Within this consumer guide you will also find a host of new and innovative items released for the 2020 season. These include; the new incredibly lightweight Benchmark Lite Memory Foam range, which saw us introduce an industry first product to the market, with a full sleep system under 10kg in the shape of the Benchmark Lite Memory Foam System! Alongside this you will also find the new and improved Traction Pro rod range which saw us build upon the success and popularity of the original range by introducing a new range with a more lightweight and responsive 1k carbon weave. A feature that is often associated with rods of double the price. After witnessing the popularity of the HQ Dual Layer range, we made another addition to this outstanding range in the form of the exciting HQ Dual Layer Brolly System. Featuring our impressive 20,000mm dura-stop fabric and internal camo dual layer, the HQ Dual Layer Brolly System is the perfect choice for the dedicated brolly angler. This year we have worked tirelessly alongside our anglers across Europe to be able to offer this consumer guide in no less than five different languages. We are committed to ensuring Avid’s popularity continues to prosper throughout the UK and Europe in 2020 as it did in 2019. AN ACTION-PACKED YEAR

SIMON CROW

AN ACTION-

PACKED YEAR AVID’S SIMON CROW reflects on a carp-filled 2019. When I joined Avid last year I was asked to fish as far and wide as I could to help promote the brand. Travelling was something I was used to, having caught carp from plenty of destinations around the world. I was excited for the year ahead, and planned lots of adventures both home and away. I began 2019 with some syndicate fishing close to my home in Yorkshire, followed by a short trip to Orchid Lakes in Oxfordshire. I was fortunate to catch from both venues which made for a nice start to the year. The trip to Orchid was particularly enjoyable as the weather was very cold and it’s always nice to catch one from somewhere as hard-fished as there. As February drew to a close, I set off on my first adventure of the year when I was invited to spend ten days in California with rockstar carper Christian OldeWolbers (Fear factory guitarist). It was a great trip, fishing three different waters close to Los Angeles, albeit not in the sunny conditions the famous city is known for. The weather was unusually cold and wet, which made the bigger fish very elusive. Nevertheless it was a great place to catch carp from, with the best of the trip caught from Castaic Lower Lake, weighing upper-twenties. Like LA, the UK spring was a bit slow to get going. March was particularly cold and miserable. I spent much of the month on Acton’s Top Lake run by RH Fisheries, with not much to show for my efforts. I then started April with a blank on the ultra-hard Spitfire Pool in Norfolk. With only a dozen old Leney-strain carp to go at in a frost-filled trip, it was always going to be difficult. The legendary small water hadn’t done a carp since the previous autumn, but I did take something from the trip which was to work in my favour when I returned a couple of weeks later. The venue’s famous Wood Common had spent the entire seven days in the Back Bay close to a marginal bush. I hadn’t been able to fish that spot as it was covered by another angler. However, when I returned a week later, I knew exactly where I wanted to be, and on my second day at 9am I was attached to one of the most sought-after carp in England! To say I was over the moon when it rolled into my net is an understatement. Weighing in at a lake record 53lb 4oz, it was the perfect way to start the spring!

AN ACTION-PACKED YEAR

SIMON CROW

One of the UK’s most prized carp, the Wood Common at a lake record 53lb 4oz.

I was attached to one of the most sought-after carp in England! To say I was over the moon when it rolled into my net is an understatement. April continued to be kind. I put the slow start on Acton’s Top Lake behind me and went on to land some lovely fish from there before the season came to a close at the end of April. I left it late, with the venue’s Big Leather making an appearance on the last morning of the syndicate. This was a fish I set my sights on catching when I first joined the venue as it’s one of the oldest in there, having been stocked almost thirty years ago. From Acton, I went to the mighty Lac de Orient in central France where the Avid Stormshield range fitted in perfectly. I’ve fished the demanding venue a few times before, so I knew what to expect. It turned out to be a right gruel, with water levels very high and strong wind and rain hitting the lake for much of the ten days. It needed a ‘never give up’ attitude to get the rewards, with lots of time spent rowing and searching out the fish. There were times when I honestly

thought I had no chance of getting a result, until right at the end when my fortunes changed. The weather warmed up which in turn brought out the carp. They took some finding, but four fish and one lost in the last 36h was just what the doctor ordered. None of them were the monsters the lake is famous for, but with two of them weighing over forty-pounds I was more than made up. If ever a trip summed up the saying ‘effort equals reward’ it was this one. In June I made my first ever carp fishing trip to Germany. At the beginning of the year I was offered a place on one of the country’s most famous waters. This venue has produced some of the best carp in the world, including the legendary Mary which went on to break the world record for a common in the late Noughties. Today the lake continues to produce good fish, even though it is hard-fished and as tricky as any English water. I visited for ten days, the aim being to just catch my first German carp which I was lucky enough to do on my first night. The rest of the trip was as difficult as I expected, but on my penultimate day I pulled it out the bag with a cracking mirror of 50lb 10oz; the seventh country I’ve caught fifties from. The arrival of summer saw me back on Acton, focussing my efforts on the Bottom Lake more than the Top. With only a dozen or so original fish to go at, I managed five special ones, topped by a couple

of 36-pounders. I also bagged a few of the new stockies that are doing well, several of which are now closing in on the oldies. The most striking of these was the one they call the Princess of Acton which is covered in the most awesome apple slice scales. It certainly ranks as one of my favourite carp of the year. Another RH Fisheries venue I had a few trips to was the gorgeous Weston Park. I’ve flitted with this venue for several years now, but one fish which has always avoided me is a mirror known as Five Star. I’ve wanted this one for a while, having seen a photo of it on the wall in the Boathouse. At long last it made my album when I netted it during an overnighter. I also found success at Weston on the top during July and August. They are a real sucker for mixers and the highlight was the big common known as White Tips during a short afternoon trip. I was off on my travels again in September, visiting the River Lot in France to chase its wild carp. What a delight it was too, fishing off a boat with my mate Jim Lightfoot, not knowing what was in front of us. We caught steadily throughout the trip, with some absolute beasts up to 39lb. They were like torpedoes, and fought like them too; every bite being an absolute ripper followed by a proper tussle. It gave me the perfect opportunity to put the new Traction Pro 10ft rods to the test. Of all the fishing I did in 2019, this was by far my favourite. I loved every second of the ten days I spent on The Lot; it was a real adventure from start to finish. To round off a memorable year, I had a few trips to the big pit at Girton as well as Acton. The highlight of the autumn, however, was fishing

A hard-fighting torpedo from the River Lot in France.

The Queen of Acton, what a stunner!

