HEART-TO-HEART
You are the local driving force behind today’s universal rallying cry: We are in this together. PERSPECTIVE is a powerful weapon. Of course, I don’t need to tell any of you that. Amid the tumultuous, alarming and somber COVID-19 pandemic, I have a list that has yet to stop expanding—of residents and area businesses who have literally done everything they can to be a source of comfort for the community. To name a few, Grow + Gather used donated/gathered funds to make food for hospital and assisted living center staff and patients; Peyton and Ashley Manning bought multiple meals for staff on day and night shifts at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital; Lotus Network’s well-timed Instagram communications have inspired both good deeds and moments of comic relief; and Special Olympics Colorado’s April 25 Better Together virtual walk offered an invitation for anyone, anywhere to feel part of a caring group while soaking up vitamin D. AvidLifestyle is proud to be part of this ethos of service, which is why we’ve done everything we can within this issue to share in and celebrate our spirit of community. For the time you’ll be spending at home, we have healing and health-focused activities. Make desserts using the bare essentials (pg. 24), follow a seasoned trainer through an equipment-free, effective workout (pg. 48) and get down-to-earth beauty routine inspiration from downto-earth women (pg. 42).

For the invaluable mission of supporting local businesses, we cheer on more than 30 in these pages (including DTC Nutrition, another food and drink stop making sure health care workers are eating and drinking well). And most importantly, in the continued fight against COVID-19, we take a look inside an organization known worldwide as a beacon of hope in dire medical circumstances (pg. 34). Then, we further celebrate the many ways our community is responding to the needs of these uncertain times (pg. 59). I’ve never meant this more than I do now: Here’s to living well.

THE REST IS HISTORY
// how it all started
There’s No People Like Cherry Hills People This is the full account of one Broadway VIP’s ties to Cherry Hills Village. By Lori Midson PLENTY OF MYTHS surrounding Ethel Merman’s connection to Cherry Hills Village have circulated over the years. But a deep dive into the complicated life of the Broadway starlet sets things straight: The talented diva did, in fact, live at 26 Sunset Drive, an exclusive Cherry Hills Village address situated in a tranquil enclave epitomized by sprawling multimillion-dollar manors and mansions. Merman, who died in 1984, was familiar with Colorado. She and her two children spent several holidays in Glenwood Springs, and she adored the state’s fourseason climate. In 1953, Merman wed Robert F. Six, president and founder of Continental Airlines, which was then headquartered in Denver. Not long after they said “I do,” the newlyweds, along with Merman’s children, moved their belongings from New York City to Cherry Hills Village.
Instead, they found their paradise on Sunset Drive, a neighborhood that attracted numerous socialites and movers and shakers, including family members of Presidents Roosevelt and Truman. The couple purchased a 28-room graystone Tudor at 26 Sunset Drive, which her daughter nicknamed “Six Acres.” Originally built in 1927, the stately home, which is still standing,
By all accounts, Merman, now a housewife, loved her home. She quickly made it her own, swapping out the original ceiling-beige color palette with a riot of bold turquoise and scarlet hues, fashionable chintz wallpaper in all of its flowery glory and artwork from masters like Renoir and Monet. In December of 1953, Merman and Six hosted a housewarming cocktail party and invited their affluent neighbors. During her time in Cherry Hills, Merman also showcased her estate to visiting VIPs. Despite a declaration that she was done entertaining live audiences, Merman performed with the Denver Symphony Orchestra at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre, in part to establish prominence within her neighborhood. Over time, however, she returned to New York and the Broadway stage. Though there were ups and downs along the way—including a painful divorce from Six—Merman eventually became one of, if not the biggest star on Broadway, leaving behind a legacy that still reverberates through Sunset Drive.

They’d initially set their sights on building a home at 3900 South Colorado Boulevard. But while the manor—a formal French country castle situated on more than two acres that’s since been extensively remodeled (but has continued to tout a connection to Merman)—was eventually completed, Merman and Six had a change of heart.
was listed at $79,000. While Six was hardly broke, it was Merman who supplied a down payment of $10,000.

we are living through right now, there is one community value of ours that hasn’t changed—in fact, it has only grown stronger: the drive to keep our purlieus bursting at the seams with local businesses. The Picture of Health
Leslie Stanford launched DTC NUTRITION in November 2019 with a tagline that had a lot to prove for a drink shop situated between two boutique fitness studios in Orchard Plaza: “We call what we do ‘healthy
By Ali Longwell
fast food,’” she says. In a state where wellness is such a common focus, Stanford wasn’t interested in giving locals another health fad to follow. Rather, “DTC Nutrition is a way to supplement what people are already doing in a healthy, active lifestyle,” she says. “Most people know how to eat well, or they have a theory of eating well, but it can be tough sometimes to really live that out.” So, her menu is on-the-go friendly (orders via text message are encouraged). And its sips—meal-replacement and pre-/post-workout protein “smoothies,” teas, energy drinks, protein coffee and more—are loaded with key factors of daily nutrition, with one noticeably pleasant difference. “It all tastes surprisingly good,” Stanford says. She and her team, for example, specifically designed some DTC Nutrition drinks to taste like your favorite flavors of ice cream. (Hello, cake batter and Thin Mint taste-alikes!) All that to say, the “healthy fast food” slogan holds up—especially after a look at the ingredients in three staple blends. THE VIKING SMOOTHIE Viking Power Elite is one of two gyms that share a wall with DTC Nutrition. Øyvind Gulbrandsen, a Viking Power Elite co-owner, had a hand in creating one of the nutrition bar’s most popular smoothies. “The Viking Smoothie assists in muscle recovery and repair, and supports muscle growth immediately after a workout,” says Stanford. What does it taste like? A mocha (i.e., it’s made with coffee lovers in mind).
DTC Nutrition also sells the products used in their recipes for that very purpose. These are a few of the additional grocery items Stanford recommends having ready at home:
When to drink it: “Packed with 39 grams of protein and 80 milligrams of caffeine, this smoothie is best pre- and/or post-workout,” says Stanford.

