Welcome to Queensland, Australia, and to Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Australasia 2024 (MRO AA 2024). This event is proudly supported by the Queensland Government.
Now in its third year, Aviation Week’s commercial aviation showcase continues to go from strength to strength, with the Queensland Government as Host Sponsor again in 2024.
It is no coincidence that Australia’s aviation industry was pioneered right here in Queensland.
Spanning an area of more than 1.7 million square kilometers – or nearly five times that of Japan –Queensland has landed a world-class aviation capability which connects its people and drives our economy sky-high.
Queensland’s aviation and MRO industries have evolved and diversified in response to local, regional, national and global markets.
The Queensland Government’s wide-ranging support reflects the diversity of these markets and its commitment to capitalising on new opportunities.
This support includes subsidised airfares for eligible residents of remote communities in Far North Queensland as well as regulated air services on long-distance, commercially challenging regional routes.
Long-standing government support for the industry was critical in the decisions by Qantas to establish its only Australian-based wide-body heavy maintenance facility in Brisbane and for Virgin Australia to locate its national headquarters here.
Investment programs have also supported smaller organisations like Alliance Airlines to establish a $60 million MRO facility in Rockhampton and for Jet Aviation to expand its heavy maintenance facility in Cairns, with both projects creating highly skilled regional jobs.
The government’s commitment to expanding the state’s defence capabilities has attracted several global companies to Queensland including Airbus Group, Boeing Defence Australia, GE Aviation, Northrup Grumman, Raytheon and others.
The aerospace industry faces unique challenges and an array of opportunities. The Queensland Government recognises the climate impact of air travel, particularly on our journey to net zero emissions by 2050, and is at the forefront of a renewable energy revolution.
Significant investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), an emerging industry, is seizing opportunities to transition Queensland towards a low-emissions world.
The Queensland Government is co-funding and supporting various projects, laying the groundwork for a robust domestic SAF industry across the state, including funding the establishment of a new processing facility in Central Queensland through the Industry Partnership Program.
The Aerospace Gateway to Industry Schools Program is an opportunity for 30 Queensland secondary schools to engage and partner with aerospace industries, tertiary education and training providers to inspire students to consider a skilled, diverse, and sustainable career in the aerospace industry. We welcome this year’s student cohort from Aviation Australia’s Certificate II program and invite students to learn more about the MRO industry.
Queensland’s diverse MRO capabilities and strategic location at the heart of the Asia-Pacific ensures it is ready to capitalise on the opportunities from the projected fleet growth in the region.
The Sunshine State boasts countless tourism attractions and experiences, from our stunning rural and regional hinterland hotspots to our breathtakingly beautiful beaches. We encourage you to take the time to explore.
The Queensland Government welcomes all delegates to Brisbane and wishes you a successful conference.

Aerospace is a priority industry for investment attraction, economic growth, creation of high-value jobs as well as future emissions reduction initiatives.
The Queensland Government’s vision for the aerospace industry is that by 2028, Queensland will be a leading centre in Australasia and Southeast Asia for defence and aerospace innovation. This includes training, niche manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) applications for military and civil markets.
The industry’s long-term strategies are supported by the recently refreshed Queensland 10-Year Roadmap and Action Plan.
The roadmap initiatives and objectives are reflective of the state’s diverse and ample aerospace industry capabilities in supporting both commercial and defence, be it large original equipment manufacturers, small outback operators, rotary and fixed wing MRO excellence, legacy aircraft, world class uncrewed systems research, development testing or production.
Australasia’s commercial aviation aftermarket MRO demand in 2024 is expected to require nearly $3 billion AUD ($2 billion US) from its operators, nearly two per cent of total global MRO demand.*
The roadmap recognises the strengths and significance of the MRO segment of Queensland’s aerospace industry and the opportunities from the growing MRO markets throughout Australasia.
Queensland also has a significant defence MRO presence, supporting operations and sustainment at Royal Australian Air Force bases at Amberley and Townsville, along with aircraft based at Army’s Aviation Centre near Oakey.
Queensland’s defence aerospace capability also includes the manufacture and MRO for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program.
The long-term strategies in the roadmap and the state’s strategic location in Asia-Pacific place Queensland in an excellent position to provide high-value niche services and capabilities including training, manufacturing, MRO, and UAS applications for military and civil markets.