When size was irrelevant; the Park Lake Linear.

a tiny park lake containing some very old Leney descendants. I saw a picture of a stunning linear from there a few years back, and for a couple of weeks in October I was addicted to catching it. I only fished it for a few hours here and there when I was passing. It was completely different to the type of carping I’d been doing most of the year as the lake was only half an acre in size. It was most enjoyable though; culminating in the one I most wanted weighing an impressive 27lb 12oz. Catching such a stunning fish was right up there with the Wood Common, proving that carp fishing is as much about making memories as it is chasing monsters. As I look back at 2019, it’s fair to say I’ve had an action-packed year. When you fish as much as I do and visit such a wide variety of venues, you need tackle that’s reliable and up to the job. Avid is known for its high quality, and I’ve used and abused its gear during the last twelve months at some of the most demanding carp waters on the planet. I’m pleased to say it hasn’t let me down once. Enjoy browsing this catalogue; this year’s range has some really awesome products! Crowy

THE REALITY CHECK

GREG ELLIS

THE REALITY CHECK AVID’S GREG ELLIS discusses the mind set needed to be a big carp angler. I’ve gained quite a lot of good press and dare I say it? Respect, over the years as a big carp angler in the UK. This is mainly due to the fact that most people can relate to me and follow my journey as I target some of the most pressured big carp circuits in the south of England. Why do I believe I am relatable to carp anglers across the country? Because, I’m a full-time worker in the construction trade just like many anglers are up and down the country. Fishing weekends only, I manage to catch good fish from some of the harder lakes we have here, while still holding down a full-time job. Obviously, social media doesn’t always give a true reflection of a person and often people don’t always see that my results doesn’t come easy and they require a lot of hard work, dedication and maximum effort. Not forgetting the sacrifice of living a normal life outside of carp fishing. What I mean by that is the settling down, finding a wife and making a family. You know? The normal things in everyday life. As I work Monday to Friday, I only get weekends to target these waters and being an avid gym goer during the week after work, I just simply haven’t got the time.

to someone who can do four nights or more a week and usually during the week too. My brain never shuts down and I need to be there as much as possible, but sometimes its impossible. It’s torture at times and you’re always planning ahead and praying that the chosen target doesn’t slip up when you’re not there. On a law of averages, it’s going to isn’t it? This is where it takes over your whole life and relationships and marriages fail. If I just went for the enjoyment of whatever came along, I could shut off and return a few weeks after a session, but I can’t. It’s a dangerous circle and I’m deep in it. That’s the harsh reality of the game I play and although I’ve achieved a lot over the years, I can’t help but think that maybe I’ve lost a lot more too. Other anglers respect what I have done and achieved over the years as they know all too well what’s being held on the line to achieve my goals. I took my fishing out of Essex about four years ago and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done, I’ve met some great people from all walks of life and gained a lot of new friends. The only problem with doing that was the travelling, more effort, but it’s worth it.

The big carp buzz is real, and I thrive on it. This is my drug and I’ve got a very

My style of angling is usually targeting one particular carp. More often than not, the biggest resident of the pit! The big carp buzz is real, and I thrive on it. This is my drug and I’ve got a very addictive personality, maybe I need to talk to Frank or something?

addictive personality, maybe I need to

The additive personality and the sacrifices that often comes alongside them is the difference between a carp angler and a big carp angler. A carp angler who goes for the pleasure and to catch carp of any size and shape that comes along, can shut off. They can leave the lake, go home and go back to work or do normal things with their families. Then return the following week, or even a few weeks later and they still have the buzz of being back on the bank when they do return and hopefully catch a few. A big carp angler who is targeting one fish in particular is the total opposite, and that’s what I am. I usually only get the Friday evening until Sunday afternoon to do this and I’m doing it alongside some of the best anglers in the country. These waters are more suited

I spent a few years in the Colne Valley, which was a two-hour drive on a Friday night after work, not forgetting the two to three-hour journey home from London to Essex during rush hour. I even pre baited at times and also done overnighters before work when it was game on for a bite. At the time I was a Roofer and some nights I literally had no sleep and would be packing up at 3:45am under the cover of darkness to drive home to get ready for another drive into London during the morning rush hour traffic, before spending the day ghosting across a roof looking like some sort of zombie from a horror movie. Keen and determined, or stupid? I’ll let you decide. These are the extreme measures I go to, to achieve what I set out to do. Yet, some people still

say I have it easy as I’m sponsored and supported by Mainline Baits and Avid Carp, green eyes I’m sure! I’ve worked hard over the years to achieve what I have already in the game. Having sponsorships is part of that, it’s part of people recognising your efforts and knowledge of Carp fishing. Most people I know tell me I deserve everything I get; I wonder if that’s because they can see the efforts in person and not just the successes displayed on social media? In 2018, I began filming my fishing and documenting my successes and failures in my YouTube blogs, ‘The Ellis Diary’. This gives a true insight into my life and my angling. Due to the nature of my angling and how my heads wired, carp fishing has definitely aging me too, I’m sure you will all agree, thirty-one, going on forty!

The XR range being put through its paces.

I’ve just recently changed my career as a Roofer and I’m now a Fire Sprinkler fitter across London. Once again, putting carp fishing first in my life. My boss is a keen angler and understands my ways so I have a bit of slack when it comes to Fridays and the odd day off here and there, which will benefit me massively at times, as long as the job I’m on is up to date and not behind. I’m self employed on price work so I can stay later during the week to get stuff done and earn my money for a half day on a Friday in return. Oh, the things carp can do to a man, they’re more controlling then some women! In 2019 I spent my first season on Burghfield, a lake in Reading which can sometimes be a two and a half to three-hour drive from my house in Essex which is long, but this is where I’ve always dreamed of angling. It’s dubbed by many as the UK’s ultimate challenge and with that, come the ultimate prize. The mighty Burghfield Common, the only carp in the country that holds that elite status these days and one I would love to meet in the near future. An old pristine common that goes over 60lb and lives in an absolute wild, maze like jungle of ninetysix acres. I’m most happy when I’m on the bigger pits and this pit is the ultimate. Rock hard mind you, but I love a good challenge. I have been

a consistent big carp catcher over the years landing some real good ones from big pits to small tricky waters, but Burghfield has put me in my place now. The ego landed last year, that’s for sure. I’m currently spending the winter on a different pit in the Lee Valley that’s seventy acres and I’ve been having some really good results. I’m new to the Avid team and this winter campaign was where I’ve been putting all their gear through its paces and its exceeded more than my expectations assumed. I’m really pleased with the new Traction Pro rods that have been doing some serious bending the last couple of months. Both ways, that’s casting and playing fish, one fish in particular that was a target. Being a new addition to the Avid team I thought I’d make this a sort of introduction to who I am and how I’ve gone about my angling over the years to get to this point. I’m just an average working angler who uses my free time at weekends to get out there and achieve my dreams, sometimes at the expense of a normal life but if I can do it, anyone can. Roll on the spring when the return to Burghfield arrives again. Let’s hope that I get to meet the ultimate prize. I may even semi retire if I do. I’ll find myself a nice woman, wife her and have some kids.

Who am I kidding? There’s always another target in the pipeline in this game, isn’t there! Be lucky, Greg Ellis

BEDS & CHAIRS Our popular extensive range of Bedchairs and Chairs has grown once again this year with a number of new additions. Most excitingly, the launch of our new ultra-lightweight Benchmark lite memory foam beds raised eyebrows when we announced that the benchmark lite system was the first full sleep system on the market under 10kg. The addition of a new lightweight magnesium alloy frame alongside our signature ultra-comfy memory foam mattress has seen the best of both, lightweight and comfort come together to create the perfect bed for the modern-day mobile angler. Our standard Benchmark Memory Foam beds and systems are still flying off the shelves and gaining more popularity by the day! There really is no competition to the ultra-comfy benchmark memory foam mattress when it comes to bankside comfort. There have been two new additions under the ascent label. The new Ascent Recliner Bed has superseded our traditional Road Trip Bedchair. Whilst the new ascent day chair has replaced our original day chair. 2020 will also see the launch of the new Benchmark Memory Foam recliner chair which really is the ultimate in bankside comfort.