Herbalife24 Rebuild Strength in chocolate: The powder’s whey and casein proteins and tri-core protein-amino blend are said to help rebuild muscle and speed recovery; iron, an essential ingredient for blood-cell production, enhances your body’s oxygen-carrying capacity; branched-chain amino acids keep growing muscles, too. Herbalife High Protein Iced Coffee in mocha: Whey protein helps rebuild muscles; two grams of sugar and 80 milligrams of caffeine support a quick energy boost. BLUEBERRY SCONE SMOOTHIE This is DTC Nutrition’s take on morning baked goods. What does it taste like? Your favorite semi-sweet berry pastry.
What to know about
PROTEIN COFFEE In a nutshell, protein coffee is a coffee-flavored and “coffee rich” protein powder added to water to make a drink. DTC Nutrition’s protein coffee is the same Herbalife High Protein Iced Coffee mix that’s in the Viking Smoothie. The powder comes in two flavors: mocha and house blend (flavored like a café latte). Both are served over ice. From a health perspective, the mix has 15 grams of protein, 80 milligrams of caffeine, 2 grams of sugar and comes in at 100 calories. When it comes to flavor, “the house blend tastes like a richer classic cup of coffee and Mocha tastes like a richer mocha,” says Stanford. “We like to think of it as a ‘functional coffee,’ as it adds that important macronutrient—protein.”
When to drink it: As one of the shop’s meal-replacement offerings, “this smoothie is ideal for breakfast or lunch,” says Nick Sikonski, partner at DTC Nutrition. What the nutrition label would say: The Blueberry Scone smoothie contains five Herbalife mixes and has a total of 270 calories, with 24 grams of plant-based protein, 25 milligrams of caffeine and 24 essential vitamins and minerals. About the five Herbalife mixes: Herbalife Formula 1 Healthy Meal in cookies n’ cream and dulce de leche, and Herbalife Protein Drink Mix in vanilla, satisfy hunger and fill the smoothie with 21 vitamins and minerals; Herbalife Prolessa Duo helps you feel fuller quicker and is said to aid in decreasing body fat; and Herbalife Green Tea in pomegranate brings a nice kick of caffeine and supports the body’s antioxidant activity. PIKES PEAK TEA Think sweet tea, but with less sugar. What does it taste like? This brew (served cold) has a slight berry flavor. When to drink it: Pikes Peak tea helps with energy, so it’s best sipped in the morning or early afternoon.
CURBSIDE PICKUP is available as long as stay-at-home and dine-in closure orders are in place.

Home Sweets Home HOLLY BAKER’S blog, A Baker’s House, serves as a relatable reminder that sugared baked goods have a knack for bringing people together. “I’ve always loved to bake—which really means I love eating sweets—but I started my blog back in 2011 as a way to share recipes with my mom,” says the Greenwood Village resident. As the baker (who often creates gluten-free treats), Baker continues, putting the world away to focus on recipe steps can feel therapeutic. Moments when ingredients are limited shouldn’t hinder the curative, community-building fun. Baker’s solution: toothsome, adjustable recipes featuring staple items. “My kids and I look at raiding the pantry a lot like watching an episode of Food Network’s Chopped,” she says. “Have fun with it,” celebrate with it and even use the time to get the kids excited about science.
Don’t have strawberries? Use any type of berry, says Baker: “Fresh berries are preferred, but frozen work well if that is what’s on hand right now. Let frozen berries defrost and drain, then add on top of the Pavlova. Or cook frozen berries with sugar in a saucepan to turn them into a jam-like sauce. No fresh or frozen berries? Heat a few tablespoons of jam in the microwave or a saucepan and drizzle over the meringue. Get creative with other ingredients you have at home: Apple slices cooked with a small bit of sugar would be lovely. Add a drizzle of bottled caramel sauce too!”
By Kendall Kostelic
PAVLOVA WITH STRAWBERRIES Gluten free; serves 12 INGREDIENTS 4 egg whites, room temperature (save yolks for another purpose) ⅛ teaspoon cream of tartar ¾ cup plus 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (separate into ½ cup, ¼ cup and 1 tablespoon measurements) 2 pints strawberries, washed, hulled and sliced 1 cup heavy cream
Spread egg-white mixture within the circle outlined on the parchment. Bake for 45 minutes, then turn off the oven. Leave the meringue in the oven (without opening the oven door) for one hour before removing to cool completely. Toss strawberries with ¼ cup sugar in a bowl and let sit for 30 minutes. Whip the heavy cream with 1 tablespoon sugar to soft peaks. Assemble the Pavlova: Top the cooled meringue with whipped cream and strawberries. The meringue should be crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.

// sweet treats Missing an ingredient? “Homemade Aussie Bites are a great recipe to customize. The combination of ingredients isn’t fussy—just use what you have. Don’t have dried cherries? Use more raisins. Lacking oats? Use granola cereal. What if you don’t like quinoa? Simply leave it out or include a puffed rice cereal instead. You can change the ingredients to satisfy dietary preferences as well.”
HOMEMADE AUSSIE BITES Gluten free; makes 24 INGREDIENTS 2 cups gluten-free oats (separated into 1 cup portions) 1 cup cooked quinoa ¼ cup dried apricots ¼ cup dried cherries ½ cup pitted dates ¼ cup raisins ¼ cup honey ¼ cup pistachios ½ cup coconut flakes 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 teaspoon baking soda METHOD Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a mini-muffin tin with baking spray, if necessary for your tin. Use a food processor to process 1 cup of the oats to a flour-like consistency. Pour flour-like oats into a medium bowl with remaining cup of oats and quinoa. Stir to combine. Add apricots, cherries, dates and raisins to the food processor (there’s no need to clean the appliance after the oats). Pulse to break fruits into tiny pieces. Pour the oat and quinoa mixture back into the food processor. Add honey, pistachios, coconut flakes, melted butter and baking soda and pulse until the mixture comes together. It will likely form a ball. Place about 1 tablespoon of the mix into each mini-muffin space. Press down to fill the muffin cavities. Bake for 12-14 minutes or until the edges start to brown. Let cool in the pan completely before removing.

Collector’s Choice FOLLOWING AN AREA ART CONSULTANT THROUGH A KEY FINE-ART FAIR. By Chad Chisholm ICONIC BLUE-CHIP artworks adorn art collections the world over; the expositions where these compendium pieces are culled, however, are a little less well-known. Locally, fine art connoisseurs have made a keen habit of going to Lance Vigil for that insight. As Cherry Hills Village and Denver Tech Center residents already know, the art consultant’s decades-long career in architecture and fine art makes him an expert in the field. Under his brand, Vigil Fine Arts, he also curates works for enthusiasts in Aspen and the greater Denver metro area, and manages the installation of pieces in global destinations as far away as Qatar’s Hamad International Airport. In February, Vigil turned his calibrated fine-art eye to Frieze Los Angeles, a leading industry event centered around new-to-market, museum-ready pieces. At a time when past in-person art experiences have become even more treasured, we offer an insider’s view of Vigil’s time at Frieze L.A.
Editor’s note: Chad Chisholm and Lance Vigil had a working relationship prior to this experience. Vigil sells Chisholm’s fine-art photography through Vigil Fine Arts and Chisholm takes product photos for Vigil Fine Arts.
The Frieze brand is known as the world’s leading platform for modern and contemporary art. The Los Angeles fair came to the city in 2019, but Frieze as a company was founded in 1991 with the launch of frieze magazine. In addition to growing to three publications—frieze, Frieze Masters Magazine and Frieze Week— it hosts four international art fairs: Frieze London, Frieze Masters (celebrating works from the ancient era to the late 20th century; also in London), Frieze New York and Frieze Los Angeles. The Los Angeles show takes place at Paramount Pictures Studios. “Although Frieze Los Angeles’ main tent is smaller in square footage than the London or New York shows, the galleries represented were of the same caliber in art and artists,” says Vigil, who has also visited the London and New York events.

