four-year starter at catcher for Averett, earning USA South All-Conference Second Team honors as a senior in 2012. During her four seasons, Atkinson batted .250 with 77 RBIs, six home runs, 21 doubles and 64 runs scored. She was also one of the best defensive catchers in the conference, picking off 30 runners over four seasons. In addition, as a junior, Atkinson earned USA South All-Conference Honorable Mention honors and was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State Second Team. As a sophomore, she also earned USA South All-Conference Honorable Mention honors. Off the field, Atkinson was named to the USA South Academic All-Conference Team multiple times. A native of Danville, Va., and a product of nearby Tunstall High School, Atkinson graduated from Averett in December 2012 with a degree in physical education and is pursuing her masters of education from Averett.

Steve Hajdas is in his second year at Averett. Hajdas previously served as the head trainer at Mountain State University. A native of Toms River, N.J., Hajdas received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida in 2008 and earned his master’s degree from Marshall University in 2010. Prior to his work at Mountain State, Hajdas also served as a trainer at Marshall and at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Hajdas has been a certified athletic trainer since 2008 and also received certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Performance Enhancement Specialist and a Corrective Exercise Specialist.

Ronnie Dix has served as the Averett softball program’s assistant coach since the 2012 season. A native of the Danville area, Dix has a wealth of coaching knowledge in baseball and softball that dates back to 2000. From 2008-11, he coached the Blue Ridge Bombers 18U fast-pitch team. He was also an assistant softball coach at Tunstall High School from 2008-09. Priot to that, he assisted with the Tunstall baseball team from 2004-05 and coached the Danville Bulls 16U baseball team from 2000-04. Outside of athletics, Dix has worked for Nestle since 1988. He attended Montreat College from 1981-83, where he studied business administration. Dix lives in Danville with his wife, Sharon, and children, Corey and Taylor.

Thomas Underwood is in his second year as Averett’s Assistant Athletic Trainer. Underwood was hired in September 2011 after spending the previous year working at Guilford Orthopaedic Clinic in Greensboro, N.C. Thomas is a graduate of Averett University with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. While at Averett as a student, Thomas worked with the football, baseball and men’s soccer teams. He also had the opportunity to intern with the Green Bay Packers in the summer of 2008. He currently resides in Danville with his wife, Jennifer, and their son, Colton.

Grandia Intern Athletic Trainer l First Season Albuquerque, N.M. l New Mexico (‘12)

Alex Grandia was hired as Averett’s Intern Athletic Trainer in July 2012. A native of Albuquerque, N.M., Alex graduated in May of 2012 from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelors of Science degree in Athletic Training. Throughout her time as an undergrad, Alex worked with the various Division I sports at New Mexico.

Dr. Tiffany M. Franks Averett University President Dr. Tiffany McKillip Franks became the President of Averett University on July 1, 2008. Through her collaborative, high energy, interpersonal leadership style, Averett has embarked on an exciting voyage of change and growth. The University is a place where big dreams can become bold futures. Averett is in the midst of exciting growth, experiencing record new student enrollment. Averett is ranked as a top tier regional college in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2011. With the first-hand knowledge she gained through conversations with constituents, Dr. Franks and her leadership team are laying the groundwork for a strategic plan and major giving campaign that will grow Averett to becoming a premier higher education leader in Southern Virginia. With 24 years of senior-level administrative experience in higher education that began when she was 23 as the dean of students, Franks’ leadership style and problem-solving expertise has led her through leadership roles in admissions, financial aid, student life, marketing and communications, public relations and fundraising. Before taking the helm at Averett, she served as the Executive Vice President at Greensboro College in North Carolina. Franks earned her BA from Ohio Dominican University; a Master’s of Science in Education from The Ohio State University; and her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in Higher Education Management. Franks sees Averett’s role as a community building one and she currently serves on the board of directors for the Future of the Piedmont, the Danville Pittsylvania Chamber of Commerce, The Boys and Girls Club, and the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research. Franks is the Chair of the Smart Beginnings Leadership Council of Danville Pittsylvania County and is member of the Rotary Club of Danville and the Wednesday Club. She is married to Joe Franks who is a high school teacher, head men’s and women’s golf coach at Grimsley High School, and the assistant director of the North Carolina Coaches Association.

One of the oldest Division III conferences in the nation, the USA South Conference was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. Those colleges were Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist College (now Methodist University), North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003, and the first USA South Athletic Conference championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time, the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports. The Conference sponsored athletic programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The Conference now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer,

women’s volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, golf and women’s lacrosse for a total of 14 sports. Presently, the Conference features 13 institutions, four in Virginia, five in North Carolina, three in Georgia and one in Tennessee. Averett University, Christopher Newport University, Ferrum College, Greensboro College, LaGrange College, Mary Baldwin College, Maryville College, Meredith College, Piedmont College and William Peace University have joined Methodist and N.C. Wesleyan and make up today’s conference full-time membership. Maryville became a competing member of the Conference in the fall of 2005 as a football only member and joins the conference as a full-time member in 2012-13, along with LaGrange and Piedmont. Agnes Scott College compete in women’s lacrosse only. The USA South announced in May 2012 that Covenant College and Huntingdon College will join the conference in 2013-14. Christopher Newport is leaving the USA South following 2012-13 in all sports except football.