A YEAR OF TWO HALVES

JOSH BENNETT

A YEAR OF TWO HALVES From the hospital bed, to a Benchmark. JOSH BENNETT discusses his year of two halves including two impressive 80lb braces. In the late summer and autumn of 2019 I had a little bit more fishing time on my hands than I usually would have. Having been off work after a vehicle accident, I was finally back on my feet and more than ready to do some angling once again. The Carp Society is an integral part of the British carp angling community and having been established in 1981, it has survived the tests that time has thrown at it. Farriers Lake is the Society’s syndicate venue, of which I am a member and its 32 acres stretch across the Gloucestershire countryside in the heart of the Cotswold water park. Here, within its shallow depths, weed is abundant and large trees loom along jutted points, creating bays housing snags and reed-fringed margins. The lake’s inhabitants have indeed grown to a healthy size and their population predominantly consists of the common strain of king carp. Being home to an estimated 100150 fish, the lake can be tricky at times and even when the carp do oblige, the weed can ensure a tense battle ensues. With the kind invitation from the Carp Society that my dad could accompany me on my travels, we both set off only 16 weeks after I had been knocking on the pearly gates in the sky. Thankfully I was refused entry, most probably because I should have been knocking at the fiery ones a few floors down, but regardless I was grateful to be alive and more than happy, if a little sore, to be fishing again.

That very first session back to Farriers brought with it a whole host of emotions. Relief, joy and just an appreciation of being back by the water again. The lake had fished well through the summer, some of the more consistent anglers catching good hits of the very large carp that inhabited the lake. I was eager to get going again and planned to meet dad at the gates. As it transpired dad was held up a little in traffic, so while I arrived a short time before him, it meant I could

watch the water until he arrived to help set things up. I was still unable to walk properly, and just getting gear to the swim would be a challenge. Luckily a good friend John was just packing down and had caught a few. He was also vacating one of my favourite swims and so with the lake being busy, it would have been rude not to wouldn’t it? John being the man he is even pushed my gear the short 50 metres or so from the nearest drop off bay, what a star. Now ensconced in the swim, I perused the water for a short time before walking round to open the gate for dad. We travelled back to the peg and I had informed him of what I had seen, which on reflection was very little. The sun was rising into a beautiful August morning and although the rods were despatched to their respective spots with relative ease, the fish didn’t arrive until much, much later that day. As we supped a tea on dusk, a number of fish slid through the surface film, sending silent rings back towards us on the bank. I have for as long as I remember fished from a brolly and sitting in the wide, open doorway of the ascent the following morning, I was slightly disappointed with no fish to show for my efforts. Knowing John had caught overnight meant that as the morning grew on, my confidence was decreasing. At 11am I finally got a steady, yet persistent take that took us both by surprise. Immediately I held the fish firm so as to try and keep it from finding the vast weed beds behind the spot. The fish bore hard and with it the clutch that was wound tight begrudgingly gave line. Maybe it was my lack of recent fishing or just bad luck, but

either way the fish found the sanctuary of the weed. After 10 minutes of tugging and thinking about calling for the boat, the fish kicked hard and the hook pulled. I was disappointed but in the grand scheme of things, it was just a lost fish, I could have lost a lot more just a few weeks prior and context was brought to the situation. With the rod replaced we sat and schemed of how to reap revenge on the carp, many of which were now present in front of the swim due to its shallow depth and the glorious summer sun we were experiencing. Once more rods were replaced and my usual tactics deployed. The lake has a leader ban and as a result the outline rig tubing and a simple lead clip set up has been my par set up. I usually blob a few pieces of putty along the line, however the unique camouflage on all of Avid’s outline end tackle, provides excellent concealment over any lakebed. I use a strong 15lb line; namely the trapline in the respective breaking strain and finally a slip D set up of around 7 inches, incorporating the CRV hooks in a barbless (adhering to the rule) size 4. Thankfully the following morning the same rod produced another take and I was so pleased to finally land a fish for my efforts. With me having told my dad about so many big carp within the lake, it was sod’s law that this one turned out to be 18lb! Either way we were off the mark and would be able to return soon where sod and his laws had a few plans for us. The lake continued to fish well, although mainly in two areas where the weed was at its busiest. The lake was evidently busy and upon our

return we again found the lake rammed with anglers. Once more the first night passed without action, however this was expected due to not being able to get in to one of the two areas fish were obviously frequenting. The second night I swiftly moved round to swim 4; well dad swiftly moved round whilst I hobbled behind! Knowing the spots, both rods were quickly settled on to their respective rests and I sat back to await any action. The following morning fish moved into the area and eventually the right-hander lifted slowly, but purposefully into a healthy take. Once again the weed grabbed at the line, but with a little practice from the week before, I coaxed a 28lb mirror into the waiting net. The fish looked beautiful in the morning sunlight and it was another success that brought with it smiles and laughter. During that morning however, we had seen a lot of fish down the opposite end, showing with out any due care within the confines of a thick weed bed. Although we’d been successful, it was obvious where the majority of the stock were and we made our way home, intent on returning to that end of the pit the following session. That end of the pit was obviously the furthest walk and by this point I was beginning to walk a little better. That session I remember pushing the barrow for the first time and it didn’t feel too bad, even if it did take a little longer than it would normally have. I rested the gear down in peg 19 and although the entire bank to my left was taken, this was where the fish were showing and being caught from. Simply, I had to fish as close as I could with the swims available to me. There was also every chance of a move in the morning. One thing I had done the week before was walk round with a leading rod and thankfully, had found a few spots in this swim. Lining up the far bank markers and reminding myself of the distances marked on my phone, it didn’t take too much disturbance to once again be sat, content behind two rods. The night was quiet in regards to activity on my rods, however the fish again put on an aerial display further out in the pit. The crashes echoed along the surrounding foliage and it was hard to see exactly where they were showing. I even remember hearing a couple crash out in the lake behind me! As the light gradually increased so did my attention to the water. We had both been up since daybreak and supped at the

warmth of a tea. Fish after fish showed at distance and it was obvious we needed to move if we were able. Late that afternoon peg 15 became available and it was a case of just getting round there. I got the rods out just into evening and just hoped the fish would stay where they had showed so happily just hours before. At 11pm we received the answer in the shape of a beautifully framed common. At 35lb it was finally one of the better stamp I had hoped to show dad whilst he accompanied me. The action continued in the morning and I managed another scraper twenty as the light rose, just prior to us having to head for home.

I was gaining confidence again now. I had obviously been away from the lake for some time and I felt that we were getting back in tune with the place. Glad to be back!

At 35lb it was finally one of the better stamp.

The bait, rigs and my approach all seemed to work, as long as I could get in to the swims that could afford me access to where the fish were located. The gear was certainly helping with this and I had whittled my tackle down to just a rod bag, bucket, tackle bag and bedchair along with the brolly and barrow. My mobility was difficult, but that wasn’t going to stop me being proactive.