Vigil was introduced to fine art when he was “quite young. As a child, my father, Dr. Abel L. Vigil, took me to work with him when he was the art director/ administrator for KRMA-TV Channel 6 from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s,” he remembers. “Concurrently, he was a prolific artist himself. His honors and awards are numerous: He had juried for many national art competitions, lectured at the Denver Art Museum and other institutions, and his works can be viewed on permanent display around Denver, such as the sculpture in Governor’s Park and the ceramic murals in the lobby of St. Joseph’s Hospital on 19th Avenue. From 1975 onwards, he was the supervisor of art administration for the entire Denver Public School system, retiring in the late 1990s.”
Some of the show’s art will be purchased and displayed privately, which means it won’t be seen publicly again, and some will be installed in museums, behind barriers or encased in acrylic. New York artist George Condo is credited with coining the term “artificial realism.” His piece here, called Interconnection, is a realistic representation of that which is artificial. Works by Condo’s contemporaries, the late Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, that helped shape American pop art in the ’80s, are also on display at the Frieze L.A. exhibit. Vigil included some of Haring’s pieces in the Hamad International Airport premium lounges.
Here, Vigil admires Norwegian artist Ida Ekblad’s A ball of Malt and Madame Butterfly, a painting that shows how varied and diverse the modern and contemporary art world can be.

// art show Oil and acrylic paintings, multimedia on canvas and sculptures create a smorgasbord for contemporary art enthusiasts. “Like a diarist, I record the living universe—this season, this day, this hour, this wind, this kind of grass … this kind of snow, this sound in the grass, this silence,” Ugo Rondinone writes of this piece, Ten Mountains + One Sun.
From Will Boone’s bronze sculpture, The Three Fates (pictured), to movie screenings of short films with the Paramount water tower in the background, Frieze became part of the famed L.A. film studio. Work was installed on street corners and as neon signage affixed to walls, and pieces were constructed during the fair itself, only to be disassembled at the event’s conclusion. “Los Angeles is just starting to define itself as a major player in the art world,” Vigil says. “The backlot was a wonderful ancillary venue that was just as enticing as the main event. This is a really important fair to become familiar with in the art world.”
PHOTOS: CHAD CHISHOLM
“Art fairs are incredibly exciting to me because they consolidate what is happening in the art world right now from the gallerist’s perspective, as well as buyers, critics and aficionados, collectively,” explains Vigil. Half Magic by Pae White was a favorite at the fair. The massive installation uses 2,743 silkscreened and electroplated steel discs and 163 threads that suspend the discs and create a large orb. “Art is so subjective,” Vigil muses. “Some works speak to individuals, some to the masses and some to spaces.”

IN A FEW WORDS, PROJECT C.U.R.E. IS A UNIVERSAL SYMBOL OF HOPE.
one place. We have the entire world to serve. You can’t afford to fall in love with only one part of it.”
NEARLY A QUARTER of a century ago, Douglas Jackson was embarking on his first needs assessment trip with Project C.U.R.E. to find out how the nonprofit could best serve hospitals and clinics in Bolivia. As the plane descended on La Paz, he looked out the window at the sprawling city. His dad, Jim, the founder of the Centennial-based humanitarian relief organization, nudged him and said: “Don’t lose your heart here.”
Since its inception more than three decades ago, Project C.U.R.E. has brought medical supplies and equipment—items like beds, gloves, CAT scan units—to 138 countries, ultimately empowering doctors and nurses to save lives. The organization is bridging a gap: Thousands of people in the developing world die every day of treatable illnesses because local hospitals don’t have adequate medical supplies. The organization also helps train nurses, midwives and birth attendants. In Ghana, for instance, midwives learned lifesaving skills that allowed them, in one year, to save 184 babies born with primary apnea.
“What do you mean?” Jackson responded. Then, his dad gave Jackson a bit of wisdom that’s stuck with him to this day: “Most people fall in love with the first place they work at with us, and then get locked into going back to that
“One of the most poignant moments in our first COVID-19 drive, for me, was when I was directing traffic and an older couple rolled down their window and handed over two canisters of sterile wipes.” 34

Since March, saving the world has started at home. Due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, the nonprofit has temporarily shifted its focus to the critical needs here in the United States, donating masks, sanitizer, protective equipment and other supplies to hospitals, emergency services and local governments in Denver, as well as Nashville, Houston, Chicago, Kansas City, Phoenix and around Philadelphia—all where Project C.U.R.E. has warehouse distribution centers. Jackson, who is president and CEO, tells us more about the work Project C.U.R.E.—which stands for Commission on Urgent Relief and Equipment—has done worldwide and how the organization is offering critical support right now. How did Project C.U.R.E. get its start?
PHOTOS: COURTESY PROJECT C.U.R.E.
“My dad founded the organization with my mom in their Evergreen garage in 1987. He had been working as an economic consultant in developing countries. During a trip to Brazil, an interpreter—a medical student—took him to a clinic near Rio de Janeiro that was completely empty of supplies. He learned patients were often turned away because of the dire lack of medical provisions. He made a promise to the clinic doctor, and with the help of his friends in the medical industry, was able to gather $250,000 worth of medical supplies within a month to donate to the clinic. “Now we have 32 paid employees, 35,000 volunteers and we have sent as many as 20 semitrailers filled with equipment into the developing world on a monthly basis. My dad is still on the board, and he and my mom live in that same Evergreen home.” How has the organization been able to grow to have such a big impact?
and it really speaks to how we need to get a handle on the supply chain here. Because of that demand, we’ve done something we’ve never done before and pivoted to donate 100 percent of the items that individuals and companies give to the local fight against COVID-19, to the brave men and women on the frontlines in our communities.
“Our volunteers create the magic. We built an organization that’s truly focused on creating opportunities for them. My dad and I are not medical doctors. We’ve said to nurses: ‘This is your sandbox, tell us how this works. You’re
in charge.’ Over the years, we’ve focused on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as H.I.V./AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and Ebola.” How has Project C.U.R.E been aiding in the COVID-19 response? “We started getting requests from local health care providers—doctors, nurses, volunteers— who are on the frontlines and are running out of N95 masks, personal protective equipment and gloves. We’re in the United States, so you might think ‘wow, how can that be?’ It’s sobering, 36

“We had an amazing outpouring of support at our first drive in Denver. One of the most poignant moments for me was when I was standing out there, directing traffic, and an older couple—who would be in the high-risk group—rolled down their window and handed over two canisters of sterile wipes. We had real estate agents donate shoe covers and construction firms donate non-sterile gloves. And the Metropolitan State University biology department donated lab masks. It was really touching.”

