The Sundial Movie Review

Kevin Durant’s Thunderstruck strikes fans By NICHOLAS KERN Business Editor Kevin Durant strikes audiences and fans across the world on the court and in theaters with his movie debut in Thunderstruck. Durant, a basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder, is a star on the court and in the movie. “If I had the basketball skills of Kevin Durant, I would dominate the sport in high school, college and WNBA to make my mommy proud,” senior Sydney Young said. Durant, being the three time scoring champ from 2010 to 2012 and all star MVP in 2012, now stars in the movie, Thunderstruck. “I think it is a great thing that Kevin Durant is taking time out of his busy NBA schedule to star in this movie. I have followed him throughout his career since he played for Texas, dominating as a longhorn. He is a great role

model for all the young men out there and I respect him a lot for making this inspirational movie,” Mr. Pontier said. In this heartfelt comedy, Durant’s biggest fan, an unfortunately unathletic boy

named Brian, is envious of his idol’s talents. His dream is to become what his hero is today, a basketball prodigy. Brian, through fortunate events, is selected to shoot a sponsored half-court

shot at an OKC basketball game, but he fails. On the bright side, his hero, Durant, rewards him for his efforts, for being his biggest fan and for giving him an authentic OKC basketball, but neither of

them knew just how special this ball was. Through magic, Durant and Brian’s talents were switched, giving Brian the talents of the NBA star and leaving Durant with absolutely no talent at all. Brian soon becomes aware of his newly found basketball skills and becomes very popular in high school, dominating basketball at his high school. While Brian enjoys his new talent, his hero suffers. With Durant in a slump without his talent, the OKC Thunder’s hopes of going to the playoffs begin to fade away. Being aware of the situation, Brian must now choose to keep his new found talent, or to find a way to return it to save his idol’s career and season. “If I had magically obtained the basketball skills of my hero, Kobe Bryant, no matter how awesome it would be to dominate high school, I could not let my idol or my team suffer,” senior Ben Tolsma said.

Book Review

J.K. Rowling: new book, new subject, same fanbase By KATHERINE SHELBY Co-Entertainment Editor The Casual Vacancy, J.K. Rowling’s new adult novel, hits bookstore shelves on Sept. 27. Harry Potter fans everywhere are squirming in anticipation. Rowling, the world famous author of the Harry Potter series, finally releases another book. Only this time, to many fans’

surprise, it has nothing to do with magic. According to Rowling’s official website, her new novel will be about an English town’s war over an election for the city council. There is no mention of magic or any of the Harry Potter characters in the book’s overview. Also, the book aims towards adults, unlike any of her other writings.

The question now, is whether or not Rowling will attract the same amount of mass hysteria and excitement over her new novel. The contrasting themes presented in The Casual Vacancy will, no doubt, come as a shock to many devout Harry Potter readers. “I was not as excited about the new book because nothing can compare to Harry Potter, especially if it is not about

magic,” senior Kristy Mesa said. While some Harry Potter fanatics may find large disappointment in J.K. Rowling’s new storyline, many others remain loyal fans to Rowling and her writing. “I think it will live up to my expectations because I expected it to be different. If she had tried to make the book the same as the Harry Potter

series, it most likely would not,” senior Sydney Young said. Along with Young, many plan to read The Casual Vacancy for Rowling’s unique writing regardless of whether it involves magic. “I enjoy J.K. Rowling’s writing style because over the years it has matured along with her readers,” Music Director David Prince said.