Thankfully, the fish were soon to begin being a little more nomadic and get up to their usual tricks of getting here there and everywhere. I continued catching steadily during my trips and I was now consistently fishing two days a week. As previously stated I have never been able to do this, but by fishing around the days my wife worked, looking after my boy and physiotherapy, doctors appointments and the like, I was able to really keep in touch with the fishes movements. I have to admit that many of the anglers on the lake also gave me some invaluable information and the ethos on Farriers is very much one of friendship and sharing of information between anglers, it really is a very enjoyable place to angle. This particular trip my dad had finished fishing elsewhere and joined me for an overnight session at the lake. It was once again very busy and a total of 14 anglers were plotted up in their respective swims around the lake. Peg 1 suddenly looked very inviting, not only as it was only yards inside the gate, but also because a number of fish had decided to call it home for the evening. Considerable amounts to catch the attention were happily lazing in the early autumnal sunshine and we quickly decided that here would be as good a place as any. I knew of a spot at around 60 yards, however

64

avidcarp.com

the fish were noticeably closer than this and by donning the polaroid’s and finding a suitable perch, I was able to locate small gravel holes in the weed. Occasionally, a black shape would drift effortlessly over the shades of yellow and golden gravel, just to get the heart ticking that bit quicker. A short cast of just over 40 yards saw the lead land perfectly on the near side of a gravel spot. Here we had noticed that each time the fish entered or exited the bay to my right they would drift over this exact area, using it as a patrol route. I left the tubing off of this rod; my reasoning being that fishing the near side of the weed could lift the line up off the bottom and expose the tubing. By fishing naked and leaving things slack, I hoped the heavy trapline would be less conspicuous if it were to be laid up wrong at all. As darkness fell the fish became very active, crashing loudly in the small bay. Some of the fish sounded heavy as they left and re-entered the water and it was no surprise that confidence was high between the both of us. At just after midnight the first fish made its mistake on the short rod. It pulled hard through the weed and the typical grating feeling and jagged lunges of the rod tip left me in no dispute that the culprit knew what it was doing. As a result, we came to a mutual agreement that I would simply allow him or her to find the biggest weed bed it could, then drag the entire thing and fish into the outstretched arms of dad’s awaiting net. Having been out in the waders to gather the fish, he returned to dry land and motioned that it was a good fish. At 37lb 4oz it was a long looking common and a real cracker for such a short trip, having come just hours after the rod had been placed. With the pictures complete and the fish returned the rod was quickly replaced with a new rig. All of the captures had come using small, balanced baits. I did this by presenting half a critical and half a pop up sandwiched together. This allowed the size 4 to delicately settle on the lakebed and do so with the point ‘cocked’ in a position where I hoped it could catch hold of the bottom lip. So far, all of the holds bar the first one lost to the weed had been pretty solid since my return.

A YEAR OF TWO HALVES

JOSH BENNETT

With great surprise that same rod then signalled a further take just two hours later and once again I was up and being abused by a powerful fish. The fish once again found the refuge of the weed relatively quickly and slowly but surely ground to a halt. Again, with a little persuasion the fish knocked its head and slowly came to the waiting net. This time amongst the weed, dad’s eyes told me it was another lump and significantly bigger than the last. It was highly likely we had a forty-pound common to show for our nights work! Low and behold the scales read 43lb 12oz and an 80lb+ brace of commons gave us a night to remember. The pictures were completed and I watched as dad cradled the sling in the edge. It did look a large fish in the water, indeed it was a large fish and it powered off strongly. With celebratory brews in hand, we waited for dawn and smiled inherently at the memories of those two carp. The mad thing with Farriers is that it’s almost normal to have a brace like that and we wondered if our luck could get any better.

The following sessions were filled with

37lb Long Common.

further excitement and success. I had now managed my first night on my own, catching 5 fish within a 12-hour window up to 38lb and then managed a further night the following week. This resulted in a three fish catch topped by a wellframed common of 41lb exactly. Everything was working perfectly and it was such fun fishing for huge carp when you knew you had got the tactics and location correct. It was always more fun when dad was around as we could talk into the night about anything bar the fishing usually. Football, cars, motorcycles, you name it we’d talk about it, even Brexit came up a few times!! However, one night whilst sat with dad we were rudely awoken by not one, but two fish and the excitement and childish giggling it brought

about was something I will cherish forever. The lake had fished hard for recent times and the majority of fish were yet again being caught along the south bank, namely pegs 15 and 17. I’d been having a lot of my success from the opposite end, mainly because the lake was so busy. I was happy dropping back in to swim 23 that controlled a large section of water on a jutted point and looked across to pegs 1 to 4. I was essentially fishing the back end of water I had been fishing from peg 4 and with say only four to five rod lengths between the spots, I was confident that the night or early morning feeding spells may prompt a carp to trip up. The first take came late at night, I can’t remember exactly what time, but I imagine it was in the early hours. In fact, I know it was after

At 43lb 12oz it was the second part of an incredible 80lb brace.

midnight as I had made the comment to dad that the peg as of late, had rarely done fish outside the hours of midnight to midday. The fish actually came in very easily and initially I thought it was a tench. Once again dad donned the waders and a large fish simply zig zagged its way the entire 70 yards to the waiting net. Happily giggling once more, the back strength was tested as I lifted the fish onto the mat. Dad hoisted the scales and at 41lb 4oz, she behaved impeccably for the camera and was soon released. Again we had achieved, however the rod was repositioned and that inherent need for more was soon gripping us again, as well as the warmth of another celebratory cup of tea. Excitement and anxiousness kept me awake for most of the morning and it was just beginning to get light when I perched on the side of dad’s bed to meet him with another brew. We sat for a short while before being shocked at a single bleep on the right hand buzzer. The rod, knowing it was being stared at, simply developed into a sweet curve and allowed the alarm to call once more. Again I felt this fish may have actually been a tench, such was its disinterest in fighting, but very quickly it reassured me it was a carp as it rolled into the mesh not 2 minutes after picking up the hook bait. I simply coaxed it in like a dog on a lead and yet again we stared down from the swim’s platform. There sat patiently in the net was sat another, evidently large fish. It felt heavier than the first and it was heavier at 43lb 8oz.

This time around a brace of commons totalling nearly 85lb had been landed in just a few short hours.

What a wonderful place. Some early morning pictures were completed and with light being so close, most would have held the fish for a short time. However, the rules state that fish should be returned as soon as possible and rightly so. A beaming smile greeted most people that day and many a congratulations was had after such a brilliant nights angling. The morning and with it the session, ended well too with a small common being hooked around 10.30am. I have since returned from my most recent session alone, where a 31lb common was caught from the same swim having completed an overnight session and that pretty much brings us up to speed. I am back to work now and as you read this, still planning the remainder of my autumn and upcoming winter campaigns. I like to think I’m an honest person, especially so in my profession, regardless of how many suggest one is akin to a nine bob note! As a result I can say without any doubt that my approach has been a large part of the success I’ve experienced. Time has of course seen me land more carp than I would have previously. An increase in time will only ever allow fish to be in front of you longer than they would have if you were not there of course. However, the outline end tackle was a completely eye opening experience when first putting it out into the pond. I put my prior set up into the edge and then placed the outline set up next to it. Quite simply I find it hard to see any other end tackle that can blend into any lakebed as well as this, bar fluorocarbon or a clear leader. With leaders banned on many waters these days, the tubing and matching lead clip and sleeve simply melted away out of sight and my eyes were one of the few things I didn’t break in the accident!