ONE OF THIS SEASON’S MOST POPULAR ROUTINES HAS A NEW, ESSENTIAL MEANING.
Clean Sweep By Kathy Hisey Baum
THE THOROUGH home scrubbing that is spring cleaning is no longer just for sparkle and shine: It’s a basic chore that promotes good health. And it feels more important than ever to get it right. Enter Alpine Maids, an award-winning Denver cleaning company that travels across the metro area to keep homes (and, currently, offices and commercial buildings) sanitary and spotless. The team uses a 51-point checklist for its disinfecting deep-clean service—something that’s kept business booming since March. “We clean for cancer patients with compromised immune systems through the nonprofit ‘Cleaning for a Reason,’” says owner Chris Willatt. “So we’re used to making sure every area in a home is thoroughly disinfected.” Here, deep-cleaning tips that will put you—not microorganisms—in charge of cleanliness.
HIGH-TOUCH AREAS YOU MIGHT HAVE SPACED NEED SCRUBBING ❏ Light switches ❏ Bottles and bottle caps in the bathroom ❏ All appliance handles ❏ Stereo knobs ❏ Blind cords and wands ❏ Remotes ❏ Doorbells
LET’S TALK CLEANERS To clean, Alpine Maids typically uses nontoxic Green Seal-certified products by Ecolab, a leader worldwide in water, hygiene and energy technologies and more. But disinfecting requires the “heavy hitters. For most cleaning needs, green products work as well as traditional products,” Willatt says. “But cleaning and disinfecting are two separate things. The only way to ensure a 99.9 percent removal of COVID-19 and other pathogens is to use disinfectants.” WHAT WORKS: Anything on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s official list (called “List N”) of disinfectants that have qualified for use against SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. epa.gov 38

OVERALL, A PRODUCT WILL STERILIZE IF: It contains 70-95 percent alcohol, 0.5 percent hydrogen peroxide or is bleach. Mix ¼ cup of bleach per gallon of water. WHAT DOESN’T WORK: ▪ Vinegar ▪ Ammonia ▪ Witch hazel ▪ Essential oils ▪ Salts PLAN B If you’re running low on the best stuff, scrub with soap using a lot of elbow grease (not just a light wipe), Willatt says. The soap gets rid of the outer layer of the COVID-19 virus, so it can’t bind to or enter human cells. Wear gloves and wash your hands with the gloves on after cleaning, then wash your hands again after removing the gloves. A GOOD-TO-KNOW “The difference between the commercial-grade products we use and store-bought options is commercial cleaners have a one-minute contact time, meaning the surface needs to stay wet for one minute to thoroughly disinfect,” Willatt says. “In comparison, the contact time for a store-bought product is typically four minutes.”

Methods to Their Radness Time is not always kind to beauty trends. Consider 2015’s over-the-top contouring, the over-tweezed eyebrows surrounding the aughts and the ’80s mullet. Fads come and go—Ancient Romans would whiten their teeth with urine, for heaven’s sake. Instead, the first stop in a pursuit to revitalize and simplify your habits should be to look to trusted friends and family who have time-tested routines that are effective and easy—regimens with staying power. Welcome to that first stop. By Kendall Kostelic
If you don’t know AMY MEYER SMITH from her role as marketing director at INFINITI OF DENVER, you likely recognize the name from major philanthropic and food and wine events such as Urban Nights and the Breckenridge Wine Classic—or even from a quick introduction (before social distancing) on the High Line Canal trail. The Cherry Hills Village resident makes it a point during and outside of work hours to be part of organizations that make a difference. For Smith, a successful beauty routine creates almost effortless mornings and keeps her body feeling healthy. Everything starts with a workout “My beauty routine, really, starts with going to the gym or working out every morning. I think having a healthy, active lifestyle is part of a beauty routine because it helps you get good sleep and keeps you nourished on the inside, so you can look and feel that way on the outside. I go to Pure Barre, lift weights and, of course, run and walk our dogs on the High Line Canal trail.” “I don’t do any caffeine” “I haven’t had caffeine in probably 10 years. One, I think coffee is pretty bitter in the morning. But, two, I’m one of those people who is up as soon as I open my eyes in the morning. I just don’t need it. From my understanding, caffeine also dehydrates you; having hydrated skin is already tough enough in Colorado.” Tricks to Smith’s 25-minute morning It all centers around two beauty services. “I would forgo Starbucks for a year to get a blowout and semimonthly eyelash extensions. Those make me feel pretty: All women should take the time to do whatever it is that makes them feel that way, whether it has to do with nails, hair, etc.” “My blowouts last for five days” “The trick to a good blowout is the stylist. My stylist’s name is Molly. I followed her from school to her own salon, Studio 515. I do, though, sleep with my hair in a high ponytail that sits right on top of my head. When I take it out in the morning, that blowout body is still there.” The beauty advice Smith will never forget “To laugh. The more you laugh, the younger you look and feel: From a wrinkles perspective, frowning does cause more lines. My husband is a big part of that advice. We have a lot of fun together.” Her top beauty “secret” “Dermaplaning. I do it once a month. Dermaplaning helps your makeup lay so much nicer.” More Kérastase, please “Kérastase is my go-to hair product brand. Kérastase’s Elixir Ultime L’Huile hair oil is

