WELCOME TO THE START OF A NEW SEASON FOR THE SHANNONS NATIONALS PRESENTED BY HI-TEC OILS
The Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships is now in its seventh year and continues to grow and prosper as Australia’s most prestigious national motor racing series. The 2012 Series provides national level motor racing at Australia’s premier motor racing circuits with nine rounds across five states. The exciting mix of national series and championships delivers quality motor racing for the competitors, race fans, television viewers and sponsors. With quality racing, a variety of fast cars, and extensive television coverage on SBS Speedweek, Fox SPEED Shannons Nationals and insideSPEED, the quiet achiever of motor sport continues to grow into a series of ‘must see’ events for Australian motor sport enthusiasts. The recent introduction of live on-line streaming from each round at www.itvlive.com.au and on-demand Speedweek TV shows via www.sbs.com.au is now making the Shannons Nationals even more accessible to fans. Our on track product will be better than ever before, too. Eastern Creek welcomes the ever-expanding Kumho Tyres V8 Touring Car Series this weekend – and it’s truly been one of the success stories of the past season with flourishing grids, great competition and some exciting cars with great histories. The Radical Australia Cup is back with a bigger program in 2012 and they will begin their season this weekend with a great field and close racing from the nimble Sportscars. The Shannons Nationals have been working very closely with the Swift Australia series to grow their ranks and the response has been positive and is justified with their strongest field yet. A great sign. And then there are old friends returning to race with us including the V8 Commodore Cup and the Australian Manufacturers Championship. We are also excited to continue our long relationship with the ARDC and Eastern Creek Raceway as this fantastic circuit continues to develop and evolve. Certainly, our entry numbers this weekend reflect how much drivers enjoy this circuit. Don’t forget, if you would like to receive the Shannons Nationals News, you can register via the Shannons Nationals Website www.thenationals.com.au Welcome to the Shannons Nationals for 2012. Old Turn 6-7
CHANGES TO EASTERN CREEK LAYOUT EASTERN CREEK will look a little – in fact, quite a lot – different when the Shannons Nationals visits this weekend. Aside from the massive amount of earthworks in place for the new track connection between turns four and nine coupled with the new extra track second now in place around the back of corporate hill, one of the key corners on the existing 3.9km layout has been dramatically altered. The corner known to everyone as ‘turn six’ has been realigned to eradicate the old ‘flip flop’ chicane – a corner that harks back to the circuit’s initial place as the home of Australia’s Motorcycle Grand Prix. Challenging for bikes, the corner never really gelled with car racing and made the following corner almost impossible to overtake at. As these before-and-after images show, the circuit now flows directly into the ninety-degree, uphill left hander at turn seven with a faster entry and a later braking zone which should mean overtaking should be more prolific at the corner hidden behind Corporate Hill. “It’s a great change,” Says Mat Sofi, a regular driver trainer at the circuit and last year’s F3 round winner. “Because you entered turn seven at a strange angle from attacking turn six, it was never any good for passing. You were always trying to slow the car and get it tuned in whilst negotiating the initial right before going left and up under the Corporate Hill bridge. “They have opened up the entry to seven, now, and it should make for better racing. It will also shave some time out of the laps, too – so expect lap records to go.” The changes to turns six and seven are part of a multi-million dollar upgrade of Eastern Creek, being undertaken by the ARDC. The new, shorter, National circuit was used for the first time late last year – though the full 3.9km ‘traditional’ circuit will be used for this weekend’s Shannons Nationals round.