Overnighter success!

By minimising the gear, it not only helped to move as and when required, but its allowed me to repair both physically and mentally. The luggage is both light and comfortable and after what has been a truly horrific year from an automotive point of view, my angling hasn’t suffered because my gear couldn’t provide for me when I was injured. On the contrary, it has helped return me to a level of fitness only months ago I thought I might never have. It mind sound a little dramatic, but I genuinely believe it to be so and can now look forward as well as back with some positivity. The lake has been kind yes, but you have to work for everything in life, whether that be catching a carp or learning how to walk again. Be lucky and take care of you and yours. Josh Bennett

STORMSHIELD LUGGAGE You may have seen in the round-up of my season’s fishing that I used the Stormshield luggage range when I visited the mighty Lac D’Orient in central France last spring. This venue is widely regarded as the lake to retire on as everything you do on the Orient is hard work. There’s 6000 acres of fluctuating water levels, a low-stock of carp, restricted bank space, lots of rules, but it’s the weather and conditions on the bank that take their toll on you the most. You spend lots of time in a boat at this place, either moving swim, baiting up or looking for fish. The water level is that high in the spring, you also fish out of the boat, which isn’t the easiest thing to do. As you can imagine, there’s no escaping the water on places like this. No matter how hard you try to cover up your sleeping bag, clothes and other essentials, when it rains while moving swim, your gear ends up getting a soaking. It’s either that or it gets covered in the clay that most of these lakes are based on. This is where the Stormshield luggage comes in really handy. Made from an ultra-tough 100% waterproof fabric, every item in the range is perfect for this kind of fishing. Utilising a roll-top design, it not only keeps water at bay but also traps air inside making each item float should it go overboard. The range includes a large carryall, rucksack, two sizes of swag and cooler bags, plus a bedchair bag. Another neat addition is the net and sling bag which isn’t just suitable for big waters, but for any angler who wishes to stop wet nets and slings from stinking out the car! In fact the whole range of Stormshield luggage is suited for all kinds of carping, which is why it’s my number one choice wherever I go. Crowy

TOP TIPS

JOHN FLEWIN

CARP CARE TOP TIPS

JOHN FLEWIN discusses how to get your perfect trophy shot whilst remaining calm and collected to ensure the safety of your catch. So…. You’ve waited for this moment for days… finally an absolute chunk is in the net, the one you have been waiting for. Now comes the moment to take a breath and get ready for that all-important catch picture. We have all been in this position and without proper planning and ultimate fish care the next few minutes can be an absolute nightmare. However, if you set out your kit correctly, you’re about to get the shots you need, and the fish will remain safe and comfortable and you can embrace your success fully. First of all, I always carry two of the super lightweight Safeguard Landing Nets with me wherever I go. Often people comment, “you must be feeling lucky”. However, there is a good reason behind this. It’s always important to get the rod back out as quick as possible after you have been lucky enough to land one. The last thing I want to be doing is rushing about, lifting the fish from the water in an unsafe manor and potentially damaging a fish in the process. Therefore, having a second landing net allows you to secure the fish in the net but still have a spare net ready if you are extremely lucky enough to catch another before photographing the first. Alternatively, a recovery sling can be used for short term retaining, I just prefer to not have to focus on transferring a fish from the net to a sling before having the chance to reset my trap. I always tend to use a quick-change swivel set up, whether that be through one of our Outline QC leads clips or simply a QC swivel on a solid bag or rotary style set up. This allows me to unclip the rig from the leader, attach another rig and get the rod back to the spot in superquick time. This is also safer for the fish as the rod is removed from the situation and there can be no tension from the rod to the fish. Now that that’s all out of the way and the fish is sat in a good depth of water clear from obstructions and the rod has been recast, I can now start to get my kit ready on the bank. Now over the years I have learned to start thinking about the photo set up whilst I’m fishing. This means that if the situation occurs, I already know where I am going to take my pictures which is safe for the fish as well as making a good backdrop for that all-important shot.

104

avidcarp.com

I start by setting my Captive Carp Cot up with a backdrop I fancy. Whether it be some cool looking shrubbery or a wide-open path to create depth its totally up to you. Personally, when fishing a campaign on a water, I like a variation of shots through the year to stop my catch shots all looking the same. So, make sure you’re not only keeping your eyes peeled for signs of carp around the lake, but also for some cool backdrops for your catch pictures. As soon as I am happy with my mats position, I ensure that it is pegged down using the loops so I know that nothing can cause the mat to move with the fish inside. Then I always position a large bucket of water and a quality carp care kit to the side of the mat, so everything it to hand once the fish is on the bank. Once that’s all sorted its time to get the camera kit ready. Now I won’t go into depth in regard to camera settings and technical talk, there is a host of information online for you to read up on if you are interested in improving the image quality of your catch pictures. The camera I use has a flip screen so I can see my “mock set up “before I press the trigger. Get the picture framed up ensuring there are no items in the shots that you don’t want in your pictures. I always tend to frame self takes a little further back than you would if you were personally taking the shot for someone in order to allow me to crop the image if I need to. Remember, you can always crop but you can’t always add to a picture.

Flip-around cameras screens makes framing shots easy.

TOP TIPS

JOHN FLEWIN I set up my shots by positioning an item (Often my Lok Down Bucket Stand) where I would be knelt holding the fish, which allows me to manually focus on the area. If you aren’t familiar to shooting in manual, auto focus will often do the job. I set the camera on an intervalometer setting, If your DLSR doesn’t have these settings within the camera, you can pick one up online for relatively cheap. An intervalometer will allow you to set the camera to take shots continually until you stop it, with specific gaps between shots allowing you to move and adjust if needed. Now that I am all prepared and have everything to hand, it’s time to get the fish out of the water and get those all-important catch shots. This is often the time where most damage happens to a fish, so always be aware of the next few simple steps. Now irrespective of the size of the fish I’m angling for I always take a Stormshield Recovery Sling XL with me to ensure that the fish will always have enough room, even if I am lucky enough to catch a giant. Ensure that the sling is thoroughly wet before you zero your scales or indeed before it comes into contact with the fish itself. The beauty with the Avid ones is that they have a full super soft mesh construction that is ultra-safe for the fish. I make sure that I take the sling to the fish not the other way around and if this entails putting on the waders and getting in then so be it. Make sure the sling is fully open to allow you to break the net down and slide the fish into the sling in one motion. Once the fish is in the sling, zip up the retainer making sure that all fins and tails are well clear, Check the fins are sitting flush to the fish’s body and the rig is not tangled up in the mesh of the net before getting ready to lift the fish from the water. If you have had to get into the water in your waders. Make sure that you have a safe way of getting out of the water with the fish to prevent any slips which will not only cause damage to the fish but you also.

Fish friendly retaining sling.

Once on the mat, I am then able to remove the fish from the net leaving the fish only in the sling, ready to weigh. Once weighed, it’s time to

Fully prepared ready to photograph the fish.

Day light self-take.