The Queensland Government’s hosting of this event, along with supporting industry participation to showcase capabilities at other relevant industry events such as Avalon Airshow and MRO Asia-Pacific, is demonstration of its commitment to growing this priority industry.
Furthermore, its significant commitment towards aviation and aerospace workforce development is evident through the support of the Qantas Pilot Academy and Aviation Australia workforce development efforts.
Queensland’s aerospace sector includes world class research and development, technology innovation, flight testing, a mature uncrewed systems ecosystem and a nascent space sector.
Government and private sector investments in biofuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), is a notable example of the Queensland Government’s collaboration with industry to support emerging technologies critical to meet the aviation sector’s decarbonisation commitments.

Just over one hundred years ago, two biplanes in outback Queensland formed the first air fleet of Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services (Qantas), now one of the world’s safest, enduring and successful airlines.
With this rich legacy, a new era of aerospace is being progressed by our growing aviation and aerospace industry in Queensland.
To help strengthen this sector, the Queensland Government took action to prioritise the growth of the aerospace sector as a key driver of economic growth and job creation objectives via its Queensland Aerospace 10-Year Roadmap and Action Plan.
MRO is a major part of the aerospace industry in Queensland with a mix of mature and evolving capabilities, providing opportunities as well as challenges.
Queensland has a strong competitive advantage in the MRO sector with most of Australia’s aircraft engine overhaul businesses located in the state.
Queensland is home to Qantas’ only aircraft heavy engineering maintenance facility in Australia, servicing its Boeing 737s and Airbus 330s aircrafts. Half of the company’s Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner fleet is based in Brisbane.
Alliance Airlines’ $60 million aviation MRO facility at Rockhampton Airport will maintain and support the company’s growing fleet of aircraft and allow Alliance Airlines to onshore their major maintenance activities previously carried out overseas.
Queensland is home to several of the world’s top 10 aerospace companies and one-quarter of Australia’s aerospace companies, including leading defence companies Airbus, Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon along with other national leaders.
TAE Aerospace’s MRO facility in Ipswich is the only such capability in the Asia-Pacific region to service the F135 engines used in the F-35 fighter aircrafts.
Additionally, MRO capabilities provided by Asia Pacific Aerospace, Skytek, Heston MRO, Jet Aviation, Helimods, GE Aerospace, Pacific Turbine Brisbane, Avcro, Flying Colors Aviation and others service customers from commercial and defence sectors.
Brisbane is home to Boeing’s Queensland autonomous systems development program - its largest outside the United States. This initiative has led to the development of the multi-role collaborative combat drone, the MQ28A Ghost Bat. It is proposed that production orders of
MQ-28A will be assembled at the new aerospace and defence precinct at Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport in Queensland.
Whether through the development of innovative technologies such as uncrewed systems or hydrogenfueled electric aircraft, Queensland is at the forefront of emerging aviation technologies and the sustainment processes that will underpin their success.
The Queensland Government continues to play a supporting role for the growth of MRO capabilities through attracting investment, partnering with industry and business, and investing in and developing a highly skilled workforce.
Queensland also boasts significant aviation technical training capacity.
Established by the Queensland Government in 2001, Aviation Australia is a leading provider for avionics, engineering, production, pilot and cabin crew training across Australia. Aviation Australia has a national reach with campuses in Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne, Darwin and Perth as well as operating a college Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Aviation Australia has partnered with industry to launch the FAME (Female Aircraft Maintenance Engineer) program. FAME is an aviation industry-first initiative designed to support and nurture female aircraft maintenance engineers as they build their careers in a traditionally male-dominated field.
Aviation Australia is delivering the Aerospace Gateway to Industry Schools Program (AGISP) - an innovative engagement program to attract the future workforce to defence and civilian aviation sectors. AGISP is funded by the Queensland Government and supported by more than 30 aerospace industry partners, including global brands and industry leaders. AGISP is also running the STEM initiative at this MRO event, providing opportunities to students from participating schools to learn of career opportunities in the aviation industry.
Qantas has partnered with Aviation Australia to establish the Qantas Group Engineering Academy and train up to 300 trainees a year from 2025 - nominally 200 for the Qantas Group and 100 for the broader aviation industry.
Fittingly, in 2020 Qantas chose its historical home state of Queensland to host its Qantas Group Pilot Academy, which operates from Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.
In a state which has more than 1.85 million km² of airspace, the sky’s the limit for Queensland’s aerospace MRO sector.