great for flyaways. I like it so much I have a bottle at the office and a bottle at home.”
in my car and have my kids put it on their faces before school.”
Burt’s Bees lip balm is her everyday “lipstick” “I have around six tubes of the pomegranate ‘flavor,’ specifically, in my purse at all times. If a tube falls out, I’m covered!”
Kubina takes the time to imspect ingredient labels “I’m always reading labels. Even if products say they are nontoxic or clean, it’s not always true. I try to avoid sodium laureth sulfate, which is in a lot of shampoos and body washes, oxybenzone and octinoxate, both in sunscreens, and sulfates and phthalates. There are a lot of phthalates in perfumes.”
Next products on her shopping list “More Kérastase and Charlotte Tilbury’s newest Superstar Lips tint.”
JENNELLE KUBINA has become a woman of fashion expertise. Two years ago, the mother of three bought The Streets at Southglenn’s Apricot Lane Boutique in an effort to create some flexibility in her career. Her entrepreneurial spirit has found a lot of fun in the business— kind of like the gratification of function she has uncovered in a no-fuss, chemical-free-focused skin-care regimen, which takes cues from tips she learned as a child. It all started with Mary Kay “My mom was a Mary Kay lady when I was little. She was a teacher; selling Mary Kay was her side gig. I could literally do the whole facial and Mary Kay pitch alongside her. But what I learned through all of that as a young girl was that you have to wash your face every night, and it can’t be with regular soap.” Why nontoxic products are important “My mom died of ovarian cancer at the age of 58; I was 28. We had a couple of years together after she was diagnosed, and we talked a lot about what she thought happened. She wondered if chemicals played a part. Even though we don’t know the cause of her cancer, those talks made me think about the chemicals I was putting on my skin. I want to at least try to avoid some of them. I’m not perfect at having a chemical-free routine, but you just cut back where you can.” Kubina has been serious about sunscreen for five years “I’m from Cleveland. When my family and I moved to Colorado in 2015, I noticed a visible difference in the skin of women my age, and it’s because of all the sun out here. Northeast Ohio is cloud-covered most of the time and it’s not a mile high. I definitely haven’t had the sun exposure that Colorado natives do. So, my anti-aging helper if you will, is IT Cosmetics’ CC+ oil-free matte cream because it has SPF 40. I also keep Aveeno body cream that has an SPF of 20 or 30
Her go-to chemical-free brand “Pure Haven, which used to be called Ava Anderson. It’s not in stores, you have to order through the Pure Haven website.” Her beauty memento “I still have some of my mom’s original Mary Kay lipsticks from when I was five, just to have them. She liked her fuchsia lipstick.” The beauty product she’ll never use again “Oil-based eye-makeup remover. The oil-based, rather than water-based, formula is supposed to work better but I can’t stand the way it makes my eyes and face feel; it burns! I actually returned a $4 oil-based remover that I got from Target because it just did not work.” Kubina’s saves and splurges “From the drugstore, I get mascara and Physicians Formula’s The Healthy Lip Velvet Finish—which I have in six shades because it stays on and doesn’t dry your lips— … but my favorite moisturizer is from Beautycounter, which is another great clean company. It’s called Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion. The formula kind of ‘turns on’ when you need it and ‘turns off’ when you don’t.” Perfume also isn’t in her beauty bag “I’ll wear diluted essential oils as a perfume, but other than that I don’t wear fragrances because of the chemicals.” What you wouldn’t guess about Kubina’s routine She doesn’t need to put on body lotion daily: “But when I am feeling dry, I use Burt’s Bees Ultimate Care Hand Cream (with baobab oil). My little girl has the worst dry hands and that’s the only lotion we’ve found that works for her. I’ve never been one to use a lot of products, but that one is extra nice.”
LEEDA RASSEKH’S nearly two-decade journey to local hair and makeup artistry acclaim started in Australia—with a demanding law firm job, a degree from a quality makeup program in Sydney and years with MAC, both in Australia and the U.S. It ends in south metro Denver with her own company, Leeda Beauty, and clients such as Leah Shafer, the Franklin D. Perfume isn’t in her beauty bag “I was in the wine business before joining my husband, Chris, at INFINITI. And there, smell is very important. You never want to affect the smell of wines, so really good lotion—Origins’ Precipitation body balm—is all I’ve used for around 25 years. Plus, with longer hair you also smell like your hair product.”

The most common question Rassekh gets from clients “How long does it take you to put your makeup on? When people see me, they assume it must take hours. They are always surprised when I say, ‘Oh, 15 to 20 minutes because that’s all I have time for.’” Her 15-20 minute makeup routine 1. “If it’s going to be a long day, I start with a face primer: The Porefessional by Benefit Cosmetics.” 2. “Next, I apply a Nars Cosmetics tinted moisturizer with SPF 30. I don’t usually like tinted moisturizers because they tend to slide off, but this one works. Unless I’m going to a wedding or big event, it’s all I wear.” 3. “A little Nars concealer underneath the eyes and a light powder.” 4. “Nars bronzer. I put on bronzer even when I don’t apply a full face of makeup. It evens out my skin and creates a nice glow.” 5. Eyeshadow. “I like to naturally enhance my eyes with tints that almost don’t look like they are there—eyeshadow colors that match my skin tone. For me, that means taupe, mauve and a gold shimmer. I call the completed look my excitement socket!” 6. A D.I.Y. eyeliner. (More on that later.) 7. “A good mascara, of course.” 8. “I define my brows. If could only choose one facial feature to do up, I would choose my eyebrows. They really frame your face, which makes eyebrows an important piece of the makeup puzzle. Eyebrow products, however, are tricky. A lot of options out there—pencils especially—pull too much and take out hairs. If I’m in a rush, I prefer Benefit Cosmetics’ eyebrow tinted gel.” 9. Finally, she’ll swipe on a Nars lip pencil and, for a long day, top everything with a finishing spray, “like Urban Decay’s All Nighter setting spray.” What you wouldn’t guess Rassekh uses “Sonia Roselli Beauty’s SexApeel exfoliating spray. Exfoliating sprays are popular in Korea. You spray it on your face or body (think knees and elbows), rub the area with your hand and all the dead skin just rolls off. It’s amazing.” Eyeshadow is not just for eyelids “I use eyeshadow on my eyebrows and as an eyeliner.” To use as an eyebrow filler or definer: “Fill a pencil makeup brush with an eyeshadow color that’s a lot lighter than your eyebrows, and brush. The color will get a lot darker as you put it on. A light brown shade, for example, is the perfect accent for dark brown eyebrows. You don’t need to use dark brown or black tints ever.” To use as an eyeliner: Dab a small, firm and angled makeup brush into the eyeshadow of
your choice. “Most of the time I’ll do a dark brown shade,” Rassekh says. Overall, the less powdery the eyeshadow is, the better. Tap off excess shadow and, leaning forward to keep powder from falling onto your face (you can also hold a tissue under your eyes to prevent this), follow along your lash line with the brush. Dab across your lash line, rather than dragging the brush. “This is a fail-proof method for winged eyeliner,” Rassekh says. Expect to recoat your brush two to three times throughout the process. If your brush is too soft or your eyeshadow too crumbly, you won’t be able to grab and apply enough shadow to create a clear line. What renews Rassekh’s skin after a sleepless night “I have a group chat with my four sisters. My sister who lives in Australia introduced the rest of us to this treatment that’s now becoming more popular in the U.S. called a Gua Sha facial massage. It’s a Chinese method of facial massage that relieves tension and boosts circulation to encourage lymphatic drainage, which gets rid of puffiness and undereye bags. And it really works. The massage almost sculpts your face: On your first try, massage only half of your face and you’ll almost instantly see a difference from the other half. “You use stone tools specifically designed for Gua Sha—they’re usually made of jade or rose quartz; just search for Gua Sha tools online— and basically slide the stone(s) over your face in different directions. There are specific massage tools for undereyes, too. One of my other sisters, who lives in Italy, has been doing this every morning and every night and her skin glows.” Spoiler alert: makeup artists know when you haven’t been drinking water “I can instantly tell when a bride’s face is hydrated well from within. Her skin is plump and you can almost feel the water.” A skin-care trend Rassekh won’t do again “At-home microneedling. One of my sisters talked me into a kit that uses a sort of stamp. The first time I tried it, I damaged my skin barrier for weeks. I pressed very lightly with the stamp, not using nearly as much pressure as salons, and was not instructed to avoid any activities or anything. We went on vacation a couple of days later and, after being in the sun and maybe going in the pool, I had red bumps all over my face and my skin was on fire. I had to use serums and products for weeks to get my skin back to normal. So: Leave those treatments to the professionals.” Next product on her shopping list “Kiehl’s Butterstick lip treatment. It has an SPF of 30, which is so important for summer.”