106

avidcarp.com

TOP TIPS

JOHN FLEWIN get ready for the pictures. Ensuring the fish is safe and is constantly wet, I simply lean over and trigger the camera to start taking pictures. When I am happy with the number of images taken, Its time to get the fish back to the water. Once again ensuring that the fish’s fins are safe against its body and its tail away from any zips, the fish can be lifted and taken back to the water safely. Nine times out of ten, the fish will charge off back to the sanctuary of the depths. However, sometimes they may need a minute to recover. Take your time, oxygenate the water around the fish if needed by pouring water onto the surface of the water above the fish and the fish will soon be on its way. A pretty simple process in practice if you are prepared. Now I hear you all saying, “what about at night”. well for me nothing changes regards the safety aspect its just a few set up changes. My background choice for self takes at night, is more about finding areas that reflect light, bushes walls etc. I set up a LED style light on a 12” Lok Down bankstick at 45 degrees to the fish allowing me to illuminate the shot enough for the flash gun and focus of the camera to work correctly. If you want to get the best from your shots, using multiple flash guns would work best. However, often I find that using my bivvy style light to illuminate the space between my back and the backdrop is enough to cast light into the potential shadows that would be cast by the flash gun.

That’s it really. Always remember that the fish safety is paramount and comes before getting the catch picture. Another key tip which has come from this is to always remember that preparation prevents poor performance, which is something I use not only when setting my catch pictures up but throughout my wider angling. Avid have always been known for their impressive carp care range. Their current carp care offering supplies every element required for a safe set up. Get out there and apply those tips to your catch shots and I’m sure you will see an improvement! John Flewin

Building on the success of the original range of Traction rods, we have been able to fully upgrade the original 3k carbon blank to a new lighter and more responsive 1k carbon weave blank for our new Traction Pro rod range, an impressive feature that is often associated with rods double the price! Over the years we have constantly been asked to produce a more powerful shorter rod, for those anglers still wanting the benefits of a shorter rod but requiring more power through the blank to cast solid bags and drop large leads from boats. In response to these demands, we have introduced a 10ft 3.5lb model to the new Traction Pro rod range. We have introduced two new impressive nets to our range, for 2020. Our new Safeguard Landing Nets feature both style and functionality. Lightweight carbon throughout the pole and arms alongside an easy to construct CNC Machined spreader block make the Safeguard Landing Extremely easy to use when landing fish. Our soft touch unique fish camo mesh also adds an element of style to the net. Our breach landing nets offer exceptional value for money. The Curvex range of carp rods have been specifically designed with the European angler in mind. The actions on all the rods in the range are very parabolic, which is ideal for playing fish from a boat. We have worked closely with our team of consultants in Europe and the UK to bring you a comprehensive range of rods that will not only perform better when fishing from a boat, but actually help you to control and land fish much easier.

Ellis used the rods to great success, even fishing snaggy areas. Due to the soft parabolic action of the Curvex rods, you can really bend into a fish without the fear of pulling hooks.

Fishing from a boat can be difficult at the best of times, so why not make things as easy as possible with the help of the Curvex rods. During the testing process, we also asked Avid consultant Ellis Brazier to use the Curvex rods for a full winter. Ellis likes to use light lines and very small hooks for his winter fishing, which would put the Curvex to the ultimate test.

THE LEARNING CURVE

DYLAN WALLIS

THE

LEARNING CURVE

DYLAN WALLIS describes how he was able to apply knowledge taken from his experience of fishing for Juniour Carp Team England, to his own personal English fishing. Back In October 2018 I was lucky enough to get a call-up to represent England in the Junior World Carp Classic held on Lago di Scandarello in central Italy. Having no prior knowledge of the venue, I set about gathering as much information regarding the lake as I could. Extensive internet searches through both, English and Italian websites and forums, alongside countless hours hovering over the lake on google earth in the search for some obvious features gave me a small insight of what to expect when we arrived. Lucky enough, I was able to call on the knowledge of some other Avid sponsored anglers based in Italy who were kind enough to also give me some additional information. Armed with hours of research and a head full of preconceived ideas of how the event would go, it was soon time to head over to Italy. We arrived at the lake 2 days early to participate in the build-up and opening ceremony of the event, which included a flag procession through local town, multiple visits to local churches and a questionable speech from the local town Mayor, all the while I was itching to get started. During the build-up of the event we were able to gather more information, which all pointed us to one end of the lake which commanded a section of water which went down to around 20ft. Of course, the draw went well, as they always do! Unfortunately, but hardly surprising, we drew second from last and ended at the complete opposite end of the lake to where we had been tipped off that the fish were holding up, in the deepest part of the lake. At this stage, all of the hours of planning were torn up and thrown out of the window. Match draws are always an intense part of fishing competitions, often with a high percentage of your potential success relying on them I have to admit we began the match with our heads down. However, not wanting to dwell on the events of the draw I knew that me and my partner Finley had to do our best, playing to our combined strengths in order to be successful. I had to fish what was in front of me and use watercraft to work things out. When the hooter signified the start of the competition, we both set out mapping the lake in front of us, looking for features to fish too. were shocked at the

148

depth of water just a couple rod lengths out from the bank. The lake is a flooded valley with very steep banks. Below the waterline there are a host of issues such as thick rooted tree stumps and boulders, so we knew that it was vitally important to find clear areas where we could safely present our rigs. Whilst leading about, we timed the lead from the moment of impact, all the way to the lakebed and we were astonished when it took, what felt like a lifetime to hit a depth of almost 80ft! Neither of us had fished in water this deep before, but we both agreed that due to the numbers of carp showing in the upper layers, that fishing In the deep water as just not an option. My approach to this situation consisted of finding some shallow features where we could present baits close to fish that would likely be in the upper layers. After over an hour of relentless feature finding, I finally managed to find a small gravel bar at a reasonable depth of 22ft. The bar ran adjacent to the bank at around 110 yards. My Extremity rods were more than capable of fishing at that distance accurately. Bait wise, we opted to use a mix of chopped 15mm and 18mm boilies, which we chopped to avoid any of them rolling down the bar into the deeper water. We also used a mix of large particles including maize, red maize and cracked maples. We knew that the mix had to be heavy enough to drop quickly through the water column and not be taken away with the drift of the under tow. A great tip for anyone wanting to fish accurately in deep water! Various dense liquids were added to not only help boost the mix but also give it some extra weight allowing our mix to fall quicker and more accurate to the small specific area we had found.

Match draws are always an intense part of fishing competitions, often with a high percentage of your potential success relying on them I have to admit we began the match with our heads own.

THE LEARNING CURVE

DYLAN WALLIS

Even with the best laid plans and preparation, carp fishing can deliver blanks. After numerous days of working hard to try and entice fish into the area, we did just that. The event was eventually won by the Italians with 3 fish. They were lucky enough to draw the area that was our first choice at the complete opposite end of the lake in shallower water. As an experience for a young angler like myself, the event was great, and I have applied much of what I learnt to my English during the past twelve months. In particular, accurate fishing at range. I often hear many people claiming to be able to cast to the moon and back, however fishing accurately at over 100 yards to small tightly baited areas, consistently regardless of conditions, is what I believe to be important to the style of angling in the UK. My approach to fishing in the UK hasn’t really changed too much during the past few years. I’ve fished many different types of venues from, day tickets to club waters and syndicates. My initial approach of fishing tightly baited areas has served me well this year.