RENEE PAUL was 24 years old when “it” happened; the thing most women fear. After watching a bunch of young girls at a fitness demo for a local gym, she passed a mirror in her home, glanced back and noticed cellulite on her thighs for the first time. Paul knew cellulite is genetic and was pleased overall with the way she looked, but she made up her mind right then and there to join that gym and get in shape. »

“This bodyweight circuit workout is easy to do and doesn’t require any equipment. Everyone has been buying up home workout gear and forgetting the basics. These moves, without any gear, create a full-body workout.”
CARDIO: JUMPING JACKS (OR MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS) LEVEL 1: Take it slow and steady. LEVEL 2: Go “full force.” FORM UP: “There is actually a lot of technique involved in jumping jacks. Jump out almost like you’re going to do a little squat, with your knees slightly bent. The toes, knees and hips all need to follow the same line and arms need to be straight out and up, not in any of those weird slightly bent shapes.”
LOWER BODY: LUNGES (AND/OR SQUATS) LEVEL 1: Do one side at a time, with 10 stationary lunges on one leg and then the other. LEVEL 2: Take on moving lunges. Lunge forward with one leg and, using the same leg you just lunged forward with, lunge backward, which should work your opposite thigh. Alternate sides. LEVEL 3: For more cardio, try walking lunges. FORM UP: “Step out within your walking gait. Your legs should be going straight down and straight up, and only the ball of your back foot should touch the ground. The heel of your back foot should be parallel to the ceiling when you are in the full lunge position.”

Paul’s favorite workout at the gym was an aerobics class called Flashdance, created by choreographer Jeffrey Hornaday, who— lucky him—also worked on the classic ’80s film of the same name. When the gym’s instructor made plans to depart, Paul got a surprise invitation: Would she teach the class? When she said yes, Paul was handed a VHS tape with the Flashdance choreography, and her little cellulite incident began a lifelong fitness career. Today, Paul offers one-on-one personal training sessions, group training, nutrition coaching and, a portion of her business that has become very active with recent events, online training. She specializes in bodybuilding competition training, and at the age of 59, is still a competitive bodybuilder.
CORE AND UPPER BODY: PUSH-UPS LEVEL 1: Start with the tried-and-true classic. LEVEL 2: To work on balance, extend an arm at the end of each push-up. LEVEL 3: Add a twist. Immediately after coming up from a classic push-up, rotate like you are going into a side plank. Both feet should still be touching the ground and your free arm should be lifted towards the ceiling or sky. Bring the arm back down and repeat.
The more than 30 years in-between the Flashdance class and now went something like this: To make sure she was teaching the exercises in that first aerobics class properly, she began to research anatomy and came across a book written by former professional bodybuilder Gladys Portugues. Inspired by Portugues’ fitness path, Paul expanded her studies to food, nutrition and weight training, and became a certified health and fitness instructor. »
FORM UP: “A push-up is really another version of a plank. If you need to, start on your knees. Come all the way down to the ground with your hands next to your chest, press off the floor through your palms to come straight back up and repeat.”
PHOTOS: RENEE PAUL
FITNESS MYTHS Running is the best form of exercise. “Running is a great form of exercise—for runners. There is nothing wrong with running, but not everyone can do it. And there is a right way and wrong way to go running. If you simply walk at a good pace, you can get fit and lose weight.” If you’re not sweating, you’re not working hard enough. “If you’re not sweating, you’re dehydrated. Lack of sweat is not an indicator of a bad workout.” Lifting weights will make you bulky. “You will only bulk up like a bodybuilder if you eat and train like a bodybuilder. Lifting weights and gaining muscle can actually shape your body and burn more calories than cardio.”
GLUTES: FLOOR BRIDGE LEVEL 1: Bridge at a controlled pace. Hold each rep for two seconds at the top. LEVEL 2: On your last bridge, do a 10-second hold or pulse. LEVEL 3: For more abduction work, add a band around your legs and, pressing from your hips, push legs out at the top of each bridge. For more resistance, hold weights at your pelvis. FORM UP: “Make sure you keep all of your muscles contracted to isolate the glute muscles. Our bodies are wonderful creatures: Stronger muscles like to help out weaker muscles. So, if you’re glute muscles aren’t strong enough on their own to lift your hips and create a straight line from your knees to your underarms, other muscles want to help your glutes get there.”

Spot reduction works. “You can’t work only one part of the body and gain muscle or lose weight in just that location. It will not work.” No pain, no gain. “There is a difference between having sore muscles after a workout and collapsing on the gym floor, unable to get back up. Pain is never the sign of a good workout.”

Paul continued her fitness education after she moved to Germany, where her former husband was stationed with the U.S. military. She received international certification from ACE (the American Council on Exercise) and taught workouts for the Army MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) program. Then, back in the U.S., she took her rhythmic cardio and personal training know-how to gyms such as Bally Total Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness until 2011, when she branched out on her own and started Greenwood Village’s Conceptual Fitness by Renee. She continues to teach SilverSneakers at 24 Hour Fitness, which is a health and fitness program for adults 65 and older. “I’ve always agreed with the notion what the mind can conceive, the body will achieve,” Paul says.

Suffice it to say Paul knows more than a thing or two about how to stay active regardless of circumstances. Consider these exercises a lesson on getting in a good workout no matter where you are, or what kind of equipment you have to work with. The tutorial motto: There is no need to struggle through fancy drills. Develop accurate form with basic exercises and your workout routine won’t know what hit it. PHOTOS: RENEE PAUL
REST AND REPEAT
UPPER BODY: CHAIR DIPS
● All six moves, performed in this order = one circuit.
LEVEL 1: Chair dips focus on triceps, but still work other upper-body muscles. Dip off of a chair, a bench or even a couch—as long as it’s not a “soft couch,” Paul says.
● Complete up to three circuits in one workout, resting for two minutes between each.
FORM UP: “Make sure you are bending at your elbows. A lot of people are actually doing glute raises when they try to do this move because they lift through their backside. Bending your elbows, come parallel to the floor and then extend your arms up. Don’t lean too far forward or the shoulders will start doing a lot of the tricep work.”
● During a circuit, do up to 20 reps of each move or time each exercise for 30-second, 45-second or one-minute intervals. ● Rest no more than 10 seconds between moves. ● If you’re feeling sore, focus on stretching to increase flexibility: “Muscle soreness is going to be either from inactivity or from certain moves within a fitness routine that make you feel that way, and both instances revolve around flexibility.” ● One more thing: “Have fun with it! And it’s OK if you don’t finish the amount of reps you had in mind. Don’t get mad at yourself; just do what you can.”
CORE: PLANK LEVEL 1: Hold a plank for five to 10 seconds at a time. LEVEL 2: Work up to a 30- to 60-second hold. FORM UP: “If you need to, start by doing planks on your knees. Then straighten one leg and, if you’re ok with that, straighten the other leg. Make sure your back doesn’t dip, your arms are pulled in and all of your muscles are contracting.” 54

Spa Sanctuary We’ve never met a spa day we didn’t like. But when there’s no getting an appointment on the schedule, it’s worth it, too, to know HOW TO INDULGE AT HOME. Replicate those pampering experiences with this expert advice—even the kids are included. By Suzanne S. Brown
Face First
This facial (using skin-care products already at your disposal) will do what all facials do: relax, refresh, brighten and polish skin, says Loni Le Van-Etter, Glosshouz owner and founder. 1. Spend at least two minutes massaging your skin with a foaming cleanser, which will rid your face of makeup and any other residue. Don’t forget the nose and chin—two oftenmissed areas. 2. If you have a sonic brush (like Clarisonic), use it to do a second cleanse to clean pores even more. The soft bristles will also act as a mild exfoliant. 3. Soak a hand towel in hot water, wring it out and drape it over your face. Press down as you place the towel. This helps prepare your skin and pores for the next products, and just feels good.
4. Lightly massage an enzyme exfoliator or gentle scrub into skin to get rid of dead skin cells.
3. Discuss massage goals: Is it general relaxation or targeted muscle-pain relief, for example, your partner is hoping for?
5. Apply your favorite mask (which should address current skin-care concerns—be it dehydration, sun damage, redness or wrinkles). Let it sit for 15-20 minutes.
4. Apply massage oil first to your hands and then to your partner. Shafer says any oil featuring lavender will be soothing; sweet almond oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil are also generally recommended. Starting at the neck and shoulders, apply pressure through long, slow movements. (Be sure to do what your massage therapist does and ask if the pressure needs to change a few minutes in.) Massage for 10-15 minutes, moving to your partner’s arms and legs.
6. After removing the mask, use a serum such as Jan Marini Skin Research C-Esta Face Serum or Image Skincare Vital C serum to nourish skin. Then apply a moisturizing cream for deep hydration. 7. Finally, apply a quality product with SPF. Glosshouz, Centennial 303.459.4210, glosshouz.com
Skin Deep
At her Lone Tree aesthetics practice, Skin by Leah, Leah Shafer and staff use hightech devices such as lasers and a pen-like HydraFacial wand for treatments. But when it’s time for an at-home experience, Shafer goes back to the basics: a soothing massage that you can do with a partner, since “the sense of touch is relaxing and loving.” Her how-to: 1. Create a relaxing atmosphere with soft lighting, a fragrant candle and soothing music (and turn off phones!). 2. Pick your “massage table” and get comfortable: Have your partner sit cross-legged on the carpet or a rug, sit on a stool or lay on a firm bed. If they opt for the bed, don’t forget to put out towels or an extra sheet so oils don’t get on the important linens. Also place rolled towels or pillows under your partner’s neck and knees when they’re lying faceup, and under their ankles when lying facedown.

Guys’ Guide
A hand-mixed facial scrub adds a bespoke touch to Scissors and Scotch Denver’s “face refresher” service. The 15-minute routine is all about uncomplicated and quick maintenance, says general manager Melody Paigo. Step one: facial scrub. Step two: toner. Step three: moisturizer (which Paigo says should have an SPF of at least 15). Repeat two to three times a week.
Facial Scrub
INGREDIENTS 1 tablespoon uncooked oatmeal 1 tablespoon brown sugar (can also substitute or add finely ground almonds, walnuts or coffee) 1 tablespoon raw honey 1 tablespoon oil (preferably olive, jojoba or vitamin E) 2-3 drops of an essential oil, if you prefer
METHOD To make: Grind oatmeal and sugar in a coffee grinder or food processor until it’s a fine powder. Add honey, oil and essential oils. Stir well. If you are using additional dry ingredients, you may want to add more oil. Store in an airtight container. To use: Wet face with warm water. Apply a small amount of scrub and gently massage using small circular movements. For best results, leave on skin for two to three minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. Child’s Play
You’ll have less trouble getting the kids to hop in the tub when you introduce bubbles and/or bath bombs. You have two options here: stock up on a variety of ready-to-go goods or dedicate a few minutes to crafting your own. For ready-to-soak options, Park Meadows’ Lush recommends its Crayon bubble stick, which fills water with cloud-like suds while also filling the air with mood-enhancing scents of grapefruit, bergamot and buchu oils. (The kids can also draw pictures on the bottom of the bathtub.) For bedtime, see the company’s multicolored Sleepy bubble bar, made from a blend of lavender oil, ylang ylang oil and tonka absolute. And after a lot of running around, the green tea powder and peppermint oil in the Roar! bath bomb is said to relax overexerted muscles and soothe. Courtney La Marine of Denver’s Clove Studios, a favorite spa and skin care destination for south suburbanites, has your DIY option.
Kids’ Bubble Bath INGREDIENTS ¾ cup liquid Castile soap
¼ cup vegetable glycerin soap (liquid glycerin is easier, but you can melt solid glycerin by microwaving it in intervals of 10-15 seconds) 5-8 drops of a kid-friendly essential oil (look right for recommendations)
METHOD Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and store in a glass jar. Add 1 teaspoon at a time to running water until desired bubbles are achieved. Know that this will not create the same amount of bubbles that store-bought bubble bath will, which contains surfactants, La Marine says. UNDER MOUNTING PRESSURE, OUR COMMUNITY RISES UP. By Lori Midson IN THE FACE of uncertainty, isolation and extreme angst, people often seek solace in small comforts. We look for reassurance and guidance. “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news,” Fred Rogers told his television audience of friendly neighbors, “my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” Never has a mother’s declaration of hope carried so much weight. Within the COVID-19 pandemic, helpers are everywhere—resilient, compassionate and altruistic individuals and small and large companies doing their part to support our community, lift up those in need and relieve some of the hardship and apprehension. Celebrate six such advocates right now.
Shelter and Shake … Your Booty When gyms and fitness centers closed their doors, Laura Nigro of Balm Fitness and Carla Sanchez of Performance Ready Fitness Studio were among the first local fitness experts to take their classes online and outside. Nigro opened her studio in April of 2018 to provide “a place where women could work out, achieve their goals and truly push themselves in a safe, welcoming, encouraging and challenging space.” When the pandemic struck, Nigro was determined to continue empowering those women. She quickly moved her business model to a live-stream platform, with one to two muscle-burning, calorie-torching and bodystrengthening classes per day from her studio. The classes, playing in up to 25 participants’ homes, rely on body weight rather than equipment, so they’re conducive to a home environment. “It’s amazing that in isolating times, we’ve proved to be more connected than ever before,” says Nigro.