Memories.

At the start of May 2019, I joined a beautiful reservoir in north Devon; a long thin lake of about 8 acres. I was initially attracted to this venue due to its low stock of English heritage fish, which were all extremely picture worthy. At the car park end was a dam wall with a depth of roughly 25ft, with the opposite end shallowing up to about 2ft with an abundance of Lily pads. The two ends of the reservoir were heavily fished with the middle sections being less popular. My first session was planned to try and scope the water out. Constant walking and watching for signs of fish in an attempt to get a better understanding of their movements. If I’m brutally honest I did struggle to find the fish for the first 24 hours, so just before dark I set up in a swim halfway up the lake, so I could see the vast majority of the water from my brolly. Both rods were deployed to the far side where there was an obvious small clean, slightly deeper area which I spotted from the opposite bank earlier that day.

This spot had most certainly been created by the carp. I baited lightly but accurately over the top of the rods before retiring to the comforts of my Benchmark, there was an aery atmosphere that night and I couldn’t help but think about a number of stories about the lake and the strange events and people that sometimes walk its banks; I recall bailiff Dave telling me that he woke up one morning to some clanging sounds and flashing coming from the dam wall. Describing a scene from a medieval tale, he said that he has seen people dressed as knights in full metal armour having a sword fight just as the sun was coming up. I couldn’t stop laughing when I heard this story and was a little anxious to what I might wake up to the next morning. As the heat from the rising sun seeped deeper into the cover of my brolly, ’bream fatigued’, blurry eyed and yawning my head off I woke to a strange sound in the distance. I thought I could hear singing and clanging of metal coming from down the path from the top of the hill. Giving my head a wobble, and turning the kettle on, I thought nothing more of it until I could hear it was getting closer and closer, suddenly a group of school children on an adventure day popped their heads out from the trees wielding pots and pans for their school trip and bush craft lesson on the dam wall. Not quite the sword wielding weirdo’s I had been warned about. After all the loud commotion and the odd stick and stone kindly being thrown in my swim by the kids, I thought although I had been able to accurately replace both rods on the spot during the night, that my chance of catching had gone for the session.

smaller baits when fishing on small tight areas to keep the fish feeding heavily on the spot. Surprisingly, 5 minutes after the commotion from the school kids. The bobbin dropped gradually as the line slackened and I was finally into my first carp on the new water. The fish stayed very low in the water and did a good job of picking up as much Canadian pond weed as it physically could. In reality it actually helped me in this situation because it covered the carp’s eyes and therefore didn’t fight too hard after it came up the shelf And into the margin. One big scoop of the net and I had landed my first carp from the new lake and my first carp from Devon. Looking back at it now it was such a relieving moment and the first thing I did was phone my Dad because we both knew it was going to be a challenge this lake. The fish weighed 24lb and was a fish they called “the little D scale”- just the type of carp I wanted to catch from this lake. For many readings this, a 24lb carp may not seem a big carp to have moulded this article around and it isn’t near the biggest fish I have caught this year. However, what I thought it did show was how I have been able to apply aspects of what I learnt during the competition into my English fishing. The tightly baited accurate angling which I have focused on perfecting during the past 12 months is always a go to method for me on any new lake I fish. It doesn’t always work and often I have to alter my approach to best suit a specific lake, however having the confidence in an approach is extremely important to your angling! Accuracy is a tool which everyone is capable of and can use use to better their angling! Dylan Wallis

Submerged trees littered the bank behind the drop off on the far side where my left-hand rod was placed. For this reason, I have decided to fish a tight line with a locked-up clutch as well as a long 20lb Outline Leader to avoid cuts offs on the opposite bank snags and the marginal shelf. My rig of choice was the German rig comprising of the 25lb captive coated hooklink alongside a single 12mm wafter. I often use 2020 CONSUMER GUIDE

CONFIDENCE IS KEY

SPENCER HUMBLE

CONFIDENCE IS KEY

SPENCER HUMBLE discusses the way you can maintain the perfect balance whilst still filling your photo albums. In this day and age many of todays well known anglers are full time, or certainly very close to it. In carp angling there is no substitute for time, no matter what anybody says. Of course we can all learn from these very experienced anglers, however, the everyday angler will look at these guys results and not be able to fully associate with them. Well I am here to tell you that you can maintain the balance, have a wonderful family life, good career and still get yourself an album full of carp captures to remember. I work a sixty hour week, have a family to look after, a mortgage to pay and a life outside of fishing to maximise. Yet still i enjoy success in fishing or enough to keep me happy anyway. So how do you possibly compete with those with so much spare time? The answer is to keep things simple, use tackle and bait that you have confidence in and just get out there and do it. Confidence is the key to success in most things in life and fishing is no different. Avid Carp produce tackle that is built to last, is reliable and dependable. Pretty much everything I use is made by Avid and nothing has let me down. From bivvy and bed, to banksticks and buzzer bars, line, end tackle and landing net. It is really your end tackle that is crucial though, yes we all like the best shiny tackle we can get but, if you are on a budget then it is the bit on the end that makes the difference. Avid’s outline range of components will not let you down. In the last year I have only really used two rig arrangements, the famous Ronnie Rig and the not quite so well known German rig. These two rigs cover fishing with bottom baits, pop ups, wafters and snowman set ups. They can be used with anything from boilies to tiger nuts and even maggots. So if you are struggling with the minefield of rigs, chopping and changing and generally getting your head in a spin then tie yourself some of these up and forget rigs. You can be completely confident in these.

CONFIDENCE IS KEY

SPENCER HUMBLE

Overnighter success.

I use the superb Captive coated braid in 25lb for all of my hooklinks, full stop. This is mounted helicopter rig style, on Pindown Leaders with leadcore chod beads with the leader tied to Trap line. Trap line is bullet proof and sinks nicely too. If I feel I need to make a change to anything, which is rare, then it will be one of two things. Either the distance the Leadcore Chod Bead is fished from the lead (dependant on the bottom I am fishing over) and/or the length of my hooklink. If you are fishing on a hard bottom then the chod bead can be moved right down next to the lead. If you are fishing over weed then slide it

Be prepared.

further up your leader. Nothing else needs changing. Have confidence in these set ups and you need not worry about rigs any longer! Of course the same can be said of bait. There are many good baits out there today, some exceptional. Don’t look for the cheapest, don't be desperate to be a field tester or team member either, just use the very best that you can afford. Bait, along with your end tackle are ‘the’ game changers. Once you have these sorted you can then spend your hard earned on some of the other lovely toys in this guide! So we have the bait, we have the end tackle and now the confidence. Find a water that has the size of fish in that you wish to catch, after all you are not going to catch 30’s or 40’s if there are none in the venue you are fishing. Get yourself into a routine in your life, a routine that lets you go fishing. Whether it be once a week, once a month or even once a year, try and get yourself into a routine. When you do get out, really think about your fishing, use your hunting instinct, we all have it, even if it is hidden away when we are at the office or on a building site! Don’t go for the biggest most comfortable swim or the one closest to the car park. It does not matter if your banksticks are straight, it matters that your hooks are sharp and your location is spot on. I promise you that if you stick with the above principles, trust in your tackle and hopefully in Avid’s tackle, then you will be successful. We as anglers are so lucky to enjoy the sunsets and share space with nature. Get out there and enjoy it. Good luck. Spencer Humble

The coating is super-durable with a matt finish and disappears on any lakebed. With a number of varying sizes and weights there certainly is something for everyone. Further along within this section, you will encounter our range of Yard Sticks. We have gained a following over the years with our easily recognisable range of Yard Sticks. Unlike standard marker sticks, the Yard Sticks have a slight curve in the end of them. This gentle curve ensures your main line peels effortlessly off the poles if you stand in between them both and start reeling. There’s no need to remove the wraps turn by turn like with conventional sticks. The range features three models from the compact Overnighter Yard Sticks to the premium Carbon Yard Sticks, we have ensured that there is something that appeals to a wide range of angling situations. A recent to the range has been the impressive range of Retracta baiting tools, which were developed through years of using inadequate carp fishing baiting tools. We often found that other baiting tools don't fit in compact modern tackle boxes and break after just a few uses. The needles are titanium coated to increase strength and durability. The retractable design of the needles allows the needle points to be stored away and protected, to prevent any form of damage to both user and the needle itself.

It’s durable and made from a super buoyant material so it will rise to the surface effortlessly. By separating the flights from the body and shaping it similar to a dart, this aerodynamic float will fly straight every time. It is finished in a high-vis orange colour so it is visible at range.

Contains everything you need to start feature finding. The products in the kit have been designed and developed to work together, and will allow you to find out exactly what the lake bed in front of you is like.

Boasting unique grooves, they transmit more information through the rod tip than a standard lead and gather debris from the bottom. They have a solid stem which gives a more accurate reading in weed. The swivel on the stem is positioned away from the lead so the float will always rise even if the lead is covered in debris.

PLAN B

MATTHIAS PLOEGER

PLAN B MATTHIAS PLOEGER discusses the importance of having a plan B to ensure your season end successfully. Every Autumn I find myself being drawn to the banks of the river. Autumn is often the best time in my region in Germany to catch one of the highly sought-after river carp. Autumn at the river is simply magical. As the fog rolls over the surrounding fields, the carp are preparing for the winter, often feeding regularly in anticipation of the cold months ahead. Prior to the fall of the Autumn, I often prepare spots, regularly baiting and ensuring the areas are clean and presentable. On the build-up to my first session, I often visited the lake several times per week. I regularly traveled over 1000km per week to and from the river ensuring that i can keep bait trickling in on my spot ready for my first session. To the delight of my flatmates, I am often regularly cooking fresh kilos of particles into my shared kitchen to keep on top of my baiting campaign. I find that pre-baiting has become an essential aspect of my success on the river. Busy work and personal lives often mean that everyday anglers just like myself cannot fish as regular as we would like. Often making the efforts to drive to the river before or after work is tiring but worth it! On the eve of my first planned night on the river, I spent hours lying in bed watching the clock with a burning sense of excitement and anticipation. 3 am came around and despite being exhausted from work, I decided I couldn't wait any longer. Throwing my gear into the boot of my car I was soon making my way tot he river. Arriving before first light my rods were cast to my pre-baited areas and I sat back bursting with anticipation as to what was going to happen. Unfortunately, the session was uneventful, Not wanting to fall at the first hurdle, I set about fishing overnighters between work for a 2 week period to no avail. Enjoying the peace and tranquility of fishing in the region I was left scratching my head. I knew from my previous years spent on this river that it didn't give away its prizes easily. However, it had never been quite this difficult. Whilst exploring the lower section of the specific stretch of the river, I stumbled across a lake which backed onto the banks of the river. Interestingly, after talking to a close friend which I knew had fished in the region before, he informed me that the lake I had discovered which backed onto the river contained some carp. After seeing a few of his old catch pictures from the lake

PLAN B

MATTHIAS PLOEGER I knew that I had to give the lake a try whilst the river was fishing so poor. The lake was similar to the river in many ways, quiet and free from a lot of angling pressure. This enticed me back time and time again. I needed a place where I could relax from the stress of everyday life and with the focus solely on my angling Enjoying the peace and nature surrounding the lake I decided to focus my efforts on the lake whilst keeping an eye on the river. Once again preparing spots with bait. I decided to focus on a section of the lake that was overgrown and extremely hard to access at first. I knew that this would be a good area for the fish to gather, as it was clear nobody had fished the area in so long. The state of the overgrown banks forced me to have to set my rods up in the water away from the marginal snags. I prepared my spots well, using the large quantities of bait i had made fort he river. My first planned night was once again approaching fast and I must admit that feeling was similar to the feeling I had before fishing the river My efforts were rewarded on within my few nights at the lake. Finally, all of the pre-baiting had resulted in success. Although, I only managed to catch two small common’s and several unbelievably large bream I was confident that I would be able to continue catching throughout the Autumn. Working during the day and fishing at night, I was regularly visiting the lake and applying bait to my spots. Finally, with a few days off from work and my university work quietening down I had the chance to spend two nights at the lake, which seemed like an eternity to me after weeks of short 12 hour overnight sessions.

First blood.

Mist rolling over the river.

PLAN B

MATTHIAS PLOEGER

An impressive mirror from the lake!

I enjoyed being able to spend the morning at the lake. Often, fishing the short overnight sessions I felt like I was leaving the lake at the prime time to catch fish. I leaned back, made myself a coffee and embraced nature as it slowly prepared for the cooler months ahead. At 10 am the first rod was away. Following a spirited battle, I soon slipped the net under the fish. I was relieved and the memory of the previous tough few weeks was a fragment of my memory. That specific day ended up being extremely successful, landing a further 5 fish. The night was quiet as usual and the next day picked up from where the previous left off, landing a further 4 fish. It became obvious that my previous efforts were pointless as the night passed once uneventful once again. I knew that I needed to adjust my spare time to be able to visit the lake during the day time. Managing to secure 2 days off during the week due to adjusting my study time and swapping a few shifts, the plan worked out. I got off to a good start and I had my ambition back, I started to wonder what was possible in this lake. Altering my baiting approach from particles to boilies I noticed that the fish became significantly easier to catch over a spread of boilies than they often were whilst feeding over particles. Refining my approach to bait allowed me to build up unbelievable results, catching numerous fish over a short period. One of my most memorable days saw me slip the net under 16 fish in one day with a number of these being over 20kg! Unbelievable.

Often, fishing the short overnight sessions I felt like I was leaving the lake at the prime time to catch fish.

PLAN B

MATTHIAS PLOEGER

My favourite capture of the year.

Of course, my Autumn didn't exactly go to plan. All of my efforts preparing the river resulted in several blanks. However, having a plan B is always a good idea when approaching difficult and unpredictable venues such as the river. The lake offered me some of the best fishing I have ever witnessed. Adjusting my approach allowed me to identify the best times to be at the lake. It also allowed me to identify the best baiting approach which significantly increased my success rate! The moral of all this is to always keep your options open and do not allow yourself to get blinkered in the hope of results that are extremely hard to come by. Always remember, there is always a plan B! Matthias Ploeger