Sanchez quickly encouraged her clients to keep moving, too. “My passion for helping people to live stronger, healthier lives doesn’t solely depend on what I offer inside the four walls of my studio,” she says. “I knew I could offer something to my clients to help them keep moving and feel hopeful and socially connected in a safe, motivating way.” To that end, she began conducting workout sessions from her living room and inviting clients to join her via Zoom broadcasts, which she then posts on her Instagram and Facebook accounts along with healthy recipes and wellness tips. Her Booty School class, averaging around fifteen to 20 people, is a favorite. »

Keep Calm and Cook On Apocalyptic supermarket shopping chaos and the shuttering of restaurant dining rooms has created an unprecedented need for innovative ways to gather groceries and cook. These businesses rose to the occasion. The Country Club at Castle Pines, a private golf club with 600 members, implemented an online general store that allows members to preorder everything from toilet paper and tissues to breakfast burritos, eggs, family meal packages, soups, deli meats, side dishes, wine and beer— all distributed curbside. “I feel so lucky to still be employed, and in times like these, I want to give back to our wonderful members,” says executive chef Joe Martin, whose kitchen team has also dropped off breakfast burritos to first responders at various hospitals in Parker, Lone Tree and Littleton. “The least we can do is put meals in their mouths.” To-go grocery packs, priced at $62, became the calling card of Perry’s Steakhouse and Grille, a Park Meadows-based beef temple. Its impressive bundle of cook-at-home foodstuffs for lunch and/or dinner: a duo of filet mignons and chicken breasts, a dozen eggs, bacon strips, red potatoes, broccoli, corn on the cob, two loaves of house-baked bread, a gallon of milk and several additional culinary perks, including steak butter and seasonings. The restaurant’s Instagram feed has also showcased specials, including Perry’s famous medieval-size pork chop paired with whipped potatoes and housemade applesauce. And because everyone needs a little liquid courage during times of trouble, Perry’s created accompanying cocktail kits, loaded with liquor, mixers and garnishes. Meat and fish packages—think steaks, chicken wings, bratwursts, burger patties, pork chops and frozen salmon steaks—coupled with basic grocery necessities such as paper products, fruit and vegetable baskets, desserts and wine survival boxes became the only menu at The Streets at SouthGlenn’s Indulge Bistro and Wine Bar. The impermanent “neighborhood grocery” and wine/liquor store has temporarily catalogued its expansive list of available items online. »

Flower Power Estrey Schabacker, the Castle Pines resident behind Castle Pines Village’s luxury floral studio, Echelon Floral Designs Ltd., is a wife, mother of two college students and, by her own admission, “a caretaker of four furry friends.” A nurturer by nature, Schabacker (whose studio creates floral arrangements for weddings, special events and everyday occasions) started her company to “bring positivity and happiness to my friends, family and community.” When her small business temporarily shuttered in the dark light of COVID-19, she immediately channeled her inner white light to bring those company attributes to the elderly. “I’ve always been passionate about charitable work and community involvement. And during these uncertain times, I’ve used the resources available to focus on spreading positivity to the assisted living centers within my neighborhood by donating arrangements,” says Schabacker. “The importance of unity is crucial to get through this pandemic. Sharing bouquets with the elderly is my attempt to brighten and enhance as many people’s lives as possible.” It’s a good time to stop and smell the roses.

MAPS: ALLTRAILS.COM
FOUR FOOTPATHS that will change your walking routine for the better (in the midst of social distancing and thereafter). By Laura Thornton
IT IS HUMAN INSTINCT to repeat activities that create positive experiences; hence our knack for continually searching for the ideal daily schedule. But when it comes to routine walks on area trails—an activity that is currently an even bigger component of good health—there is only one inclination to follow: Don’t play favorites. With well over 200 miles of local paths to explore, no daily jaunt should look the same. Here to help narrow down the options are trail locator apps and websites, which feature real user comments on things like trail conditions and potential closures through photos and reviews. Let this assemblage from AllTrails, considered one of the most comprehensive collections of routes worldwide, put you, well, on track. Pups on leashes are also welcome.
SILO PARK LOOP
WHERE: Silo Park, Greenwood Village DISTANCE: Less than a mile THE GIST: Silo Park’s loop is a 0.7-mile lightly trafficked trail for all skill levels. It is a favorite of walkers and trail runners and, since the path is paved, is stroller- and wheelchair-friendly. ALLTRAILS USERS RECOMMEND: The optional nature walk—there are signs posted along the track with information on the park’s ecosystem and wildlife.
TOMMY DAVIS PARK LOOP
WHERE: Tommy Davis Park, Greenwood Village DISTANCE: 1 mile THE GIST: This walk circles a pond. The view and the loop’s supposed reputation for birdwatching make it a popular spot, but AllTrails reviewers have had luck enjoying a “quiet” experience—so experiment with off-hours. Should you want to keep your exploratory stroll going, follow the trail to the Silo Park loop and/ or Orchard Hills Park; Tommy Davis Park sits west of the former and south of the latter. Also stroller- and wheelchair-friendly. ALLTRAILS USERS RECOMMEND: Besides the pond, the exercise equipment placed throughout the park. Once social-distancing regulations have been lifted, you can make your own fitness routine on an air walker, elliptical cross-trainer, leg-press machine and more.
GREENWOOD GULCH TRAIL
WHERE: East Orchard Drive and South Holly Street DISTANCE: 2.9 miles THE GIST: This out-and-back walk-friendly segment of the High Line Canal Trail, for those who haven’t already experienced what one runner dubbed a “nature sanctuary,” has also become a hot spot for runners and roadand mountain-bikers. It connects to at least
64

seven other trails, meaning there’s plenty of opportunities to extend an outing. ALLTRAILS USERS RECOMMEND: The trail’s wildflowers, which should just be starting their season.
HIGH LINE CANAL TRAIL AND CENTENNIAL LINK TRAIL LOOP
WHERE: deKoevend Park, Centennial DISTANCE: 5.8 miles THE GIST: Follow the easy footpath to the left (looking toward Goodson Recreation Center) and you’ll be on the High Line Canal Trail until the loop’s last stretch. Go right and you’ll start on the Centennial Link Trail, parts of which used to be considered the Little Dry Creek Trail. The loop is known for spectacular sunset, mountain and suburban farmland views, and for a few educational elements: Read about Centennial’s Sumac Hill Farm’s conservation easement, for example. ALLTRAILS USERS RECOMMEND: Along with the picturesque views, art installations on trees. Keep an eye out for ceramic birds and playful faces.
